    Abstract: How Hip Hop Became Hit Pop examines the programming practices at commercial radio stations in the 1980s and early 1990s to uncover how the radio industry facilitated hip hop’s introduction into the musical mainstream. Constructed primarily by the Top 40 radio format, the musical mainstream featured mostly white artists for mostly white audiences. With the introduction of hip hop to these programs, the radio industry was fundamentally altered, as stations struggled to incorporate the genre’s diverse audience.     Abstract: This book brings together a range of hip hop scholars, artists and activists working on Hip Hop in the Global North and South with the goal of advancing Hiphopographic research as a critical methodology with critical fieldwork methods that can provide a critical perspective of our world. The authors’ focus in this volume is to present an anthology of essays that expand the remit of Hiphopography as an approach to the study of Hip Hop that is not only sensitive to the social, economic, political and cultural lives of Hip Hop Culture participants as interpreters and theorists, but one that continues to humanize the “whole person” behind the decks, on the mic, rocking on the linoleum floor, painting in front of a wall, and seeking that Knowledge of Self. This book will be relevant to Hip Hop scholars in fields such as cultural studies and history, sociolinguistics, linguistic anthropology and ethnography, and race studies, while Hip Hop heads themselves will find parts of this book that represent their culture in ethical and informative ways. Jaspal Naveel Singh is a hip hop head, knowledge producer and soul searcher. He currently works as a Lectuer in Applied Linguistics and English Language at the Open University, UK. His first monograph Transcultural Voices: Narrating Hip Hop Culture in Complex Delhi (2022) develops a hiphopographic approach called global hip hop linguistics to study breakers, graffiti artists, musicians and rappers in the emergent scenes in urban India. Originally from Germany, he has lived and worked in India, Hong Kong and Wales. Quentin Williams is Director of the Centre for Multilingualism and Diversities Research and an Associate Professor of Sociolinguistics in the Linguistics Department at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa. His most recent books are Struggles for Multilingualism and Linguistic Citizenship with Tommaso Milani and Ana Deumert (2022) and Neva Again: Hip Hop Art, Activism and Education in post-apartheid South Africa with Adam Haupt, H Samy Alim and Emile YX?     Abstract: The Original Portrayal of Mozart’s Don Giovanni offers an original reading of Mozart’s and Da Ponte’s opera Don Giovanni, using as a lens the portrayal of the title role by its creator, the baritone Luigi Bassi (1766–1825). Although Bassi was coached in the role by the composer himself, his portrayal has never been studied in depth before, and this book presents a large number of new sources (first- and second-hand accounts), which allows us to reconstruct his performance scene by scene. The book confronts Bassi’s portrayal with a study of the opera’s early German reception and performance history, demonstrating how Don Giovanni as we know it today was not only created by Mozart, Da Ponte and Luigi Bassi but also by the early German adapters, translators, critics and performers who turned the title character into the arrogant and violent villain we still encounter in most of today’s stage productions.     Abstract: Music, as the form of art whose name derives from ancient myths, is often thought of as pure symbolic expression and associated with transcendence. Music is also a universal phenomenon and thus a profound marker of humanity. These features make music a sphere of activity where sacred and popular qualities intersect and amalgamate. In an era characterised by postsecular and postcolonial processes of religious change, re-enchantment and alternative spiritualities, the intersections of the popular and the sacred in music have become increasingly multifarious. In the book, the cultural dynamics at stake are approached by stressing the extended and multiple dimensions of the sacred and the popular, hence challenging conventional, taken-for-granted and rigid conceptualisations of both popular music and sacred music. At issue are the cultural politics of labelling music as either popular or sacred, and the disciplinary and theoretical implications of such labelling. Instead of focussing on specific genres of popular music or types of religious music, consideration centres on interrogating musical situations where a distinction between the popular and the sacred is misleading, futile and even impossible. The topic is discussed in relation to a diversity of belief systems and different repertoires of music, including classical, folk and jazz, by considering such themes as origin myths, autonomy, ingenuity and stardom, authenticity, moral ambiguity, subcultural sensibilities and political ideologies

    Abstract: As the art that calls most attention to temporality, music provides us with profound insight into the nature of time, and time equally offers us one of the richest lenses through which to interrogate musical practice and thought. In this volume, musical time, arrayed across a spectrum of genres and performance/compositional contexts is explored from a multiplicity of perspectives. The contributions to the volume all register the centrality of time to our understanding of music and music-making and offer perspectives on time in music, particularly though not exclusively attending to contemporary forms of musical work. In sharing insights drawn from philosophy, music theory, ethnomusicology, psychology of performance and cultural studies, the book articulates a range of understandings on the metrics, politics and socialities woven into musical time.

