    Abstract: "The edited volume Both Muslim and European: Diasporic and Migrant Identities of Bosniaks scrutinizes some of the new aspects of the Bosniak history and identity and connects them with the experience of migration and diaspora formation. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, to volume tackles a variety of important questions and issues such as: the impact of migration waves on the Bosniak identity; dealing with the experience of war, genocide and forced displacement; the dual cultural code of being "in-between the two worlds"; the role of religion, language and culture in everyday life; looking at translocal and transnational networks and practices. Eine selten dumme Frage, meint Lale Akgün, die es seit langem stört, dass das Bild des Islams in Deutschland mittlerweile von Kopftuch tragenden Frauen und jungen Männern in salafistischem Outfit bestimmt wird. Denn von solchen Stereotype profitiert nicht nur die fremdenfeindliche Rechte, sondern auch der politische Islam. Als säkulare Muslimin will Lale Akgün auch andere darin bestärken, sich vom konservativen Gebots-Islam der Funktionäre zu emanzipieren. Indem sie sich – gemäß der Grundsätze der Aufklärung – ihres eigenen Verstandes bedient, kommt sie zu einer zeitgemäßen Interpretation des Islams, die nicht mit individueller Freiheit und Gleichberechtigung kollidiert. Sie beschreibt die Gesichter des politischen Islams und Mechanismen, die dazu führen, dass orthodoxe Strömungen ihren Einfluss ausweiten. Sie reflektiert gesellschaftliche Rahmenbedingungen, die einen liberalen Islam begünstigen würden, und fordert einen säkularen Staat, in dem alle Religionen ihren Platz haben und gleichberechtigt behandelt werden, aber nicht das öffentliche Leben bestimmen können. Im Bericht von Amnesty International 2017-2018 über die menschenrechtliche Situation in Swasiland werden neben Zwangsräumungen ohne Kompensation, besonders die Restriktionen der Versammlungsfreiheit, die willkürlichen Verhaftungen unter dem Terrorismusgesetz sowie die fehlende Implementierung von Gesetzen gegen sexuelle Gewalt angeprangert. Kaum etwas ist davon ist in deutschen Medien zu lesen, zu hören oder zu sehen. In diesem Buch beschreiben Autorinnen und Autoren aus Europa und Afrika, die Mitglieder im 2017 gegründeten Swasiland-Netzwerkes sind, verschiedene Aspekte der Situation in dem kleinen Land im südlichen Afrika.

    Abstract: Die Europa-Idee, die in den Nachkriegsjahren wirksam war, ist heute verdunstet. Diese Idee war stark geprägt vom Christentum, dem der alte Kontinent seine geistige Einheit verdankt. Die Institutionen des Christentums sind dabei konkurrierenden Interessen ihrer Mitglieder ausgesetzt, verlieren deren Zustimmung in unterschiedlicher Weise und haben das konfliktträchtige Potential ihrer konfessionellen Vielfalt noch nicht ganz überwunden. Daneben haben sogenannte fundamentalistische Richtungen innerhalb traditioneller Weltreligionen – in Europa außer dem Christentum auch das Judentum und der Islam – regen Zulauf. Der Band hinterfragt die traditionelle Rolle religiöser Werte für die Union, ihre Transformation in der Geschichte und behandelt ihre Gegenwart und Zukunft. Letzteres tut er zum einen mit Hinblick auf die Frage nach der Zugehörigkeit des Islam zu Europa – in seiner gegenwärtigen Präsenz als auch in seinem historisch-kulturellen und philosophischen Einfluss –, zum anderen im Vergleich zwischen der (in sich noch unterschiedlichen) europäischen Konzeption des Verhältnisses von Religion und Staat und anderer westlicher Staaten, namentlich den USA

    Abstract: Since the elections of 2002, Erdogan's AKP has dominated the political scene in Turkey. This period has often been understood as a break from a 'secular' pattern of state-building. But in this book, Ceren Lord shows how Islamist mobilisation in Turkey has been facilitated from within the state by institutions established during early nation-building. Lord thus challenges the traditional account of Islamist AKP's rise that sees it either as a grassroots reaction to the authoritarian secularism of the state or as a function of the state's utilisation of religion. Tracing struggles within the state, Lord also shows how the state's principal religious authority, the Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) competed with other state institutions to pursue Islamisation. Through privileging Sunni Muslim access to state resources to the exclusion of others, the Diyanet has been a key actor ensuring persistence and increasing salience of religious markers in political and economic competition, creating an amenable environment for Islamist mobilisation.

