Kurzfassung: "Bringing together prominent scholars in the field, this Handbook provides an interdisciplinary exploration of the complex interrelationship between migration and welfare. Chapters explore the extent to which immigration policy affects - and is affected by - welfare states, from both economic and political perspectives. This Handbook also examines the effects of emigration on sending societies exploring issues such as the impact of remittances, diasporas, and skill deterioration as a result of human capital flight on capacity building and on economic and political development more generally. Contributors draw on both qualitative and quantitative research to illuminate the contours and patterns of this complex relationship. This includes the assumed tension-reducing role of multiculturalist and integration policies, the shaping of native beliefs about migrants by socio-economic constraints and the potential for the extension of social rights to migrants to influence and increase pro-redistributive attitudes. Investigating the drivers of welfare chauvinism and its effects on social trust between native and immigrant groups, the Handbook also provides insights into the latest theoretical and empirical findings regarding the progressive's dilemma, one of the most formidable policy challenges leaders of modern societies face. Breaking new theoretical and empirical ground, this cutting-edge Handbook is essential reading for academics, researchers and students in political science, economics, sociology, social policy and political philosophy, particularly those focused on global migration and changing attitudes to welfare. It will also benefit policymakers looking for new data and pioneering perspectives on immigration policy and the future of welfare states in a changing world economy"--

Conclusion: has the shared pandemic experience created a collective awakening?
Kurzfassung: This book explores how the U.S. has been in the throes of a startup revolution, fueled by a risk-taking culture. There has been a growth of young startups from 1994, accelerating after 2010 through the present day. Most entrepreneurial activity is in the professional and business services sector, which comprises technical services as well as research and development. However, new establishments face a low survival rate, suggesting that starting businesses is not the problem, sustaining their development and growth is the principal challenge. A paradox is presented by the simultaneous presence of declining labor force participation rates among prime working age adults, a decrease in productivity growth rates in the past decade and a startup revolution. Entrepreneurship can be defined by four native skills that are acquired by experience rather than formal education: resourcefulness, practical intelligence, over-optimism and personal initiative. They emerge from an underlying culture of risk-taking which embraces collaboration, openness to new ideas and an awareness of the environment and the needs of people. Connectivity and shared experiences create communities which provide a sense of belonging and identity through the narrative portrayed and the shared values established. A risk-taking culture is born in such an environment, it cannot be taught but must be learned through experience. Swati Bhatt received her Ph.D. in Economics from Princeton University in 1986 and has been a faculty member there since 1992. Her research interests include the economics of digitization and industrial organization with a focus on the technology industry. Bhatt was a research economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York (1985-1990) and taught at New York University's Stern School of Business (1990-1992). Her publications include: How Digital Communication Technology Shapes Markets (2017) and The Attention Deficit: Unintended Consequences of Digital Connectivity (2019). .

Kurzfassung: “A clear and systematic exploration of a wide range of issues in the evaluation of the idea of Basic Income and of various Basic Income implementation schemes. Torry’s essays bring admirable clarity and precision to the discussion of the terms and concepts necessary to understanding the nuances of different perspectives on unconditional, universal, and individual cash transfers. The book manages to be simultaneously useful to experts and accessible to newcomers to the topic” --Almaz Zelleke, Professor of Practice in Political Science, New York University Shanghai “In an atmosphere where there is so much confusion about what a genuine basic income is, this collection of essays by Dr Malcolm Torry is welcome and much needed. He masterfully and elegantly separates the grain from the chaff. It is timely and answers the critical questions that the idea of basic income evokes. Having been invested in this radical idea for several decades, Dr Torry brings authority, conviction, and simplicity into these essays. This is a ‘must read’ as much to scholars and policymakers as to lay people.” --Dr. Sarath Davala is an Indian sociologist and currently the chair of the Basic Income Earth Network (BIEN). The global Basic Income debate is now widespread, diverse, and relatively well resourced by academic and more popular literature: but that does not mean that there is universal agreement about every topic of discussion. In fact, there is still a quite heated debate about some of the most basic questions, such as ‘What is a Basic Income?’ ‘What’s the point?’, and ‘Is it feasible?’ This book is not yet another general introduction to Basic Income. There are already plenty of those. It is entirely about those aspects of the debate about which there is most discussion and sometimes the most conflict. It is based on conference papers, previously published chapters, and other previously published articles, working papers, and reports: material that has already benefited from consultation and debate, as is appropriate for a book about aspects of a debate that are the subject of frequent consultation and discussion. Malcolm Torry is a visiting fellow at the Institute for Policy Research at the University of Bath and a trustee and treasurer of the Basic Income Earth Network (BIEN). He was previously the director of the Citizen’s Basic Income Trust and a senior visiting fellow at the London School of Economics. .

Kurzfassung: This textbook introduces readers to essential tools, techniques and methods for intertemporal and strategic modeling in economics. It presents a variety of analytical models covering both dynamic processes and strategic interaction. Students will learn the basic mechanisms associated with the intertemporal approach, on the one hand, and game theory, i.e., the strategic approach, on the other. In addition, a wide range of applications are explored, including growth models, labor markets, international trade, and individual decision-making. Intended for upper undergraduate and graduate students in economics and related fields with a background in mathematics and calculus, this textbook provides a comprehensive introduction to economic modeling and its applications. By avoiding excessive formalism and exploring straightforward examples and applications, it is optimally suited for graduate courses in economics and finance.

Kurzfassung: This book provides an evaluation of the industrial organization of banking with a focus on the interrelationship among bank behavior, market structure, and regulation. It addresses a wide range of public policy topics, including bank competition and risk, international banking, antitrust issues, and capital regulation. New to this edition, which has been updated throughout, is a broadened consideration of alternative theories of competition among banks, which includes discussions of such issues as the implications of large increases in bank reserve holdings in recent years, effects of nonprice competition through quality rivalry, analysis of mixed market structures involving both large and small banks, and international interactions of banks and policymakers. The intent of the book is to serve as a learning tool and reference for graduate students, academics, bankers, and policymakers seeking to better understand the industrial organization of the banking sector and the effects of banking regulations.

