    Abstract: Die »westliche Wertegemeinschaft und die ihr zugehörigen »westlichen Werte« sind spätestens seit den Terroranschlägen des 11. September 2001 die geflügelten Worte des politischen sowie gesellschaftlichen Establishments. Vom Oval Office bis in die Berliner Glaskuppel werden jene Werte bemüht, um militärische Demokratie-Exporte und politisch-mediale Tribunale zu rechtfertigen. Das Wörtchen »Wert« hat dabei nicht nur Konjunktur, es ist die inflationär genutzte Waffe der Etablierten zur Erhaltung der eigenen Macht. Mit dem Wert beginnt die Herrschaft der Moral. Während der Wert auf dem globalen Markt seinen angestammten Platz gefunden hat, leistet er außerhalb dieses Marktes gerade nicht, was er verspricht. Der habilitierte Historiker und langjährige FAZ-Redakteur Eberhard Straub liefert eine »scharfzüngige Polemik gegen die subtile Totalökonomisierung aller Lebensbereiche« (Ariadne von Schirach) und analysiert gleichzeitig die Rolle des Wertedenkens innerhalb des liberalen westlichen Systems. Straub entlarvt eine verlogene Terminologie – und stellt somit die Herrschaft der »westlichen Wertegemeinschaft« in Frage. Straub ist sich dabei mit Rolf Peter Sieferle einig, der die »wertebasierten« Herrscher wie folgt beschreibt: »Der Hauptgegner der konservativ-revolutionären Position sind die Mächte der bürgerlichen Welt, also Liberalismus, Individualismus und Kapitalismus.« Wer verstehen will, wie die Herrschaft der Werte funktioniert, und wie aus ihr mit großen Schritten eine Tyrannei der Moralisten wird, der greift zu diesem fulminanten Essay! But natural selection has given us a suite of beneficial social features, including our capacity for love, friendship, cooperation, and learning. Beneath all our inventions -- our tools, farms, machines, cities, nations -- we carry with us innate proclivities to make a good society. In Blueprint, Nicholas A. Three analytical approaches are introduced and compared, describing a wide range of texts from the perspectives of register, genre, and style. The primary focus of the book is on the analysis of registers. Part 1 introduces an analytical framework for studying registers, genre conventions, and styles. Part 2 provides detailed descriptions of particular text varieties in English, including spoken interpersonal varieties (conversation, university office hours, service encounters), written varieties (newspapers, academic prose, fiction), and emerging electronic varieties (e-mail, internet forums, text messages). Finally, Part 3 introduces advanced analytical approaches using corpora, and discusses theoretical concerns, such as the place of register studies in linguistics, and practical applications of register analysis.     Abstract: Die vorliegende Arbeit folgt Foucault in der Annahme, dass der zoologische Garten eine Heterotopie, ein Anderer Raum ist. Dies führte zur Forschungsfrage, wodurch er sich zu einem solchen Raum konstituiert, wie er sich als solcher produziert und reproduziert, durch wen oder was und wie er hergestellt wird und welche Funktionen er in der Gesellschaft erfüllt. Diese Arbeit untersucht den Anderen Raum primär im Zoo Zürich und im Tiergarten Schönbrunn. Hier gibt es Regenwaldhallen, die eigenständige Ökosysteme simulieren. Sie bündeln heterotopische Eigenschaften der Zoos wie unter einem Brennglas. Für die explorative Annäherung an die Heterotopie Zoo bot sich die ethnographische Methode an. Ihre vielfältigen Forschungserträge bilden den Kern dieser Arbeit; gerahmt werden sie von einer historischen Darstellung zoologischer Gärten und von raumsoziologischen Betrachtungen. Gesellschaftliche Entwicklungen schrieben sich in den letzten sechzig Jahren deutlich in die Heterotopie Zoo ein. Sie ist seither wirkmächtige Teilnehmerin an diesen Prozessen und bestimmt gesellschaftliche Werte mit. Mit ihren Aktivitäten wirkt sie in den Rest-Raum hinein, so dass eine wechselseitige Beeinflussung stattfindet

