Jahrhundert bis in die Gegenwart: Bilder vom Frosch im Laborexperiment bis zu den Phantasiewelten der Nanotechnologie, denen im Spielfilm und anderen populären Medien die Bilder des 'mad scientist' wie Frankenstein und Dr. Caligari, aber auch des Fortschritts im Hochtechnologielabor gegenüberstehen. Dies erfordert ein radikales Umdenken hinsichtlich gesellschaftlicher Kategorien wie Identität, Sprache und Kultur. Anhand der Verwendung der Spiegelmetapher untersucht dieses Buch die literarische Realisierung eines anderen Identitätsbegriffs in Erzählungen von Autorinnen nicht deutscher Herkunft. Der intrakulturelle Zwischenraum, den besonders Emine Sevgi Özdamar in ihrer Verwendung des Spiegels entwirft, verweist auf die sprachpolitische Dimension ihres Schreibens. Die Forschungsperspektive zeigt eine nahe Zukunft, in der die sich bei Özdamar artikulierende Erfahrung einer irreduziblen Mehrsprachigkeit Alltag wird

Welchen Stellenwert haben aber solche Ereignisse für die Menschen im Alltag? Wie arrangieren sie sich mit der permanenten Skandalisierung? Welche Skandale lösen bei ihnen überhaupt noch Irritationen aus? Diese Fragen bilden die Grundlage für eine empirisch-soziologische Untersuchung des alltäglichen Umgangs mit Lebensmittelskandalen. Entgegen anderen Untersuchungen geht diese Studie nicht von einer allgemeinen Betroffenheit und Gefährdungswahrnehmung aus, sondern arbeitet anhand von qualitativen Interviews unterschiedliche subjektive Erfahrungen, Deutungen, Reaktionen und Rechtfertigungen heraus und rekonstruiert diese in einer Typologie der individuellen Bewältigungsmuster

    Kurzfassung: This book examines the problem of linearization from a new perspective: that of the linearization of affixes. The author's driving proposition is that affixation provides a means of satisfying the universal requirement to linearize linguistic outputs. This proposition is tested using original data from Nuu-chah-nulth ('Nootka'; Wakashan family), an endangered Amerindian language that is remarkable for its complex morphology.
    Kurzfassung: "The linearization of syntactic constructs stands at the forefront of current research on the syntax-phonology interface. This book examines the problem of linearization from a new perspective: that of the linearization of affixes. The driving proposal of this book is that affixation provides a means of satisfying the universal requirement that linguistic outputs be linearized. This hypothesis is tested against extensive original data from Nuu-chah-nulth (""Nootka"", Wakashan family), an endangered Amerindian language remarkable for its complex morphology. This volume introduces typologically rare affixation effects to current theoretical debates surrounding the division of labour between the modules of the grammar."

Die in die Studie einbezogenen Stimmen stammen aus der akademischen Kritik und Historiographie, der politischen Theorie, dem journalistischen und kreativen Schreiben sowie aus den audiovisuellen Künsten. Indem hier dezidiert der Frage nachgegangen wird, was tatsächlich geschieht, wenn Saids Kritik über die Grenzen kultureller und sozialer Differenz reist, gelingt es exemplarisch, die emanzipatorischen Potentiale, aber auch die Hindernisse des postkolonialen kritischen Engagements herauszuarbeiten

    Kurzfassung: This book explores Walter Benjamin, Siegfried Kracauer and Alexander Kluge's analyses of the role that a rejuvenation in the capacity for imagination can play in encouraging us to reconceive the possibilities of the past, the present, and the future outside of the parameters of the status quo. The concept of imagination to which the title of the book refers is not a strictly defined, stable concept, but rather a term which is employed to refer to a capacity that facilitates both an active, creative relationship to one's environment, and a process of mediation between the outside world and one's own experiences and memories. Through a detailed analysis of their engagements with subjects that span a broad range of historical and thematic contexts (including topics as diverse as literature, children's play, film, photography, history, and television) the book charts the extent to which the concept of imagination plays a central role in Benjamin, Kracauer, and Kluge's explorations of a mode of perception and experience which could serve as a catalyst for the creation and sustenance of a desire for a different kind of future