Kurzfassung: A world without capitalism? -- Capitalism and its spectral realities -- What's in a name: 'Working' or 'middle' class? -- The crucial role of race in American capitalism -- 'Working for the clampdown' -- Workplaces, the city, and the world -- The socio-spatialities of capital: Urban landscapes and alternative imaginaries -- What is to be done?
Kurzfassung: "In this book, Christian W. Chun examines the ways in which identities, discourses and topographies of both capitalist and anti-capitalist imaginaries and realities are embodied in the everyday practices of people. A World Without Capitalism? is a sociolinguistic ethnography that explores the heretofore limited research in applied linguistics and sociolinguistics on the discursive and materialized representations and enactments of capitalism. Engaging across disciplinary fields, including applied linguistics, ethnography, political economy, philosophy, and cultural studies, Chun investigates in ethnographic detail how capitalism does and does not pervade people's everyday experiences. This book aims to further contribute to a much-needed understanding of how discourses operate in the co-constructions of capitalist and anti-capitalist imaginaries and instantiated realities and practices as narrated, lived, and embodied by people and material artifacts. This book is vital reading for students and researchers working in the fields of applied linguistics, discourse analysis and cultural studies, as well as those interested in understanding capitalism and questioning how to live beyond it."

Kurzfassung: "Climate Crisis Economics draws on economics, political economy, scientific literature, and data to gauge the extent to which our various communities - political, economic, business - are making the essential leap to a new narrative and policy approach that will accelerate us towards the necessary transition to a decarbonised economy and sustainable future. The book draws out policies and practices with both national and local examples, which will demonstrate various complementary approaches that are empowering states and people as they seek to pursue the carbon neutral goal. The author delineates a climate crisis economics approach that is fit for purpose and which can help achieve necessary climate change goals in the decades ahead. Ensuring economic and ecological sustainability is neither easy nor cost-free; there is no single solution to the climate crisis. All aspects of our economies, policies, business, and personal practices must come into alignment in order to succeed. Frustratingly, we know what is needed and we have many of the technologies and systems to make the leap to a carbon neutral economy, yet we still fail to act with alacrity. Leaders, communities, and businesses must shift their narratives in how they talk about and think about the climate crisis. In doing so, in making the narrative leap to a new understanding about what is possible and necessary, we can stop endangering our common future and single, fragile, global habitat, and instead set the stage for Green Globalisation 2.0 and a new sustainable industrial revolution. Climate Crisis Economics will appeal to academics, students, investors, and professionals from varying disciplines including politics, international political economy, and international economics. Written in an accessible voice, it draws on work in fields outside of and in addition to politics and economics to make a case for climate crisis economics as an approach to addressing the climate change challenge ahead"--

Kurzfassung: "The Moving City is a rich and intimate account of urban transformation told through the story of Delhi's Metro, a massive infrastructure project reshaping the city's social and urban landscapes. Presented as a series of ethnographic vignettes, Rashmi Sadana introduces the feel and form of the Metro and lets readers experience the city, scene by scene, stop by stop, as if they, too, have come along for the ride. It is a book that lays bare the radical possibilities and concretized inequalities of the Metro, how people live with and through the built environment, a story of women and men on the move, the nature of Indian aspiration, and what it takes morally and materially to sustain urban life. Through exquisite prose, Sadana transports the reader into a city shaped by its metro and those who depend on it, offering a revealing and unique perspective on Delhi unlike any other"--

Kurzfassung: "Technology is not just limited to technology companies, it impacts sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, and security. In the last few decades, countries, too, have started developing technologies or integrating technologies into their systems. As a result, all countries, regardless of size, need to understand the management of engineering and technology concepts. Digital Transformations reviews fundamentals and applications through existing and emerging technologies all around the world. Big data availability and the emergence of new tools provide opportunities to detect the emergence of new technologies. Some of the major elements of such analyses include bibliometrics, patent analysis and social network analysis. The authors focus on these three tools and demonstrate their use through applications such as Blockchain, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, 3D printing, Wireless Power, Autonomous and Electric Driving, and Smart Homes. Through the examination of cases based on emerging technologies, the book provides a spectrum of these recent applications and serves as a reference for professionals, researchers and students on fundamentals of technology utilization tools"--

Kurzfassung: This open access handbook is distinguished by its emphasis on international energy, rather than domestic energy policies or international geopolitical aspects. Addressing key topics such as energy production and distribution, renewables and global energy trends, regional case studies and emerging areas such as the digitalization of energy and energy transition, this handbook provides a major new contribution to the field of international energy economics. Professor Manfred Hafner teaches economics and (geo)-politics of international energy at the SciencesPo Paris School of International Affairs (PSIA) and at The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS-Europe). Until recently he directed the “Geopolitics and Energy Transition” research program at the Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM). He also runs his own energy strategy consultancy with which he has over the last decades extensively advised governments, international organizations and the energy industry. Professor Giacomo Luciani leads the Master in International Energy at the Paris School of International Affairs, Sciences Po, which he established in 2011. He is also adjunct professor of interdisciplinary studies at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva; and Visiting Professor in the Master in Commodity Trading of the Graduate School of Economics and Management of the University of Geneva.

