    Abstract: What makes some multiethnic states integrate and others descend into civil war? Ishiyama and Breuning extend traditional explanations centered on socioeconomic, cultural, and historical factors to argue that the actions of leaders of ethnic segments-too often ignored-are also critical determinants of policy outcomes. Applying a framework derived from comparative politics and IR theory, the authors explore two sets of empirical cases: the emergence of new nationalisms in old European democracies (the United Kingdom and Belgium) and the reemergence of old nationalisms in several new democracies (Bulgaria, Slovakia, Estonia, and Latvia). Their work sheds crucially important light on an issue that is one of the most prominent in world politics today

But few have explored the larger, interconnected forces that have set the stage for this crisis: namely, a rise in styles of thought, across a range of fields, that literary scholar Gary Saul Morson and economist Morton Schapiro call "fundamentalist." In Minds Wide Shut, Morson and Schapiro examine how rigid adherence to ideological thinking has altered politics, economics, religion, and literature in ways that are mutually reinforcing and antithetical to the open-mindedness and readiness to compromise that animate democracy. In response, they propose alternatives that would again make serious dialogue possible.Fundamentalist thinking, Morson and Schapiro argue, is not limited to any one camp. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in Lahore, Pakistan, Governing Thirdness provides important insights about the identity, marginalization and governance of the Khawaja Sira as they try to live an unliveable life. Taking a broad view of governance, this book includes a comprehensive analysis of governance of the Khawaja Sira across legal, social and administrative institutions. It also argues that labels like third gender and transgender fails to account for the gender fluid lives and multiple types of individuals who identify as Khawaja Sira, yet these categories, largely imported from the west, are used without much thought to govern this heterogeneous group

    Abstract: Arguing that demographic thought begins not with quantification but in attempts to control the qualities of people, Human Empire traces two transformations spanning the early modern period. First was the emergence of population as an object of governance through a series of engagements in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century England, Ireland, and colonial North America, influenced by humanist policy, reason of state, and natural philosophy, and culminating in the creation of political arithmetic. Second was the debate during the long eighteenth century over the locus and limits of demographic agency, as church, civil society, and private projects sought to mobilize and manipulate different marginalized and racialized groups - and as American colonists offered their own visions of imperial demography. This innovative, engaging study examines the emergence of population as an object of knowledge and governance and connects the history of demographic ideas with their early modern intellectual, political, and colonial contexts

    Abstract: "Heirs of Flesh and Paper" tells the story of early modern dynastic politics through subjects' practical responses to royal illness, failing princely reproduction, and heirs' premature deaths. It treats connected dynastic crises between 1699 and 1716 as illustrative for early modern European political regimes in which the rulers' corporeality defined politics. This political order grappled with the endemic uncertainties induced by dynastic bodies. By following the day-to-day practices of knowledge making in response to the unpredictability of royal health, the book shows how the ruling family's mortal coils regularly threatened to destabilize the institutionalized legal fiction of kingship. Dynastic politics was not only as a transitory stage of state formation, part of elite cooperation, or a cultural construct. It needs to be approached through everyday practices that put ailing dynastic bodies front and center. In a period of intensifying political planning, it constituted one of the most important sites for changing the political itself.

    Abstract: "Christianity, Politics and the Afterlives of War in Uganda sheds critical light on the complex and unstable relationship between Christianity and politics, and peace and war. Drawing on long-running ethnographic fieldwork in Uganda’s largest religious communities, it maps the tensions and ironies found in the Catholic and Anglican Churches in the wake of war between the Lord’s Resistance Army and the Government of Uganda. It shows how churches’ responses to the war were enabled by their embeddedness in local communities. Yet churches’ embeddedness in structures of historical violence made their attempts to nurture peace liable to compound conflict. At the heart of the book is the Acholi concept of anyobanyoba, ‘confusion’, which depicts an experienced sense of both ambivalence and uncertainty, a state of mixed-up affairs within community and an essential aspect of politics in a country characterized by the threat of state violence. Foregrounding vulnerability, the book advocates ‘confusion’ as an epistemological and ethical device, and employs it to meditate on how religious believers, as well as researchers, can cultivate hope amid memories of suffering and on-going violence."

