    Kurzfassung: This book offers a critical analysis of global mobilities across China and Italy in history. In three periods in the twentieth century, new patterns of physical mobilities and cultural contact were established between the two countries which were either novel at the time of their emergence or impactful on subsequent periods. The first two chapters provide overviews of writings by Italians in China and by Chinese in Italy in the twentieth century. The remaining chapters cover: Republican Chinas relationships with Italy and Italian Fascist colonialism in China during the 1920s1930s; Italian travelers to China during the Cold War from the 1950s to the 1970s; migrations between China and Italy during the 2000s2010s. In analyzing these cultural mobilities, this book opens a new line of inquiry in Chinese-Italian Cultural Studies, which has been dominated by historical study, and contributes a significant case study to the scholarship on global cultural mobilities

    Kurzfassung: Seit dem Ersten Weltkrieg galten Massenkommunikation und Propaganda als integrale Faktoren des politischen und militärischen Geschehens. Damit wuchs der Bedarf an systematischer Expertise und wissenschaftlicher Erforschung. Während des Zweiten Weltkrieges und im Kalten Krieg wurde die Planung, Beobachtung und Analyse von Propaganda zu einem wichtigen Feld strategischer Wissensproduktion. Im Wege einer dreiseitig verflochtenen Wahrnehmungs- und Beziehungsgeschichte untersucht Benno Nietzel, welche Rolle Kommunikationsexperten und Wissenschaftler in der Propaganda dreier Länder spielten: in den Vereinigten Staaten, in Deutschland und der Sowjetunion. Verschiedene Akteursgruppen konkurrierten jeweils um Gehör, Einfluss und Zuständigkeiten auf dem Gebiet der Propaganda. Aus ihren Erfolgen und ihrem Scheitern ergibt sich eine alternative Geschichte von Verwissenschaftlichungsprozessen und Expertentum im 20. Jahrhundert, die von Ungleichzeitigkeiten, Gegenläufigkeiten und Widersprüchen gekennzeichnet ist

    Kurzfassung: Black communities have been making major contributions to Europe's social and cultural life and landscapes for centuries. However, their achievements largely remain unrecognized by the dominant societies, as their perspectives are excluded from traditional modes of marking public memory. For the first time in European history, leading Black scholars and activists examine this issue – with first-hand knowledge of the eight European capitals in which they live. Highlighting existing monuments, memorials, and urban markers they discuss collective narratives, outline community action, and introduce people and places relevant to Black European history, which continues to be obscured today.

    Kurzfassung: "The field of biopolitics encompasses issues from health and hygiene, birth rates, fertility and sexuality, life expectancy and demography, to eugenics and racial regimes. This book is the first to provide a comprehensive view on these issues for Central and Eastern Europe in the 20th century. The cataclysms of imperial collapse, World War(s) and the Holocaust but also the rise of state socialism after 1945 provided extraordinary and distinct conditions for the governing of life and death. The volume collects the latest research and empirical studies from the region to showcase the diversity of biopolitical regimes in their regional and global context - from hunger relief for Hungarian children after World War I to abortion legislation in communist Poland. It underlines the similarities as well, demonstrating how biopolitical strategies in this area often revolved around the notion of an endangered nation; and how ideological schemes and post-imperial experiences in Eastern Europe further complicate a "western" understanding of democratic participatory and authoritarian repressive biopolitics. The new geographical focus invites scholars and students of social and human sciences to reconsider established perspectives on the history of population management and the history of Europe"--

