    Abstract: Soigner les pauvres, telle est la vocation de milliers de jeunes femmes qui, tout au long du XIXe siècle, prennent le voile en France et concrétisent ainsi un désir de vie religieuse et de service. Cet engagement ouvre aux femmes des voies pour s'affirmer hors de la famille, dans l'espace public et le monde du travail. Infirmières ou pharmaciennes, responsables de services d'hôpitaux et d'hospices, ou gardes malades à domicile, ce sont les "bonnes" soeurs du XIXe siècle. Figures de la charité, elles sont aussi les chevilles ouvrières du système public de santé dont elles accompagnent la médicalisation. Dans une société confrontée à une nouvelle pauvreté massive et alors que l'Église catholique s'inquiète de la déchristianisation populaire, les soeurs soignantes répondent aux attentes sociales et sanitaires, religieuses et morales de leur temps. La laïcisation républicaine signe-t-elle leur disparition ? Rien n'est moins sûr à en regarder leur présence dans Paris au début du XXe siècle. S'appuyant sur de nombreuses archives des couvents et des institutions hospitalières, cette enquête questionne la vocation des soeurs soignantes dans leur quotidien auprès des pauvres de la capitale. Elle propose une histoire du care qui éclaire les enjeux profanes et spirituels de la relation de soin."

    Abstract: Première recherche d'envergure conduite sur les migrants catholiques, ce livre, qui s'appuie sur des enquêtes réalisées auprès de personnes originaires de sociétés africaines, créoles, asiatiques et latino-américaines, expolre de nombreuses thématiques : la place de la religion dans la démarche d'ancrage social des populations migrantes, le rôle de l'appartenance à la religion majoritaire dans leur intégration, et la façon dont ces populations contribuent à la reconfiguration du catholicisme local. Alors que l'appartenance religieuse des migrants tend à être perçue par une part de l'opinion publique comme un obstacle à leur intégration, alimentant la peur d'une perte d'identité française, l'ouvrage montre les difficultés auxquelles sont confrontés les migrants catholiques, qui assument pourtant le même héritage religieux que les français. Mettant en évidence la diversité au sein de la religion catholique, ce livre apporte enfin un éclairage nouveau sur la thématique de la pluralité culturelle au sein des institutions religieuses

    Abstract: Das Werk behandelt das Tragen eines Kopftuchs durch Lehrerinnen und Schülerinnen in der öffentlichen Verwaltung und in der Justiz. Eingehend behandelt werden die Interpretation des muslimischen Kopftuchs (Symbol der Unterdrückung von Frauen und des politischen Islam?) und das Neutralitätsgebot aus verfassungsrechtlicher und sozialwissenschaftlicher Sicht. Untersucht wird die Entwicklung des laizistischen Modells in Frankreich und der Versuch einer Übertragung dieses Modells auf Deutschland (Berliner Neutralitätsgesetz, Verbot des Kopftuchs von Schülerinnen). Auch das neue Bundesgesetz zum Erscheinungsbild von Beamtinnen und Beamten wird untersucht und auf die Notwendigkeit einer Neujustierung des überkommenen Neutralitätsverständnisses hingewiesen.
    Abstract: The work deals with the wearing of a headscarf by female teachers and students, in public administration and in the judiciary. The interpretation of the Muslim headscarf (symbol of the oppression of women and political Islam?) and the neutrality requirement from a constitutional and sociological perspective are dealt with in depth. The development of the laicist model in France and the attempt to transfer this model to Germany (Berlin neutrality law, ban on the headscarves for schoolgirls) are examined. The new federal law on the appearance of civil servants is also dealt with, as well as the need for a readjustment of the traditional understanding of neutrality.

