    Abstract: This article explores how Muslim women’s activism unfolds in the context of anti-Muslim racism and Islamism in contemporary Germany. In particular, it identifies both gendered forms of anti-Muslim racism and Islamism encountered by Muslim women’s organizations and ways they respond to it. Drawing on theories of intersectionality and boundary making, this study identifies the most common strategies used to confront anti-Muslim racism and Islamism and their implications for intersectional boundary making. For this purpose, six expert interviews with representatives of major Muslim women’s organizations were conducted and supplemented by data from internet research and participatory observation. Based on a Grounded Theory-inspired approach, the findings show that the responses of Muslim women’s organizations to anti-Muslim racism and Islamism reconfigure group boundaries. They create more inclusive spaces in which boundary formations by religion, race, and ethnicity and gender are transcended.

    Abstract: The year 2015 was a turning point in the history of migration to Europe due to the so-called migration crisis that emerged under the influence of wars, war-like conflicts, and anti-democratic authoritarian regimes in Africa, Eastern Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East. These historical phenomena led to unprecedented threats to human rights, including academic freedom and freedom of expression, which resulted in the fleeing of scholars to countries in the Global North and the West, with their liberal regimes. The forced migration besetting intellectuals also included representatives of feminist and gender studies, who were targeted by authoritarian regimes due to the latter’s symptomatic anti-gender policies and discourses. In the general context of forced intellectual migration from the Global South and the East to the Global North and the West, this paper focuses on scholars in the field of feminist and queer studies fleeing from Turkey to Germany after 2015. Special emphasis is placed on their experiences of both risk and inclusion at German universities following the scholarships awarded by academic-humanitarianism actors. The aim of the paper is to shed light on gendered and epistemic inequalities that are experienced by scholars in the wake of the neoliberal higher education system.
    Abstract: Das Jahr 2015 markierte eine Zäsur in der Geschichte der Migration nach Europa aufgrund der sogenannten ‚Krise der Migration‘, welche sich, unter dem Einfluss von Kriegen, und kriegsähnlichen Konflikten antidemokratischer, autoritärer Regime in Ländern des mittleren Ostens sowie afrikanischen, lateinamerikanischen und osteuropäischen Ländern, entwickelte. Vor dem Hintergrund der damit verbundenen, beispiellosen Gefährdung der Menschenrechte, sind auch akademische Freiheiten sowie die Meinungsfreiheit bedroht. Wissenschaftler*innen, die in ihren Heimatländern von Verfolgung, Verhaftung oder zivilem Tod bedroht sind, sind in diesem Kontext gezwungen, in Länder des Globalen Nordens und Westens, in denen aktuell liberale und demokratische Regime dominieren, zu migrieren. Dieser Prozess intellektueller Zwangsmigration umfasst nicht zuletzt die Flucht wissenschaftlicher Vertreter*innen der feministischen Theorie und der Gender Studies. Aufgrund der für rechtsnationalistische, autoritäre Regime symptomatischen geschlechterfeindlichen Politiken und Diskurse zeigt sich, dass diese Akademiker*innen besonders ins Visier dieser Regime geraten. Im allgemeinen Kontext intellektueller Zwangsmigration aus dem Globalen Süden und Osten in den Globalen Norden und Westen, konzentriert sich dieser Beitrag daher auf die Flucht von Wissenschaftler*innen im Feld feministischer und queerer Theorie. Dabei werden insbesondere Migrationsprozesse aus der Türkei nach Deutschland nach 2015 in den Blick genommen. Besonderes Augenmerk liegt dabei auf ihren Erfahrungen mit Inklusion und dem Risiko der Exklusion an deutschen Universitäten im Zuge der Inanspruchnahme von Stipendien, die durch Akteur*innen des akademischen Humanitarismus zielgruppenspezifisch eingerichtet wurden. Ziel des Beitrags ist es, die geschlechtsspezifischen und epistemischen Ungleichheiten zu beleuchten, die Wissenschaftler*innen unter Bedingungen des neoliberalen Hochschulsystems erfahren.

    The ‘Arab Clans’ Discourse: Narrating Racialization, Kinship, and Crime in the German Media (2023)

    Abstract: In the last decade’s media discourse, particular Arab immigrant groups received the name ‘Arab clans’ and have been portrayed as criminal kinship networks irrespective of actual involvement in crime. We question how ‘Arab clans’ are categorized, criminalized, and racialized in the German media. To answer this question, we collected clan-related mainstream media articles published between 2010 and 2020. Our first-step quantitative topic modeling of ‘clan’ coverage (n = 23,893) shows that the discourse about ‘Arab clans’ is situated as the most racialized and criminalized vis-à-vis other ‘clan’ discourses and is channeled through three macro topics: law and order, family and kinship, and criminal groupness. Second, to explore the deeper meaning of the discourse about ‘Arab clans’ by juxtaposing corpus linguistics and novel narrative approaches to the discourse-historical approach, we qualitatively analyzed 97 text passages extracted with the keywords in context search (KWIC). Our analysis reveals three prevalent argumentative strategies (Arab clan immigration out of control, Arab clans as enclaves, policing Arab clans) embedded in a media narrative of ethnonational rebirth: a story of Germany’s present-day need (‘moral panic’) to police and repel the threats associated with ‘the Arab clan Other’ in order for a celebratory return to a nostalgically idealized pre-Arab-immigration social/moral order.

