Charm Offensive explores how this elevation of French femininity created problems on both sides of the equation: the pressure on French women to conform to an exacting physical standard was immense, while the inability of anyone else to access that standard resulted in a sense of failure. Zugleich war das Ende der Anstalten keine einfache Erfolgsgeschichte, brachte die Deinstitutionalisierung neue Formen der Einschränkung mit sich.

    Kurzfassung: El libro presenta once trabajos sobre un debate historiográfico, el estudio de cómo se construyeron y asimilaron las diferencias humanas y culturales. Aunque concede una atención especial a América hasta el siglo XIX, integra otros espacios relacionados con la España colonial como Filipinas o Marruecos. La percepción del otro, comenzando por quién designa y es designado como otro, no es un tema nuevo en la historiografía, pero sigue vigente por su capacidad de integrar las visiones de dominadores y dominados, por su metodología interdisciplinar (representada en el libro por la colaboración de historiadores, historiadores del arte o antropólogos) y por la naturaleza universal de algunas de sus conclusiones, las cuales permiten relacionarlo con el presente. En resumen, una propuesta amplia e integradora que interroga al pasado sobre un tema definitorio del ser humano y que, por eso, nunca deja de ser actual. Quizás, si comprendemos los fenómenos de identidad y alteridad como construcciones culturales, podamos favorecer la formación de sociedades más respetuosas y pacíficas

    Kurzfassung: "This book identifies and examine the changing roles of Nigerian women: in the family, educational attainment and society as experienced and expressed by a sample of educated, Nigerian women. Five of the participants were children caught in Biafran (Nigerian) war and their education was interrupted during the war. All struggle to gain education as girls and women growing up in Nigeria in families with sometimes limited resources. The book is based on the assumption that changes are taking place at all levels of Nigerian society, and that these changes are reflected in the way Nigerian women think and express views about themselves and their extended families. Nine Nigerian women resident in Egypt, were interviewed in depth using the 'topical life history' method to reveal their attitudes and perceptions concerning the woman's role in the family. In lengthy, free form, non-directive interviews, the participants recount their life histories from small children to the present day, and in this process comment and reveal their feelings about personal, family and social issues. Based on a literature review some eight hypotheses are identified and examined concerning these issues and the participants' views about them. The response data are grouped under the hypotheses and analyzed. Conclusions suggest changing role patterns of women as expressed by these women from lower- and middle-class families, concerning education male and female children, bearing progeny, polygamy, earning income to provide for the family, marriage, male domination and influences and pressures from the extended family"--

    Kurzfassung: Jeannette Windheusers Studie zur Bedeutung von Geschlecht in der Heimerziehung verschiebt gewohnte erkenntnistheoretische und methodologische Voraussetzungen: Zunächst von einer qualitativen Fotografiebefragung ausgehend werden eine an sozialwissenschaftlicher und psychologischer Empirie orientierte Erziehungswissenschaft und eine gendertheoretische Geschlechterforschung selbst zu Objekten der Forschung. Mit Bezug auf Luce Irigaray, Jacques Derrida und Heide Schlüpmann wird ein differenztheoretischer, feministisch-genealogischer und ästhetischer Perspektivwechsel vorgenommen, der die Geschlechtlichkeit nicht nur des Gegenstandes Heimerziehung, sondern auch von Theorie und Empirie hervortreten lässt.

    Kurzfassung: La querella de las mujeres is the name by which the ignoble debate that has taken place in Europe over several centuries, in which the dignity of women and their intellectual and political capacity is questioned. La Querella publicly manifested itself in gatherings and generated an enormous number of writings around the value, the difference and the relations between both sexes. Women and men belonging to the most influential circles of the time, cultural and political, participated in various ways. Spain had a significant participation in the debate and shows that it is the European projection that some of the Spanish works of the moment reached. Here we investigate the presence and development of the Querella in the Iberian peninsula in the fifteenth century, through a detailed study of treaties in defense of women. Works that arise mainly in court environments with the clear intention to respond, to oppose, the misogynistic arguments that circulated in the context of the controversy.

    Kurzfassung: "The Dominican Racial Imaginary subverts the way of knowledge of Dominican elites by telling the stories of 'the forced delivered child.' This child (a blend of Africans, Tainos, and Spanish) fled to the mountains escaping the abuses of the colonizer and became an adult in maroon communities. This book takes a look at history as a space of interrogation. When and how did Africa become part of the Dominican racial mix? In renewing the past, rather than the imposed Indo-Hispanic racial homogenization narrative, we might see something more...the historical creation of a multiracial rainbow. The stories the child/adult tell about the slave traffic, anti-colonial movements, the division of the island, more anti-colonial revolutions, abolition, and renewal of colonial oppressions. These stories also tell about cultural constructions unique to the island and the formation of a subversive racial imaginary. Battles against the continuity of white supremacist values people cultural practices, and ways of knowing attest to this subverted imaginary. In telling the stories of women dancing under the spell of the snake, of youngsters in New York City wearing dreadlocks, of Dominican intellectuals and politicians searching for their true identity, of people creating cooperation at the Haitian-Dominican border, this book strongly argues that there is a nation of Dominicans battling against the continuity of white supremacist values"...Provided by publisher

    Kurzfassung: Erst nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg gelang eine äußerst dichte Zusammenarbeit Frankreichs und Deutschlands in allen Bereichen des gesellschaftlichen, politischen und wirtschaftlichen Lebens und eine "Aussöhnung" der beiden Länder. Wie kam dies zustande und welche Faktoren trugen dazu bei? Welche Besonderheiten kennzeichnen das "deutsch-französische Modell"? Lassen sich tatsächlich allgemeine Empfehlungen aus diesem Modell ableiten, um die Beziehungen ehemals verfeindeter Staaten konfliktfrei zu gestalten? Der Sammelband richtet in ausgewählten Beiträgen seinen Blick zunächst auf den historischen Kontext der deutsch-französischen Beziehungen, auf ihre Ausgangsbedingungen, Entwicklung und momentane Lage. Einen großen Teil des Bandes nehmen Beiträge zu einzelnen Fallstudien der deutsch-französischen Zusammenarbeit ein, z. B. das Deutsch-Französische Jugendwerk, Hochschulkooperationen, Städtepartnerschaften oder auch Beamtenaustauschprogramme der Außenministerien. Der dritte Teil schließlich widmet sich der Entwicklung der deutsch-tschechischen Beziehungen seit 1989 und wagt damit einen ersten Versuch der Übertragbarkeit des deutsch-französischen Modells.
