    Abstract: This landmark book provides a comprehensive anthropological introduction to contemporary Central Asia. Established and emerging scholars of the region critically interrogate the idea of a 'Central Asian World' at the intersection of post-Soviet, Persianate, East and South Asian worlds. Encompassing chapters on life between Afghanistan and Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Xinjiang, this volume situates the social, political, economic, ecological and ritual diversity of Central Asia in historical context. The book ethnographically explores key areas such as the growth of Islamic finance, the remaking of urban and sacred spaces, as well as decolonizing and queering approaches to Central Asia. The volume's discussion of More-than-Human Worlds, Everyday Economies, Material Culture, Migration and Statehood engages core analytical concerns such as globalization, inequality and postcolonialism. Far more than a survey of a 'world region', the volume illuminates how people in Central Asia make a life at the intersection of diverse cross-cutting currents and flows of knowledge. In so doing, it stakes out the contribution of an anthropology of and from Central Asia to broader debates within contemporary anthropology.

A History of Fake Things on the Internet takes the long view of how advances in technology brought us to the point where faked texts, images, and video content are nearly indistinguishable from what is authentic or true. Computer scientist Walter J. Scheirer takes a deep dive into the origins of fake news, conspiracy theories, reports of the paranormal, and other deviations from reality that have become part of mainstream culture, from image manipulation in the nineteenth-century darkroom to the literary stylings of large language models like ChatGPT. Scheirer investigates the origins of Internet fakes, from early hoaxes that traversed the globe via Bulletin Board Systems (BBSs), USENET, and a new messaging technology called email, to today's hyperrealistic, AI-generated Deepfakes. An expert in machine learning and recognition, Scheirer breaks down the technical advances that made new developments in digital deception possible, and shares behind-the-screens details of early Internet-era pranks that have become touchstones of hacker lore. His story introduces us to the visionaries and mischief-makers who first deployed digital fakery and continue to influence how digital manipulation works--and doesn't--today: computer hackers, digital artists, media forensics specialists, and AI researchers.     Abstract: "Ethnic classification is the process of establishing standards for the characterization of ethnic group composition and identifying their ethnonyms. According to relevant conclusions of archaeology and historical, cultural and linguistic materials of various ethnic groups in ancient literature, the ethnic names and ethnic compositions are identified by certain ethnic groups in different parts of ancient China. The geographic regions where ethnic groups developed served as the spatial scope, and the timeline of Chinese historical periods and dynasties served as the temporal sequences for this study. The book examines the relationship between the culture of the Neolithic Age and the early people's community, and then analyzes the ethnic groups mentioned in historical literature and their cultural relationships. In addition, according to different historical periods, the names of ethnic groups appearing in each region are examined. The relationships between the names of these ethnic groups and related ethnic groups in the previous and the following historical periods are explored, and it is examined whether different national names in different periods were in the nationality shared intrinsic commonality. Therefore, these studies have used national ideology to guide ethnic identifications in ancient China. It shows how the Chinese people developed their civilization and eventually formed the great majority of today's ethnic communities on their own land"--

    Abstract: Theories and opinions about climate change abound - from those claiming that human-induced climate change is already beyond control to those who express scepticism about the real extent of these changes. How should we weigh up the scientific evidence, and what role does climate change play in the history of the Earth? In this comprehensive history of the climate and climate change, Antonello Provenzale explains how the planetary climate system works and how the climate has evolved over millions of years. Starting from the catastrophic events that marked the early history of the Earth, including seas of magma, global glaciations and mass extinctions, he shows that the climate has fluctuated between hot and cold periods: at certain times, the Earth was hot and lush with forests, while at others it was almost entirely covered by a thick layer of ice. The mechanisms that determine the modifications of the climate are multiple and complex and include external factors, such as solar luminosity and variations in the Earth's orbit, as well as internal processes connecting the atmosphere, the oceans, the crust, the mantle and the biosphere, which comprises living organisms. While the climate has fluctuated a great deal in the long history of the Earth, there are two features of our current situation that are a source of real concern. First, the rise in temperature of the last 50 years has been extremely fast, making it difficult for the environment to adapt to the new conditions. Second, the human population is much greater than it was in the past, and this population needs water, food, energy and shelter to survive. If temperatures continue to rise as they have in recent decades, ours will not be an easy world in which to live. To appreciate what is at stake we need to understand how the climate works and how human activity is affecting it - not in order to save the planet, which will do just fine on its own and probably better without us, but to save ourselves.