    Abstract: Während mit quantitativen Methoden zwar einsichtsreicher Forschungsarbeiten zur Ungleichheit durchgeführt werden, vermitteln diese Ansätze ein unvollständiges Bild der zunehmenden sozioökonomische Trennung innerhalb der Gesellschaften im globalen Norden sowie auch im globalen Süden. Diese Dissertation untersucht, welchen Beitrag die Theorie der sozialen Reproduktion zum Verständnis der gesellschaftlichen Spaltung im Zusammenhand mit wirtschaftlicher Veränderung leisten kann. Ausgehend von den theoretischen und experimentellen Arbeiten von Jodhka, Souza und Rehbein geht diese Arbeit der Hypothese einer zunehmenden Trennung zwischen den aufstrebenden und den defensiven Untergruppen der Kämpferklasse als Folge der neoliberalen Reformen des späten XX Jahrhunderts nach. Deutschland und Kolumbien dienen dabei als Studienfälle. Diese Dissertation präsentiert die Gemeinsamkeiten der Folgen entsprechender Reformen in beiden Ländern wie auch ihre Verbindung mit der weltweiten Verbreitung des Neoliberalismus auf. Diese Recherche zeigt, dass die Reformen in den Gesellschaften beider Länder zu Veränderungen geführt haben und dass sie für jede Untergruppe der Kämpferklasse eine entgegengesetzte Wirkung hatten. Sie förderten die Eigenschaften und Kapitalien, die eher mit den Mitgliedern der aufstrebenden Kämpfer in Verbindung gebracht werden, während sie sich gleichzeitig negativ auf die Eigenschaften und Kapitalien auswirkten, die mit den defensiven Kämpfern in Verbindung gebracht werden. Diese Recherche zeigt auch den Zusammenhang zwischen der Internationalisierung der Produktionskette, der Prekarisierung der Arbeit, der zunehmenden Kommodifizierung des sozialen Lebens und der wachsenden Spaltung der Gesellschaften. Letztlich beweist die Dissertation, dass die Theorie der sozialen Reproduktion ein gültiges Instrument ist, um die Auswirkungen von Wirtschaftsreformen zu verstehen und die beobachtete zunehmende Ungleichheit und Segregation innerhalb der Gesellschaften zu erklären.
    Abstract: Although very valuable research on inequality is done with quantitative methods, these approaches provide an incomplete picture of the growing socioeconomic separation inside societies in the global north as well as in the global south. This dissertation evaluates the contributions that the theory of social reproduction can give to understanding of the divide inside societies in relationship with economic transformations. Departing from the theoretical and experimental work of Jodhka, Souza and Rehbein, this research tests the hypothesis of a growing separation between the subgroups of the fighter class, aspiring and defensive, as a result of the neoliberal reforms of the late XX Century. Germany and Colombia being used as cases of study. This dissertation presents the similarities between the impact of reforms in both countries and their relation to the spread of neoliberalism across the globe. This research shows that there have been transformations as a result of the reforms inside each society and that they had an opposite effect for each subgroup of the fighter class. On one side favoring the traits and capitals that more closely associate with the members of the aspiring fighters while simultaneously negatively affecting the traits and capitals that are associated with the defensive fighters. This research also shows the interconnection of the internationalization of the production chain, precarization of work, the rising commodification of social life and the growing divide inside societies. Ultimately, the dissertation proves that social reproduction theory is a valid tool for understanding the impact of economic reforms and explaining the observed increasing inequality and segregation inside societies.

    Abstract: In this timely book Nino Vallen tells the story of New Spain's gradual integration into the Pacific Basin and challenges established views about identity formation among the elites of colonial Mexico. It examines how discussions about the establishment and desirability of transpacific connections interacted with more general debates over why some people deserved certain benefits over others. As part of these struggles, New Spain's changing place at the crossroads of transatlantic and transpacific routes became a subject of contention between actors moved by competing notions of a deserving self: the learned councillor, the veteran, the discoverer, the meritorious, the creole and the merchant.     Abstract: "The story of the mass exodus of Jews out of Eastern Europe at the turn of the 20th century and the titans of industry who made it possible"--
    Abstract: Over thirty years, from 1890 to 1921, 2.5 million Jews, fleeing discrimination and violence in their homelands of Eastern Europe, arrived in the United States. Many sailed on steamships from Hamburg. This mass exodus was facilitated by three businessmen whose involvement in the Jewish-American narrative has been largely forgotten: Jacob Schiff, the managing partner of the investment bank Kuhn, Loeb & Company, who used his immense wealth to help Jews to leave Europe; Albert Ballin, managing director of the Hamburg-American Line, who created a transportation network of trains and steamships to carry them across continents and an ocean; and J. P. Morgan, mastermind of the International Mercantile Marine (I.M.M.) trust, who tried to monopolize the lucrative steamship business. Though their goals were often contradictory, together they made possible a migration that spared millions from persecution. Descendants of these immigrants included Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Estée Lauder, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Fanny Brice, Lauren Bacall, the Marx Brothers, David Sarnoff, Al Jolson, Sam Goldwyn, Ben Shahn, Hank Greenberg, Moses Annenberg, and many more--including Ujifusa's great grandparents.     Abstract: "Starting in the nineteenth century in Germany, colourful military uniforms became a locus for various queer male fantasies, fostering an underground sexual economy of male prostitution as well as a political project to exploit the army's prestige for queer emancipation. In the first decade of the twentieth century, however, a series of scandals derailed this emancipatory project. Simultaneously, public debates began to invoke homosexuality, sadism, transvestism, and other sexological concepts to criticize military policies and practices. In pursuing the threads with which queer authors and activists stitched their fantasies about uniforms, Jeffrey Schneider offers fresh perspectives on key debates over military secrecy, disciplinary abuses in the army, and German militarism. Drawing on a vast trove of materials ranging from sexological case studies, trial transcripts, and parliamentary debates to queer activist tracts, autobiographies, and literary texts, Uniform Fantasies uncovers a particularly modern set of concerns about such topics as outing closeted homosexuals, the presence of gays in the military, and whether men in uniform are more masculine or more insecure about their sexual identity."

    Abstract: Die vorliegende Arbeit widmet sich den macht- und identitätspolitischen Dimensionen kolonialer Verwaltungspraktiken im ehemaligen Schutzgebiet Deutsch-Südwestafrika und seiner Diamantabbaugebiete. Kernelement der Untersuchung stellen verschiedenste Primärquellen aus dem Bundesarchiv Lichterfelde dar. Anhand konkreter Schrifterzeugnisse kann so die Offenlegung komplexer Verflechtungen zwischen bürokratischer Regulationsmacht, institutioneller Gewalt, wirtschaftlichen Ausbeutungsstrukturen und persönlichen Schicksalen anschaulich erfolgen. Im Vordergrund der Analyse stehen die Nachzeichnung grober Entwicklungslinien und Funktionsweisen deutsch-südwestafrikanischer Verwaltungsbehörden sowie konkrete Repressionspraktiken. Anhand einzelner Dokumente der Diamantverordnung wird in diesem Zusammenhang deutlich, wie als sogenannte Eingeborene klassifizierte Menschen der Zugriff auf Erlaubnisscheine zum Schürfen von Diamanten kategorisch verwehrt und ihr bloßer Aufenthalt in den Abbaugebieten durch das Verwehren von Passierscheinen kriminalisiert wurde. Die Konstruktion von bürokratischen Identitätskategorien führte folglich zur räumlichen und sozialen Parzellierung in der Kolonie und produzierte sowie naturalisierte aktiv rassistische Ausschlussmechanismen.
    Abstract: This paper deals with aspects of power and identity politics in colonial administrative practices in the former German South-West Africa protectorate and its diamond mining areas. The core element of the study is a variety of primary sources from the Lichterfelde national archives. As a result, the complex inter-relationships between bureaucratic regulatory power, institutional violence, structures of economic exploitation and personal stories can be laid out in clear terms based on concrete written documents. The analysis foregrounds a retracing of the approximate development and functioning of administrative authorities in German South-West Africa as well as concrete practices of repression. Against this backdrop, individual documents from the Diamantverordnung (Diamond Ordinance) show clearly how persons classified as so-called Eingeborene, or indigenous people, were categorically denied access to diamond mining permits, and how their mere presence in the mining areas was criminalized by a refusal to grant them travel permits. The construction of bureaucratic categories of identity consequently led to a spatial and social partitioning within the colony and produced both naturalized and actively racist mechanisms of exclusion.