    Abstract: Ruptures brings together leading and emerging international anthropologists to explore the concept of ‘rupture’. Understood as radical and often forceful forms of discontinuity, rupture is the active ingredient of the current sense of a world in turmoil, lying at the heart of some of the most defining experiences of our time: the rise of populist politics, the corollary impulse towards protest and even revolutionary change, as well as moves towards violence and terror, and the responses these moves elicit. Rupture is addressed in selected ethnographic and historical contexts: images of the guillotine in the French revolution; reactions to Trump’s election in the USA; the motivations of young Danes who join ISIS in Syria; ‘butterfly effect’ activism among environmental anarchists in northern Europe; the experiences of political trauma and its ‘repair’ through privately sponsored museums of Mao’s revolution in China; people’s experience of the devastating 2001 earthquake in Gujarat; the ‘inner’ rupture of Protestant faith among Danish nationalist theologians; and the attempt to invent ex nihilo an alphabet for use in Christian prophetic movements in Congo and Angola.

    Abstract: The contributions to this book address the translation of culture in the context of religion, showing that this can be a bi-directional or even multiple process because the works we analyse give evidence of how their authors resort to different cultural traditions and languages and interrelate them through translation, all trying to achieve one principal objective: that of communication across boundaries. Thus, our studies analyse texts in literary, ethnohistorical and/or linguistic terms, highlighting the processes of translation across cultures. On the one hand, they include studies of the missionary context of the Early Middle Ages (Murdoch) and of colonially dominated cultures in Latin America (Sachse, Dedenbach-Salazar, Sarion), India (Eliasson), China (Jasper), Africa (Colenso) and Australia (Moore), from the 16th to the early 20th century. On the other hand, they analyse literary works with respect to how these transmit and translate culture: one a German play in the context of Islam (Irving), the other one a novel of the Haitian diaspora in the USA (Darroch). Another contribution presents the challenges of how the concept of religion itself is conveyed in contemporary scholarly contexts (Roberts). The works and con/texts we analyse here reflect understandings of Christianity which are not always orthodox and where authors of the pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial worlds try to convey and communicate cosmovisions and religious concepts to recipients beyond the original cultural spheres. By using different methodological tools, the contributors to this volume show the manifold and innovative ways in which this field of the translation of culture can be approached. (Umschlagtext)

    Abstract: While most research on inequality focuses on impoverished communities, it often ignores how powerful communities and elites monopolize resources at the top of the social hierarchy. In Privilege at Play, Hugo Ceron-Anaya offers an intersectional analysis of Mexican elites to examine the ways affluent groups perpetuate dynamics of domination and subordination. Using ethnographic research conducted inside three exclusive golf clubs and in-depth interviews with upper-middle and upper-class golfers, as well as working-class employees, Ceron-Anaya focuses on the class, racial, and gender dynamics that underpin privilege in contemporary Mexico. His detailed analysis of social life and the organization of physical space further considers how the legacy of imperialism continues to determine practices of exclusion and how social hierarchies are subtlety reproduced through distinctions such as fashion and humor, in addition to the traditional indicators of wealth and class. Adding another dimension to the complex nature of social exclusion, Privilege at Play shows how elite social relations and spaces allow for the resource hoarding and monopolization that helps create and maintain poverty.

    Abstract: About 150 years ago L. H. Morgan compared relationship terminologies, societal forms, and ideas of property to recognize the interdependence of the three domains.     Abstract: Many observers of Kenya's complicated history raise cause for concern, offering critiques of practices such as the use of public office for private gain and a constitutional structure that gives the executive branch lopsided influence. Yet efforts from critics and academics to diagnose the country's problems do not often consider what these fiscal and political issues mean to ordinary Kenyans. How do Kenyans express their own political understandings, make sense of governance, and articulate what they expect from their leaders?In For Money and Elders, Robert Blunt addresses these questions by turning to the political, economic, and religious signs in circulation in Kenya today. He examines how Kenyans attempt to make sense of political instability caused by the uncertainty of authority behind everything from currency to title deeds. When the symbolic order of a society is up for grabs, he shows, violence may seem like an expedient way to enforce the authority of signs. Drawing on fertile concepts of sovereignty, elderhood, counterfeiting, acephaly, and more, Blunt explores phenomena as diverse as the destabilization of ritual "oaths," public anxieties about Satanism with the advent of democratic reform, and contemporary mistrust of state currency. The result is a fascinating glimpse into Kenya's past and present and a penetrating reflection on meanings of violence in African politics.