    Abstract: "On September 2, 1945, Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence via a makeshift wired loudspeaker system to thousands of listeners in Hanoi. Five days later, Ho's Viet Minh forces set up a clandestine radio station using equipment brought to Southeast Asia by colonial traders. The revolutionaries garnered support for their coalition on air by interspersing political narratives with red music (nhạc đỏ). Voice of Vietnam Radio (VOV) grew from these communist and colonial foundations to become contemporary Vietnam's largest producer of music. In the first comprehensive English-language study on the history of radio music in mainland Southeast Asia, Lonán Ó Briain examines the broadcast voices that reconfigured Vietnam's cultural, social, and political landscape over a century.     Abstract: "Feeding Fascism explores how women negotiated the politics of Italy’s Fascist regime in their daily lives and how they fed their families through agricultural and industrial labour. The book looks at women’s experiences of Fascism by examining the material world in which they lived in relation to their thoughts, feelings, and actions. Over the past decade, Diana Garvin has conducted extensive research in Italian museums, libraries, and archives. Feeding Fascism includes illustrations of rare cookbooks, kitchen utensils, cafeteria plans, and culinary propaganda to connect women’s political beliefs with the places that they lived and worked and the objects that they owned and borrowed. Garvin draws on first-hand accounts, such as diaries, work songs, and drawings, that demonstrate how women and the Fascist state vied for control over national diet across many manifestations-- cooking, feeding, and eating--to assert and negotiate their authority. Revealing the national stakes of daily choices, and the fine line between resistance and consent, Feeding Fascism attests to the power of food."--

Forged over decades of struggle, most recently in the fight against ISIS, Rojava embodies a radical commitment to ecology, democracy and gender equality. But while striking images of Kurdish women in desert fatigues proliferate, a true understanding of the women's movement remains elusive. Taking apart the superficial and Orientalist frameworks that dominate, Dilar Dirik offers instead an empirically rich account of the women's movement in Kurdistan. Drawing on original research and ethnographic fieldwork, she surveys the movement's historical origins, ideological evolution, and political practice over the past forty years.     Abstract: How colonial categories of race and religion together created identities and hierarchies that today are vehicles for multicultural nationalism and social critique in the Caribbean and its diasporas. When the British Empire abolished slavery, Caribbean sugar plantation owners faced a labor shortage. To solve the problem, they imported indentured "coolie" laborers, Hindus and a minority Muslim population from the Indian subcontinent. Indentureship continued from 1838 until its official end in 1917. The Deepest Dye begins on post-emancipation plantations in the West Indies-where Europeans, Indians, and Africans intermingled for work and worship-and ranges to present-day England, North America, and Trinidad, where colonial-era legacies endure in identities and hierarchies that still shape the post-independence Caribbean and its contemporary diasporas. Aisha Khan focuses on the contested religious practices of obeah and Hosay, which are racialized as "African" and "Indian" despite the diversity of their participants. Obeah, a catch-all Caribbean term for sub-Saharan healing and divination traditions, was associated in colonial society with magic, slave insurrection, and fraud. This led to anti-obeah laws, some of which still remain in place. Hosay developed in the West Indies from Indian commemorations of the Islamic mourning ritual of Muharram. Although it received certain legal protections, Hosay's mass gatherings, processions, and mock battles provoked fears of economic disruption and labor unrest that lead to criminalization by colonial powers. The proper observance of Hosay was debated among some historical Muslim communities and continues to be debated now. In a nuanced study of these two practices, Aisha Khan sheds light on power dynamics through religious and racial identities formed in the context of colonialism in the Atlantic world, and shows how today these identities reiterate inequalities as well as reinforce demands for justice and recognition