    Abstract: Reckoning with colonial legacies in Western museum collections What are the possibilities and limits of engaging with colonialism in ethnological museums? This book addresses this question from within the Africa department of the Ethnological Museum in Berlin. It captures the Museum at a moment of substantial transformation, as it prepared the move of its exhibition to the Humboldt Forum, a newly built and contested cultural centre on Berlin’s Museum Island. The book discusses almost a decade of debate in which German colonialism was negotiated, and further recognised, through conflicts over colonial museum collections. Based on two years of ethnographic fieldwork examining the Museum’s various work practices, this book highlights the Museum’s embeddedness in colonial logics and shows how these unfold in the Museum’s everyday activity. It addresses the diverse areas of expertise in the Ethnological Museum – the preservation, storage, curation, and research of collections – and also draws on archival research and oral history interviews with current and former employees. Working through Colonial Collections unravels the ongoing and laborious processes of reckoning with colonialism in the Ethnological Museum’s present – processes from which other ethnological museums, as well as Western museums more generally, can learn. With a preface by Sharon Macdonald.

    Abstract: Arguing that demographic thought begins not with quantification but in attempts to control the qualities of people, Human Empire traces two transformations spanning the early modern period. First was the emergence of population as an object of governance through a series of engagements in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century England, Ireland, and colonial North America, influenced by humanist policy, reason of state, and natural philosophy, and culminating in the creation of political arithmetic. Second was the debate during the long eighteenth century over the locus and limits of demographic agency, as church, civil society, and private projects sought to mobilize and manipulate different marginalized and racialized groups - and as American colonists offered their own visions of imperial demography. This innovative, engaging study examines the emergence of population as an object of knowledge and governance and connects the history of demographic ideas with their early modern intellectual, political, and colonial contexts

    Abstract: We investigate intersecting wage gaps by gender and nativity by comparing the wages between immigrant women, immigrant men, native women, and native men based on Western German survey data. Adding to the analytical diversity of the field, we do a full comparison of group wages to emphasize the relationality of privilege and disadvantage, and we use a nonparametric matching decomposition that is well suited to address unique group-specific experiences. We find that wage (dis)advantages associated with the dimensions of gender and nativity are nonadditive and result in distinct decomposition patterns for each pairwise comparison. After accounting for substantial group differences in work attachment, individual resources, and occupational segregation, unexplained wage gaps are generally small for comparisons between immigrant women, immigrant men, and native women, but large when either group is compared to native men. This finding suggests that the often presumed “double disadvantage” of immigrant women is rather a “double advantage” of native men.

    Abstract: How colonial categories of race and religion together created identities and hierarchies that today are vehicles for multicultural nationalism and social critique in the Caribbean and its diasporas. When the British Empire abolished slavery, Caribbean sugar plantation owners faced a labor shortage. To solve the problem, they imported indentured "coolie" laborers, Hindus and a minority Muslim population from the Indian subcontinent. Indentureship continued from 1838 until its official end in 1917. The Deepest Dye begins on post-emancipation plantations in the West Indies-where Europeans, Indians, and Africans intermingled for work and worship-and ranges to present-day England, North America, and Trinidad, where colonial-era legacies endure in identities and hierarchies that still shape the post-independence Caribbean and its contemporary diasporas. Aisha Khan focuses on the contested religious practices of obeah and Hosay, which are racialized as "African" and "Indian" despite the diversity of their participants. Obeah, a catch-all Caribbean term for sub-Saharan healing and divination traditions, was associated in colonial society with magic, slave insurrection, and fraud. This led to anti-obeah laws, some of which still remain in place. Hosay developed in the West Indies from Indian commemorations of the Islamic mourning ritual of Muharram. Although it received certain legal protections, Hosay's mass gatherings, processions, and mock battles provoked fears of economic disruption and labor unrest that lead to criminalization by colonial powers. The proper observance of Hosay was debated among some historical Muslim communities and continues to be debated now. In a nuanced study of these two practices, Aisha Khan sheds light on power dynamics through religious and racial identities formed in the context of colonialism in the Atlantic world, and shows how today these identities reiterate inequalities as well as reinforce demands for justice and recognition

    Abstract: "Though First Nations communities in Canada have historically lacked access to clean water, affordable food, and equitable healthcare, they have never lacked access to well-funded scientists seeking to study them. Inventing the Thrifty Gene examines the relationship between science and settler colonialism through the lens of "Aboriginal diabetes" and the thrifty gene hypothesis, which posits that Indigenous peoples are genetically predisposed to type-II diabetes and obesity due to their alleged hunter-gatherer genes. Hay's study begins with Charles Darwin's travels and his observations on the Indigenous peoples he encountered to set the context for Canadian histories of medicine and colonialism, which are rooted in Victorian science and empire. It continues in the mid-twentieth century with a look at nutritional experimentation during the long career of Percy Moore, the medical director of Indian Affairs (1946-1965). Hay then turns to James Neel's invention of the thrifty gene hypothesis in 1962 and Robert Hegele's reinvention and application of the hypothesis to Sandy Lake First Nation in northern Ontario in the 1990s. Finally, Hay demonstrates the way in which settler colonial science was responded to and resisted by Indigenous leadership in Sandy Lake First Nation, who used monies from the thrifty gene study to fund wellness programs in their community. Inventing the Thrifty Gene exposes the exploitative nature of settler science with Indigenous subjects, the flawed scientific theories stemming from faulty assumptions of Indigenous decline and disappearance, as well as the severe inequities in Canadian healthcare that persist even today."--

Im vorliegenden Band wird erstmals der Versuch unternommen, die geschichtskulturellen Dimensionen der Debatte auszuleuchten und einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit nahezubringen. Rund dreißig deutsche und internationale Autor*innen melden sich zu Wort. Die Aufsätze verdeutlichen, wie wichtig es ist, ein Kernstück der gegenwärtigen gesellschaftlichen Auseinandersetzung um das Erbe des Kolonialismus von verschiedenen Blickwinkeln aus zu betrachten: Einfache Antworten gibt es nicht, und gerade in dieser Schwierigkeit liegt die besondere Aufgabe.