Darüber hinaus schuf Schütz mit seinen Historienkompositionen (Auferstehung, Weihnachten) und seinen drei Passionen gewichtige Beiträge zur Geschichte des Oratoriums. Zu seinen weltlichen Werken gehören neben einer frühen Sammlung italienischer Madrigale mehrere theatralische Stücke, die leider alle verloren sind.

    Abstract: Questions of authorship are central to the late thirteenth-century motet repertoire represented by the seventh section or fascicle of the Montpellier Codex (Montpellier, Bibliothèque interuniversitaire, Section de médecine, H. 196, hereafter Mo). Mo does not explicitly attribute any of its compositions, but theoretical sources name Petrus de Cruce as the composer of the two motets that open fascicle 7, and three later motets in this fascicle are elsewhere ascribed to Adam de la Halle. This monograph reveals a musical and textual quotation of Adam’s Aucun se sont loe incipit at the outset of Petrus’s Aucun ont trouve triplum, and it explores various invocations of Adam and Petrus – their works and techniques – within further anonymous compositions. Authorship is additionally considered from the perspective of two new types of motets especially prevalent in fascicle 7: motets that name musicians, as well as those based on vernacular song or instrumental melodies, some of which are identified by the names of their creators. This book offers new insights into the musical, poetic, and curatorial reception of thirteenth-century composers’ works in their own time. It uncovers, beneath the surface of an anonymous motet book, unsuspected interactions between authors and traces of compositional identities

    Abstract: »This video is not available in your country.« With this sentence, the video platform YouTube fueled many years of dispute with the German collecting society GEMA. Numerous online discussions focused on the appropriate remuneration for music streaming – GEMA bashing followed. Music and copyright have always been a contentious issue. Digitization set in motion a process that changed the way music and other creative goods are produced, consumed, distributed and exploited. This break undermined previous business models of the music industry and shook basic assumptions in the understanding of copyright. Philip Stade focuses on the particular online discourse YouTube vs. GEMA and, in the spirit of cultural studies, opens up interdisciplinary and historical perspectives on the fields of music business, copyright and capitalism in the digital transformation. The focus is on hegemonic strategies and the central role of social media. Even though the social and economic upheavals of the digital transformation are far from complete, Stade precisely elaborates which overarching shifts are taking place in the relationship between exclusive control and free access. For we are only just beginning to understand how digital capitalism works
    Abstract: »Dieses Video ist in deinem Land leider nicht verfügbar.« Mit diesem Satz befeuerte die Video-Plattform YouTube die jahrelange Auseinandersetzung mit der deutschen Verwertungsgesellschaft GEMA. In zahlreichen Online-Diskussionen ging es um die angemessene Vergütung für das Musikstreaming - das GEMA-Bashing folgte. Musik und Urheberrecht waren und sind ein konfliktreiches Thema. Mit der Digitalisierung setzte ein Prozess ein, der die Art veränderte, Musik und andere kreative Güter zu produzieren, zu konsumieren, zu verbreiten und zu verwerten. Diese Zäsur untergrub bisherige Geschäftsmodelle der Musikwirtschaft und erschütterte Grundannahmen im Urheberrechtsverständnis. Philip Stade richtet den Blick auf den besonderen Online-Diskurs YouTube vs. GEMA und eröffnet im Sinne der Cultural Studies interdisziplinäre und historische Sichtweisen auf die Felder Musikwirtschaft, Urheberrecht und Kapitalismus im digitalen Wandel. Im Fokus stehen dabei hegemoniale Strategien sowie die zentrale Rolle Sozialer Medien. Auch wenn die gesellschaftlichen und ökonomischen Umwälzungen des digitalen Wandels längst nicht abgeschlossen sind, arbeitet Stade präzise heraus, welche übergeordneten Verschiebungen im Verhältnis von exklusiver Kontrolle und freiem Zugang stattfinden.     Abstract: In 1933, John A. Lomax and his son Alan set out as emissaries for the Library of Congress to record the folksong of the “American Negro” in several southern African American prisons. Listening to the Lomax Archive: The Sonic Rhetorics of African American Folksong in the 1930s asks how the Lomaxes’ field recordings—including their prison recordings and a long-form oral history of jazz musician Jelly Roll Morton—contributed to a new mythology of Americana for a nation in the midst of financial, social, and identity crises. Stone argues that folksongs communicate complex historical experiences in a seemingly simple package, and can thus be a key element—a sonic rhetoric—for interpreting the ebb and flow of cultural ideals within contemporary historical moments. He contends that the Lomaxes, aware of the power of folk music, used the folksongs they collected to increase national understanding of and agency for the subjects of their recordings even as they used the recordings to advance their own careers. Listening to the Lomax Archive gives readers the opportunity to listen in on these seemingly contradictory dualities, demonstrating that they are crucial to the ways that we remember and write about the subjects of the Lomaxes’ archive and other repositories of historicized sound. Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington and other well-known jazz musicians were sent around the world – including to an array of Communist countries – as "jazz ambassadors" in order to mitigate the negative image associated with domestic racial problems. While many non-Americans embraced the Americanism behind this jazz diplomacy without question, others criticized American domestic and foreign policies while still appreciating jazz – thus jazz, despite its popularity, also became a medium for expressing anti-Americanism. This book examines the development of jazz outside America, including across diverse historical periods and geographies – shedding light on the effectiveness of jazz as an instrument of state power within a global political context.