Kurzfassung: This book presents the most compelling arguments for and against implementing a basic income guarantee today, in the voice of proponents and critics, in alternating chapters. Tables, figures, and pictures illustrate the key concepts and evidence, which include benefit cliffs and disincentive deserts, time series macroeconomic data, business, economic, and technological change (BETC), artificial intelligence and other general purpose technologies, along with advanced robotics, the environmental Kuznets Curve, income distributions, democracy, social justice, dependence, autonomy, and economic freedom. A neutral, non-partisan tone introduction defines UBI and covers the history of universal income plans, while the conclusion summarizes the main arguments for and against UBI before surveying alternative policies, including universal basic asset, credit, service, job, and training plans. Kurzfassung: "Bringing together analyses of eight countries from America, Europe and Asia, this book offers an invaluable contribution to understanding the nature and trends of the economic debate in recent years, in which the Covid pandemic led the world into panic and paralyzed national economies.” Hugo da Gama Cerqueira, Dean of the Faculty of Economic Sciences, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil This book examines and classifies different reactions to the COVID-19 pandemic from economists across the world. With the impacts of the pandemic experienced differently in each country, specific case studies are provided to highlight how the economics profession has responded to the challenges that have emerged from COVID-19. Key debates, such as the trade-off between health protective measures and the economic impacts of closing important sectors, are discussed, with a focus on the responses in China, the USA, Italy, France, Russia, Argentina, Brazil, India, and Palestine. This book explores the ability of economists to respond to economic and social crises, and provides insight into the ties between economic theory and economic policy in the modern world. It will be relevant to students and researchers interested in how economists have responded to the COVID-19 and what changes it might trigger. Andrés Lazzarini is a Lecturer in Economics at Goldsmiths, University of London. Denis Melnik is Associate Professor in the Department of Theoretical Economics at the HSE University.

Kurzfassung: This book provides a guide to such budding social researchers, who are non-native English speakers drawing examples from literature to show how to conduct a research, present research results, integrate with existing literature to draw conclusions through real-world examples. Existing English books teaching research methods and philosophy of academic research are written in ‘academic English’ and, it is hard for non-native English-speaking budding researchers to study and understand those books. Also, this book uses examples to show how to communicate with journal editors and peer reviewers to get published the research results as journal articles, book chapters or conference papers. This book connects different quantitative techniques, qualitative methodologies (case studies, phenomenology and ethnography and Grounded theory) as well as Mixed methods methodology through a single example. This book attempts to describe a holistic approach introducing a 10Ps model that incorporates the essential elements of the research process. The process focuses on combining philosophical framework and arguments from research results. This book focuses not only on conducting a research project, but also on the approach and procedures to be followed to achieve higher marks for course work assignments and publishing research articles in international journals. This book shows how to create many papers from one research/data set to increase number of publications and citations. This book has fewer words and more illustrations, tables, figures, pictures and YouTube tutorial links. This book outlines how to present test results in APA style for all the statistical test used in this book, using examples.

Kurzfassung: This book provides advanced theoretical and applied tools for the implementation of modern micro-econometric techniques in evidence-based program evaluation for the social sciences. The author presents a comprehensive toolbox for designing rigorous and effective ex-post program evaluation using the statistical software package Stata. For each method, a statistical presentation is developed, followed by a practical estimation of the treatment effects. By using both real and simulated data, readers will become familiar with evaluation techniques, such as regression-adjustment, matching, difference-in-differences, instrumental-variables, regression-discontinuity-design, and synthetic control method, and are given practical guidelines for selecting and applying suitable methods for specific policy contexts. The second revised and extended edition features two new chapters on some recent development of difference-in-differences. Specifically, chapter 5 introduces advanced difference-in-differences methods when many times are available and treatment can be either time-varying or fixed at a specific time. Chapter 6 introduces the synthetic control method, a treatment effect estimation approach suitable when only one unit is treated. Both chapters present applications using the software Stata. .

Kurzfassung: This book focuses on the recovery and new normal in a post-Covid scenario, drawing important lessons from the pandemic and proposing new ideas for sustainable development, endogenous dynamism, and inclusive growth. The book presents different ideas and perspectives about the present and the future, reflecting on four main fields of our economic reality: macroeconomics, governments, technology, and society. It discusses important topics for future economic scenarios, beginning with an estimation of the economic consequences of the absence of an equitable distribution of vaccines. Further topics discussed include the government’s debts sustainability, the probability of an inflation/deflation or of a stagflation scenario, as well as the impact of US and European economic policies on economic growth. The book further investigates the economic costs of the pandemic, which have fallen most heavily on those least able to bear them. It examines governments subsidies, which supported people and firms through wage subsidies, unemployment benefits, and other fiscal measures, and discusses the question of whether more investment in health care, education, and other public services will still be needed. In a time of immense change and global challenges, this book is a must-read for scholars, researchers, and students of economics, as well as policy-makers interested in a better understanding of economic growth, energy, environment, migration, development, digital transformation, and demography.

Kurzfassung: Energy policies play a pivotal part in helping countries achieve their sustainable development goals. Further, energy is one of the critical raw materials in companies’ production processes. Therefore, ensuring a steady energy supply is essential to increasing production; otherwise, countries will inevitably slide into recession. In this context, countries should select their energy policies on the basis of a comprehensive analysis. In order to achieve this goal, many different factors must be considered at the same time. The aim of this book is to determine the right energy policies for the sustainable economic development of countries. In this framework, effective strategies for different types of energy will be presented and vital issues such as determining the right locations for nuclear power plants, providing optimal government incentives to increase clean energy investments, and determining appropriate energy policies to reduce energy dependence will be examined. Thus, country-specific optimal energy policies will be outlined, contributing to the achievement of the UN’s sustainable development goals (SDG).

Kurzfassung: This Handbook offers an interdisciplinary and international benchmark text for anyone wanting to understand job quality. Job quality matters and has long done so. Debate about the future of work today centres on the impact of the new digital technologies, compounding existing concerns about the restructuring of employment and, importantly, proliferation of poor-quality jobs, often within the context of neo-liberal hegemony since the 1980s and the consequences of the Global Financial Crisis of the 2000s. Whilst job quality is offered as a solution to a range of challenges, it needs to be understood in all its complexity in terms of what it affects and what affects it. This Handbook draws together: first, an explicit focus on job quality as a factor in itself and as producing instrumental effects on other processes and outcomes; second, a catalogue of the diverse range of multiple contributions and applications; third, the complexity and multiple interpretations of job quality as a concept; and fourth avenues for job quality improvement. Each chapter provides distinct viewpoints on why job quality matters. As the volume attests, there are a range of ways in which job quality is relevant to an equally broad range of social, economic and political concerns.