    Abstract: This comparative and multi-level study of state responses is confronted with huge complexity. Almost all existing theoretical and methodological approaches -such as secularism (including multiple secularisms or post-secularism)- do not take these complexities seriously into account, focusing on one concept only (wrong Leitdifferenz). They neglect different meanings of terms for agents in the field and they neglect the importance of different levels of governance, times, issues and minorities. This study, however, highlights minimally necessary complexity without drowning in this complexity. It draws clear conceptual, theoretical and methodological lessons, also in a broader sense for the study of governance of religious and cultural diversity and for the governance of migrations. Van den Breemer’s fascinating study of the religious governance of cemeteries by secular state institutions proves that cemeteries have become a privileged site to observe empirically the various ways in which the dual accommodation of religious-secular and multi-religious diversity takes place in today’s post-secular Western European societies.     Abstract: "Two hundred years after his death, Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) continues to resonate as a fascinating, ambivalent, and polarizing figure. Differences of opinion as to whether Bonaparte should be viewed as the executor of the principles of the French Revolution or as the figure who was principally responsible for their corruption are as pronounced today as they were at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Contributing to what had been an uneasy German relationship with the French Revolution, the rise of Bonaparte was accompanied by a pattern of Franco-German hostilities that inspired both enthusiastic support and outraged dissent in the German-speaking states. The fourteen essays that comprise Inspiration Bonaparte examine the mythologization of Napoleon in German literature of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and explore the significant impact of Napoleonic occupation on a broad range of fields including philosophy, painting, politics, the sciences, education, and film. As the contributions from leading scholars emphasize, the contradictory attitudes toward Bonaparte held by so many prominent German thinkers are a reflection of his enduring status as a figure through whom the trauma of shattered late-Enlightenment expectations of sociopolitical progress and evolving concepts of identity politics is mediated. Almost all existing theoretical and methodological approaches -such as secularism (including multiple secularisms or post-secularism)- do not take these complexities seriously into account, focusing on one concept only (wrong Leitdifferenz). They neglect different meanings of terms for agents in the field and they neglect the importance of different levels of governance, times, issues and minorities. This study, however, highlights minimally necessary complexity without drowning in this complexity. It draws clear conceptual, theoretical and methodological lessons, also in a broader sense for the study of governance of religious and cultural diversity and for the governance of migrations. Van den Breemer’s fascinating study of the religious governance of cemeteries by secular state institutions proves that cemeteries have become a privileged site to observe empirically the various ways in which the dual accommodation of religious-secular and multi-religious diversity takes place in today’s post-secular Western European societies. Others return seriously wounded or psychologically destroyed. Others still are in jail, a breeding ground for broader radicalization. And some have come back to continue to carry out jihad in Europe. In utmost secrecy, David Thomson gathered their testimonies and recounts them in this remarkable and revealing book. With ISIS losing ground on all fronts, the steady flow of jihadists returning to Europe represents one of the greatest challenges facing countries across the continent. This nuanced analysis of the social, religious, political, familial and psychological factors that push people to violent extremism is more necessary now than ever.     Abstract: "This book tackles a question central to the literature on secularism and religion and offers a comparison that critically reflects on the binaries of radical versus moderate religion, and rigid versus moderate secularism. Turkey is the longtime critical case of whether (and how) secularism can travel to a Muslim majority country. France is the critical case in Europe whose history has constituted many of the political ideals of western modernity and has set an example for many countries. There is a strong claim in the literature that Turkey is one of those countries following the French model; therefore, an in-depth comparison of these cases can address the general question of how secularism travels that is central to multiple modernities debates. The relevant IR literature has predominantly argued that secularism in Turkey has followed French laïcité and that both Turkey and France struggle between rigid forms of secularism and challenges of diversity. Akan's objective is to resolve this deadlock and explore the possibility of a shared political field which can account for trajectories of secularism across the boundaries of Europe" --

    Abstract: Ausgehend von den anhaltenden Debatten um das islamische Kopftuch in staatlichen Bildungseinrichtungen Deutschlands und Frankreichs analysiert Schirin Amir-Moazami die Logiken der Diskursproduktion über den Islam und bringt die Argumente der Kritiker mit den Stimmen Kopftuch tragender junger Musliminnen ins Gespräch.Die Studie zeichnet nach, wie die wachsende Partizipation sichtbarer Muslime, hier symbolisiert durch das Kopftuch, im dominanten Diskurs beider Länder Abwehrreaktionen provoziert und der Islam mehrheitlich als Gegenkategorie zu jeweils national geprägten Säkularitätskonzepten begriffen wird. Zugleich zeigt sie, wie die jungen Frauen in die Diskurstraditionen beider Länder eingebettet sind und sich in komplexen Aushandlungsprozessen engagieren