    Kurzfassung: As we face new global challenges - from climate change to the international political order - the need to re-examine the historical roots of cosmopolitanism and liberal principles on a global scale has become increasingly central to the political conversation. Cosmopolitanism and the Enlightenment brings together leading scholars in cultural history, the history of ideas and global politics in order to reassess the complexity of cosmopolitanism during the Enlightenment and its various interpretations over time. Through a fresh and revisionist perspective, the volume explores issues of universalism and cultural diversity, the idea of civilization, race, gender, empire, colonialism, global inequality, national patriotism, international and civil conflict, and other forms of political discourse, challenging the simple negative stereotype that the Enlightenment was inevitably hierarchical and Eurocentric. Addressing the creation, negotiation, and (re)use of diverse spaces and places of belonging, the book examines their fascinating complexities in the context of a changing Europe. Taking an innovative interdisciplinary approach, the volume examines renegotiations of belonging played out through cultural encounters with difference and change, in diverse public spaces and contested places. Bram van Leuveren examines how the late Valois and early Bourbon rulers of the kingdom made conscious use of festivals to advance their diplomatic interests in a war-torn Europe and how diplomatic stakeholders from across the continent participated in and responded to the theatrical and ceremonial events that featured at these festivals. Analysing a large body of multi-lingual eyewitness and commemorative accounts, as well as visual and material objects, Van Leuveren argues that French festival culture operated as a contested site where the diplomatic concerns of stakeholders from various national, religious, and social backgrounds fought for recognition"--

    Kurzfassung: Examines why and how cultural encounters between East Asia and Europe are framed as failures Opens up fresh perspectives on intercultural encounters by focusing on failures as a paradigm Argues that a focus on failure helps to uncover the normative perspectives and expectations of intercultural encountersEstablishes that intercultural encounters add a valuable new perspective to the emerging field of failure studiesOften, the story of encounters between Asia and the West has been told as one of success, of cross-fertilization, reciprocal stimulation and an exchange of commodities and knowledge. Yet, the history of East-West encounters is riddled with prominent examples of misunderstandings, ignorance, unrealistic expectations or unbridgeable cultural differences. Bringing together scholars working across Chinese Studies, Japanese Studies, English Studies and French Studies, this book presents new perspectives on such instances by theorizing epistemologies of failure. Providing examples from different periods and disciplines, it reveals how culturally informed expectations and biases, performative and linguistic practices and imaginative horizons specific to the cultures involved shape notions of failure and success. Case studies range from first encounters in the early modern period to contemporary novels and focus on actual or imaginary encounters between East Asia and Western European cultures

    Kurzfassung: Klappentext: Issues of cultural identity and cultural heritage are at the heart of contemporary discourses in many parts of the world. They are used to identify and address the inequalities by marginalized groups; however, they also feed the re-nationalization and ethno-purist fantasies. But what exactly is culture? In this volume, the authors explore how culture is conceptualized and practised by young people in eight countries in numerous and very diverse contexts - schools, interest clubs, organizations and informal youth groups. The chapters show that concepts of culture vary widely within and across sites, regions and countries, highlighting the common, as well as particular, challenges that notions of identity and heritage pose for young people who often aspire to an inclusive and open society.

    Kurzfassung: In der Dissertation werden drei künstlerische Arbeiten zu Flucht und Migration nach und innerhalb von Europa untersucht. Es handelt sich dabei um eine Filminstallation von Isaac Julien sowie eine Fotografie und eine multimediale Rauminstallation von Tanja Ostojić. Es wird davon ausgegangen, dass die Art und Weise, wie Flucht- und Migrationsbewegungen auf den und innerhalb des europäischen Kontinents repräsentiert werden, nicht zuletzt auch davon abhängt, wie letzterer – verstanden als räumliches und identitäres Konzept – imaginiert wird. Daher liegt ein Schwerpunkt in der Analyse der künstlerischen Arbeiten auf den Repräsentationen Europas. Theoretischer Bezugspunkt hierfür sind postkoloniale und kritische Europastudien. Darüber hinaus spielt Weiblichkeit eine wichtige Rolle in der Formierung spezifischer (Vorstellungs-)Bilder von Flucht und Migration einerseits, Europa andererseits und schließlich ihres Verhältnisses zueinander. Sie stellt daher den zweiten Schwerpunkt in der Analyse dar, die auf Beiträge in der feministischen Forschung zur Formierung von (nationalen) Gemeinschaften Bezug nimmt.
    Kurzfassung: The dissertation examines three artistic works dealing with migration to and within Europe. The works examined are a film installation by Isaac Julien as well as a photograph and a multimedia installation by Tanja Ostojić. It is assumed that the way in which migration is represented on and within the European continent depends not least on how the latter - understood as a spatial and identitary concept - is imagined. Therefore, the analysis of the artistic works focuses on the representation of Europe. Theoretical reference points for this are postcolonial and critical European studies. Furthermore, femininity plays an important role in the formation of specific (imagined) images of migration on the one hand, of Europe on the other, and finally their relationship to one another. It therefore constitutes the second focus of the analysis, which makes reference to contributions in feminist research on the formation of (national) communities.

