    Abstract: Wie ist die Stimmung? Nicht so gut. Von Zuversicht kann keine Rede sein. Wir fühlen uns bedroht, wollen das Erreichte sichern. Wer weiß, was die Zukunft bringt? Für Heinz Bude sind Stimmungen die Gefühle der Gesellschaft. Er analysiert, wie sie entstehen, wie sie beeinflusst werden können, aber auch, wie sie kippen können. Stimmungen entscheiden darüber, wie wir die Welt wahrnehmen, deshalb ist es Politikern so wichtig, die Stimmung der Wähler zu kennen. Heinz Bude zeigt, warum Stimmungen in der Politik oft mehr entscheiden als Argumente. Stimmungen sind vage, flüchtig und unberechenbar. Aber wer verstehen will, wie unsere Demokratie funktioniert, muss von ihrer Macht über die Menschen wissen. „Die «universelle Stimmung der Selbstmotivierung, Selbstüberprüfung und Selbstverwirklichung», so Bude, scheine nur zwei Möglichkeiten zuzulassen: «die Akzeleration oder die Kontemplation, die Selbstüberbietung oder die Selbstversenkung, die Intensivierung der Tendenz oder den Exodus aus dem System». Doch setzt der teilnahmsvolle Beobachter auf eine dritte Verhaltensmöglichkeit, die sich der vermeintlichen Alternative nicht beuge. Er hört – so wird man sagen dürfen – das Gras wachsen und glaubt eine aufkeimende Stimmung erspüren zu können. Die dereinst in dieser Stimmung sein werden, nennt Bude, nicht ganz unfeierlich, «die Zukünftigen». Es sollen dies solche sein, die – «verhalten und scheu» – einen «anderen Anfang» suchen. Das tönt nicht nur nach Heidegger, sondern ist des Philosophen zweideutiger Beschwörung eines geschichtlichen Ereignisses entnommen, das alles, alles wenden soll. Ganz so gefährlich mutet Budes Übersetzung Heideggers freilich nicht an, dafür aber ähnlich vage. Das Lebensgefühl der Zukünftigen, so der Schlusspunkt, werde von «Weltoffenheit ohne Selbstverneinung» bestimmt sein“ (NZZ)

    Abstract: Future Imperfect critically examines the role played by cultural institutions in producing present-day and future contexts for the production, dissemination, and reception of contemporary art in the Middle East and North Africa.     Abstract: Development is based on communication through language. With more than two thousand languages being used in Africa, language becomes a highly relevant factor in all sectors of political, social, cultural and economic life. This important sociolinguistic dimension hitherto remains underrated and under-researched in 'Western' mainstream development studies. The book discusses the resourcefulness of languages, both local and global, in view of the ongoing transformation of African societies as much as for economic development. From a novel 'applied African sociolinguistics' perspective it analyses the continuing effects of linguistic imperialism on postcolonial African societies, in particular regarding the educational sector, through imposed hegemonic languages such as Arabic and the ex-colonial languages of European provenance. It offers a broad interdisciplinary scientific approach to the linguistic dimensions of sociocultural modernisation and economic development in Africa, written for both the non-linguistically trained reader as much as for the linguistically trained researcher and language practitioner

    Abstract: "The political revolutions which established state socialism in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe were accompanied by revolutions in the word, as the communist project implied not only remaking the world but also renaming it. As new institutions, social roles, rituals and behaviours emerged, so did language practices that designated, articulated and performed these phenomena. This book examines the use of communist language in the Stalinist and post-Stalinist periods. It goes beyond characterising this linguistic variety as crude 'newspeak,' showing how official language was much more complex...the medium through which important political-ideological messages were elaborated, transmitted and also contested, revealing contradictions, discursive cleavages and performative variations. The book examines the subject comparatively across a range of East European countries besides the Soviet Union, and draws on perspectives from a range of scholarly disciplines...sociolinguistics, anthropology, literary and cultural studies, historiography, and translation studies"..