    Abstract: Employing a theoretical framework based on the concept of identity loss, this book seeks to understand why increased integration has stimulated greater radicalization among the Muslim populations in Western Europe. Through extensive field research in four European countries - the UK, the Netherlands, Germany and France - the authors investigate three key questions: 1) Why are 2nd and 3rd generations of Muslims in Europe more radical than their parents?; 2) Why does Europe experience more "home-grown terrorism" today than thirty or forty years ago?; 3) Why do some European countries feature more radical Muslim communities than others? The book reveals that these three puzzling questions can be solved when analyzing the loss of individuality if the face of integration and identification with European society. While Individualist and structural approaches fail to explain radicalization of Muslims in Europe, this study, by framing radicalization through coupling the public discourse with identity loss, provides a much needed insight into the process of radicalization. Explaining radicalization and gaining an understanding of the drivers of radicalization is crucial to prevent and mitigate intercultural alienation, to further develop immigration policies, redress integration failures as well as to avoid dangerous oversimplifications. This book contributes not only to understanding why greater integration is matched by increasing radicalization, but its insights also contribute to developing ideas about how radicalization can be prevented or overcome and integration policies can be enhanced. This book will be of much interest to students of terrorism and counter-terrorism, radical Islam, war and conflict studies, European politics, IR and security studies.

    Abstract: Am 7.1.2015 starb der Autor beim Überfall auf die Redaktion von "Charlie Hebdo", deren Chefredakteur er war; das Manuskript zu diesem Buch war 2 Tage zuvor fertig geworden. Was verbirgt sich hinter dem - einem deutschen Publikum womöglich nicht unmittelbar einleuchtenden - Titel? Charb attackiert den Begriff der "Islamophobie", dessen "Charlie" nach der Veröffentlichung von Mohammed-Karikaturen und anderen sarkastischen Zeichnungen bezichtigt wurde. Aber, so Charb, die Angst vor jedweder Religion mag begründet oder dumm sein, sie ist jedoch kein Vergehen, genauso wie die Gotteslästerung nur für den Gläubigen ein Tabubruch ist, nicht aber für den Atheisten. Die unglückselige Allianz der Anti-Islamophoben reiche von den "notorischen Gegnern" des "Charlie" bis zu denen, denen Religiösitat wichtiger sei als Religionskritik, und denen, die aus liberalen und linken Motiven für ein Miteinander der Religionen eintreten: anscheinend ganz neue, beängstigende Bündnisse. Kern der Auseinandersetzung, so das scharfsinnige Vermächtnis, sei aber nicht die Religionszugehörigkeit, sondern eher der alltägliche Rassismus! (Harald Pilzer)

    Abstract: Über Kopftuch und Burka werden in Deutschland wie in Frankreich seit Jahren heftige Debatten geführt. Auslöser waren hierfür in Deutschland Entscheidungen des Bundesverfassungsgerichts aus den Jahren 2003 und 2015. In Frankreich erregen zwei Gesetze die Gemüter: das Kopftuchverbot für Schülerinnen 2004; ein generelles Verbot, mit einem Gesichtsschleier in der Öffentlichkeit aufzutreten, 2010. Nachdem der Europäische Gerichtshof für Menschenrechte dieses Verbot nicht beanstandet hatte, wurde auch in Deutschland ein Burka-Verbot gefordert. Die Kontroverse um Kopftuch und Burka stellt aber nur ein Symptom dahinter liegender Probleme dar: Wieviel Homogenität ist für ein friedliches Zusammenleben in einer multireligiösen Gesellschaft erforderlich? Auf wieviel Toleranz ist sie angewiesen? Aber auch, wo sind deren Grenzen? Die Antworten werden auch bestimmt durch das Verständnis des Verhältnisses von Staat und Religion, das Ausmaß an Laizität. Deren Konzepte in Frankreich und Deutschland nähern sich gerade angesichts der Verbreitung des Islam in beiden Ländern ungeachtet unterschiedlicher historischer Ausgangspunkte an.     Abstract: "Over the past few years, secularism has become an intrinsic component of discussions on religious freedom and religious governance. The question of whether states should restrict the wearing of headscarves and other religious symbols has been particularly critical in guiding this thought process. Refashioning Secularisms in France and Turkey documents how, in both countries, devout women have contested bans on headscarves, pointing to how these are inconsistent with the 'real' spirit of secularism. These activists argue that it is possible to be simultaneously secular and religious; to believe in the values conveyed by secularism, while still remaining devoted to their faith. Through this examination, the book highlights how activists locate their claims within the frame of secularism, while at the same time revisiting it to craft a space for their religiosity. Addressing the lacuna in literature on the discourse of devout Muslims affected by these restrictions, this book offers a topical analysis on an understudied dimension of secularism and is a valuable resource for students and researchers with an interest in Religion, Gender Studies, Human Rights and Political Science.     Abstract: "This book offers a comparative analysis of religious education and state policies towards religious education in seven different countries and in the European Union as a whole. Most of the cases studied have not been presented previously in the English speaking world. The comparative contextualization of the different countries studied here, Muslim majority, Orthodox Christian, Jewish and secular (or laic) is also new. The challenge addressed by the book's different studies, is quite simply if religious education can itself be a vehicle for civic enculturation and the creation of ties of belonging and meaningful solidarity across different ethnic and religious communities in the contemporary world. In many of the countries studied, the state and the program of state-making was associated with one religio-ethnic community and then the question remains if religious education that privileges that religious community can provide such shared terms of meaning for members of different communities. This is the challenge faced by such countries at Bulgaria, Israel, Malaysia and in a slightly different way (facing not religious diversity but ethnic difference), Turkey. The case of Cyprus, by contrast, is one of a country actually split along lines of ethno-religious difference. Additional studies of the connection between religious education and the terms of citizenship in the EU, France and the USA provide important contrasts to the challenges facing us as we seek to educate our citizenry in an age of religious resurgence and global politics"--