    Kurzfassung: Education seems to have lost its orientation in Western culture and is in disarray all over the globe in time of global transitions. Globalizing capitalism is the general headline for some of the most profound, deep and dramatic developments in our era that education must address. The response of educationalists is only in its beginning and there is an urgent need to address the dramatic changes inflicted on/promised to our era philosophically, sociologically, culturally, ecologically, physically, aesthetically and politically. In the proposed book we try to address the challenge of globalization to education in the broadest sense of the concept of education, by treating this challenge in various perspectives through different disciplines and topics within which the challenge of globalization is conceived as the most profound dynamic of this historical moment, a development that is realized in many diverse and different levels, fields and spaces of human and natural existence. The various texts in this collection, written by some of the famous and interesting scholars in the field of philosophy of education and the sociology of education, try to address the richness and diversity of the challenge of globalization. It tries to reconstruct historically, sociologically and philosophically the roots, the practices and the fruits of globalization as a threat and as a gateway for new possibilities for today's education.     Kurzfassung: "The European University is under stress. It has become commonplace to argue that radical reforms are needed. The claim is that while environments are changing rapidly, European universities do not learn, adapt and reform themselves fast enough. Reform plans comprise the purposes of universities, i.e. definitions of what the University is, can be and should be, criteria for quality and success, the kinds of research, education., services and innovation to be produced, and for whom. Reform plans also include the universities' organization and financial basis, their governance structures, who should influence the future dynamics of universities, and according to what principles. In contrast, it can be argued that the currently dominant reform rhetoric is only one among several competing visions and understandings of the University and its dynamics. What is at stake is ""what kind of University for what kind of society"" and which, and whose values, interests and beliefs should be given priority in University governance and reforms? This book explores the visions underlying the attempts to reform the European University as well as two European integration processes (""Bologna"" and ""Lisbon"") affecting University dynamics. Above all, the book presents a framework for analyzing ongoing ""modernization"" reforms and reform debates that take place at various governance levels, not least the European level, and a long-term research agenda."

    Kurzfassung: Diagrammatology investigates the role of diagrams for thought and knowledge. Based on the general doctrine of diagrams in Charles Peirce's mature work, Diagrammatology claims diagrams to constitute a centerpiece of epistemology. This book reflects Peirce's work on the issue in Husserl's contemporaneous doctrine of categorical intuition and charts the many unnoticed similarities between Peircean semiotics and early Husserlian phenomenology.

Diagrams, on a Peircean account, allow for observation and experimentation with ideal structures and objects and thus furnish the access to the synthetic a priori of the regional and formal ontology of the Husserlian tradition. The second part of the book focuses on three regional branches of semiotics: biosemiotics, picture analysis, and the theory of literature. Based on diagrammatology, these domains appear as accessible for a diagrammatological approach which leaves the traditional relativism and culturalism of semiotics behind and hence constitutes a realist semiotics."

It focuses on major issues that are confronting teacher educators now and in the next decade. These include the impact of globalization on the profession of teaching, and how teacher education must deal with changing accountability requirements from governments and establish a set of minimum standards acceptable to enable a person to teach. The work also considers aspects of the three major phases of teacher education: the period prior to commencing in the profession, successful induction into the profession, and the ongoing professional development of teachers.     Kurzfassung: This volume demonstrates that mixed utterances in young bilinguals can be analyzed in the same way as adult code-switching. It provides new insights not only in the field of code-switching and of language mixing in young bilinguals, but also in issues concerning general questions on linguistic theory which are difficult to be answered with monolingual data.
    Kurzfassung: The goal of this volume is to prove that mixed utterances in young bilinguals can be analyzed in the same way as adult code-switching. Analyzing a rich corpus of spontaneous child data, the author provides detailed empirical evidence for latest minimalist assumptions on the architecture of mind and confirms that code-switching is only constrained by the two grammars of the languages involved. The data show that the quantity of mixing in children depends on an individual choice rather than on language development, language dominance, or other factors. Besides critically reviewing the literature on language mixing in children and adults, this work offers a thorough grammatical analysis of the code-switching data of five Italian/German children. The book provides new insights not only in the field of code-switching and of language mixing in young bilinguals, but also in issues concerning general questions on linguistic theory which are difficult to be answered with monolingual data.

