In seinem neuen Buch gibt Jens Beckert eine Antwort.     Abstract: NEUE PERSPEKTIVEN AUF DIE DEUTSCHE KOLONIALGESCHICHTE Die eigene Zeit als Kolonialmacht sei im Vergleich mit Ländern wie Frankreich oder Großbritannien kurz und relativ unproblematisch gewesen: So sah man es hierzulande lange. Doch das war ein Irrtum. Heute steht die deutsche koloniale Vergangenheit zu Recht im Zentrum kontrovers geführter Debatten über das koloniale Erbe in einer globalen Welt. Dieses Buch beleuchtet mit dem Auswärtigen Amt einen zentralen Akteur des deutschen Kolonialismus und spannt den Bogen vom Deutschen Kaiserreich bis weit ins 20. Jahrhundert hinein. Dabei richtet sich der Blick nicht nur auf Deutschland, sondern auch in die betroffenen Gesellschaften Afrikas, Asiens und Ozeaniens. Mit dem Versailler Vertrag von 1919 endete die formale deutsche Kolonialherrschaft. Doch koloniales Denken lebte in der Mitte der deutschen Ge sellschaft fort - so auch im Auswärtigen Amt, dem eine Mitverantwortung für Gewalt und Verbrechen in den deutschen Kolonien zukommt. Die Folgen seines Handelns sind noch bis in unsere Gegenwart spürbar. In der Zeit der NS-Diktatur verbanden sich nationalkonservative, monarchistische und antirepublikanische Haltungen im Auswärtigen Amt mit den expansionistischen und rassistischen Zielen des Nationalsozialismus. Ab 1949 prägten Indifferenz und Ignoranz, Passivität und Relativierung die bundesdeutsche Politik gegenüber den ehemaligen Kolonien im globalen Süden. Heute ist das Amt maßgeblich an Verhandlungen über Restitution und Wiedergutmachung beteiligt. Zudem wird es von einer diverser gewordenen deutschen Gesellschaft mit Fragen zur kolonialen Vergangenheit konfrontiert. Aus Gründen der historischen Gerechtigkeit, aber auch angesichts einer veränderten Weltlage muss sich das Amt seiner eigenen Kolonialgeschichte stellen.     Abstract: Hate speech has been extensively studied by disciplines such as social psychology, sociology, history, politics and law. Some significant areas of study have been the origins of hate speech in past and modern societies around the world; the way hate speech paves the way for harmful social movements; the socially destructive force of propaganda; and the legal responses to hate speech. On reviewing the literature, one major weakness stands out: hate speech, a crime perpetrated primarily by malicious and damaging language use, has no significant study in the field of linguistics. Historically, pragmatic theories have tended to address language as cooperative action, geared to reciprocally informative polite understanding. As a result of this idealized view of language, negative types of discourse such as harassment, defamation, hate speech, etc. have been neglected as objects of linguistic study. Since they go against social, moral and legal norms, many linguists have wrongly depicted those acts of wrong communication as unusual, anomalous or deviant when they are, in fact, usual and common in modern societies all over the world.The book analyses the challenges legal practitioners and linguists must meet when dealing with hate speech, especially with the advent of new technologies and social networks, and takes a linguistic perspective by targeting the knowledge the linguist can provide that makes harassment actionable

    Abstract: "Linguistic Choices in the Contemporary City focuses on how individuals navigate conversation in highly diversified contexts and provides a broad overview of state of the art research in urban sociolinguistics across the globe. Bearing in mind the impact of international travel and migration, the book accounts for the shifting contemporary studies to the workings of language choices of and between individuals in places where people with many different backgrounds meet and exchange ideas. It specifically addresses how people handle language use challenges in a broad range of settings to present themselves positively and meet their information and identity goals. While a speaker's experience runs like a thread through this volume, the linguistic, cultural and situational focus is as broad as possible. It runs from the language choices of Chinese immigrants to Beijing and Finnish immigrants to Japan to the use of the local lingua franca by motor taxi drivers in Ngaoundéré, Cameroon, and how Hungarian students in their dorm rooms express views on political correctness uninhibitedly. As it turns out, language play, improvisation, humour, lies, as well as highly marked subconscious pronunciation choices are natural parts of the discourses, and this volume provides numerous and extensive examples of these techniques. For each of the settings discussed, the perspective is taken of personalised linguistic and extra-linguistic styles in tackling communicative challenges. This way, a picture is drawn of how postmodern individuals in extremely different cultural and situational circumstances turn out to have strikingly similar human behaviours and intentions. Linguistic Choices in the Contemporary City is of interest to all those who follow theoretical and methodological developments in this field. It will be of use for upper level students in the fields of Sociolinguistics, Pragmatics, Linguistic Anthropology, and related fields in which urban communicative settings are the focus"--

    Abstract: The study provides an extensive legal, geopolitical and historical analysis of all controversial issues making up the Greek-Turkish maritime dispute: the delimitation of territorial waters, the national airspace, the delineation of exclusive economic zones and continental shelf as well as the issue of military presence on the Eastern Aegean islands and its relation to the Greek sovereignty over them. By immersing thoroughly into international jurisprudence, international treaties and historical facts, the book offers a detailed survey of legal precedents and legal regimes over similar issues worldwide. In this way, the reader has the opportunity to ascertain where every single legal and historical argument has been drawn from and its relevance in the international jurisprudence. Consequently, it follows the evolution of the dispute together with all its twists from 1973 to 2022 that saw a new low in the historically tense Greek-Turkish relationship. The book finally re-examines the dispute in the light of the new green energy geopolitics and the ongoing climate crisis and comes up with some suggestions for an alternative paradigm of co-existence in the Aegean Sea which in the author’s view is urgent and inevitable. .

    Abstract: "How exactly do linguistic landscapes communicate and what theoretical significance might follow from such an inquiry? This book addresses these questions by taking as its starting point the insight that the individual or organization that is responsible for the production of a sign may not be physically present at the landscape itself. The information to be conveyed is typically designed as a piece of signage to be emplaced at the site. Drawing on Goffman's (1974, 1981) notion of a production format, the book argues that the constructed piece of sign and its intended placement within the landscape combine to constitute an animator complex. This raises the possibility of a disruption to the sign and its placement in the landscape. The book describes various ways in which the integrity of the animator complex can be disrupted (e.g. the sign may be moved out of place through vandalism or acts of nature, or the organization that the sign represents may no longer be in business), identifies different types of animators, and expands on the implications for phenomena such as affect, multivocality, footing and the materiality of language. In doing so, the book also demonstrates the value of bringing in Bakhtin's (1981, 1984, 1986) work on heteroglossia and the dialogicity of communication, integrating the ideas of Bakhtin with those of Goffman"--