    Kurzfassung: "This book is a vital exploration of the harrowing stories of mass displacement that took place in the first half of the 20th century from the perspective of forced migrants themselves. The volume brings together 15 interrelated case studies which show how the deportation, evacuation and flight of millions of people as a result of the First World War intensified rather than alleviated ethnic conflicts which culminated in population transfers on an even larger scale during and immediately after the Second World War. While each chapter focuses on a different group of refugees and displaced persons, the text as a whole looks at the experience of forced migration as a complex set of evolving relationships with the receiving society, the homeland, the broader diaspora and other migrant communities living within the same host country. This innovative, four-dimensional model provides an overarching conceptual framework that binds the chapters together within the longer arc of European history. By going beyond the conventional narratives of national victimhood and (un)successful assimilation of refugees, A Transnational History of Forced Migrants in Europe reveals that identities of forced migrants in the first half of the 20th century were individualised, hybrid and constantly reconstructed in response to socioeconomic forces and political pressures. The case studies collected in this volume further suggest that age, gender, social class, educational level and the personal experiences of 'unwilling nomads' are more important to the understanding of forced migration history than ethnoreligious identities of victims and perpetrators."--

    Kurzfassung: This book illustrates the multiple roles of textbooks as victim, transformer, and accomplice to conflict by introducing the Intersecting Roles of Education in Conflict (IREC) framework for use in the research, development, production, distribution, and dissemination of textbooks and learning materials. The framework illustrates these three potentially overlapping roles by mapping the complex educational contexts of conflict-affected societies and considering how textbooks, learning materials, and education systems more broadly may simultaneously operate within these various roles. Country case studies from Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East are used to analyze primary and secondary school textbook development, content, and application from a variety of approaches that articulate conflict as protracted and/or socio-political violence. The breadth of case studies shows how conflict discourse circulates in educational systems and materials in a wide range of contexts, indicating that the complexity of the relationship between textbooks and conflict is not unique to one culture, geographic region, or type of conflict.

    Kurzfassung: This volume offers new insights into the radical shift in attitudes towards death and the dead body that occurred in temperate Bronze Age Europe. Exploring the introduction and eventual dominance of cremation, Marie-Louise Stig Sørenson and Katharina Rebay-Salisbury apply a case-study approach to investigate how this transformation unfolded within local communities located throughout central to northern Europe. They demonstrate the deep link between the living and the dead body, and propose that the introduction of cremation was a significant ontological challenge to traditional ideas about death. In tracing the responses to this challenge, the authors focus on three fields of action: the treatment of the dead body, the construction of a burial place, and ongoing relationships with the dead body after burial. Interrogating cultural change at its most fundamental level, the authors elucidate the fundamental tension between openness towards the 'new' and the conservative pull of the familiar and traditional

    Kurzfassung: This book is about re-writing the history of cultures from a non-patriarchal perspective, bringing the forgotten matriarchal epoch to light again. It is based on Heide Goettner-Abendroth’s pioneering anthropological research on still extant matriarchal societies worldwide, which provided her with a new definition of "matriarchy" as true gender-egalitarian societies. According to modern Matriarchal Studies, matriarchies have never needed patriarchy’s hierarchical structures of domination, as they are socially egalitarian, economically balanced, and politically based on consensus decisions.This is the author’s background for re-examining the history of cultures.     Kurzfassung: Vorstellungen Europas, Selbst- und Fremdbilder, Raum- und Grenzkonstruktionen wurden und werden besonders seit der Sattelzeit um 1800 gerade auch über Diskurse eines ‚Abendlandes‘ geformt. Abendlanddiskurse lassen sich als polyvalent einsetzbare, modellier- und adaptierbare Diskurskomplexe und als Gewebe von Erinnerungsdiskursen bezeichnen, die mal stärker nationalistisch, mal stärker religiös, mal stärker universalistisch ausgeformt, mehr oder weniger stark auf Grenzkonstruktion ausgerichtet sind und mehr oder weniger konkret politisch verwendet werden. Dem interdisziplinären Band wird die These zugrunde gelegt, dass Abendlanddiskurse wesentlich durch den Gebrauch von Gedächtnisbeständen, durch eine Pluralität miteinander verwobener Erinnerungsnarrative konstruiert werden. Im Fokus der Beiträge von Historikerinnen, Geschichtsdidaktikern und Literaturwissenschaftlern aus Deutschland, Österreich, Frankreich, Italien, Belgien und der Schweiz stehen Intellektuellendiskurse und deren Vermittlung im öffentlichen Raum, Literatur und Kunst.