Seine Blütezeit erlebte das chinesische Seladon vom 11. bis 14. Jahrhundert, als es Eingang in die kaiserlichen Sammlungen fand und weltweit exportiert wurde. Danach erfolgte der Niedergang des Handwerks, das bis Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts fast in Vergessenheit geriet. Erst in den 1950er-Jahren konnte es erfolgreich wiederbelebt werden. Mit dem marktwirtschaftlichen Wandel in den 1990er-Jahren mussten sich die Porzellanhandwerker neu orientieren, konnten sich jedoch bis heute, entsprechend dem Siegel UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe, als Lebende Staatsschätze und Meister mit ihren unübertroffenen Seladon-Glasuren erfolgreich positionieren.     Abstract: What is it like to be a young Muslim man in post-7/7 Britain, and what impact do wider political factors have on the multifaceted identities of young Muslim men? Drawn from the author`s ethnographic research of British-born Muslim men in the English town of Luton, Being Young, Male and Muslim in Luton explores the everyday lives of the young men and, in particular, how their identity as Muslims has shaped the way they interact with each other, the local community and the wider world.Through a study of religious values, the pressures of masculinity, the complexities of family and social life, and attitudes towards work and leisure, Ashraf Hoque argues that young Muslims in Luton are subverting what it means to be `British` through consciously prioritising and re-articulating self-confessed `Muslim identities` in novel and dynamic ways that suit their experiences as a post-colonial diaspora. Employing extensive participant observation and rich interview content, Hoque paints a detailed picture of young Muslims living in a town consistently associated in the popular media with terrorist activity and as a hotbed for radicalisation. He challenges widely held assumptions about cultural segregation, gender relations and personal liberty in Muslim communities, and gives voice to an emerging generation of Muslims who view Britain as their home and are very much invested in the long-term future of the country and their permanent place within it.This short and accessible book will be of interest to students seeking grounding in Islam and Muslim communities in diaspora, and scholars from an array of social science and humanities backgrounds including Anthropology, Sociology of Religion, Political Science, Urban Studies and Cultural Studies. Issus de la collaboration de trois anthropologues français, Marc Augé, Jean-Pierre Dozon et Jean-Paul Colleyn, et de la photographe et productrice Catherine de Clippel, ces cinq documentaires se sont penchés sur différents cultes de possession et rites thérapeutiques, croisant anthropologie visuelle et anthropologie de la maladie. Filmant tour à tour les cultes vodu du Togo, les rituels célébrant les caboclos, divinités afro-brésiliennes, et les cérémonies du tõhe des Indiens Pumé, la série "Vivre avec les dieux" met ainsi en regard plusieurs "terrains" anthropologiques, dont les similarités comme les différences se répondent et dessinent en pointillés l'évolution du fait religieux, du Togo au Vénézuela, en passant par la Côte d'Ivoire et le Brésil. Vivre avec les dieux constitue donc aussi l'occasion de revenir sur les mutations du religieux dans ces quatre pays, suite aux mouvements de colonisation et de décolonisation.     Abstract: During the first four decades of the twentieth century, the British Indian Army possessed an illusion of racial and religious inclusivity. The army recruited diverse soldiers, known as the "Martial Races," including British Christians, Hindustani Muslims, Punjabi Sikhs, Hindu Rajputs, Pathans from northwestern India, and "Gurkhas" from Nepal. As anti-colonial activism intensified, military officials incorporated some soldiers' religious traditions into the army to keep them disciplined and loyal. They facilitated acts such as the fast of Ramadan for Muslim soldiers and allowed religious swords among Sikhs to recruit men from communities where anti-colonial sentiment grew stronger. Consequently, Indian nationalists and anti-colonial activists charged the army with fomenting racial and religious divisions. In Faithful Fighters, Kate Imy explores how military culture created unintended dialogues between soldiers and civilians, including Hindu nationalists, Sikh revivalists, and pan-Islamic activists. By the 1920s and '30s, the army constructed military schools and academies to isolate soldiers from anti-colonial activism. While this carefully managed military segregation crumbled under the pressure of the Second World War, Imy argues that the army militarized racial and religious difference, creating lasting legacies for the violent partition and independence of India, and the endemic warfare and violence of the post-colonial world. --- provided by the publisher