    Abstract: Die Frage der Restitution geraubter und enteigneter Kulturgüter ist nicht neu, es handelt sich vielmehr um eine Frage, die unweigerlich mit allen Kriegen in der Menschheitsgeschichte und den damit einhergehenden wechselnden Herrschafts- und Besitzverhältnissen verknüpft ist - und über die sich Intellektuelle und Autoren aller Zeiten und Kulturen den Kopf zerbrochen haben. Schon der antike Geschichtsschreiber Polybios tritt vehement gegen die Zurschaustellung erbeuteter griechischer Kunst in Rom auf, Cicero stellt die Frage, ob die Ankäufe eines sizilianischen Statthalters ohne Zwang vonstattengegangen seien. Auch Petrarca und Goethe haben zu dieser Frage Stellung bezogen, ebenso wie Victor Hugo und Emil Nolde. Bis hinein in die Gegenwart, über Aimé Césaire und François Mitterrand zu Aminata Traoré reichen die rund sechzig Quellen, die in diesem Band abgedruckt, kontextualisiert und analysiert werden. Sie machen deutlich: Europas Kunstsammlungen müssen sich der Frage der Provenienz stellen, wenn sie weiterhin als Stätten des Kulturtransfers und der Wissensvermittlung gelten wollen - und nicht als Orte der hegemonialen Machtdemonstration.

    Abstract: Germany is facing a contemporary mainstreaming of the far right, which has a long tradition of wanting “Turks out!” Turkish immigrants have been the main strangers in Germany following the guest-worker treaty signed in 1961, physically close as friends, yet culturally distant as foes. From September 2015 onwards, German–Turkish politics of belonging, the Turkish issue, underwent a contentious period resulting in secessions between German and Turkish authorities in September 2017. Against this background, this article asks: How did mainstream political actors in Germany emplot the Turkish issue while a far-right challenger party sought to establish a far-right narrative of ethno-national rebirth? The temporal unfolding of the Turkish issue is explored by drawing on media analysis (n = 1120), interpretive process-tracing and narrative genre analysis of claims raised by political actors in German and Turkish newspapers. In order to visualize how the Turkish issue evolved between 2000 and 2017 in media discourse, 546 articles in the mainstream quality newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung were collected. The Great Secession period between 2015 and 2017 was selected for an in-depth case study. To conduct interpretive process-tracing and narrative genre analysis of this case, another 574 articles in the German Süddeutsche Zeitung and Turkish Hürriyet were analysed. In so doing, this article contributes to (1) the study of belonging and identity by adopting a novel approach to boundary studies, combining narrative genre analysis with Habermas’ communicative action theory, and (2) the study of political strategies of adapting, ignoring or demarcating far-right contenders by, again, introducing a narrative approach to political communication and mobilization processes. The analysis shows that, in the first stage of the Great Secession period, inclusionary and exclusionary boundaries competed, while in later stages inclusionary boundaries were cast aside by exclusionary boundaries after reputable mainstream party-political actors adopted and thus legitimized far-right story elements.

    Abstract: Bordering situates immigrant sex workers at the margins of an already marginalised industry and naturalises the legal conditions of their dispossession and precarity. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in Berlin, we offer a situated intersectional analysis of the everyday bordering experiences of Muslim trans*immigrant sex workers from Bulgaria (hereafter TISWs). Focusing on three interactional contexts – minority belonging within EU and German politics, encounters with medicolegal institutions, and the new sex work regulation in Germany – our study demonstrates both that everyday bordering experiences derive not solely from national border enforcement and citizenship regulation but also from intersectional sociocultural barriers imposed by non-state actors, while the internal bordering practices of the German state exacerbate the exclusion and marginalisation of sex/gender transgressive people and sex work. We conclude that despite their physical existence as EU citizens in Berlin, TISWs’ everyday bordering experiences require a more nuanced understanding of intersectional systems of oppression which postpones TISWs’ arrival in Berlin indefinitely.

    Abstract: "In Colonial Kinship: Guaraní, Spaniards, and Africans in Paraguay, historian Shawn Michael Austin traces the history of conquest and colonization in Paraguay during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Emphasizing the social and cultural agency of Guaraní-the indigenous people of Paraguay-not only in Jesuit missions but also in colonial settlements and Indian pueblos scattered in and around the Spanish city of Asunción, Austin argues that interethnic relations and cultural change in Paraguay can only be properly understood through the Guaraní logic of kinship. In the colonial backwater of Paraguay, conquistadors were forced to marry into Guaraní families in order to acquire indigenous tributaries, thereby becoming "brothers-in-law" (tovajaÌ) to Guaraní chieftains. This pattern of interethnic exchange infused colonial relations and institutions with Guaraní social meanings and expectations of reciprocity that forever changed Spaniards, African slaves, and their descendants.     Abstract: "The modern discipline of musicology has its roots in early-twentieth-century Germany and in three seemingly distinct but surprisingly connected areas of musical activity: the discovery of Medieval music and music theory through the all-consuming unearthing and decoding of documents; the tremendous growth of youth movements devoted to collective singing and music-making and the study of Medieval music; and the exportation of this music to Protestant and Catholic missions in German East Africa, where it was widely taught and performed. Underlying these activities was the belief that Medieval music, its structure and soundworld, had affinities with the music of "primitive" societies, such as those the missionaries encountered in East Africa. Rejected outright by African musicians and scholars at the time, the belief was kept alive in the European musicological community through the first half of the twentieth century. Anna Maria Busse Berger draws this all together for the first time, anchoring her writing in extensive archival research and her personal experience as the daughter of a German Lutheran missionary in East Africa. The result is a momentous re-thinking of the early history of music scholarship as well as a novel understanding of the imperial and colonial projects that shaped Germany's perception of itself at a crucial time in its history"--

    Abstract: In this article, we analyze headscarf debates that unfolded in the first decade of the twenty-first century in France, the Netherlands, and Germany. Through a socio-historical overview looking at newspaper articles and policy and legal documents, we show how the headscarf has become a site for negotiating immigrant-related, postcolonial difference. We argue that certain feminist understanding of gender liberation and postcolonial difference in the headscarf debates reveal the continuity of control mechanisms from the colonial to the postcolonial era. We highlight the possibilities for decolonial thought and practice by centering the situatedness of headscarf. This allows us to show how Muslim citizens are active participants in producing contemporary Western European histories even as some of their practices face overt rejection.

