Die Menschen, die in der Stadt leben, werden dabei zum Ziel architektonischer Verdrängungsmaßnahmen. Mickaël Labbé zeigt, wie ganze Bevölkerungsteile durch eine kaum wahrnehmbare Architektur der Verachtung als unerwünscht ausgeschlossen werden. Überwachungskameras, Bänke mit geneigter Sitzfläche oder trennenden Armlehnen, auf denen man nicht schlafen kann, und andere subtile Maßnahmen erschweren insbesondere sozial marginalisierten Menschen wie Obdachlosen das Leben in der Stadt.Gegen diese Tendenz führt Labbé die Notwendigkeit ins Feld, eine Stadt neu zu erfinden, die sich an uns alle richtet. Anstelle von ausschließenden Mechanismen braucht es Räume, in denen wir unsere Verbindungen wieder enger knüpfen können. Denn eine Stadt, die nicht mehr auf ihre gemeinschaftliche Nutzung ausgerichtet ist, die nur aus homogenen Ghettos besteht, wo wir einander nicht mehr konfrontativ und in aller Unterschiedlichkeit begegnen können, ist ein Verlust für uns alle.Labbé beschreibt funktionierende Beispiele einer "Architektur der Anerkennung" und plädiert für eine Wiederaneignung des öffentlichen Raums

    Abstract: Dieses Lexikon ist ein Novum der Musikliteratur. Erstmals werden alle wichtigen Texte zur Musiktheorie und Musikästhetik in lexikalischer Form von internationalen Spezialistinnen und Spezialisten beschrieben und für die Wissenschaft und Praxis leichter zugänglich gemacht. In diesem zweiten Band wird ein umfangreiches Corpus von rund 450 primär europäischen und nordamerikanischen Texten von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart vorgestellt. Neben im engeren Sinne ästhetischen und musikästhetischen Schriften wie etwa Immanuel Kants „Kritik der Urteilskraft“ (1790), Eduard Hanslicks „Vom Musikalisch-Schönen“ (1854) und Zofia Lissas „Ästhetik der Filmmusik“ (1964) finden viele andere Textformen Berücksichtigung: Denn auch die Verfasser der Bibel und frühneuzeitlicher Erziehungsliteratur, Komponisten wie Robert Schumann und John Cage, Dichter wie Ovid und E. T. A. Hoffmann oder Romanautorinnen und Romanautoren wie Dorothea Schlegel und Honoré de Balzac haben auf ihre Weise über Musik nachgedacht. Wie schon in Band 1 – Musiktheorie von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart – sind die Artikel alphabetisch nach Autorinnen und Autoren geordnet und folgen jeweils demselben Aufbau: • Grundlegende Informationen zum Originaltext, seinen Quellen, Editionen und Übersetzungen • Beschreibung des Inhalts • Kommentar, der den Text in seine jeweilige Zeit und die relevanten Diskurse einordnet sowie seine Bedeutung und Rezeption darlegt • Hinweise zu wichtiger Forschungsliteratur Damit bietet der Band Studierenden, Lehrenden und Forschenden der Musikwissenschaft sowie anderer geistes- und kulturwissenschaftlicher Fächer einen Überblick über das weite Feld der musikästhetischen Literatur – von der Bibel und Aristoteles über Quantz, Kant, Schumann, Wagner, Thomas Mann, Adorno bis zu Brendel, Boulez und Eco.

    Abstract: The English folk revival cannot be understood when divorced from the history of post-war England, yet the existing scholarship fails to fully engage with its role in the social and political fabric of the nation. Postwar Politics, Society and the Folk Revival in England is the first study to interweave the story of a gentrifying folk revival with the socio-political tensions inherent in England's postwar transition from austerity to affluence. Julia Mitchell skillfully situates the English folk revival in the context of the rise of the new left, the decline of heavy industry, the rise of local, regional and national identities, the 'Americanisation' of English culture and the development of mass culture. In doing so, she demonstrates that the success of the English folk revival derived from its sense of authenticity and its engagement with topical social and political issues, such as the conflicted legacy of the Welfare State, the fight for nuclear disarmament and the fallout of nationalization. In addition, she shrewdly compares the US and British revival to identify the links but also what was distinctive about the movement in Britain. Drawing on primary sources from folk archives, the BBC, the music press and interviews with participants, this is a theoretically engaged and sophisticated analysis of how postwar culture shaped the folk revival in England.