Iran's particular system of traditional Persian art music has been long treated as the product of an ever-evolving, ancient Persian culture. In Music of a Thousand Years, Ann E. Lucas argues that this music is a modern phenomenon indelibly tied to changing notions of Iran's national history.     Abstract: In The Race of Sound Nina Sun Eidsheim traces the ways in which sonic attributes that might seem natural, such as the voice and its qualities, are socially produced. Eidsheim illustrates how listeners measure race through sound and locate racial subjectivities in vocal timbre—the color or tone of a voice. Eidsheim examines singers Marian Anderson, Billie Holiday, and Jimmy Scott as well as the vocal synthesis technology Vocaloid to show how listeners carry a series of assumptions about the nature of the voice and to whom it belongs. Outlining how the voice is linked to ideas of racial essentialism and authenticity, Eidsheim untangles the relationship between race, gender, vocal technique, and timbre while addressing an undertheorized space of racial and ethnic performance. In so doing, she advances our knowledge of the cultural-historical formation of the timbral politics of difference and the ways that comprehending voice remains central to understanding human experience, all the while advocating for a form of listening that would allow us to hear singers in a self-reflexive, denaturalized way.

    Abstract: Frauke Heß widmet sich der Betrachtung eines Schulfachs mit stark femininem Image. Sie zeigt, dass das "Mädchenfach" Musik viele adoleszente Jungen mit dem Problem konfrontiert, dass ein Engagement im Musikunterricht in Widerspruch zu ihren Männlichkeitsvorstellungen steht. Auf Grundlage einer quantitativen Fragebogenstudie zur Schülerperspektive auf den Musikunterricht der Mittelstufe legt die Autorin im ersten Teil eine Bestandsaufnahme vor, die empirisch gesicherte Daten zum Renommee sowie zur aktuellen Ausrichtung des Faches gibt. In einer Anschlussstudie wird der soziologische Geschlechter-Diskurs durch Unterrichtsforschung konkretisiert. Erkenntnisleitend ist die Frage, wie Lehrende Jugendlichen ausreichend Spielraum für ihre individuellen Interessen und Bedürfnisse bieten können, ohne bestehende Geschlechterverhältnisse zu zementieren.

    Abstract: Zur sozialen Ungleichheit des Musikhörens -- Neue Rahmenbedingungen im Web 2.0 -- Aktuelle empirische Befunde zum Musikhören in Österreich -- Wozu Musik? Zentrale Tendenzen und mögliche Konsequenzen.
    Abstract: In Anschluss an aktuelle Erkenntnisse soziologischer und sozialpsychologischer Musikrezeptionsforschung erläutert der Band, welche gesellschaftlichen Funktionen das Musikhören heute erfüllt, und welche Rolle hier die neuen Rahmenbedingungen im Web 2.0 spielen. Auf Basis repräsentativer empirischer Erhebungen werden musikalische Einstellungen und Verhaltensweisen illustriert sowie klar abgrenzbare Musikhörtypen charakterisiert, die in je besonderer Weise mit den aktuellen Möglichkeiten und Herausforderungen der digitalen Mediamorphose umgehen. Besondere Berücksichtigung findet dabei die Frage nach der Bedeutung primärer Sozialisation als Gegengewicht zur musikalischen Selbstsozialisation im Internet. Vor allem Alter, Schulbildung und Wohnortsgröße der Menschen zeigen sich als entscheidende Einflussgrößen der individuellen musikalischen Praxis in Österreich. Starting from how this question is commonly answered by the practice of interpretation in Western notated art music, this book proposes a move beyond commonly accepted codes, conventions and territories of music performance. Appropriating reflections from post-structural philosophy, visual arts and semiotics, and crucially based upon an artistic research project with a strong creative and practical component, it proposes a new approach to music performance. The approach is based on divergence, on the difference produced by intensifying the chasm between the symbolic aspect of music notation and the irreducible materiality of performance.     Abstract: This handbook takes on the task of examining the history of music listening over the past two hundred years. It uses the "art of listening" as a leitmotif encompassing an entanglement of interdependent practices and discourses about a learnable mode of perception. The art of listening first emerged around 1800 and was adopted and adapted across the public realm to suit a wide range of collective listening situations from popular to serious art forms up to the present day. Because this is a relatively new subject in historical research, the volume combines case studies from several disciplines in order to investigate whether, how, and why practices of music listening changed. Focusing on a diverse set of locations and actors and using a range of historical sources, it attempts to historicize and reconstruct the evolution of listening styles to show the wealth of variants in listening.

