Abstract: Reconnecting migration studies and the theory of valuation, this collection offers an interdisciplinary approach to the study of transnational music practices. Abstract: Die Analyse der Wechselwirkungen von Kulturpolitik, Musikvermittlung und jugendlichen Identitätskonstruktionen im Spannungsfeld der durch Migration und andere Einflüsse wie die hohe Mobilität von Informationen globalisierten Komplexität heutiger Gesellschaften legt die Entstehung von Jugendkulturen am Beispiel Hamburg offen. «Imaginäre Identitätsmythen» als Repräsentationssystem der Interkultur werden analysiert und ihre Zuschreibungsmechanismen, ihr exotisierendes Othering offengelegt. Durch die Feldstudie werden die Perspektiven der Kultur- und Bildungspolitik und der freien Kulturträger mit den Perspektiven der Jugendlichen in Korrelation gebracht. Gefragt wird, ob der Blickwinkel der Kulturpolitik einschränkend oder fördernd auf Jugendliche wirkt, und ob er mit den kulturellen Bedürfnissen der Jugendlichen übereinstimmt. Die Aktualität der Analyse liegt nicht zuletzt in der Brisanz segregierender Tendenzen im öffentlichen Meinungsklima in Bezug auf «Jugendliche mit Migrationshintergrund». Die Ergebnisse der Forschung liefern Empfehlungen, deren Umsetzung eine wünschenswerte, wenn nicht gar notwendige Adaption der Kulturpolitik an die Realitäten des heutigen postmigrantischen Gesellschaftsprozesses darstellt. Anstelle der Verfestigung von segregierenden Zuschreibungen Vorschub zu leisten, bietet eine solche transkulturelle Perspektive die Möglichkeit, Verflechtungen, Interaktionen und (auch widersprüchliche) Gemeinsamkeiten im globalisierten Kontext als Vorteil zu begreifen und sich der Ermöglichung von postmigrantischer Normalität zu verschreiben.

Abstract: This dissertation sketches the interaction between music mediation, cultural policies, and identity construction in today’s complex societies. Likewise, this study reveals how a global transcultural youth culture is emerging and developing under the influence of institutional structures. The debates on migration, which have continued to flare up in Germany since the early 1990s, and which are dominated by defensive attitudes regarding what is «one’s own» and other segregating tendencies, show the need for counteracting these tendencies by uncovering the underlying «imagined intercultural identities». The analysis of the «othering» in discourses of multi- or interculturalism within the «dispositive of interculture» and its educational and political objectives demonstrates how one tries to present the «exotic other» as homogenous. The ethnographic field study analyses how intercultural policies construct and label their target group through ascriptions of otherness, and, in doing so, uncovers which concepts of culture are applied by those responsible for intercultural projects and policies. Furthermore, it displays whether the attributed meanings and identities prove to be right at all. The results of this analysis demonstrate how a «transcultural» perspective can reveal an alternative point of view in cultural policies. This leads to the conclusion that cultural politics should and need to adapt to the realities of today’s post-migrant social processes. A transcultural post-migrant perspective in cultural politics centers on interactions, crossroads and (contradictory) commonalities, without emphasizing segregating tendencies. Likewise, these features are regarded as advantages within globalized settings and can lead to policies that underline the promotion of post-migrancy as a part of normal life.

Abstract: This volume demonstrates that a richer notion of spatiotemporal organization in the arts and beyond can allow contouring, especially in the interaction of different disciplines. Central to this is the concept of rhythm, which is meaningful for various artistic disciplines as well as history and cultural studies. The contributions follow up on the related concepts of balance and of meter, whereupon they formulate further theoretical perspectives which are a desideratum even in musicology.

Abstract: Dieser Band zeigt, dass sich gerade im Zusammenwirken unterschiedlicher Disziplinen ein gehaltvoller Begriff raumzeitlicher Organisation in den Künsten und über sie hinaus konturieren lässt.Im Zentrum steht dabei der Begriff des Rhythmus, der in den verschiedenen künstlerischen Disziplinen, aber auch in der Geschichte und der Kulturwissenschaft von Bedeutung ist. Die Beiträge gehen dem im Zusammenhang mit den damit verbundenen Begriffen der Balance und des Metrums nach, wobei sie weitergehende theoretische Perspektiven formulieren, die selbst in der Musikwissenschaft ein Desiderat sind.

Abstract: This volume demonstrates that a richer notion of spatiotemporal organization in the arts and beyond can allow contouring, especially in the interaction of different disciplines. Central to this is the concept of rhythm, which is meaningful for various artistic disciplines as well as history and cultural studies. The contributions follow up on the related concepts of balance and of meter, whereupon they formulate further theoretical perspectives which are a desideratum even in musicology.