    Abstract: "Commercial Transitions and Abolition in West Africa 1630-1860 by Angus Dalrymple-Smith offers a fresh perspective on why the most important West African states and merchants who traded with Atlantic markets became exporters of commodities instead of slaves in the nineteenth century. This study takes a long-term comparative approach and makes of use of new quantitative data. It argues that the timing and nature of the change from slave exports to so-called 'legitimate commerce' in the Gold Coast, the Bight of Biafra and the Bight of Benin, can be predicted by patterns of trade established in previous centuries by a range of African and European actors responding to the changing political and economic environments of the Atlantic world."

    Abstract: "The modern discipline of musicology has its roots in early-twentieth-century Germany and in three seemingly distinct but surprisingly connected areas of musical activity: the discovery of Medieval music and music theory through the all-consuming unearthing and decoding of documents; the tremendous growth of youth movements devoted to collective singing and music-making and the study of Medieval music; and the exportation of this music to Protestant and Catholic missions in German East Africa, where it was widely taught and performed. Underlying these activities was the belief that Medieval music, its structure and soundworld, had affinities with the music of "primitive" societies, such as those the missionaries encountered in East Africa. Rejected outright by African musicians and scholars at the time, the belief was kept alive in the European musicological community through the first half of the twentieth century. Anna Maria Busse Berger draws this all together for the first time, anchoring her writing in extensive archival research and her personal experience as the daughter of a German Lutheran missionary in East Africa. The result is a momentous re-thinking of the early history of music scholarship as well as a novel understanding of the imperial and colonial projects that shaped Germany's perception of itself at a crucial time in its history"--

    Abstract: This article explores the role of gender in volunteering with refugees in Germany and how female volunteers, who outnumber male volunteers considerably, understand their involvement differently from men. Drawing upon quantitative data from two studies with volunteers in refugee work in Germany from 2015 and 2016, I discuss the motivations of female volunteers to engage in refugee support work, the meaning they give to their experience of working with refugees and the values they wish to demonstrate through their voluntary work. The article centrally maintains that refugee support work can be classed as a form of care work and is informed by an ethics and values of care. However, other results unveil that women interpret their care work as an expression of their political attitudes, specifically about anti-racism and anti-right-wing activism, as well, and thereby have recourse to a supposedly male political justification for engaging in volunteering. Thus, this article argues that these two forms of motivation for volunteering, care and politics, do not need to be mutually exclusive. Crucially, voluntary refugee support work represents a unique opportunity for women’s political activism for anti-racism and cultural openness.

    Abstract: European societies have been significantly challenged recently by intensifying debates around migration and integration. In Germany, the controversy around refugees has put the question of how to negotiate cultural differences back on the agenda. This article argues that female refugee support work volunteers in Germany have developed a compelling approach to handling cultural diversity in emotional, social and cultural practices. Building on interviews with female volunteers, this article demonstrates that research subjects’ interaction with refugees is guided by an ‘ethics of care’. Care ethics is characterised by the recognition of interdependence and relationships, attention to the context and to the particular, blurring of the public and the private and orientation towards the needs of others. The research subjects show that care values, such as responsibility and attentiveness, can serve as an alternative framework to integration and to the negotiation of diversity in everyday encounters. Data from quantitative studies on refugee support work in Germany then reveals that female volunteers politicise their care work to respond to racism and right-wing xenophobia. Ultimately, a political ethics of care has the potential to structurally, politically and emotionally change established understandings of integration and the relations between host societies and immigrants.