    Abstract: Immer weniger Franzosen lernen Deutsch und auch in Deutschland werden dem Französischen immer häufiger andere Sprachen vorgezogen. Der Grund ist meistens gleich: Sprachen wie Spanisch gelten als einfacher, als weltweit bedeutender oder, schon allein des Landes und der Leute wegen, als attraktiver. Matthias Lahr-Kurten untersucht auf Basis von mehr als 70 Experteninterviews und umfangreicher Literatur, welche Bedeutung der jeweils anderen Landessprache beigemessen wird, welche Maßnahmen zur Förderung ergriffen werden und welche Probleme sich dabei ergeben. Abgesehen von gegenseitigen Vorurteilen, die durch die Weltkriege geprägt wurden, steht der Unterricht beider Sprachen im Ruf, zu sehr auf Grammatik und deshalb zu wenig auf Kommunikation ausgerichtet zu sein. Trotz starker Initiativen im Bereich der Sprachförderung - etwa durch das Institut Français und die Goethe-Institute, durch Austauschprogramme und privates Engagement - nehmen die Schülerzahlen ab. Viele Experten sind sich sicher, dass vor allem persönliche Begegnungen zum Weiterlernen animieren. Zusätzlich wird für die Entscheidung zur Partnersprache Deutsch oder Französisch geworben, nicht nur von Lehrern, deren Kurse sonst oft nicht zustande kommen, sondern sogar im Fernsehen. Durch die Freude am Medium erzielt etwa der Fernsehsender ARTE ein spielerisches Lernen, erreicht allerdings nur Menschen, die sich ohnehin für beide Sprachen oder den europäischen Kontext interessieren. Matthias Lahr-Kurten schlägt beispielsweise eine langfristige Imagekampagne vor. Diese soll die negativen Deutschland- und Frankreichbilder abbauen, Vorteile am Erlernen der Sprache aufzeigen und möglichst in den öffentlich-rechtlichen Sendern eingesetzt werden. Schließlich überträgt sich Interesse nicht, sondern muss bei jeder Generation und jeder Person neu geweckt werden. (ifa)

    Description / Table of Contents: Immigration has become a contentious issue in Europe in recent decades, with immigrants being accused of resisting integration and threatening the secular fabric of nationhood. The most extreme form of this unease has invented and demonized an Islamic 'other' within Europe. This book poses central questions about this global staging of difference. How has such anxiety increased exponentially since 9/11? Why has the Muslim veil been singled out as a metaphor in debates about citizenship? Lastly, and most fundamentally, who sets the criteria for constructing the ideal citizen? This study explores the issue of gender and immigration in the national contexts of Germany and France, where the largest minority populations are from Turkey and North Africa, respectively. The author analyzes fictional works by the Turkish-German writers Emine Sevgi Özdamar and Zafer Şenocak and by Francophone writer Malika Mokeddem. All three deconstruct binary oppositions and envision an alternate third space that allows them to break out of the confines of organized religion. In the latter part of the book, the voices of young Muslim women are foregrounded through interviews. The concluding chapter on the pedagogical tool Deliberative Dialogue suggests ways to navigate such contentious issues in the Humanities classroom