Like Trump, the Charlottesville marchers were dismissed as aberrations -- the momentary appearance of "racists" and "haters" who didn't represent the real U.S. Rather than being exceptional, It Can Happen Here argues these events are symptoms of the country's long history of systemic white supremacy, genocide, and atrocity crimes. And there is a high likelihood that such violence will occur here again. This reality, "It Can Happen Here" demonstrates, is a key post-mortem lesson we have learned from the 2016-2020 Trump presidency.     Abstract: Shared Margins tells of writers, writing, and literary milieus in Alexandria, Egypt's second city. It de-centres cosmopolitan avant-gardes and secular-revolutionary aesthetics that have been intensively documented and studied since 2011. Instead, it offers a fieldwork-based account of various milieus and styles, and their common grounds and lines of division. Structured in two parts, Shared Margins gives an account of literature as a social practice embedded in milieus that at once enable and limit literary imagination, and of a life-worldly experience of plurality in absence of pluralism that marks literary engagements with the intimate and social realities of Alexandria after 2011. Literary writing, this book argues, has marginality as an at once enabling and limiting condition. It provides shared spaces of imaginary excess that may go beyond the taken-for-granted of a societal milieu, and yet are never unlimited. Literary imagination is part and parcel of such social conflicts and transformations, its role being neither one of resistance against power nor of guidance towards norms, but rather one of open-ended complicity

    Abstract: "Islam and Heritage in Europe provides a critical investigation of the role of Islam in Europe's heritage. Focusing on Islam, heritage, and Europe; it seeks to productively trouble all of these terms and to throw new light on the relationships between them in various urban, national and transnational contexts. Bringing together international scholars from a range of disciplines, this volume examines heritage-making and Islam in the context of current happenings in Europe, as well as analysing past developments and future possibilities. Presenting work based on ethnographic, historical and archival research, chapters are concerned with questions of diversity, mobility, decolonisation, translocality, restitution, and belonging. By looking at diverse trajectories of people and things, this volume encompasses multiple perspectives on the relationship between Islam and heritage in Europe, including the ways in which it has played out and transformed against the backdrop of the 'refugee crisis' and other recent developments, such as debates on decolonising museums or the resurgence of nationalist sentiments. Islam and Heritage in Europe discusses specific articulations of belonging and non-belonging, and the ways in which they create new avenues for re-thinking Islam and heritage in Europe.     Abstract: "The dystopian transformation of contemporary societies that has expanded to various parts of the world and to diverse domains of human activities requires a rethinking of our conceptual repertoire rather than the reinvention of neologisms. The terms that we consider as belonging to a political lexicon need to be understood in relation to a constellation of concepts and a diversity of experiences across different societies in both comparative and relational terms. Chapters in Words and Worlds are organized around individual terms that form part of a political lexicon that many use to understand what is unfolding before their eyes. The juxtaposition of these different terms and the cross references that show unexpected connections across diverse domains of social life, whether concentrated in small spaces or dispersed across vastly distant ones, challenge the reader to see these dystopian developments through a different modality of reading and sensing. Words like knowledge, authority, democracy, corruption, inequality, and crisis have become part of our everyday vocabulary; yet, what animates these words, what give them life, what makes them dead, urges us to examine these common vocabularies from new and different angles rather than using them as crutches to avoid facing current disturbing realities"--