    Abstract: Theravada Traditions offers a unique comparative approach to understanding Buddhism: it examines popular rituals of central importance in the predominantly Theravada Buddhist cultures of Laos, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar, and Cambodia. Instead of focusing on how religious ideas have impacted the ideals of government or ethical practice, author John Holt tries to ascertain how important changes, or shifts, in the trajectories of the political economies of societies have impacted the character of religious cultures. Each of the five chapters focuses on a particular rite and provides detailed historical, political, or social context: Holt shows how worship of the Phra Bang Buddha image in the annual pi mai or New Year's rites in Luang Phrabang, Laos, has changed dramatically since the 1975 communist revolution and the subsequent opening up of the country to tourism; he describes how, in the face of insurrections and a prolonged civil war, the annual asala perahara processions in Kandy, Sri Lanka, have come to reflect a robust assertion of a Sinhala Buddhist nationalist identity; how ordination rites among Thai Buddhists reflect the manner in which Thai culture has been ever more "commodified" in the context of its dramatically developing economy; and how in tightly controlled Myanmar the kathina rite, the act of giving new robes to members of the sangha after the completion of the rain-retreat season, transformed into a season of campaigning for gift-giving and merit-making; finally, he demonstrates how, in light of the devastating losses inflicted by the Khmer Rouge, pchum ben, the annual rite of caring ritually for one's deceased kin, became the most popular and perhaps most emotionally observed of all rites in the Khmer calendar year. In short, Theravada Traditions illustrates how popular, public ritual performance, far from being static, clearly indexes patterns of social and political change. Broad but deep, rigorous yet accessible, this rich, innovative volume provides a provocative introduction to the practice of Theravada Buddhism and the nature of social change in contemporary Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia.

    Abstract: This book provides an original concept of authenticity to illuminate the transformation of Christian consciousness in the increasingly more secular and pluralistic culture of Western societies. The present work is unique in offering an in-depth study of Simmel`s sociology and philosophy in dialogue with an ethnographic account of contemporary Christians. It develops original concepts drawing on Simmel`s writings on individuality and religion and connecting them with classical and contemporary scholarship in sociology and philosophy. The theoretical framework is illustrated through an analysis of the narratives and practices of Christians in an evangelical church in the UK and several New Monastic communities in the UK, US, and Canada. The book proposes an understanding of belief as relational and experiential and a concept of authenticity, as self-transcendence articulated in dialogue with religious tradition and the Other. Religious tradition is developed through an on-going process of interpretation and sacralization of what is considered within and without the tradition`s boundaries. The book also proposes an innovative approach to the study of morality by distinguishing between a people-centered ethic (ethic of compassion) and a norm-centered ethic (ethic of purity) to account for the the different ways in which Christians engage with the Other. This allows an exploration of the relationship between ethics and the making and breaking of boundaries in a given community. The case studies in this book show that committed Christians attempt to reconcile commitment to their tradition with the value of inclusiveness and to affirm their moral and religious identity as a distinctive moral lifestyle, not superior, but of equal worth to those of non-Christians.

    Abstract: It is a commonly held assumption among cultural, social, and political psychologists that imagining the future of societies we live in has the potential to change how we think and act in the world. However little research has been devoted to whether this effect exists in collective imaginations, of social groups, communities and nations, for instance. This book explores the part that imagination and creativity play in the construction of collective futures, and the diversity of outlets in which these are presented, from fiction and cultural symbols to science and technology. The authors discuss this effect in social phenomena such as in intergroup conflict and social change, and focus on several cases studies to illustrate how the imagination of collective futures can guide social and political action.