    Abstract: How do memory and remembrance relate to the specific mode of transitional justice that lays emphasis on restoration? What is captured and what is obliterated in individual and collective efforts to come to terms with a violent past? Across this volume consisting of twelve in-depth contributions, the politics of memory in various countries are related to restorative justice under four headings: restoring trust, restoring truth, restoring land and restoring law. While the primary focus is a philosophical one, authors also engage in incisive analyses of historical, political and/or legal developments in their chosen countries. Examples of these include South Africa, Colombia, Rwanda, Israel and the land of Palestine, which they know all too well on a personal basis and from daily experience. On 10 December 2020, the book was officially launched with a webinar which brought together the editors of the book and prof. Stephan Parmentier (KU Leuven) and prof.     Abstract: Gardening together, becoming subsistent, shaping the city, living art and at the same time reflecting on the utopian sense or nonsense of this activity that was the motto of the neighbourhood garden "Keimzelle" (engl. nucleus) (2011-2019) in Hamburg. In this context, the contributors to the volume provide a strong theoretical basis as well as an artistically vivid examination of the transformative potential of DIY urban spaces. Accompanied by a skilled discourse community, the artistic approach makes a multidimensional penetration of transformative practice tangible. And in the interaction of critical scholarship and political initiative, the possibilities of alternative urban development become clear
    Abstract: Gemeinsam gärtnern, subsistent werden, Stadt gestalten, Kunst leben und zugleich über den utopischen Sinn oder Unsinn dieses Tuns nachdenken - das war die Devise des Nachbarschaftsgartens »Keimzelle« (2011-2019) in Hamburg. Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes liefern in diesem Kontext eine theoretisch fundierte wie künstlerisch anschauliche Auseinandersetzung mit dem transformativen Potenzial von urbanen Räumen des Selbermachens. Begleitet von einer sachkundigen Diskursgemeinschaft wird durch den künstlerischen Zugang eine multidimensionale Durchdringung transformativer Praxis greifbar. Und im Zusammenspiel von kritischer Wissenschaft und politischer Initiative werden die Möglichkeiten einer alternativen Stadtentwicklung deutlich

    Abstract: In the Event of Women outlines the stakes of what Tani Barlow calls "the event of women." Focusing on the era of the late nineteenth century through the mid-twentieth century's Cultural Revolution, Barlow shows that an event is a politically inspired action to install a newly discovered truth, in this case the mammal origins of human social evolution. Highbrow and lowbrow social theory circulating in Chinese urban print media placed humanity's origin story in relation to commercial capital's modern advertising industry and the conclusion that women's liberation involved selling, buying, and advertising industrial commodities. The political struggle over how the truth of women in China would be performed and understood, Barlow shows, means in part that an event of women was likely global because its truth is vested in biology and physiology. In so doing, she reveals the ways in which historical universals are effected in places where truth claims are not usually sought. This book reconsiders Alain Badiou's concept of the event; particularly the question of whose political moment marks newly discovered truths

    Abstract: A wide-ranging Black feminist interrogation, reaching from the #MeToo movement to the legacy of gender-based violence against Black women. From Michelle Obama to Condoleezza Rice, Black women are uniquely scrutinized in the public eye. In Re-Imagining Black Women, Nikol G. Alexander-Floyd explores how Black women-and Blackness more broadly-are understood in our political imagination and often become the subjects of public controversy. Drawing on politics, popular culture, psychoanalysis, and more, Alexander-Floyd examines our conflicting ideas, opinions, and narratives about Black women, showing how they are equally revered and reviled as an embodiment of good and evil, cast either as victims or villains, citizens or outsiders. Ultimately, Alexander-Floyd showcases the complex experiences of Black women as political subjects. At a time of extreme racial tension, Re-Imagining Black Women provides insight into the parts that Black women play, and are expected to play, in politics and popular culture

    Abstract: Religiöse Orte werden erst durch diskursive Strategien als solche konstruiert und wahrgenommen. Auf der Grundlage jüngerer Theorien zu mehrfach gemeinsam genutzten religiösen Orten zeigt sich, dass historisch kontingente Orte mehrdeutige Räume sein können: Am Kloster Sveti Naum überlappen sich interreligiöse Aushandlungen mit Tourismus, Wirtschaft und Politik. Anhand empirisch-qualitativer Daten ihrer einjährigen Feldforschung zeigt Evelyn Reuter Kontinuitäten und Brüche im Wandel dieses Klosters auf und kontextualisiert sie in der regionalen Religionsgeschichte bis zur Gegenwart postsozialistischer Transformationsprozesse

    Abstract: Seit fast zwei Jahrzehnten ist das Gebiet um den französischen Hafen von Calais ein Durchgangsort für Tausende von Migrant_innen und Flüchtlingen. Auf dem Höhepunkt der »Flüchtlingskrise« im Jahr 2015 erlangte es weltweite Aufmerksamkeit, als alle dort lebenden Menschen in ein einziges Lager verlegt wurden, das als »der Dschungel« bekannt wurde. Bis zu seiner Auflösung im Oktober 2016 stand dieser unsichere Ort, der seine Bewohner_innen so unsichtbar wie möglich machen sollte, im Mittelpunkt der internationalen Sorge um die Notlage von Flüchtlingen.Der Anthropologe Michel Agier und sein Team untersuchen die Architektur des Lagers, rekonstruieren den Alltag und die Routinen und analysieren die gesellschaftlichen Reaktionen auf den Dschungel, von der feindlichen Regierungspolitik bis hin zu konkreten Solidaritätsbewegungen. Somit entsteht ein umfassender Bericht über das Leben im »Dschungel von Calais« und dessen Zusammenhang mit der globalen Migrationskrise, der auch die Umwälzungen in unseren Gesellschaften aufzeigt - sowohl lokal als auch global