    Abstract: "In the past decade, the Kurdish question has re-established itself at the heart of the regional political debates at a time when the Middle East is once again engulfed in conflict and violence. On numerous occasions during the second half of the 20th century, Kurdish nationalism has managed to generate and maintain strong appeal amongst Kurdish populations in Iraq, Iran, Turkey and Syria, but these states have perceived Kurdish ambitions as a threat to their national security and regional stability. At the beginning of the 21st century, Kurdish political activism has reached a new height with Kurdish movements in Iraq, Turkey and Syria establishing themselves as important political actors in the domestic politics of these states. The consolidation of Kurdish autonomy in Iraq in 2005 and the establishment of a Kurdish de facto autonomous region within Syria in 2012 have turned the Kurds into actors capable of influencing regional political developments and resultantly enabled them to forge stronger relations with the international forces involved in the region. The rise of the pro- Kurdish movement in Turkish politics in the past two decades, especially its strong electoral performance in a number of elections since 2015, has placed the Kurds at the heart of the political developments in Turkey too"

    Abstract: Schon vor 50 Jahren kämpfte Afrika um seine Kunst, die während der Kolonialzeit massenweise in europäische Museen gelangt war. Und es fand durchaus Unterstützung im Westen. Am Ende jedoch war der Kampf nicht nur vergebens, er wurde auch erfolgreich vergessen gemacht. Auf der Grundlage von unzähligen unbekannten Quellen aus Europa und Afrika erzählt Bénédicte Savoy die gespenstische Geschichte einer verpassten Chance, einer Niederlage, die heute mit umso größerer Wucht auf uns zurückschlägt. Afrikas Bemühungen um seine in der Kolonialzeit nach Europa verbrachte Kunst sind keineswegs neu. Schon bald nach 1960, als 18 ehemalige Kolonien die Unabhängigkeit erlangten, wurde von afrikanischen Intellektuellen, Politikern und Museumsleuten eine ungeheure Dynamik in Gang gesetzt. In ganz Europa suchten daraufhin Politikerinnen und Politiker, Journalisten, Akademiker und einige Museumsleute einen Weg, afrikanische Kulturgüter im Sinne einer postkolonialen und postrassistischen Solidarität zurückzugeben. Die Argumente aber, mit denen andere versuchten, die Forderungen aus Afrika zu entkräften und Lösungen zu verhindern, ähneln auf frappierende Weise denen von heute. Schließlich verlief alles im Sand. „Gebt koloniale Raubkunst zurück! Dafür engagiert sich Bénédicte Savoy. In ihrem Buch zeigt die Kunsthistorikerin nun, dass ihr Kampf ein alter ist. Schon in den 1960er-Jahren drängten die neu gegründeten Staaten Afrikas auf eine Rückführung – erfolglos.     Abstract: "Communist agriculture – from the perspective of the pig. In Communist Pigs, Thomas Fleischman traces the rise and fall of the German Democratic Republic from the perspective of one animal, Sus scrofa, or the pig. His goal is to offer a deeper understanding of the development of industrial agriculture in the twentieth century by looking at how the transformation from farm to factory occurred on the Communist side of the Iron Curtain. The pig occupied a key position in the regime's attempts to create and sustain a modern, industrial food system. (In the mid-1980s, East Germans consumed nearly 200 pounds of pork per capita each year.) The pig is an incredibly adaptive animal, and Fleischman follows pigs through three different social roles. First and foremost, the industrial pig, as the conditions of factory farming demanded a new breed that also reduced the species genetic diversity. But also the wild boar, whose overpopulation was a direct outgrowth of agricultural development rather than a conservation success story and the garden pig, reflecting the regime's shifting attitude toward private, small-scale farming. These animal histories reframe narratives about state socialism, the Cold War, and industrial agriculture. By paying attention to the factory farm, the backyard garden, and the industrial forest, we can see how East Germany's economy and environment became enmeshed within global exchanges of meat, grain, oil, and capital. Fleischman argues that agriculture under communism came to be indistinguishable from capitalist agriculture, and that pigs provide a clear case study of this convergence. It also sheds light on the reasons behind the GDR's environmental and political collapse, and acts as a warning about the high cost of cheap food in our present and future."