    Kurzfassung: Ethnographic museums, now often rebranded as collections of ‘world cultures’, appear permanently problematic, even as their contexts and the orientation of their activities change. Across Europe and elsewhere, curators and other museum staff are committed to dialogue and collaboration with the peoples from whom collections were made. But their vast assemblages of artefacts, removed from countries of origin primarily during the colonial period, and assumed, mostly inaccurately, to have been looted, seem always in question. Photo-Museology arises from an art project undertaken over 25 years. From the early 1990s, Mark Adams and Nicholas Thomas together investigated sites of cross-cultural encounter in the Pacific and associated places in Europe, ranging from Captain Cook memorials to ethnographic museums. Some of those museums still exhibited colonial symbols and forms of knowledge, others had attempted to displace such histories, foregrounding more inclusive or progressive stories. Complementing the academic studies in the Pacific Presences series, this book offers what John Berger referred to as ‘another way of telling’. Through photography, it revisits the places collections were made, and the places they ended up in. It is a meditation on presence and absence.

    Kurzfassung: "In the Christian tradition, death was a punishment by God for the original sin of Adam and Eve. Banished from the Garden of Eden after eating the forbidden fruit of the tree of knowledge, they were condemned to labour, until "you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; you are dust, and to dust you shall return."2 But later in historical time, God sent his son Jesus Christ to earth to teach people how to overcome death and achieve eternal life, as witnessed in the gospels. Christ taught that if sinful humans would repent of their sins and love God, they would be saved from death, for as he said to Martha in the house of Lazarus, "I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live."3 The central narrative of Christian soteriology is the death of Christ himself, through crucifixion, and his resurrection from the dead three days later. Having triumphed over death, his purpose was to lead his followers to salvation. After Christ's bodily ascension into heaven, the task of saving souls for eternity was passed to his church. The emphasis on Christ's death and resurrection, and its representation in the eucharistic service, mean that death and commemoration lie at the very heart of Christianity"--

    Kurzfassung: Die süddeutsche Städtelandschaft – landschaftsprägend – regional prägend – literarisch, musisch, onomastisch – ökonomisch – urban und stadtprägend – europäisch vergleichend
    Kurzfassung: In der Geografie, als einer Leitwissenschaft in Sachen «Landschaft», definiert man aktuell Städtelandschaften als maßstäblich und räumlich ganz unterschiedliche Ebenen. Diese lassen sich auf einzelne Städte, auf bestimmte Stadtregionen und selbst auf Metropolregionen oder die seit 1918 eingeführte Megalopolis projizieren. Historiker verstehen unter einer «Städtelandschaft» meist ein Gebiet mittlerer Größenordnung mit unterschiedlich starker Urbanisierung, wobei in der «Stadtlandschaft» Städte und Märkte, Bürger und Händler im umschriebenen Raum zwangsläufig eine dominierende Rolle spielen. Der interterritoriale Vergleich führt uns einerseits hinaus in die Welt der europäischen Urbanität, andererseits liegt ein deutlicher Fokus auf den großen wie kleinen Städten Süddeutschlands. In Farbe und Ausführlichkeit analysieren die Autoren dort die Stadtkultur vom Mittelalter bis zur Moderne. Politische, soziale und ökonomische Netzwerke werden ebenso behandelt wie spannende interstädtische Bezüge durch Reisende, Gelehrsamkeit, Schulen, Literatur oder Musik.