The pervasive nature of stardom in modern society demands study from the perspectives of a range of distinct but thematically connected disciplines. The exploration of intersections between broader considerations of stardom and the discourses of popular music studies is the genesis for this volume. The chapters collected here demonstrate the variety of work currently being undertaken in stardom studies by scholars in Australia. The contributions range from biographical considerations of the stars of popular music, contributions to critical discourses of stardom in the industry more broadly, and the various ways in which the use of astronomical metaphors, in both cultural commentary and academic discourse, demonstrate notions of stardom firmly embedded in popular music thought. Not only do these chapters represent a range of perspectives on popular music, stars and stardom, they provide eloquent and innovative contributions to the developing discourse on stardom in popular music."

    Abstract: From the 1920s on, popular music in Southeast Asia was a mass-audience phenomenon that drew new connections between indigenous musical styles and contemporary genres from elsewhere to create new, hybrid forms. This book presents a cultural history of modern Southeast Asia from the vantage point of popular music, considering not just singers and musicians but their fans as well, showing how the music was intrinsically bound up with modern life and the societal changes that came with it. Reaching new audiences across national borders, popular music of the period helped push social change, and at times served as a medium for expressions of social or political discontent.

    Abstract: Everyday articulations of music, place, urban politics, and inclusion/exclusion are powerfully present in Istanbul. This volume analyzes landscapes of music, community, and exclusion across a century and a half. An interdisciplinary group of scholars and artists presents four case studies: the rembetika, the music of the Asiks, the Zakir/Alevi tradition, and hip-hop, in Beyoglu, Üsküdar, the gentrifying Sulukule neighborhood, and across the metropolis. Alex Papadopoulos is Associate Professor of Geography at DePaul University, Chicago. He studies the contestation of urban space in European cities. Asli Duru is Marie Curie Fellow at The Open University, London, and studies everyday geographies of health and wellbeing.

    Abstract: »Durchaus rhapsodisch« - so beginnt eine Fragment gebliebene Sonate für Cello allein des jungen Theodor Wiesengrund; eine Vortragsanweisung, die ebenso auch das Formprinzip des später unter dem Namen Adorno weithin bekannt gewordenen Philosophen umreißen könnte. In diesem Band geht es um den eher fremd gebliebenen Musiker und Komponisten. Von Adornos zunächst künstlerischen Ambitionen ausgehend beleuchtet der Band eine wesentliche Dimension von Adornos musikalischem Denken, indem er sein kompositorisches Schaffen in den Blick rückt: die Liederzyklen und die Werke für Streicher, die Klavierstücke und Orchesterwerke. Hierbei stellt der Band ebenso die enge Verknüpfung von Theorie und Praxis in Adornos Denken heraus wie den künstlerischen Eigensinn seiner Musik, die nicht Exempel seiner Philosophie ist.     Abstract: Addressing a wide range of improvised art and music forms—from jazz and cinema to dance and literature—this volume's contributors locate improvisation as a key site of mediation between the social and the aesthetic. As a catalyst for social experiment and political practice, improvisation aids in the creation, contestation, and codification of social realities and identities. Among other topics, the contributors discuss the social aesthetics of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, the Feminist Improvising Group, and contemporary Malian music, as well as the virtual sociality of interactive computer music, the significance of "uncreative" improvisation, responses to French New Wave cinema, and the work of figures ranging from bell hooks and Billy Strayhorn to Kenneth Goldsmith.

    Abstract: From the 1920s on, popular music in Southeast Asia was a mass-audience phenomenon that drew new connections between indigenous musical styles and contemporary genres from elsewhere to create new, hybrid forms. This book presents a cultural history of modern Southeast Asia from the vantage point of popular music, considering not just singers and musicians but their fans as well, showing how the music was intrinsically bound up with modern life and the societal changes that came with it. Reaching new audiences across national borders, popular music of the period helped push social change, and at times served as a medium for expressions of social or political discontent.
