    Abstract: Über Religion wird seit jeher und offenbar unermüdlich gestritten. Auch in Deutschland geben aktuell religiöse Symbole im öffentlichen Raum, Missbrauchsskandale in den christlichen Kirchen und auch religiöser Fundamentalismus Anlass für leidenschaftlich geführte Debatten über den angemessenen Umgang mit Religion in liberalen Demokratien. Das gesetzliche Fundament dieses Umgangs bildet in Deutschland das Religionsverfassungsrecht, das vor über 100 Jahren in der Weimarer Reichsverfassung erstmals festgeschrieben wurde und seit Gründung der Bundesrepublik Deutschland im Jahr 1949 auch Bestandteil des Grundgesetzes ist. Es verankert die Religionsfreiheit und definiert das Verhältnis zwischen Staat und Religionsgemeinschaften.

    Abstract: This volume analyzes the development of the reactions to Covid-19 by governments, the public and the crime patterns in 16 European countries. All countries are members of the European Union and share common European norms and values, but the Covid-19 pandemic can serve as an example of how these norms and values are interpreted differently with regard to people’s trust in public institutions, governmental control strategies, dealing with fear, anxiety and other emotional responses to the new virus, crime patterns and law enforcement priorities to prevent and combat them. The volume provides empirical data based on available statistics, media analysis and qualitative data from interviews and observations, and examines the similarities and differences in crime patterns and the consequences for local communities and law enforcement priorities. .

    Abstract: Welche Bedeutung hat die Staatsbürgerschaft für Schwarze Deutsche? Emmanuel Ndahayo liefert mit seiner Studie einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Erforschung sozialer Ungleichheit und gesellschaftlicher Teilhabe im Kontext von Migration und Eingliederungsprozessen, die in besonderem Maße von Rassismus, (post-)kolonialistischen Ansichten und fragilen Inklusionsformen betroffen sind. Die Analyse der sozialen Lage von eingebürgerten Deutschen afrikanischer Herkunft schließt eine Forschungslücke. Die empirische Untersuchung mit Hilfe qualitativer Interviews bietet daher wichtige Erkenntnisse nicht nur für die Sozialwissenschaft, sondern auch für Praktiker*innen in der Integrationspolitik.

    Abstract: Religiöses Recht ist immer wieder in Diskussion: Jüdisches Recht bei der Beschneidung, islamisches Recht beim Schächten und katholisches Kirchenrecht bei der Bistums-Finanzverwaltung. Die Säkularisierung trennte Staat und Religion in der Weise, dass für das Recht der Staat zuständig ist. Können, sollen Religionsgemeinschaften trotzdem ihr eigenes internes Recht haben? Die Autorinnen und Autoren gehen dieser Frage aus unterschiedlichen geographischen und religiösen Richtungen nach und verbinden die theologischen und religiös-rechtlichen Binnenperspektiven mit religionshistorischen, philosophischen, sozialanthropologischen und weltlich-rechtlichen Außenperspektiven. Religionsfreiheit erweist sich dabei als Verbindungsglied, aber auch als Filterinstanz zwischen beiden Bereichen. So zeigt sich, dass die Begründung religiösen Rechts womöglich gerade in einem sich fortentwickelnden Verständnis von Säkularisierung liegt.

    Abstract: Die britische Mathematikenthusiastin ("Mathematik der Liebe"), Professorin in London, schreibt über das Wirken von Algorithmen in den Daseinsdimensionen "Macht, Daten, Justiz, Medizin, Autos, Kriminalität, Kunst." Die Algorithmen entscheiden für uns oder bereiten Entscheidungen vor, doch sie sind indiskret, fehlerbehaftet (wie menschliches Handeln), ungerecht und gaukeln eine Sicherheit vor, die sie nur bedingt geben können. Die Autorin referiert die z.T. bekannten Beispiele. Vieles grenze, vor allem in der sogenannten KI, die sie lieber eine erweiterte Computerstatistik nennen wolle, an "Zauberei", vor allem dann, wenn nicht mehr erklärt werden könne, wie die Ergebnisse zustande kämen. Die Kernfrage bleibe also, wie sehr wir den Algorithmen trauen und sie als Autorität in unserem/über unser Leben anerkennen. Man muss nicht zum Cyborg werden, aber ein vernünftiges und rationales Miteinander von menschlichen und algorithmisierten Verfahren sei ein anstrebenswertes Ziel. Sehr gut zu lesen, gut neben z.B. K. Mainzer, C. O'Neil, M. Tegmark