    Abstract: In the Middle Ages everyone, it seems, entered into some form of marriage. Nuns - and even some monks - married the bridegroom Christ. Bishops married their sees. The popes, as vicars of Christ, married the universal Church. And lay people, high and low, married each other. What united these marriages was their common reference to the union of Christ and Church. Christ's marriage to the Church was the paradigmatic symbol in which all the other forms of union participated, in superior or inferior ways. This book grapples with questions of the impact of marriage symbolism on both ideas and practice in the early Christian and medieval period. In what ways did marriage symbolism - with its embedded concepts of gender, reproduction, household, and hierarchy - shape people's thought about other things, such as celibacy, ecclesial and political relations, and devotional relations? How did symbolic cognition shape marriage itself? And how, if at all, were these two directions of thinking symbolically about marriage related?

    Abstract: This remarkable study develops a theoretical critique of contemporary discourses on secularism and assimilation, arguing that the perspective of assimilating distinct religious minorities by incorporating them into a secular and supposedly neutral public sphere may be self-subverting.     Abstract: American political observers express increasing concern about affective polarization, i.e., partisans' resentment toward political opponents. We advance debates about America's partisan divisions by comparing affective polarization in the US over the past 25 years with affective polarization in 19 other western publics. We conclude that American affective polarization is not extreme in comparative perspective, although Americans' dislike of partisan opponents has increased more rapidly since the mid-1990s than in most other Western publics. We then show that affective polarization is more intense when unemployment and inequality are high; when political elites clash over cultural issues such as immigration and national identity; and in countries with majoritarian electoral institutions. Our findings situate American partisan resentment and hostility in comparative perspective, and illuminate correlates of affective polarization that are difficult to detect when examining the American case in isolation

    Abstract: Ostdeutsche werden im öffentlichen Diskurs gerne als Opfer der deutschen Einheit stilisiert. Tatsächlich haben sie sich von der friedlichen Revolution bis heute als mächtige politische Akteur*innen erwiesen. Detlef Pollack analysiert aus wissenschaftlicher Perspektive und mithilfe seiner persönlichen Erfahrungen als Zeitzeuge und Teilnehmer, wie sich dies bereits im revolutionären Umbruch von 1989 erkennen lässt. Denn die entscheidenden Dynamiken gingen nicht, wie vielfach behauptet, von einer kleinen Schar Oppositioneller aus, sondern von der breiten Bevölkerung selbst. Diese Macht des Volkes zeigt sich bis heute, wo die ostdeutsche Bevölkerung durch ihr Wahlverhalten und nicht zuletzt auch durch ihren Opferdiskurs wiederum Berücksichtigung einklagt. Am ostdeutschen Protestverhalten lässt sich begreifen, wie sich eine Bevölkerung zum Volk konstituiert - unter den Bedingungen von Diktatur und Demokratie.

    Abstract: This remarkable and very timely ethnography explores how fishing communities living on the fringe of the South China Sea in central Vietnam interact with state and religious authorities as well as their farmer neighbours - even while handling new geopolitical challenges. The focus is mainly on marginal people and their navigation between competing forces over the decades of massive change since their incorporation into the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in 1975. The sea, however, plays a major role in this study as does the location: a once-peripheral area now at the centre of a global struggle for sovereignty, influence and control in the South China Sea

    Abstract: In Deutschland leben zahlreiche Musiker*innen aus der Türkei, die in ihrem Herkunftsland aus politischen Gründen nicht uneingeschränkt leben und musizieren könnten. Sie verließen die Türkei aufgrund des Militärputsches von 1980, der Diskriminierung ihrer kurdischen und/oder alevitischen Identität oder des gescheiterten Gezi-Protests und erneuter Einschränkungen von Minderheitsgruppierungen im Musikleben. Kirsten Seidlitz untersucht, wie sie von Deutschland aus mit ihrem musikalischen Schaffen politisch kommentieren, inwiefern die deutsche Gesellschaft mit Musik erreicht, aufgeklärt und beeinflusst werden kann, und ob die in Deutschland produzierte Musik zurück in die Türkei gelangt.