    Abstract: Biographical note: Achim Brunnengräber (PD Dr. phil. habil.), geb. 1963, ist Privatdozent an der Freien Universität Berlin im Fachbereich Politik- und Sozialwissenschaften. Er beschäftigt sich am Forschungszentrum für Umweltpolitik mit der politischen Ökonomie der Elektro-Mobilität. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind darüber hinaus die Umwelt-, Energie- und Klimapolitik sowie die Endlager-Governance für hoch radioaktive Reststoffe. Tobias Haas (Dr. rer. soc.), geb. 1983, ist wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Forschungszentrum für Umweltpolitik an der Freien Universität Berlin und am »Institute For Advanced Sustainability Studies e.V.« in Potsdam. 2018 war er Stipendiat am DFG-Kolleg »Postwachstumsgesellschaften« an der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena. Er beschäftigt sich mit den Auseinandersetzungen um die Verkehrswende und den Strukturwandel in der Lausitz

Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington and other well-known jazz musicians were sent around the world – including to an array of Communist countries – as "jazz ambassadors" in order to mitigate the negative image associated with domestic racial problems. While many non-Americans embraced the Americanism behind this jazz diplomacy without question, others criticized American domestic and foreign policies while still appreciating jazz – thus jazz, despite its popularity, also became a medium for expressing anti-Americanism. This book examines the development of jazz outside America, including across diverse historical periods and geographies – shedding light on the effectiveness of jazz as an instrument of state power within a global political context.

Kirsten Seidlitz untersucht, wie sie von Deutschland aus mit ihrem musikalischen Schaffen politisch kommentieren, inwiefern die deutsche Gesellschaft mit Musik erreicht, aufgeklärt und beeinflusst werden kann, und ob die in Deutschland produzierte Musik zurück in die Türkei gelangt.

    Abstract: Vor welche Probleme wird die Kommunalpolitik in Bezug auf Stadtentwicklung und Klima gestellt und warum können diesbezügliche bundespolitische Programme nicht so einfach umgesetzt werden? Aus einer politisch-geographischen Perspektive zeigt Cindy Sturm am Beispiel von Dresden und Münster, dass diese Programme auf unterschiedliche Rationalitäten und Problematisierungen treffen und in vielfältigen, auch unerwarteten oder widerständigen Praktiken der Stadtentwicklungspolitik angeeignet und modifiziert werden. Basierend auf diskurs- und gouvernementalitätstheoretischen Ansätzen trägt die Studie somit dazu bei, die Komplexität kommunaler Politik allgemein bzw. von Klimapolitik im Besonderen zu verdeutlichen

    Abstract: Music has long been an avenue for protest, seen as a way to promote freedom and equality, instill hope, and fight for change. Popular music, in particular, is considered to be an effective form of subversion and resistance under oppressive circumstances. But as Nomi Dave shows us in The Revolution's Echoes, the opposite is also true-music can often support, rather than challenge, the powers that be. Examining fifty years of history in Guinea, Dave introduces readers to the music supporting the authoritarian regime of former president Sékou Touré, and to the musicians who, even long after his death, have continued to praise dictators and avoid dissent. Dave shows that this isn't just the result of state manipulation-even in the absence of coercion, musicians and their audiences take real pleasure in musical praise of leaders. Time and again, whether in traditional music or in newer genres such as rap, Guinean musicians have celebrated state power and authority. With The Revolution's Echoes, Dave insists that we must grapple with the uncomfortable truth that some forms of music choose to support authoritarianism, generating new pleasures and new politics in the process

    Abstract: Das private Auto war für lange Zeit das Sehnsuchtsobjekt und Symbol eines glücklichen Lebens. Es war eine kollektive Liebe der Mittelschicht und derjenigen, die dort hinstrebten. Doch diese affektive Bindung verliert vor allem in der Stadt zunehmend an Kraft. Wenigstens dort ist bereits klar geworden: Die Grenzen des fossilen Automobilismus sind erreicht. Es gibt einfach zu viele Autos. Die Verkehrswende ist nun auf der Agenda. Zukunftsfähig sind nur solche Verkehrsangebote, die auch unter Ressourcenknappheit individualisierbar bleiben. Autos nutzen statt besitzen wird - in Verbindung mit digitalen Plattformen - attraktiv, das Radfahren gewinnt gerade in den Städten an Popularität. Mobilitätsdienstleistungen kommen aus der Nische und können dank Echtzeitinformationen flexibel und zugleich routinemäßig genutzt werden. Der herrschende Rechtsrahmen jedoch privilegiert nach wie vor private Autos. Dagegen deuten die Präferenzen der vorwiegend städtischen Bevölkerung und auch die digitalen Optionen in eine andere Richtung: Die fortschreitende Individualisierung findet andere Wege als den privaten Besitz von Autos.     Abstract: Der Begriff der Aneignung erlebt in Diskursen zu Theorie, Praxis und Politik der Stadtentwicklung ein Revival: Angesichts der Dynamiken spätmoderner Ökonomie und Politik geht es um die Verfügbarkeit und den selbstbestimmten Gebrauch von städtischem Raum und Lebenszeit. Dieser Diskurs schließt auch das »Selber machen« von urbanen Freiräumen mit ein, »Stadtentwicklung von unten« soll die urbanen Freiräume von morgen bestimmen. Bereits nach der Planungseuphorie der 1950/60er Jahre lenkte man den Blick auf »andere« Akteure der Produktion und des Gebrauchs von urbanen Freiräumen. Dieses Buch widmet sich der vergleichenden Betrachtung der damaligen und aktuellen Theorien über die Aneignung von urbanen Freiräumen in verschiedenen Fachdisziplinen.