Kurzfassung: In recent decades, new endogenous growth theory has become popular but the ideas are not new. They go back at least as far as Adam Smith, and the subsequent contributions made notably by Alfred Marshall and Allyn Young. This book critically discusses and provides an historical perspective to the entire spectrum of endogenous growth theories starting with Adam Smith and ending with Paul Romer. It fills an important gap in the literature. While contributions of individual authors are readily available, there is no comprehensive study on the subject covering such a vast ground, critically discussing these authors in a comprehensive framework. It collates all the arguments and economic viewpoints in one collection, providing both the seasoned economist and a graduate economist with a critical comparison of origin, mechanisms, conclusions, and policy implications of these models. Ramesh Chandra received his PhD in Economics from the University of Strathclyde, UK, and studied economics at the Delhi School of Economics, University of California (Berkeley) and University of Glasgow. He has held professorships at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration and Indian Council of Research on International Economic Relations, India, among others. His research interests include trade policy and growth, the relationship between economic thought and development economics, and the history of economic thought. He has published extensively including a book Allyn Abbott Young.

Kurzfassung: This Second Edition updates the companion workbook to match the new edition of the textbook Principles of Microeconomics. Each chapter features a wide variety of exercises, ranging from basic multiple-choice questions to challenging mathematical problems and case study scenarios. The textbook pursues an integrative approach to modern microeconomics by critically reflecting on the main findings of economics from a philosophical standpoint and comparing them to approaches found in the social sciences. It adopts an institutional perspective to analyze the potential and limitations of different market types, and highlights implications for the design of the legal system and business practices throughout. In addition to traditional rational-choice models, important findings from behavioral economics and psychology are also presented.

Kurzfassung: This book is an applications-oriented text designed for individuals who desire a hands-on approach to analyzing the effects of fiscal and monetary policies. Significantly updated for the fourth edition, the text provides an understanding of the global economy in the wake of the COVID crisis, discussing topics such as pandemic related supply and demand-side shocks, the role of Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) in financing COVID rescue plans, the effect of the US, India, Eurozone and China’s post-COVID economies on emerging and transitioning economies, and the resurgence of inflation. This edition includes deeper coverage on the issue of budget deficit sustainability and on trade wars, especially in a global context, and revisits the life cycles of speculative asset price (SAP) bubbles, especially in the housing markets and in SPACs. The fourth edition contains several brand-new cases and media articles that are carefully positioned to relate explicitly to theory, and to look ahead to and preempt global macro situations and polices in the years to come. MBA students and Executive MBA students who appreciate the importance of monetary and fiscal analysis will find this text to be right on target. Financial analysts and individual investors who need to strip away economic myths and jargon and systematically examine and understand the effects of macro policies on variables such as inflation, output, employment and interest rates, will also find the book extremely useful.

Kurzfassung: Part I: Regional Economic Base Theory -- Part II: Regional Economic Models and Applications -- Part III: Regional Economic Case Studies.
Kurzfassung: This textbook offers an introduction to empirical regional economics, including a comprehensive and systematic overview of the fundamentals, history, development, and applications of economic base models. It not only provides a sound basis for regional economics and regional economic analysis, but it also includes numerous applications of the underlying theory. The book has an empirical orientation, highlighting the value of observation and testing in order to explain regional economic behavior. Theory plays an important role in this study, but it is only a starting point. The book is divided into three parts: the first discusses the economic base theory of regional growth and the empirical evidence supporting it, while the second part covers the specification and application of four increasingly complex regional economic models: the economic base model, the input-output model, the interindustry econometric model, and the structural time-series model. Lastly, the third part presents forty-eight regional economic case studies organized under seven headings, including economic cycles, economic policy, and regional forecasting. Given its scope, the book appeals to upper-undergraduate and graduate students majoring in economics, economic geography, and business, as well as to anyone in the private or public sector interested in gaining a better understanding of practical methods of regional economic forecasting and analysis.

Kurzfassung: This is the third corrected and extended edition of a book on deterministic and stochastic Growth Theory and the computational methods needed to produce numerical solutions. Exogenous and endogenous growth, non-monetary and monetary models are thoroughly reviewed. Special attention is paid to the use of these models for fiscal and monetary policy analysis. Models under modern theories of the Business Cycle, New Keynesian Macroeconomics, and Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium models, can be all considered as special cases of economic growth models, and they can be analyzed by the theoretical and numerical procedures provided in the textbook. Analytical discussions are presented in full detail. The book is self-contained and it is designed so that the student advances in the theoretical and the computational issues in parallel. Spreadsheets are used to solve simple examples. Matlab files are provided on an accompanying website to illustrate theoretical results from all chapters as well as to simulate the effects of economic policy interventions. The logical structure of these program files is described in "Numerical exercise"-type of sections, where the output of these programs is also interpreted. The third edition corrects a few typographical errors, includes two new and original chapters on frequentist and Bayesian estimation, and improves some notation.

