    Abstract: This book explores and addresses body search practices in prison environments from different angles (criminology, sociology, human rights and law) and discusses such practices in different national contexts within Europe. Body searches are widely used in prison systems across the globe: they are perceived as indispensable to prevent forbidden substances, weapons or communication devices from entering the prison. However, these are also invasive and potentially degrading control techniques. It should not come as a surprise, then, that body searches are deeply contested security measures and that they have been widely debated and regulated. What makes theses control measures problematic in a prison context? How do these practices come to be regulated in an international and European context? How are rules translated into national law? To what extent are laws and rules respected, bent, circumvented and denied? And what does the future hold for body searches? Tom Daems is Professor of Criminology at the Leuven Institute of Criminology (LINC), KU Leuven, Belgium. At LINC, he coordinates the research line on ‘Punishment and Control’. Daems has published widely on punishment and prisons, in particular from a European perspective. With Palgrave, he previously published Electronic Monitoring: Tagging Offenders in a Culture of Surveillance (2020) and Europe in Prisons: Assessing the Impact of European Institutions on National Prison Systems (2017, co-edited with Luc Robert). .

    Abstract: This book ties restorative justice into the exercise of patriarchal power. It is focused on the individual narratives of 15 girls and young women who have participated in a victim-offender restorative justice (RJ) conference and the perspectives of youth justice practitioners. Gender, Power and Restorative Justice expands feminist engagement with RJ by focusing critical attention on the importance of the social construction of gender, the exercise of power, shame, stigma, muting and resistance to girls’ experiences of RJ conferencing. Drawing upon recent developments to the sociology of stigma and feminist perspectives on shame, the book contends that RJ conferencing can produce harmful implications for girls and young women who participate. Ultimately it is argued that anti-carceral, social policy alternatives, underpinned by feminist praxis, should replace a youth justice jurisprudence for girls. This book will be of particular use and interest to those studying modules on criminology, youth justice, criminal justice and social work courses. Jodie Hodgson is a lecturer in Criminology at Manchester Metropolitan University, UK. Jodie has previously worked as a lecturer at Leeds Beckett University and the University of Liverpool. She completed her PhD at Liverpool John Moores University. Her research interests are situated within the areas of youth justice, feminism and critical criminology.

    Abstract: Der Konferenzband diskutiert aus interdisziplinären Perspektiven das Kopftuch im Kontext von Verbotsdebatten im deutschsprachigen Raum und möglichen Konsequenzen für das gesellschaftliche Miteinander. Der Mehrwert dieser Publikation ergibt sich aus der Auseinandersetzung mit dem sonst populistisch und politisch ausgeschlachteten Thema des muslimischen Kopftuches und bietet anstelle dessen eine differenzierte und vor allem differenzierende Elaboration sowohl für die im Feld stehenden Lehrenden als auch für die interessierte Allgemeinheit.     Abstract: How do memory and remembrance relate to the specific mode of transitional justice that lays emphasis on restoration? What is captured and what is obliterated in individual and collective efforts to come to terms with a violent past? Across this volume consisting of twelve in-depth contributions, the politics of memory in various countries are related to restorative justice under four headings: restoring trust, restoring truth, restoring land and restoring law. While the primary focus is a philosophical one, authors also engage in incisive analyses of historical, political and/or legal developments in their chosen countries. Examples of these include South Africa, Colombia, Rwanda, Israel and the land of Palestine, which they know all too well on a personal basis and from daily experience. On 10 December 2020, the book was officially launched with a webinar which brought together the editors of the book and prof. Stephan Parmentier (KU Leuven) and prof.     Abstract: Die Beiträge dieses aus einer interdisziplinären Tagung hervorgegangenen Bandes widmen sich aktuellen Fragen, die sich in den kulturwissenschaftlichen Debatten um die Human-Animal Studies derzeit stellen. Sie berühren nicht allein die philosophischen, ethischen, rechtlichen, politischen und sozialen Aspekte der Beziehungen zwischen Menschen und Tieren, sondern auch die methodischen Herausforderungen und theoretischen Grundlagen ihrer Erforschung. Im Zentrum steht dabei die Frage, ob und inwieweit sich die anthropozentrisch geprägte Denkstruktur der Kulturwissenschaften um Perspektiven und Forschungsansätze erweitern lässt, die Tieren sowie ihren Rechten, Bedürfnissen und Interessen stärker gerecht werden. Indem die Human-Animal Studies den Blick für die enge Verflochtenheit menschlicher und tierlicher Existenzweisen öffnen, schaffen sie wichtige Voraussetzungen dafür, unser bisheriges Verhältnis zu ihnen grundsätzlich zu überdenken und zugleich praktisch zu verändern.