    Abstract: Diese Arbeit untersucht das Beziehungsgeflecht zwischen musikalischen kreativen Prozessen, Identitätspolitik und Globalisierung im heutigen Deutschland anhand eines bestimmten Falls: dem Musikwettbewerb "Creole", der seit 2006 in unterschiedlichen Orten von Deutschland stattfindet. Laut Programmtext soll diese Veranstaltung die Kreolisierung der Musikwelt und die Vernetzungen zwischen unterschiedlichen Kulturen und Musikgattungen widerspiegeln. Bei einer genauen Untersuchung des Entstehungs- und Durchführungsprozess erweisen sich aber der Erwartungshorizont und die Erfahrungen der Teilnehmer als komplex und vielschichtig. Statt eine klar gewichtete Realität wiederzugeben, produzieren diese Festivals eine « Weltmusik aus Deutschland » (aus Berlin, aus Nordrhein-Westphalen, Bayern usw.), deren Formen die bestehenden musikalischen Kategorien und Erfahrungsmuster auf der Probe stellen. Die ethnologische Untersuchung dieses Falls ist hier ein Mittel, um im Sinne der histoire croisée (Werner/Zimmermann 2003) einen Einblick in unterschiedliche Aspekte der deutschen Gesellschaft zu gewinnen : als "Einwanderungsland", das zwischen dem Ideal einer pluralistischen Gesellschaft und der Akzentuierung von ethnischen Grenzen hin-und hergerissen wird; als "Musikland", das für sein reiches, klassisches Erbe bekannt ist aber sich auch zu anderen Formen von populärer oder "globaler" Musik öffnet ; als Bundesrepublik, die heute sowohl mit den differenzierten Realitäten in den Ländern als auch mit internationalen Steuerungsinstanzen der Kulturpolitik umgehen muss. So breit der Hintergrund ist, so genau ist hier der Blick auf die konkreten Interaktionsprozesse, um im Sinne einer « dichten Beschreibung » den Enstehungs- und Durchführungsprozess der Festivals in ihren jeweiligen Kontexten zu analysieren, die aufeinander folgenden Auswahletappen von der Ausschreibung bis hin zu den ritualisierten Preisverleihungen zu verfolgen und die Debatten zum „Wert“ der Musik sowie zum Sinn und Zweck der Veranstaltung analysieren zu können.
    Abstract: This work aims to show the relations between musical creation, identity politics and globalization in Germany today taken from one case: the creole competitions, a cycle of festivals leading every two years to a prize for “world music from Germany” (since 2010 “Global Music”). According to its accompanying text, this festival is intended to illustrate the “creolization” of music in Germany. When one investigates the genesis of the project and the mobilization of candidates, partners and experts, it turns out that the expectations are more complex and that these events, rather than illustrating an established reality, create plural versions of a “world music from Germany”. The crux of this work is to explain the tensions between the values which have currency within the intimacy of this professional sector (“die Nische Weltmusik”) and the public perception of the genre, tarnished with suspicion and controversy. This world of music cuts across questions that mark more generally German society today : as an “country of immigrants” (Einwanderungsland) torn between the idealization of cross-fertilization and the fear of diversity, as a “music country” (Musikland) known for the richness of its intellectual heritage, but desirous to promote examples of contemporary music and as a political system divided between local structures and globalized frameworks which define public culture. Just as the background of this work is large, so too the attention given to specific situations has to be precise : to show the organizing frameworks of the contests, the various criteria taken into account by the juries in their deliberations and the debates which emerge among the spectators on the “spirit” of this manifestation.
    Abstract: Ce travail vise à rendre compte des relations entre création musicale, politiques de la diversité et mondialisation dans l’Allemagne d’aujourd’hui en partant d’un cas : creole, un cycle de compétitions organisé selon un principe fédéral, qui donne lieu à des festivals dans différentes villes et débouche tous les deux ans sur un prix récompensant trois ensembles de « musiques du monde d’Allemagne ». Selon les textes des programmes, cette manifestation est censée illustrer la créolisation du monde et les connexions émergeant entre différentes cultures et genres musicaux présents en Allemagne. Lorsque l’on se penche sur le processus d’émergence de ce projet et les dynamiques de mobilisation des participants, il s’avère cependant que le spectre des attentes est plus complexe et que ces événements, plutôt qu’illustrer une réalité univoque, fabriquent en des versions plurielles tout un monde de musiques d’Allemagne. L’étude de ce cas n’est pas une fin en soi mais un moyen pour appréhender divers aspects de l’Allemagne contemporaine. Les débats qui ont cours dans l’intimité du secteur des « musiques du monde » manifestent plus largement des tensions traversant la société allemande d’aujourd’hui : en tant que terre d’immigration partagée entre l’idéalisation du métissage et la mise en avant de cultures distinctes, en tant que « pays de musique » connu pour la richesse de son patrimoine savant et en même temps désireux de promouvoir des artistes « populaires » ou « modernes », en tant que système politique fédéral devant composer avec les diverses instances locales et les cadres mondialisés du marché et de la politique culturelle. Autant l’arrière-plan considéré dans ce travail est large, autant l’attention portée aux situations d’interaction se veut précise : pour rendre compte du processus de fabrique des festivals et des environnements différenciés dans lesquels ils s’inscrivent, des logiques de sélection et des dynamiques de délibérations des jurys, des cadres organisant chaque épreuve ainsi que des débats qui surgissent parmi les spectateurs sur « l’esprit » des festivals creole.

    Abstract: Precarity and precarious work are widely debated concepts, though a lack of clarity remains about its definition, dimensions and application. Recognition appears to be an illuminating concept for a deeper understanding of work and employment in times of precarity and its further effects, but has yet to be considered. The article aims to develop a multifaceted understanding of precarity for empirical research. Hence, precarity of life arrangement is introduced as a heuristic, though it is developed further on the grounds of theories of recognition. The conceptual enlargement of precarity of life arrangement, further developed by theories of recognition, is the outcome of the article. To demonstrate the concept`s potential, of the spectrum of the empirical material of the study, the case of a couple in precarious working and living conditions is presented. Income and employment are important dimensions within the concept but are embedded in the life arrangement and hence intertwined with rights, love, participation, care, health and housing. The enlarged perspective developed in the articles stresses not only how precarity cumulates in life arrangement, but also gives insights into how precarity is mitigated and strengthened within the reciprocal relations of life dimensions and due to recognition (deficits).

    Abstract: Income inequality has grown in many countries over the past decades. Single country studies have investigated how trends in family demography, such as rising female employment, assortative mating and single parenthood, have affected this development. But the combined effects have not been studied sufficiently, much less in a comparative perspective. We apply decomposition and counterfactual analyses to Luxembourg Income Study data from the 1990s and 2000s for West Germany and the USA. We counterfactually analyse how changes in the distribution of men’s and women’s education, employment and children across households between the 1990s and 2000s affected overall inequality (Theil index). We find that changes in family demography between the 1990s and the 2000s explain inequality growth in West Germany but not in the USA, where the effects of gendered changes in education and employment offset each other. In West Germany, changes in the distribution of household types, and particularly changes in men’s employment and education, contributed to increases in income inequality. The country differences in the relationship between changes in family demography and inequality growth reflect how the decline in men’s and the growth in women’s employment played out differently in the weakening male breadwinner context in West Germany and in the universal breadwinner context in the USA.

    Abstract: Das Auffälligste am Streit um das Humboldt Forum ist der Streit selbst. Er will nicht enden. Es ist wohl Ironie der Geschichte, dass ausgerechnet jene völkerkundlichen Sammlungen, die am weitesten von der ungeliebten preußisch-deutschen Vergangenheit wegführen sollten, den Konflikt am Ende doch wieder nach Hause brachten. Denn jetzt wird über die koloniale Verantwortung gestritten und die Frage der Restitution der Objekte. In all diesen Debatten haben sich die Historiker zu Wort gemeldet, die Kunstwissenschaftler, die Museumsfachleute, die Politiker und nicht zuletzt die Kritiker der nachkolonialen Verhältnisse schlechthin. Nur von denen, die sich von Berufs wegen am besten mit den in Rede stehenden Sammlungen auskennen, von den Ethnologen, war erstaunlich wenig zu hören.