Cooperation vs. Competition in a World of Adversarial Power Centers -- Index.
Kurzfassung: History teaches us important lessons, provided we can discern its patterns. Multi-Polar Capitalism applies this insight to the crucial, yet often underappreciated issue of international monetary relations. When international monetary systems get first put into place successfully, such as the “classic” gold standard in 1879, Bretton Woods in 1945, or the dollar standard in 1982, they structure relations between the system’s centre and the rest of the world so that others can catch up to the leader. But this growth-promoting constellation, a vector for accelerating globalization, runs its course eventually amidst mounting overproduction conditions in key sectors and spreading financial instability. Such periods of global crisis, from the Great Depression of the 1930s to stagflation in the 1970s and creeping deflation during much of the 2010s, force restructuring and policy reforms until conditions are ripe for a renewed phase of sustained expansion. We are facing such a turning point now. As we are moving from a US-dominated world economy towards a multi-polar configuration, we will also see the longstanding dollar standard give way to a multi-currency system. Three currency blocs rooted in the dollar, euro, and yuan will be dominated respectively by the United States, the European Union, and China, each a power centre representing a distinct variant of capitalism. Their complex mix of competition and cooperation necessitates new “rules of the game” promoting the shared pursuit of global public goods, in particular the impending zero-carbon transition, lest we allow fragmentation and conflict shape this next chapter of our history. Multi-Polar Capitalism adds to a century of research and debate on long waves, those roughly half-century cycles first identified by the great Soviet economist Nikolai Kondratiev in the early 1920s, by highlighting the role of the international monetary system in this distinct boom-and-bust pattern. Robert Guttmann is Professor of Economics at Hofstra University, USA, and he is also affiliated with the Centre d’Économie Paris Nord (CEPN) of the Université Paris XIII in France. He studied in Vienna and at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA, before obtaining his PhD at the University of Greenwich, UK. He won “Distinguished Teacher of the Year” awards at Hofstra in 1989, 2004, and 2012. Professor Guttmann teaches international economics, monetary economics, financial regulation, and economic integration in the European Union. An expert in money and banking, international finance, and monetary theory, he has published numerous books and journal articles, including his best-selling books How Credit-Money Shapes the Economy (1994), Cybercash (2003), Finance-Led Capitalism (2016) and Eco-Capitalism (2018).

Kurzfassung: This volume offers new, convincing empirical evidence on topical risk- and risk management-related issues in diverse settings, using an interdisciplinary approach. The authors advance compelling arguments, firmly anchored to well-accepted theoretical frameworks, while adopting either qualitative or quantitative research methodologies. The book presents interviews and surveys with risk managers to gather insights on risk management and risk disclosure in practice. Additionally, the book collects and analyzes information contained in public reports to capture risk disclosure and perceptions on risk management impacts on companies’ internal organization. It sheds light on financial and market values to understand the effect of risk management on actual and perceived firm’s performance, respectively. Further, it examines the impacts of risk and risk management on society and the economy. The book improves awareness and advances knowledge on the complex and changeable risk and risk management fields of study. It interweaves among topical, up-to-date issues, peculiar, under-investigated contexts, and differentiated, complementary viewpoints on the same themes. Therefore, the book is a must-read for scholars and researchers, as well as practitioners and policy makers, interested in a better understanding of risk and risk management studies in different fields.

Kurzfassung: Over the last few years, we have witnessed an upsurge of enthusiasm about cryptocurrencies and, more generally, the so-called blockchain technology. In this new and updated edition, the authors explore what exactly these new technologies entail and promise. They argue that to understand the potential challenges and further developments in the market, one needs to develop an understanding of what needs these innovations fulfill and what business models are consistent with their use. For that, we need to sufficiently understand both the technology and how it affects the economic forces at play. This book goes beyond the headlines that say “blockchain will decentralize everything” and provides in-depth, rigorous analysis of what can be effectively decentralized and how this decentralization will work. The book draws not only on the general knowledge of digital currencies and blockchain technologies, but also on recent academic research on the topic. Featuring a fully updated chapter on cryptocurrencies and new chapters on smart contracts and enterprise blockchains, this book is critical reading for those interested in how technology developments impact business and society. Hanna Halaburda is Associate Professor of Technology, Operations and Statistics at the Stern School of Business at New York University, USA. Previously, she was on an assistant professor at Harvard Business School, USA; a visiting scholar at Columbia University, USA; and a senior economist at the Bank of Canada.

Kurzfassung: This book brings together insights and reflections following a set of interviews conducted with the main stakeholders involved in past, current, and future basic income experiments. It provides an analysis of some of the major elements and factors influencing experiments, as well of some of their most important outputs understood as results of their own experimental design, their sociological and political basis, and the epistemological status of their results. By pursuing a bottom-up strategy, where the interviews conducted take a pivotal role in the collection and analysis phase of the book, this book gathers key questions relating to policy experiments. Some questions reflected upon include the general idea of why one should engage and implement a basic income experiment, and the paradox consisting in the fact that most basic income experiments fall short of being closely considered “pure” basic income schemes. In facing the question and the paradox head-on, the book assesses questions of experimental design, the political and social context surrounding the policy, and the main results and what can they tell us about basic income. Roberto Merrill is an assistant professor of moral and political philosophy at the University of Minho, where he does research at the Centre for Ethics, Politics & Society. He has published and edited several books, the most recent one in 2019 on basic income (in Portuguese). He co-edited with Daniel Weinstock a book on Political Neutrality: a Re-evaluation (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014). Catarina Neves holds an MSc in Management with a minor in social enterprise from Nova School of Business and Economics. She is currently working in her PhD thesis on the philosophical justification of Unconditional Basic Income, and in what way can the theoretical concepts be found in empirical experiments of UBI. Bru Laín researched at the Karl Polanyi Institute for Political Economy (Concordia University), the Centre for Applied Philosophy, Politics and Ethics (University of Brighton), and the Chaire Hoover d'éthique économique et sociale (UC Louvain), and works between social policies and political philosophy.

Kurzfassung: This book offers an analysis of the dynamics of the global medical device (medtech) industry from the 1960s until the present, using the approaches of business history and industry studies. While most of the publications in the corresponding field have focused on particular countries/regions or actors, this research is unique in its scope. First, it explores the formation and development of medtech business both globally and in the major countries engaged in this industry (the United States, Japan, Germany, Switzerland, France, and China). Second, it tackles a broad range of actors and organizations, from individual entrepreneurs, medical doctors, and engineers to small family firms, start-ups, and large multinationals, as well as universities and research centers. Hence, for the first time, this book both provides a general understanding of the formation and transformation of the medtech industry throughout the world and sheds light on the main features of a fast-growing business in the twenty-first century. This book will be of value to historians, industry professionals, and analysts.