    Abstract: "This book draws attention to the various factors that characterise migrant flows and mobilities, calling into question familiar concepts such as push and pull, migration as a life project and socio-cultural integration. It highlights processes such as flexible migrant routes, temporary and return migration, mental aspects of migration processes and transnationalism. Organised around the themes of shaping trajectories, frictions in space, and the migrant mental framework, - it brings together work from scholars from Europe and beyond. The book suggests a different understanding of migration and mobility as relational, non-linear, and fluid social processes, characterised by instability in migrant life trajectories. Emphasising the flexibility of migrants and migration and advocating the importance of emotionally charged, individual perceptions as central to migrant decision-making, it will appeal to scholars of sociology, anthropology, politics and geography with interests in migration and diaspora studies. The contributions collected here put emphasis the social and mental processes that underpin the migratory process, which can be seen as the "soft-side" of migration. Too often, this side is neglected when the governance of migration is discussed. The novel ideas expressed here also help to overcome the mechanistic view of migration as a 'push-pull' event"...

    Abstract: Who is a child’s legal mother? Must a child have exactly one mother, can it have two or three, or can it have two fathers, but no mother? Or has the concept of motherhood become obsolete and should we just talk of parenthood in a gender neutral way? Questions such as these would have appeared esoteric only a few decades ago, but as a result of new social developments (such as frequent family reconstitutions, gay and lesbian emancipation or surrogacy) and of technological innovations (such as egg and embryo donations) they have become issues in a vehement debate. The interdisciplinary contributions to this book focus on the legal definition of motherhood, on the way in which legal conceptions structure the social discourse on motherhood (and vice versa), and on the influence of legal rules on power relations between mothers, fathers, children and the state. Among the issues addressed are - the challenges to our understanding of the legal regulation of motherhood by developments in reproductive medicine; - the challenges to our understanding of the legal regulation of motherhood by parental constellations deviating from the mother-father-model (single motherhood by choice, same-gender parenthood, multiple parenthood); - the exercise of parental rights in case of parental separation and the impact of legal rules on the bargaining positions of mothers and fathers.

    Abstract: Junge und minderjährige Geflüchtete sind spätestens seit 2015 eine nicht mehr aus der Kinder- und Jugendhilfe wegzudenkende Zielgruppe. Im Fokus der Veranstaltung stand deshalb drei Jahre "nach dem Ankommen" die Perspektivplanung in der Arbeit mit jungen Flüchtlingen - dies im Hinblick auf die Hilfeplanung insgesamt, mögliche Hilfeformen auch nach dem 18. Lebensjahr sowie die Zukunftsperspektiven und die Verselbstständigung der jungen Geflüchteten. Ein Schwerpunkt der Veranstaltung lag auf der Frage nach dem Ist-Stand und den Perspektiven der kommunalen Integration junger Geflüchteter in der Praxis. Welches sind in diesem Zusammenhang die dringendsten Aufgaben? Und welche Herausforderungen sind damit fachlich, infrastrukturell und personell für die Kinder- und Jugendhilfe verbunden?

Darin untersuchen SozialwissenschaftlerInnen, wem in deutschen Großstädten Raum gegeben wird, sich frei zu entfalten, und wer in vernachlässigte Stadtviertel abgedrängt wird.     Abstract: Mit dem Anstieg der Lebenserwartung in Europa geht ein Wandel der Erwerbs- und Lebensverläufe einher, die durch Brüche und Wechsel der beruflichen Tätigkeiten geprägt sind. Ein zentrales Anliegen ist daher, jedem die Teilhabe am Erwerbsleben über den gesamten Lebensverlauf zu ermöglichen und zugleich soziale Rechte durch angemessenen sozialen Schutz zu gewährleisten. Mit juristischen, sozialpolitischen und empirischen Analysen widmet sich dieses Buch dem Zusammenspiel verschiedener Sozialschutzmechanismen und ihren Schwierigkeiten, sich den neuen Entwicklungen anzupassen. Es präsentiert die Impulse europäischer Instanzen und die Antworten verschiedener europäischer Staaten auf die Herausforderung, Flexibilisierung der Beschäftigung und Modernisierung der Sozialschutzsysteme in Einklang zu bringen. Increasing life expectancy in Europe entails a remodelling of career development and life course, marked by discontinuities and changing professional activities. One of the concerns is ensuring that everybody may participate in gainful activities during his or her life course while also guaranteeing social rights through adequate social protection. By means of legal, socio-political and empirical analyses this book embarks on the interrelationship of different social protection mechanisms and the resulting difficulties of adapting to these new employment patterns. It presents European impulses and the reactions of several European states to the challenge of reconciling flexibility of employment and modernisation of social protection. L’augmentation de l’espérance de vie en Europe suscite un changement des modes de parcours professionnels et de vie constitués de ruptures et de conversions d’activité. L’une des préoccupations est de permettre à chacun de poursuivre une activité professionnelle tout au long de sa vie tout en pouvant bénéficier d’une protection sociale adaptée. A travers des analyses juridiques, socio-politiques et empiriques, cet ouvrage aborde les interférences et les difficultés d’adaptation des mécanismes de protection sociale aux nouvelles évolutions. Il présente les impulsions européennes et les choix effectués au niveau national pour concilier flexibilité de l’emploi et modernisation des systèmes de protection sociale