    Kurzfassung: The universality of the problematics with urban education, together with the importance of understanding the context of improvement interventions, brings into sharp focus the importance of an undertaking like the International Handbook of Urban Education. An important focus of this book is the interrogation of both the social and political factors that lead to different problem posing and subsequent solutions within each region.
    Kurzfassung: It is evident that urban education has become the central focus of educators at the present time. In the U.S., for example, almost one third of all school age children attend schools in large urban school districts. It is in these urban schools where the diversity of cultures and languages is highest and where student learning is most problematic. What has emerged from recent work to improve urban schools is the insight that there is no one-size-fits-all panacea. Rather, we have discovered that the local context shapes, in critically important ways, what will be effective at the school level. The universality of the problematics with urban education, together with the importance of understanding the local, or situated, context of improvement interventions, brings into sharp focus the importance and timeliness of an undertaking like the International Handbook of Urban Education. An important focus of the International Handbook of Urban Education will be the interrogation of both the social and political factors that lead to different problem posing and subsequent solutions within each region. An important question to be answered, for example, is what it takes in terms of resources, political will and policy actions to improve urban education.

    Kurzfassung: This work has a uniquely cognitive-functional perspective on bi-lingualism. This means that it makes a clear distinction between real world and projected world. Information conveyed by language must be about the projected world. Both the experimental results and the systematic claims in this volume call for a weak form of whorfianism. The authors examine too some relatively unexplored issues of bilingualism, such as, among others, gender systems in the bilingual mind, synergic concepts, and ontological categorization.