Kurzfassung: Since the 2008 Global Financial Crisis the prevailing economic development model based on an assumption of unlimited resources and, therefore, unlimited growth has been increasingly put into question by academics, policy-making agencies and even industry leaders themselves. Climate change, general environmental and natural resource degradation, widespread inequalities, and systemic governance failures are pressing capitalism to renew itself to deliver sustainable outcomes for a broader base of stakeholders. This has become known in more practical terms as the ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) and responsible investment movements. The pressure to change how we organise ourselves as societies and economies has implications for how large and small corporations, public or private, are governed and to the benefit of whom. This Handbook offers a rare combination of pluralistic and multidisciplinary perspectives from law, economics, finance and management, as well as an interesting mix of latest academic thinking and practical recommendations on ESG for boards and executive teams. Should companies be governed and managed for the benefit of their shareholders alone? Can companies be governed to deliver for shareholders as well as the broader stakeholder base? How can investors allocate capital to advance sustainability? Part I provides a pluralistic discussion of some of these fundamental questions besetting academics and practitioners alike while Part II examines recent regulatory developments and assesses what may need to change in terms of law and regulation to both hold companies to account for sustainability while enabling them to continue to provide vital goods and services. Part III of the book discusses how the different types of companies and investors are currently facing the sustainability imperative and incorporating ESG factors on how they operate and invest. The concluding chapter provides an overview of the key regulatory, ecosystem and board-level gaps that require urgent and decisive action. Kurzfassung: This book elucidates the murky realities of China's taxation system today, and advocates bold plans for change. Kurzfassung: This two-volume book examines the most important global problem—the recovery of the social-economic crises due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This economic crisis has its own basis and differs from others by the lockdown of most businesses on the decision of authorities. The uncertainty of the future economic revival obliges scientists around the world to unite in search of effective solutions that will become the basis for prosperity and human wellbeing. The death of millions of people around the world, several waves of coronavirus, and a global pandemic have forced most states to seek extraordinary measures to save people and revive economic activity. The world economy experienced a global shock, probably never experienced before due to lockdowns. The disruptions and gaps in the value chains were primarily caused by the lockdowns of enterprises. The change in the essence of the economic crisis has raised the question of how to overcome it and revive economic activity. The crisis caused a sharp decline in incomes of the population around the world, which led to social upheavals. Post-COVID economic revival in a globalized world has become the most important problem of our time. This book offers contributions of authors from different countries and explores problem solving in the fields of public administration (Volume I, Part I), financial services (Volume I, Part II), different branches (Volume II, Part III) and the social sector (Volume II, Part IV). The second volume of the book is devoted problems in sectors of the economy, such as agriculture, tourism, aircraft, the automotive industry, electricity, culture, etc. The second part of the second volume examines trends in the revival in the social sector—medicine, pharmaceuticals, the labor market and social insurance. Despite the fact that the book is divided into two volumes and four parts, a holistic and systematic perception of the new reality of the post-COVID age can be obtained by reading the entire book. This book will be of interest to academics and practitioners in public administration and economics, particularly those who are interested in Post-COVID economic revival. Vladimir S. Osipov is a doctor in Economics and Professor in the Asset Management Department at MGIMO University, Moscow, Russia.

Kurzfassung: The Covid-19 pandemic has revealed the weaknesses of globalisation, exposed the fragility of the current growth model, and accelerated the ongoing tech revolution. The world is increasingly facing the risk of decoupling between growth and employment, of a jobless growth with a disconnect between productivity and wages. This book is an in-depth analysis of these weaknesses and fragilities in the context of sustainability. Economist Marco Magnani suggests the possibility of pursuing a more balanced, environmentally and socially sustainable growth while defusing today’s apocalyptic alarmism about climate change, energy and demographic constraints, and the future of work. He explores alternative growth models —such as circular and civil economy, sharing economy, convivialism, and happy degrowth—and takes cues from them. He investigates the labour market, pinpointing occupations and work tasks at risk but also showcasing new jobs created by technology. He compares proposals such as reducing work hours, providing a job guarantee, mandating a universal basic income, and imposing a robot tax. The book makes innovative policy recommendations, such as the establishment of an endowment capital and the payment of a social dividend, and suggests a shift from re-distribution to pre-distribution policies. This will undoubtedly foster fierce debate. Marco Magnani closely examines artificial intelligence (AI) and big data, augmented reality and Internet of Things, quantum computing and blockchain, and biotechnologies and nano-materials. The reader embarks on a journey to learn about innovation, discover the threats of globalisation and the uncertainties of the labour market, redefine the man-machine relationship, and find a path to sustainable growth. The end goal is improving people’s lives, leveraging robots and machines despite their formidable and unjustifiably frightful rise, to make the global economy work for everyone.

Kurzfassung: This book offers a fresh perspective on the early history of macroeconomics, by examining the macro-dynamic models developed from the late 1920s to the late 1940s, and their treatment of economic instability. It first explores the differences and similarities between the early mathematical business cycle models developed by Ragnar Frisch, Michal Kalecki, Jan Tinbergen and others, which were presented at meetings of the Econometric Society and discussed in private correspondence. By doing so, it demonstrates the diversity of models representing economic phenomena and especially economic crises and instability. Jan Tinbergen emerged as one of the most original and pivotal economists of this period, before becoming a leader of the macro-econometric movement, a role for which he is better known. His emphasis on economic policy was later mirrored in the United States in Paul Samuelson’s early work on business cycles analysis, which, drawing on Alvin Hansen, aimed at interpreting the 1937-1938 recession. The authors then show that the subsequent shift in Samuelson's approach, from the study of business cycle trajectories to the comparison of equilibrium points, provided a response to the econometricians' critique of early Keynesian models. In the early 1940s, Samuelson was able to link together the tools that had been developed by the econometricians and the economic content that was at the heart of the so-called Keynesian revolution. The problem then shifted from business cycle trajectories to the disequilibrium between economic aggregates, and the issues raised by the global stability of full employment equilibrium. This was addressed by Oskar Lange, who presented an analysis of market coordination failures, and Lawrence Klein, Samuelson's first PhD student, who pursued empirical work in this direction. The book highlights the various visions and approaches that were embedded in these macro-dynamic models, and that their originality is of interest to today's model builders as well as to students and anyone interested in how new economic ideas come to be developed.