    Abstract: From the sports trend of parkour, via the Old Testament, up to the Berlin squatting scene - the different contributions to this volume take up the challenge of rethinking questions about the entanglement of space and gender. Predominant interpretations of current societal phenomena as well as established research topics are examined in order to trace gendered power structures. Thus, resistant moves/tricks (Maschen) and powerful games/acts (Muster) are found in a wide range of topics reaching from observations of performative acts and discourse structures all the way to medial treatments.     Abstract: Der emeritierte Cambridge-Professor beschäftigt sich nach seinem Werk über Wissenssysteme und -vermittlung (vgl. ID 30/01) nun damit, wie wir Wissen - in Vergangenheit und Gegenwart - sammeln, aufbereiten, bewerten und auch anwenden, teilen oder auch verlieren. Konzentrierte er sich damals eher auf die Zeit von Gutenberg bis zur Aufklärung, legt er den Fokus nun auf den Zeitraum von Diderot bis heute. Die präsentierte Analyse unserer Wissensgesellschaft zeigt auf der einen Seite die Professionalisierung und Demokratisierung des Wissensgewinns, auf der anderen Seite aber auch die unüberschaubare Anhäufung und Zerstörung von Informationen. Burke beweist in seiner Reise durch die Jahrhunderte, dass die Lenker der Wissensproduktion nicht erst seit Edward Snowden Staaten und Geheimdienste waren und dass die Wissensvermehrung auch schon vor Google von Privatunternehmen vorangetrieben wurde. Eine Haupterkenntnis bleibt, dass Wissen noch nie so rasend schnell wie heute vernichtet wurde. Wieder verständlich und anschaulich geschrieben, dürfte das Buch erneut nur eher einen kleinen Leserkreis ansprechen. (3) (Rouven Hans)

    Abstract: In den bisherigen Forschungen zu »muslimischen« Denkerinnen und Denkern sind die dichotomisch verwendeten Begriffe »Moderne« und »Islam« zentral. Dabei wird »Moderne« meist mit »westlich«, »säkular«, »reformerisch« und neuerdings »global« gleichgesetzt - und »Islam« mit »orientalisch«, »religiös«, »traditionell« und »partikular«.Abbas Poya nimmt einen Wechsel der »Erzählperspektive« vor. Anhand von vier gegenwärtig wichtigen iranischen Autoren - Al-e Ahmad, Shari'ati, Sorush und Malekyan - untersucht er den Transformationsprozess in den heutigen islamisch-intellektuellen Diskursen im Lichte global vorherrschender postkolonialer Zustände und zeigt, dass ihre Gedankengänge durch die sogenannten islamischen/orientalischen Ideen ebenso geformt sind wie durch die vermeintlich säkularen/westlichen Vorstellungen
    Abstract: In previous research on »Muslim« thinkers and philosophers, the dichotomously applied terms »modern« and »Islam« are central. Therein, »modern« is mostly equated with »Western«, »secular«, »reformist«, and, most recently, »global«, whereas »Islam« is equated with »oriental«, »religious«, »traditional«, and »particular«.Abbas Poya breaks from the »narrative perspective«: On the basis of four current and important Iranian writers - Al-e Ahmad, Shari'ati, Sorush, and Malekyan - he examines the transformation process in today's Islamic intellectual discourses in the light of global dominant post-colonial conditions and shows that the thought processes are shaped by so-called Islamic/oriental ideas as well as by supposed secular/western ideas

Since the eighteenth century in Europe, intellectuals and artists have gathered in cafes to exchange ideas, inspirations and information that has driven the cultural agenda for Europe and the world. Without the café, would there have been a Karl Marx or a Jean-Paul Sartre? The café as an institutional site has been the subject of renewed interest amongst scholars in the past decade, and its role in the development of art, ideas and culture has been explored in some detail. However, few have investigated the ways in which cafes create a cultural and intellectual space which brings together multiple influences and intellectual practices and shapes the urban settings of which they are a part. This volume brings together an international group of scholars who consider cafes as sites of intellectual discourse from across Europe during the long modern period. Drawing on literary theory, history, cultural studies and urban studies, the contributors explore the ways in which cafes have functioned and evolved at crucial moments in the histories of important cities and countries - notably Paris, Vienna and Italy. Choosing these sites allows readers to understand both the local particularities of each café while also seeing the larger cultural connections between these places. By revealing how the café operated as a unique cultural context within the urban setting, this volume demonstrates how space and ideas are connected.