Abstract: Stadt und Vergnügen waren um 1900 eng miteinander verbunden. Tanzveranstaltungen und Theater, Kino und Kneipen boten den Großstadtbewohnern vielfältige Möglichkeiten, ihrem Bedürfnis nach Freizeitgestaltung und Unterhaltung nachzugehen. Gleichzeitig prägten die Vergnügungsangebote zunehmend das Stadtbild.Ausgehend von der Beobachtung, dass die Herausbildung einer modernen Vergnügungskultur nicht ohne die Urbanisierung gedacht werden kann und dass die Vergnügungskultur eine wichtige Rolle im Prozess der Anpassung an das Leben in der Großstadt spielte, untersucht der Band die Wechselwirkungen zwischen Metropole und Vergnügen um 1900. Das Spektrum der Beiträge reicht vom Vergnügungsviertel bis zum Kiezvergnügen, von Mode auf der Theaterbühne und politischen Massenveranstaltungen bis hin zu Alpenbällen und Musikautomaten

Abstract: Städte haben ihren individuellen Sound - einen Klang, der sich auch musikalisch darstellt. Dazu gehört - aber nicht nur - die Umsetzung von industriellem Krach in futuristische »rumori« oder konkreten »bruit«. Städte sind Zentren der Kommunikation, hochaktive Knotenpunkte globaler Netzwerke. Hier treffen Menschen mit den unterschiedlichsten ethnischen, sozialen und kulturellen Hintergründen sowie musikalischen Bedürfnissen und Fähigkeiten aufeinander. Aus dieser Konfrontation entstehen Musiken, in denen sich ihr Anderssein und ihre Identität manifestieren, in denen sich aber auch Spuren der Anpassung und Integration finden - und die fast immer populäre Musikformen annehmen. Denn die Stadt als Handelsplatz macht zur Ware, was zuvor als Volksmusik mündlich tradiert wurde oder als Kunst gemeint war. Die Stadt ermöglicht unendlich viele Chancen der Kommunikation, die doch nie ausreichend zu sein scheinen.

Damit liefert die Studie neue Impulse für die gegenwärtigen jugendkultursoziologischen Diskussionen

Abstract: Soul-Musik und »Black Power«-Solidarität, blonde »Afros« und schwarz-weiße Werbekampagnen: Afroamerikanisches hatte in verschiedenen Feldern der Gegen- und Popkultur der Bundesrepublik um 1968 Konjunktur. Diese Studie zeigt Formen und Hintergründe der »Afroamerikanophilie« auf und zeichnet damit ein ungewohntes Bild der Zeit um 1968, als ein zunehmend »exklusives« afroamerikanisches Selbstbewusstsein entstand und die »weiße« Suche nach imaginären Einlassstellen in die »schwarze« Welt zugleich eine neue Qualität gewann. Aus einer Vielzahl von Quellen werden dabei auch theoretische Fragen nach dem Zusammenspiel von Identifikation und Solidarität, Rassismus, Aneignung und Nachahmung entwickelt

Abstract: Mehr als zehn Jahre engagierte sich die VolkswagenStiftung mit den Initiativen »Das 'Fremde' und das 'Eigene' - Probleme und Möglichkeiten interkulturellen Verstehens« (1992 - 1999) und »Konstruktionen des 'Fremden' und des 'Eigenen': Prozesse interkultureller Abgrenzung, Vermittlung und Identitätsbildung« (1999 - 2006) für die Forschungsfelder Interkulturalität und Identitätsbildungsprozesse. Insgesamt förderte die Stiftung in diesem Zusammenhang 181 Forschungsvorhaben. Die vorliegende Dokumentation bietet Wissenschaftler/inne/n, Journalist/inn/en und Praktiker/inne/n eine informative Übersicht über die Inhalte und wichtigsten Ergebnisse der geförderten Projekte. Mehr als 150 Autorinnen und Autoren aus unterschiedlichen Disziplinen prägen den lebendigen Stil dieser ambitionierten Dokumentation, die aktuellste Forschungsergebnisse disziplinübergreifend zum wichtigen Thema »Interkulturalität« zusammenträgt und einer interessierten Öffentlichkeit zugänglich machen möchte

Abstract: In the two decades after World War II, Germans on both sides of the iron curtain fought vehemently over American cultural imports. Uta G. Poiger traces how westerns, jeans, jazz, rock 'n' roll, and stars like Marlon Brando or Elvis Presley reached adolescents in both Germanies, who eagerly adopted the new styles. Poiger reveals that East and West German authorities deployed gender and racial norms to contain Americanized youth cultures in their own territories and to carry on the ideological Cold War battle with each other. Poiger's lively account is based on an impressive array of sources, ranging from films, newspapers, and contemporary sociological studies, to German and U.S. archival materials."Jazz, Rock, and Rebels" examines diverging responses to American culture in East and West Germany by linking these to changes in social science research, political cultures, state institutions, and international alliance systems. In the first two decades of the Cold War, consumer culture became a way to delineate the boundaries between East and West. This pathbreaking study, the first comparative cultural history of the two Germanies, sheds new light on the legacy of Weimar and National Socialism, on gender and race relations in Europe, and on Americanization and the Cold War.