    Abstract: Das Thema Asyl ist in den Medien allgegenwärtig. Seit die Flüchtlingszahlen 2015 dramatisch gestiegen sind, stehen einerseits Forderungen nach einer Aufnahmebegrenzung und andererseits die Position, dass es keine Obergrenze beim Recht auf eine individuelle Prüfung des Asylanspruchs geben könne, im politischen Raum gegeneinander. Dabei besteht in der Öffentlichkeit wenig Klarheit darüber, wozu eigentlich das Grundgesetz und dessen Artikel 16a, die Genfer Flüchtlingskonvention und europäische Regelungen die Bundesrepublik verpflichten. Auch bezüglich des tatsächlichen Zusammenhangs zwischen Asylrecht und Zuwanderung besteht Informationsbedarf. Diesen Fragen gehen die Beitragsautorinnen und -autoren in diesem Sammelband nach. Die hierbei gewonnenen Erkenntnisse und Ergebnisse reflektieren das Themenfeld Asyl aus juristischer, politikwissenschaftlicher und praktischer Perspektive. Quelle: Verlag.

    Abstract: "There has been an undisputed increase in the importance of migration over the past decades. It is one of the effects of an increasingly globalized world, where capitalism and free trade are gaining prominence. Migration in East and Southeast Asia aims to bring migration-related problems in Asia to the forefront. The first part of the book deals with migration in Greater China, a region influenced by Confucianism. The "three Chinas" used to have a close connection in the past, and presently share much similarity. The Hong Kongese and Taiwanese societies are based on migration from Mainland China. However, each society has endured significant social, economic, and political changes. The second part of the book offers a closer look at migration flows in Southeast Asia. Most of the intra-ASEAN migration involves low-skilled labor for construction, agriculture, and domestic work"--

    Abstract: Migration war immer ein wichtiger Aspekt der Geschichte der europäischen Integration. Die bestehende Literatur hat dieses Thema hauptsächlich von einer nationalen und sozioökonomischen Perspektive betrachtet. Dieses Buch jedoch integriert solche fragmentierten Analysen, betrachtet sie aus einem weiteren Blickwinkel und ordnet sie im breiteren Zusammenhang des sozialen und demografischen Wandels Europas sowie der politischen und wirtschaftlichen Geschichte der europäischen Integration ein.Das Buch untersucht die Auswirkungen der EU-Migrationspolitik auf die politischen und wirtschaftlichen Außenbeziehungen Europas und erkennt die Migration aus osteuropäischen Ländern vor 1989 als Teil der europäischen Integration an.Indem das Buch zeigt, dass die Migrationspolitik und ihr Einfluss auf europäische Gesellschaften nur im Zusammenhang der EU-Rahmenbedingungen vollständig verstanden werden können, trägt es wesentlich zur Migrationsforschung im Allgemeinen bei.Mit Beiträgen von:Giulia Bentivoglio, Marcel Berlinghoff, Cristina Blanco Sío-López, Elena Calandri, Alice Cunha, Yves Denéchère, Pawel Jaworski, Slawomir Lukasiewicz, Willem Maas, Guia Migani, Simone Paoli, Dimitris Parsanoglou, Yvette Santos, Beatrice Scutaru, Jacek Tebinka, Moshik Temkin, Giota Tourgeli und Roberto Ventresca.
    Abstract: Movement of people has been a key feature in the whole history of European integration. While existing literature has mostly adopted national viewpoints and a socioeconomic perspective, this book integrates these existing fragmented analyses, views them from a broader perspective and places them in the wider context of the social and demographic transformation of Europe and the political and economic narrative of continental integration. It highlights the impact made by EC/EU immigration policies on the external political and economic relations of Europe and acknowledges that pre-1989 migration from East European countries is part of European integration. By showing that migration policies and their impact on European national societies and economies cannot be fully understood without taking into account the EC framework, this book, therefore, contributes to migration studies as a whole.