Kurzfassung: This book offers a lively account of the humanitarian, economic, societal, and planetwide impacts of the pandemics, the COVID-19 pandemic included, which are traced back to as early as the 14th century plague pandemic. Placing the pandemics along with other globally shared resources, such as global warming, AI singularity, and high-risk physics experiments, each of the nine chapters of the book discusses the global health crises from a variety of unique standpoints, including infectious diseases, economics, governance, and public health. Based on the historical records of past pandemics and the rich data from the COVID-19 pandemic, a conceptual framework is presented for the economics of pandemics as a globally shared experience. This book aims to critically examine salient features in the global responses to the COVID-19 pandemic, including global governance, lockdowns, radical movements, and mRNA vaccines. The book will be a valuable resource to students, researchers, and policymakers who are working in the fields of environmental economics, global-scale public goods, and health economics. S. Niggol Seo is a natural resource economist who specializes in the study of global warming and globally shared goods, currently at the Muaebak Institute of Global Warming Studies. He received a Ph.D. degree from Yale University in 2006 with a dissertation on microbehavioural economics of climate change. He has worked on various projects with the World Bank on climate change in Africa, Latin America, and Asia and held Professor positions in the UK, Spain, and Australia from 2006 to 2015.

Kurzfassung: This textbook provides a comprehensive and unique introduction to modern microeconomics. It adopts an integrative approach, positioning the main findings of economics in a broader context. It critically reflects on theories from a philosophical standpoint and compares them to approaches found in the social sciences, while at the same time highlighting the implications for the design of legal systems and business practices. Intended for undergraduate students, the book presents brief examples and comprehensive case studies to help them grasp the real-world implications of the theories. As such, it is suitable for an applied, yet technically precise approach to teaching microeconomics, as well as for a critical review of the economic mainstream. Starting from the question as to why and how societies organize economic activity, it analyzes the potential and limitations of various types of market with regard to alleviating scarcity and achieving distributive objectives, from an institutional perspective. This second edition systematically expands on decision theory by including chapters on traditional decision theory under risk and uncertainty, and on behavioral economics, as well as a chapter presenting findings from the neurosciences, evolutionary psychology, and narrative psychology. Furthermore, there are theoretical additions, along with updated case studies and examples – from trade wars to pandemics and the climate crisis. A new edition of the companion workbook features a wealth of exercises, ranging from basic multiple-choice questions to challenging mathematical problems and case studies, is also available.

Sustainable Finance: The Policy Framework -- 5. Measuring and Reporting Sustainability Impacts -- 6. The Role for Central and Public Banks.
Kurzfassung: This book provides a detailed yet succinct overview of sustainable finance, with a specific focus on its origins, its policy focus and the practitioner dimension. With fossil fuel companies still attracting investment and subsidy across the world, the book describes how we can reverse these incentives, using the power of finance to tackle the climate and ecological crises. The world of finance is moving beyond the era of ethical investment and into a future where all financial companies will have to report the climate impact of their investments. This is the first stage towards full-scale ESG reporting (Environmental, Social and Governance). Since financial reporting depends on information provided by companies who receive investment, this has huge implications for non-financial reporting by all large companies. The timeline for these legal changes is short for what will be a transformation of financial accounting and investment. The book also covers the related issues of climate finance and the role of central and public banks in funding the transition to sustainability, and how we can ensure accountability for countries bearing the brunt of the impact from those with the largest responsibility for historic emissions. This book will enable those working in these fields to update their knowledge and skills, and brings together the author’s practical experience as an MEP with her academic insight as the first professor of green economics. Molly Scott Cato is Professor of Green Economics at Roehampton Business School, UK and was formerly a member of the European Parliament’s Economic and Monetary Policy committee and its rapporteur on sustainable finance. She is a green economist and expert on cooperatives and social enterprise, sustainable finance, monetary policy and tax policy. Molly is the national Green Party speaker on finance and on Brexit.

Kurzfassung: “A brilliant contribution to present-day discussions on Marx’s value theory, money, capital and finance, highlighting the cardinal regulatory role of the financial sphere in capitalism. Achim Szepanski, following Marx’s analyses, takes finance seriously. He shows that ‘financialization’ is not a deviation from some ‘good’ industrial capitalism, or a new, ‘predatory’, method of exploitation (‘exploitation by dispossession’ etc.), a ‘bad’ exploitation as opposed to the ‘good’ exploitation by the ‘productive’ capital, but a historic development expressing the formal determinations innate in the capitalist mode of production.” — John Milios, Author of The Origins of Capitalism as a Social System The book’s central theme is to develop a new theory of speculative capital related to other forms of capital, the world market, and the state. Unlike most Marxist and heterodox theories, the book distinguishes credit and fictitious capital from speculative capital to show its hegemony today in the capital markets. Speculative capital structures and also controls the so-called “real capital.” The method is Marxist while also incorporating material from contemporary Marxist and heterodox authors like John Milios, Robert Meister, Tony Norfeld, Li Puma, Harald Strauß, Michael Heinrich, Suhail Malik, Bichler/Nitzan and Ellie Ayache. Offering a comprehensive study of the logic and mode of existence of capital in the 21st century, the book will be of interest to academics and students of monetary and financial economics alongside political economy. Achim Szepanski is the founder of the Electronic Music Labels Force Inc., and Mille Plateaux. His research focuses on speculative capital. His recent publications are Capitalisation 1 & 2, Non-Marxism, Capital and Power in the 21st Century, Imperialism, State-Fascism and the War Machines of Capital, and Ultrabablack of Music. He is the Editor of the online magazine NON.