    Abstract: Der gerechte Frieden steht für einen fundamentalen Wandel in der ethischen Praxis: Nicht mehr der Krieg, sondern der Frieden in seiner wechselseitigen Bezogenheit zur Gerechtigkeit bildet den Fokus des neuen Konzeptes. Dennoch bleibt auch für den gerechten Frieden die Frage der Anwendung von Waffengewalt von zentraler Bedeutung.Ines-Jacqueline Werkner zeigt: Der aktuelle Diskurs um die internationale Schutzverantwortung und der damit verbundene Zielkonflikt zwischen dem Schutz bedrohter Menschen und der angestrebten Gewaltfreiheit lassen Widersprüche und Kontroversen offen zutage treten. Auch die ökumenische Debatte um den gerechten Frieden ist in hohem Maße von kirchlichen Divergenzen geprägt.
    Abstract: Just peace stands for a fundamental change of applied ethics: The focus of this new concept is no longer on war but rather on peace in its mutual relatedness to justice. Yet the question of using armed force remains to be of central importance even for just peace. Ines-Jacqueline Werkner shows: The current discourse on the international responsibility to provide protection and the conflict between the protection of humans in danger and the nonviolence envisaged that goes with it reveal contradictions and controversies. Even the ecumenical debate about just peace is significantly shaped by ecclesiastical divergences.

    Abstract: In der aktuellen Flüchtlingsdebatte stellt sich immer dringlicher die Frage nach einem neuen Gesellschaftsvertrag. Dabei sind insbesondere drei Aspekte zu berücksichtigen: erstens die politische Durchsetzung von Menschenrechten als eine moderne Errungenschaft der Geschichte; zweitens die soziale Unterfütterung dieses rechtlichen Schutzes durch uralte kulturelle Werte wie Empathie und Solidarität, und drittens ein Kanon von Regeln des fairen und respektvollen Zusammenlebens unter Einheimischen und Zugewanderten. Für diesen Kanon, der jenseits kultureller Differenzen als gemeinsame Verpflichtung anerkannt wird, schlägt Aleida Assmann den Begriff der "Menschenpflichten" vor, deren fünftausendjährige Geschichte sie rekonstruiert und für die Gegenwart aktualisiert.     Abstract: In the early twenty-first century it had become a cliche that there was a 'God Gap' between a more religious United States and a more secular Europe. The apparent religious differences between the United States and western Europe continue to be a focus of intense and sometimes bitter debate between three of the main schools in the sociology of religion. According to the influential 'Secularization Thesis', secularization has been an integral part of the processes of modernisation in the Western world since around 1800. For proponents of this thesis, the United States appears as an anomaly and they accordingly give considerable attention to explaining why it is different. For other sociologists, however, the apparently high level of religiosity in the USA provides a major argument in their attempts to refute the Thesis. Secularization and Religious Innovation in the Atlantic World provides a systematic comparison between the religious histories of the United States and western European countries from the eighteenth to the late twentieth century, noting parallels as well as divergences, examining their causes and especially highlighting change over time. This is achieved by a series of themes which seem especially relevant to this agenda, and in each case the theme is considered by two scholars. The volume examines whether American Christians have been more innovative, and if so how far is this explains the apparent 'God Gap'. It goes beyond the simple American/European binary to ask what is 'American' or 'European' in the Christianity of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and in what ways national or regional differences outweigh these commonalities