    Abstract: 2010 wurden die Staatlichen Ethnografischen Sammlungen Sachsen mit ihren drei Museen in Dresden, Herrnhut und Leipzig den Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen Dresden angegliedert. Seither lassen sich in diesem zweitgrößten Museumsverbund Deutschlands exemplarisch die diversen Fallkonstellationen und Provenienzfragen in unterschiedlichen Museumstypen beobachten. Die Kunstmuseen wurden mit neuen Fragestellungen wie human remains oder Kolonialgeschichte konfrontiert; ihr zentrales Thema, der NS-Raub, hingegen ist den ethnologischen Sammlungen noch wenig vertraut. Doch damit nicht genug: Die ganz spezifischen Probleme der Museen im Osten Deutschlands betreffen alle. Bestände wurden nach dem Kriegsende 1945 von der Roten Armee in die Sowjetunion verbracht; in der sogenannten Schlossbergung wurden in der Sowjetischen Besatzungszone Hunderte von Schlössern geräumt und Teile des Inventars auch auf Museen verteilt. In der DDR gab es dann unterschiedliche Formen der Enteignung privater Sammler. Kurz gesagt: Für Völkerkundemuseen im Osten gibt es eine Vielzahl von potentiell problembehafteten Objekten, nicht nur aus kolonialen Kontexten. Die Lösungsansätze für diese unterschiedlichen Problemfelder können unterschiedlich sein, auch hinsichtlich verschiedener Rechtslagen; bei den Recherchemethoden hingegen gibt es zahlreiche Synergieeffekte.

    Abstract: Koloniale Sammlungen und Archive bedingten die kuratorische Arbeit an der Ausstellung. Deren Ordnungen und Sichtweisen verdeutlichten die Umstände und Interessenslagen, aus denen heraus sie entstanden. Zugleich weisen die Sammlungen und Archive sowohl Ausschlüsse und Verunsicherungen als auch Handlungsspielräume auf. Aus dieser Spannung heraus entwickelte die Ausstellung einen reflexiven Umgang mit ethnologischen und anthropologischen Objekten, indem sie diese als Zeugnisse kolonialer Begegnungen und Ereignisse begriff und die vielfältigen Wegen nachzeichnete, auf denen sie in ihrer Entstehung, Aneignung und Zirkulation mit den kolonialen Machtverhältnissen verflochten sind. Eine kuratorische Praxis, die sich auf koloniales Material stützt und dieses zugleich hinterfragt, wird anhand ausgewählter Objekte zur Diskussion gestellt.

    Abstract: Gerade bei Sammlungszuwächsen aus der Kolonialzeit spielt die Frage der Provenienz ethnografischer Objekte eine wichtige Rolle. Bei ihnen gilt es heutzutage in besonderem Maße, die Rechtmäßigkeit des Bestandes zu klären. Mit ersten Ergebnissen der hauseigenen Provenienzforschung an der ethnografischen Sammlung widmete das Landesmuseum Hannover von Oktober 2016 bis Februar 2017 diesem Thema eine große Ausstellung, in der die vielfältigen Verflechtungen Hannovers in der Kolonialzeit ebenso beleuchtet wie aktuelle Bezüge hergestellt wurden. Nach einer Einführung in die historischen Denkmodelle wurde die deutsche Kolonialzeit anhand ausgewählter Stücke und der biografischen Vernetzungen der jeweiligen Sammler erfahrbar gemacht. Eine weitere wichtige Gliederungsebene wurde durch die Darstellung der indigenen Widerstände gegen die deutsche Kolonialpräsenz erzeugt, wodurch ein mehrperspektivisches Lesen der Ausstellung möglich war. In einem zweiten Teil wurde die postkoloniale Situation beleuchtet. Schließlich wurden Wege des zeitgemäßen Umgangs mit dem »heiklen Erbe « aufgezeigt. Fragen und Grenzen der Provenienzforschung waren dabei explizit mit einbezogen.

    Abstract: Ein wichtiger Teil der Provenienzforschung, die zurzeit im Rahmen des Projekts »Schwieriges Erbe: Zum Umgang mit kolonialzeitlichen Objekten in ethnologischen Museen« im Linden-Museum stattfindet, dient der Entwicklung und Erprobung eines Ansatzes zur systematischen Auseinandersetzung mit den kolonialzeitlichen Objektbeständen ethnologischer Museen. Im Hinblick darauf, dass diese Forschung immer auch auf eine umfassende »dichte« Kontextualisierung dieser Bestände zielt, wird zurzeit die Anfertigung von Sammlungsprofilen als erster Schritt eines systematischen Ansatzes erprobt. Ausgangspunkt sind dabei jene Menschen, die Objekte an das Museum gegeben haben, die persönlich-beruflichen Hintergründe dieser Objektgeber sowie die Zeiträume, in denen sie aktiv waren. Mithilfe dieser Profile lassen sich spezifische Bestandstrukturen aufdecken und eine gezielte, proaktive Auswahl jener Objektkonvolute vornehmen, deren Provenienzen als nächstes untersucht werden sollen. Die Förderung des Projekts, das das Linden-Museum und die Universität Tübingen gemeinsam durchführen, erfolgt durch den Exploration Fund der Plattform 4 der Exzellenzinitiative der Universität Tübingen mit dem Ziel ein langfristiges Forschungsprojekt zu etablieren.

    Abstract: Große Teile der Samoa-Sammlung des Münchner Museums Fünf Kontinente stammen aus dem Umfeld von Völkerschauen. Als Rekruteure und Impresarios fungierten die Brüder Marquardt, die zugleich um 1900 einen schwunghaften Handel mit Ethnographica betrieben. Ein am Museum initiiertes Forschungsprojekt widmete sich der detaillierten Rekonstruktion dieser Samoa- Völkerschauen und der von den Marquardts erworbenen Sammlungen. Neben der Auswertung hiesiger Archivalien stand dabei besonders die Erschließung samoanischer Schriftquellen und mündlicher Überlieferungen im Zentrum der Untersuchung. Zeitgenössische samoanische Zeugnisse und Interviews mit Nachfahren der Völkerschau-Reisenden eröffneten Perspektiven und historisch-kulturelle Facetten, die in den europäischen Quellen völlig fehlen. Die Herausforderungen der aus dem Projekt resultierenden Ausstellung sind ebenfalls Thema dieses Beitrags: die Zusammenführung europäischer und samoanischer Perspektiven, die Gewichtung konkurrierender samoanischer Stimmen und die symbolische Anerkennung kolonialen Unrechts.