Kurzfassung: In Blockchain and Web3, two tech and finance experts deliver a comprehensive and accessible guide to the present and future of blockchain technology and how it will form the foundation of a new, better internet. To support a concept as bold as the Metaverse, we need several orders of magnitude more powerful computing capability, accessible at much lower latencies, across a multitude of devices and screens. You'll discover how blockchain can accelerate data flow, exchange, and transactions to create and transfer value around the world and, at the same time, how it can be used to protect user data privacy and security with decentralized web infrastructures. The book also includes: discussions of how sovereign governments are entering the blockchain fray and how their entry, especially with CBDC digital currency, shapes the conversations around Web3; explorations of whether we will ever realize the holy grail of blockchain tech: interoperability to compete with Big Tech platforms; and a discussion of new security and privacy issues rising from the intersection of Blockchain, Web3, and Metaverse. A fascinating and eye-opening treatment of the past, present, and future of blockchain and the role it will play on the internet and metaverse, Blockchain and Web3 is a truly original and engaging discussion of a timely and critical topic.

Kurzfassung: China's rapid socio-economic development has achieved remarkable equalizing conditions between men and women in the aspects of health, education and labor force participation, but the glass ceiling phenomenon has become more prominent. The book develops a cross-disciplinary paradigm, with economics at its core, to better understand gender in China and women in management in the Chinese business context. The theoretical perspective integrates the knowledge and evidence from cognate disciplinary strands, such as economics, sociology, management studies, and the Chinese literature, into one unified framework. In-depth interviews with managers in China's largest enterprises complement the theoretical perspective with rich empirical details to examine women's managerial experiences and career choices. The book's argument sheds light on the power of stereotypes that specify women's roles in the family, organization, and society. It shows that understanding the socio-psychological and organizational dynamics of stereotyping in the Chinese context, as well as how Chinese women make career decisions, recognizing and deploying these expectations, provides new perspectives on the underrepresentation of women among business leaders in China. The book offers multi-disciplinary evidence on the economics of gender in China that is highly relevant for gender studies in general, and across a number of subject areas, and it can be used in any setting as an introductory reference

Kurzfassung: The global nature of Cervantes Global´s work is evident in the worldwide distribution of its readers, in the variety of methodologies from which it is studied and in the depth of the texts, which are attractive in any cultural context. Cervantes Global illustrates the heterogeneous and dialectical nature of Cervantism with contributions from various countries: Germany, Argentina, Canada, South Korea, Spain, United States, France, Israel, Italy and Switzerland. The volume brings together different but complementary approaches and methodologies that allow establishing a dialogue between different notions and critical categories, as well as promoting a self-reflective and self-critical attitude within Cervantism. The volume contains works on the reception of Don Quixote, but also studies on its female figures, on the equestrian theme, on the canon of Cervantine kings, or on the ideal of the Christian knight. Likewise, it presents studies on other Cervantine works (Exemplary Novels, Persiles), providing a global vision of it

Kurzfassung: This open access book considers the development of the sharing and collaborative economy with a European focus, mapping across economic sectors, and country-specific case studies. It looks at the roles the sharing economy plays in sharing and redistribution of goods and services across the population in order to maximise their functionality, monetary exchange, and other aspects important to societies. It also looks at the place of the sharing economy among various policies and how the contexts of public policies, legislation, digital platforms, and other infrastructure interrelate with the development and function of the sharing economy. The book will help in understanding the future (sharing) economy models as well as to contribute in solving questions of better access to resources and sustainable innovation in the context of degrowth and growing inequalities within and between societies. It will also provide a useful source for solutions to the big challenges of our times such as climate change, the loss of biodiversity, and recently the coronavirus disease pandemic (COVID-19). This book will be of interest to academics and students in economics and business, organisational studies, sociology, media and communication and computer science

This formed the foundation for both the indigenous population and their "discoverers," for deported slaves and for procured coolies. This lecture volume traces this process in detail, which still continues to this day

Kurzfassung: Klappentext (engl.): This volume presents an analysis of the relationship between violence and affection in Latin American culture. From an interdisciplinary perspective, the contributions that comprise it address a wide spectrum of cultural productions, including literature, film, photography, installations, and performances. The volume offers an overview of the trajectory and impact of the affective turn in the region, questioning the specificity that affective theory acquires in Latin America, while exploring the mutations of the concept of violence in the contemporary panorama. The political potential of 'ugly' affects, the affective effectiveness of works of art to mobilize the viewer, the exploration of uncomfortable affective positions or affect as a deterritorialized form in contemporary cinema are some of the intersections between affections and violence that the book investigates.

Kurzfassung: This volume collects works by Hispanists from different origins: from researchers whose mother tongue is Spanish and who carry out their work in the Hispanic world, whether peninsular or American, to those who work in regions where Spanish is a minority language and/or or who have acquired Spanish as a second language. This joyous diversity finds its expression in the works that make up this volume, highlighting one of the central objectives of the AIH: the academic and plural dialogue between the Hispanicisms of the world, an enriching and vivifying dialogue that knows no borders. Doing so for the first time outside of Europe and America takes on a very special significance, by inserting this multiplicity of perspectives into the present and much-needed dialogue between our peoples and regions. The printed book exclusively includes the opening speeches and plenary presentations, which were given by Myrna Solotorevsky, Patrizia Botta, Angela Schrott, Juan Diego Vila, Manuel Rivero Rodríguez and James Valender. Kurzfassung: PR und Organisationskommunikation müssen zunehmend wicked problems, also verzwickte Probleme, lösen.