    Abstract: An enduring theme of Western philosophy is that we are all one another's equals. Yet the principle of basic equality is woefully under-explored in modern moral and political philosophy. In a major new work, Jeremy Waldron attempts to remedy that shortfall with a subtle and multifaceted account of the basis for the West's commitment to human equality. What does it mean to say we are all one another's equals? Is this supposed to distinguish humans from other animals? What is human equality based on? Is it a religious idea, or a matter of human rights? Is there some essential feature that all human beings have in common? Waldron argues that there is no single characteristic that serves as the basis of equality. He says the case for moral equality rests on four capacities that all humans have the potential to possess in some degree: reason, autonomy, moral agency, and ability to love. But how should we regard the differences that people display on these various dimensions? And what are we to say about those who suffer from profound disability--people whose claim to humanity seems to outstrip any particular capacities they have along these lines? Waldron, who has worked on the nature of equality for many years, confronts these questions and others fully and unflinchingly. Based on the Gifford Lectures he delivered at the University of Edinburgh in 2015, One Another's Equals takes Waldron's thinking further and deeper than ever before.--

    Abstract: The market for print steadily expanded throughout the eighteenth-century Atlantic world thanks to printers' efforts  to ensure that ordinary people knew how to read and use printed matter. Reading is and was a collection of practices, performed in diverse, but always very specific ways. These practices were spread down the social hierarchy through printed guides. Eve Tavor Bannet explores guides to six manners or methods of reading, each with its own social, economic, commercial, intellectual and pedagogical functions, and each promoting a variety of fragmentary and discontinuous reading practices.     Abstract: "Concern about the 'decline of community', and the theme of 'community spirit', are internationally widespread in the modern world. The English past has featured many representations of declining community, expressed by those who lamented its loss in quite different periods and in diverse genres. This book analyses how community spirit and the passing of community have been described in the past...whether for good or ill...with an eye to modern issues, such as the so-called 'loneliness epidemic' or the social consequences of alternative structures of community. It does this through examination of authors such as Thomas Hardy, James Wentworth Day, Adrian Bell and H.E. Bates, by appraising detective fiction writers, analysing parish magazines, considering the letter writing of the parish poor in the 18th and 19th centuries, and through the depictions of realist landscape painters such as George Morland. K.D.M. Snell addresses modern social concerns, showing how many current preoccupations had earlier precedents. In presenting past representations of declining communities, and the way these affected individuals of very different political persuasions, the book draws out lessons and examples from the past about what community has meant hitherto, setting into context modern predicaments and judgements about 'spirits of community' today"...

    Abstract: This is a study of what ethical principles and practices people around the world hold in common and what institutions best allow virtue to flourish. It is based on a Carnegie Council project on comparative ethics that Michael Ignatieff has run for the past three years. Most works of comparative ethics look at formal systems of belief. What, for example, do Christian and Confucian texts say about the role of the family? What do the Koran or John Rawls say about treatment of the poor? This is, by contrast, a work of "lived ethics." Ignatieff took a team of researchers around the world to examine what values and ethical beliefs guide diverse people in practice. They went to places where people are living under unusual stresses or where contemporary social challenges are particularly clear. They went to Brazil, for example, to discuss life where corruption is a serious problem, to Sarajevo to talk about reconciliation, to Queens in New York to talk about diversity, and to Fukushima, Japan, to talk about disaster and recovery. Overall, they found more commonality than they were expecting, that whatever formal systems of belief prevail, people tend to orient themselves in similar ways around the values of trust, tolerance, forgiveness, reconciliation, and resilience. But where people are suffering they often doubt that others share their ethical beliefs and begin to circle the wagons to defend their own group. We shouldn't expect citizens to be heroes. So what institutions and political arrangements encourage or inhibit virtue? Overall, Ignatieff says, liberal constitutionalism seems most effective, but only as long as poverty and inequality are not allowed to get out of hand.--

    Abstract: An account of all the new and surprising evidence now available for the beginnings of the earliest civilizations that contradict the standard narrative. Why did humans abandon hunting and gathering for sedentary communities dependent on livestock and cereal grains, and governed by precursors of today's states? Most people believe that plant and animal domestication allowed humans, finally, to settle down and form agricultural villages, towns, and states, which made possible civilization, law, public order, and a presumably secure way of living. But archaeological and historical evidence challenges this narrative. The first agrarian states, says James C. Scott, were born of accumulations of domestications: first fire, then plants, livestock, subjects of the state, captives, and finally women in the patriarchal family-all of which can be viewed as a way of gaining control over reproduction. Scott explores why we avoided sedentism and plow agriculture, the advantages of mobile subsistence, the unforeseeable disease epidemics arising from crowding plants, animals, and grain, and why all early states are based on millets and cereal grains and unfree labor.