    Abstract: Restitutionsforderungen bedürfen in der Regel einer detaillierten Analyse der konkreten Umstände der Provenienzen der jeweiligen Objekte, sowie der Interessen der die Ansprüche erhebenden Personen und Parteien. Dies gilt auch für den sog. tange, einen Schiffsschnabel aus der Region Douala (Kamerun), der 1885 als Geschenk von Max Buchner in die Königlichen Ethnologischen Sammlungen (später Museum für Völkerkunde, heute Museum Fünf Kontinente) kam. Buchner nahm im Jahre 1884 den tange als Kriegsbeute von Häuptling Kum'a Mbape (»Lock Priso«) in Hickorytown in Besitz, als deutsche Truppen ihren Verbündeten King Bell in einem bewaffneten Konflikt unterstützten. Seit Mitte der 1990er Jahre erhebt Professor Prinz Kum'a Ndumbe III. den Anspruch, dass er als Nachfahre von Kum'a Mbape der legitime Erbe dieses tange ist und dass er diesen nach Duala restituiert sehen möchte. Aber es gibt auch andere Stimmen, Vorstellungen und Perspektiven dazu – in Europa und in Kamerun. Um miteinander ins Gespräch zu kommen, fand im Mai 2016 ein erstes persönliches Treffen im Museum zwischen Kum'a Ndumbe und Vertretern der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, des Freistaates Bayern und des Museums Fünf Kontinente statt. Alle Parteien stimmten darin überein, dass der tange von einem »Zankapfel« in ein Symbol der Kooperation verwandelt werden sollte.

    Abstract: Ausgangspunkt des Vortrags waren Objekte der Aranda in Zentral-Australien, die vom Weltkulturen Museum in Frankfurt zwischen 1904 und 1913 erworben wurden. Es handelt sich vor allem um sensible, als secret/sacred eingestufte Ritualobjekte. Ihr Sammler Carl Strehlow leitete von 1894 bis 1922 die evangelisch-lutherische Mission in Hermannsburg. Zwar profitierte Strehlow in seiner Sammeltätigkeit ganz allgemein von einem kolonialen Ungleichgewicht in der Machtverteilung, doch kann man die hauptsächlich gegen Lebensmittel eingetauschten Objekte formell rechtlich nicht als Raubgut bezeichnen. Ist eine geklärte Provenienz der Schlüssel zur Lösung eines Wertkonflikts zwischen Wissenschaft und Herkunftskultur? Wie kann man zwischen den Rückgabeforderungen der Aborigines, den Museumsträgern und kulturpolitischen Vertretern vermitteln? Welche Formalien sind zu beachten und welche ethischen Fragen zu diskutieren?

    Abstract: Der Beitrag stellt zwei Projekte des Ethnologischen Museums Berlin vor, die infolge der »Wiederauffindung« von Kriegsbeuten aus dem Maji-Maji-Krieg (und weiteren militärischen Konflikten im heutigen Tansania) in den Museumssammlungen initiiert wurden: Zum einen wird in einem zweijährigen Projekt die Provenienz ausgewählter Bestände aus der Tansania-Sammlung vertiefend erforscht. Zum anderen hat das »Humboldt Lab Tanzania« (gefördert vom Fonds TURN der Kulturstiftung des Bundes) einen interdisziplinären kritischen Dialog zwischen Wissenschaftler*innen, Kulturschaffenden und Museumskurator*innen aus Deutschland und Tansania angestoßen, dessen Ergebnisse Anfang 2017 in Tansania in der Ausstellung Living inside the story präsentiert wurden. Im Fokus der Autorinnen steht insbesondere die Notwendigkeit, die langfristige Zusammenarbeit mit Akteur*innen aus den jeweiligen Herkunftsregionen der Objekte als unabdingbare Voraussetzung für ethnologische Provenienzforschung zu etablieren.

    Abstract: In Namibia, it is difficult today to locate many historical artefacts that embody the cultural identity of communities. Yet these objects have been collected and, often, archived (rather than displayed) in museums beyond the continent. The internet gives access to a disparate »virtual museum« of Namibian cultural heritage. The »Africa Accessioned« project aims to locate and list the diaspora of African ethnographic collections held in European museums as a tool to generate dialogue and collaborative projects. We see the project as a concept that could be extended, a concept that operates with little or no financial resources. Four African countries provided the initial focus for the project: Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The project initially mapped relevant collections held in Finland, Germany, Sweden, and the UK. A secondary exercise has documented Namibian collections in Finnish museums in more detail and will be used to demonstrate the project’s potential to develop the notion of the »museum as process«. However, the presentation will also speculate on the ways in which German museums might engage more effectively with Namibian communities. The project recognises the contextual framework of the circulation of material culture along colonial trade routes. It seeks to position museums as mediums for global dialogue. Conversations can enable source communities to provide greater historical depth regarding the intangible cultural heritage and places which provide a more complete biography of an object in a collection. However, establishing mechanisms to enable effective dialogue remains a challenge. The project is not a campaign for the repatriation of all African artefacts to the continent, but it will initiate debate about the provenance and significance of some artefacts. We believe that the willingness to review collections and to address the past can stimulate inter-cultural dialogue and lead to positive co-operation. European museums need to engage with this legacy, but should see dialogue as an opportunity, rather than a threat. Collections can generate connections. Museums can build bridges, rather than barriers, between communities.

    Abstract: What are the potential benefits of digital networks and databases that collect information from different sources – and what are their disadvantages? My contribution details the Research Reciprocal Network (RRN) and its approach to sourcing object provenance. The RRN is a collaborative online database created by the Museum of Anthropology (MOA) in Vancouver, Canada, through the »A Partnership of Peoples« project. The U’mista Cultural Centre is one of four co-developers of this groundbreaking online database. Focused on Northwest Coast museum collections, this research website supports the exchange of information from traditional knowledge keepers and academics alike. Users can share information, create discussions, collaboratively write documents, or upload files regarding specific objects from any particular partner holding institute. This unique platform facilitates collaboration and creates easy access to information to a greater audience, benefiting museum collections and the artefacts’ communities of origin. Provenance is especially important when speaking about collections of the Pacific Northwest Coast of British Columbia; mainly because of the way many of these artefacts have been taken and dispersed around the world. The RRN is a great way to learn multiple histories of objects from many contributors, but what are the pros and cons of this platform?