    Kurzfassung: Educational systems are now more than ever faced with the challenge of improving their performance and proving that suitable measures are being taken to guarantee greater efficiency regarding equity. Bringing together a wide range of disciplines and experience in several countries, this book details possible models of governance and describes ways to measure their effects in terms of efficiency and equity.
    Kurzfassung: Education has increasingly become the focus of public discourse and policy, with its methods, resources and achievements widely debated. As a result, educational systems are now more than ever faced with the challenge of improving their performance and of proving that suitable measures are being taken to guarantee greater efficiency regarding equity. This desire for better results requires that better methods for their measurement exist so that they can be better understood and, ultimately, improved. Several disciplines have already developed instruments for this purpose. The educational sciences have been particularly active in this field. Other disciplines, such as sociology, economics, management, information technology, and political science are also making significant contributions to the emergence of a better form of governance. Before one can benefit from these developments, one first must know about their existence and analyse and question them. The proposed book is unique in that it brings together a wide range of disciplines and experience from several countries. What are possible models of governance? How do we measure their effects in terms of efficiency and equity? What type of contribution can financial and information systems make?     Kurzfassung: Here is a review of worldwide economic, political, cultural and educational changes since the beginning of the 1980s, examining new trends in educational governance. It describes the processes of globalization and shows how national education systems have responded. The book explains how world education models have emerged in international agencies and traces the ways these models are borrowed, imitated, imposed and adapted as different countries reform primary and secondary education.
    Kurzfassung: The book makes an overview of the world wide economic, political, cultural and educational changes since the beginning of the 1980's and presents the new type of educational governance. It describes the processes of globalization and how national education systems have responded to these processes. It argues that symbolic world models (for the way of organizing national societies and education) have emerged in international agencies and how these models are borrowed, imitated, imposed and so on, when different countries reform their primary and secondary education. This book extensively reviews outcomes of educational decentralization using research findings from Australia, China, Kyrgyz Republic, Czech Republic, Sweden, England, Mozambique, South Africa, Senegal, Nicaragua, the USA. It also presents grassroots cases from different countries against the background of the overall changes in governance philosophy and applications. It reviews literature and reports on decentralization in the wider context of educational restructuring and gives a detailed account for different types of decentralization and their short and medium term impact. Also, it presents case studies from countries in Africa, Europe and Latin America and describes what is taking place at the local levels.     Kurzfassung: "This volume offers a critical examination of the growing pressure to apply scientific principles as a means to improve education. The authors trace the ideology of scientism to the early faith Auguste Comte placed in science and the scientific method as a panacea to all human problem solving. By revealing many of the epistemological problems confronted by the social sciences, including education, the authors undermine the prevailing view that a science of education is possible or desirable. Besides revealing the epistemological problems associated with education research, they suggest that the instrumentalism and micro level responsibility related to scientism in education constitute a manipulative ideological smokescreen to distract public attention away from the structural inequities that generate disparate academic outcomes among students in industrialized democracies. The book deals a severe blow to the belief that science is a suitable lens through which to view or strengthen educational practice. ""One begins this book with the skeptical belief that it can t be right. The task of reading, then, is to locate where Hyslop-Margison goes wrong to reach his radical and disturbing conclusions.     Kurzfassung: This book provides an in-depth description of the framework of inductive dependency parsing, a methodology for robust and efficient syntactic analysis of unrestricted natural language text. This methodology is based on two essential components: dependency-based syntactic representations and a data-driven approach to syntactic parsing. More precisely, it is based on a deterministic parsing algorithm in combination with inductive machine learning to predict the next parser action. The book includes a theoretical analysis of all central models and algorithms, as well as a thorough empirical evaluation of memory-based dependency parsing, using data from Swedish and English. Im Rückgriff auf Rhetorik und Poetologie stehen Fragen der Disziplinarität, Interdiskursivität und Zirkulation neu zur Verhandlung und die Bedingungen von Wissen werden einer erneuten Prüfung unterzogen. Zum einen verschiebt sich das Augenmerk nun auf die Dinge selbst, auf ihre epistemische Beschaffenheit und die Formen ihrer Erfassung, zum anderen bleiben auch ihre institutionellen Rahmenbedingungen nicht unhinterfragt.     Kurzfassung: Looking across national contexts and drawing on ethnographic studies of schools in the UK and Australia, the book explores the implications of the contemporary education policy context and processes and practices inside schools for students as learners and for educational inequalities. The book uses tools offered by post-structural theory to read ethnographic data and show how the discourses that circulate inside schools at once mobilise and elide gender, sexuality, social class, ability, disability, race, ethnicity, religious and cultural belongings at the same time as they open up and close down 'who' students can be as learners. In demonstrating these processes the book offers new insights into how these 'truths' about students and learners are created and how they come to be bound so tightly to the educational inclusions, privileges and successes that some students enjoy and the exclusions, disadvantages and 'failures' that other students face.

    Kurzfassung: Economic globalization has been accompanied by implementation of education reforms linked to accountability and public finance schemes that emphasize student choice in schools and student loans in higher education. This book provides a systematic evaluation of the effects of state education reforms and finance policies over the past decades. It includes a discussion of the need for a fundamental rethinking of educational policy in the United States.
    Kurzfassung: Economic globalization has been accompanied by implementation of education reforms linked to accountability and public finance schemes that emphasize student choice in schools and student loans in higher education. In the U.S. these reforms are rationalized based on intermediate variables, like the number of math credits completed in high school and net prices. However, the reforms rationalized based on this research are seldom evaluated in relation to outcomes (i.e., measures of student achievement and equal opportunity to attain an education). In Education and the Public Interest the editor re-examines the political rationales for these reforms. John Rawls's theory of justice is reconstructed to develop a framework for assessing the effects of public policy on these outcomes. This volume undertakes a comparative study of the states in the U.S. to examine how education reforms influence student achievement, high school graduation, and college access, and finance schemes influence college access. Policies implemented by states in the 1990s were associated with improved achievement, as measured by test scores for high school students. These policies also correlate with increased high school drop out rates and the widening gap in college enrolment rates across income groups. This volume considers how privatization and accountability policies can be reconstructed to reduce inequality while continuing to improve student achievement and college enrolment.
