Jahrhundert, zum Kommunikationsverhalten von Nutzer:innen in den Sozialen Medien oder den widersprüchlichen Aspekten der Quantentheorie. Der Begriff Widerspruch kann sowohl eine private Unmutsäußerung als auch den rechtlich verankerten Einspruch bezeichnen, aber auch Unvereinbarkeiten oder sich diametral gegenüberstehende Gegensätze. Auf der gesellschaftlichen Ebene werden solche Konflikte und Aushandlungsprozesse in Protesten sichtbar, wie jüngst den Anti-Corona-Demonstrationen, oder in Petitionen und Online-Kampagnen, wie #metoo oder #blacklivesmatter. Widersprüche sind feste Bestandteile gesellschaftlicher Aushandlungsprozesse sowie wissenschaftlicher Forschung. Die Autor:innen zeigen die vielen Facetten des Begriffs auf und beleuchten diese hinsichtlich ihrer Potenziale, medialen Ausprägungen und Wirkungsformen.

Und wie unterscheidet sich regimetypenspezifisch das (De-)Eskalationsmanagement? Kerstin Zettl-Schabath vergleicht mithilfe eines umfassenden Datensatzes für die Jahre 2000-2019 die staatlichen Cyber-Proxy-Strategien von China, Russland, den USA und Israel. Dabei zeigen sich je nach politischem System deutliche Abweichungen: Autokratien nutzen Proxys als "Puffer" gegenüber Demokratien, um für ihre Taten nicht belangt zu werden. Für Demokratien dagegen können Berichte privater IT-Unternehmen "Täter-Wissen" kommunizieren sowie Handlungsdruck infolge politischer Verantwortungszuweisungen reduzieren.

Veith Selk zeigt in seinem scharf analysierenden Buch, warum sowohl die demokratische Politik als auch die sie begleitenden Demokratietheorien an der Wirklichkeit scheitern. Instead of an epitaph for democracy, they offer a guide for democratic renewal, calling on citizens to recommit to a "civic bargain" with one another to guarantee civic rights of freedom, equality, and dignity. That bargain also requires them to fulfill the duties of democratic citizenship: governing themselves with no "boss" except one another, embracing compromise, treating each other as civic friends, and investing in civic education for each rising generation.Manville and Ober trace the long progression toward self-government through four key moments in democracy's history: Classical Athens, Republican Rome, Great Britain's constitutional monarchy, and America's founding. Comparing what worked and what failed in each case, they draw out lessons for how modern democracies can survive and thrive. Manville and Ober show that democracy isn't about getting everything we want; it's about agreeing on a shared framework for pursuing our often conflicting aims.     Abstract: Across Europe, people are deeply concerned about the state of democracy. This book shifts the attention away from ever-changing populist politicians that capture newspaper headlines to the centre-left and centre-right people's parties that used to buttress the democratic order over the past decades, but which are now in steep decline. Why does the crisis of these parties contribute so profoundly to today's crisis of democracy? And why were these parties so important for the stabilization and legitimation of democracy in the past century in the first place? By providing a long-term and transnational account of the history of democracy in modern Europe, the book reveals the striking parallels between the history of democracy and the history of the people's parties since 1918. The first part of the book shows how the failure to turn traditional working-class and confessional mass parties into people's parties played a vital role in the collapse of democracy in the 1920s and 1930s. It also explores the attractiveness of the people's party ideal centred on moderation, compromise and openness to pioneering politicians in the mid-century. The second part of the book then traces the practical application and breakthrough of this ideal in the decades after World War II and shows how this contributed to the stabilization and legitimation of democracy in the postwar decades. In the final part of the book, Corduwener turns to the slow decline of the people's parties since the mid-1970s. It explores how their failure to represent volatile and polarized societies was reflected in their aim to turn into 'open' and 'flexible' parties focused primarily on providing governmental efficiency - and how this eventually turned against them by alienating their members and voters. In so doing, Corduwener offers an original and timely study of twentieth century democracy that transcends traditional party groupings, divisions between eras, and national boundaries.

    Abstract: Armin Nassehi erklärt in seinem neuen Buch die zentralen gesellschaftlichen Grundbegriffe der Gegenwart. Was bedeutet es, wenn wir von Demokratie, Freiheit, Gleichheit/ Ungleichheit, Identität, Krise und Fremdheit sprechen? Diese Begriffe haben allesamt auch eine Herkunft im akademischen Kontext, haben in öffentlichen Debatten aber mit ihrem praktischen Gebrauch längst ein Eigenleben entwickelt. Von dort wirken sie übrigens auf den akademischen Begriffsgebrauch zurück. Nassehi bringt nun Ordnung in den Diskurs - nicht indem er eine «richtige» Begriffsbedeutung festlegen will, sondern indem er darüber aufklärt, welche offensichtlichen, aber auch welche versteckten Funktionen der Gebrauch dieser Grundbegriffe erfüllt. Er ist sich freilich dessen gewiss, dass, wie Niklas Luhmann einmal bemerkte, die Soziologie «neue Selbstbeschreibungen der Gesellschaft allenfalls anbrüten, nicht aber durchsetzen» kann. Armin Nassehis Sammlung gesellschaftlicher Grundbegriffe ist keine oberlehrerhafte Aufforderung zum richtigen Sprechen. Vielmehr werden die Begriffe methodisch danach abgeklopft, welche Funktion sie in Debatten haben. Die Grundfrage ist stets, für welches Problem solche Begriffe und ihr Gebrauch die Lösung sind. Gesellschaftliche Grundbegriffe wie Demokratie, Freiheit, Gleichheit/Ungleichheit, Identität, Krise und Fremdheit haben nicht nur eine lexikalische Bedeutung, die man historisch herleiten kann, sondern eben auch eine praktische Bedeutung durch ihren Gebrauch in Debatten. Wer erkennt, welche Funktion manche Begriffe haben, was sie zeigen und was sie verbergen, hat womöglich das Rüstzeug, öffentliche Debatten besser zu verstehen. Dabei richtet sich der Fokus in Nassehis Buch nicht nur auf den öffentlichen Gebrauch jener begrifflichen Vernunft, sondern auch auf die soziale Herkunft der Begriffe aus den Sozialwissenschaften - und auf die Art und Weise, wie sie vom öffentlichen Diskurs auf jene Wissenschaft zurückwirken.

    Abstract: Im letzten Jahrzehnt der DDR fanden Punk und seine experimentellen Verästelungen in Post-Punk, New Wave, Elektronischer Musik und Avantgarde-Rock und -Pop auch in dem stillen Land ihre Hörer. Wer hörte, wollte oft aber auch mehr: "Magnetizdat DDR" erzählt, wie aus Konsumenten schnell Produzenten wurden und DDR-weit eine sich selbst verlegende Kassettentäter-Szene entstand, der Magnetbanduntergrund. Ein Magnetizdat, in Ableitung von Samizdat und Tamizdat in der sowjetischen Gegenkultur. Hier wie dort, in Ost wie West, war dabei Multimedialität das Gebot der Stunde. Literaten ließen sich von Bands befeuern, Musiker entdeckten Barock- und Experimental-Lyrik, Super-8-Filmer und bildende Künstler griffen zum Mikrofon, international renommierte Projekte nahmen hier ihren Anfang.

    Abstract: Städtische Verwaltungen und Regierungen sind zunehmend besessen vom "Image" ihrer Stadt und stürzen sich in einen Vermarktungswettbewerb, der auf Tourismus, Investoren und Immobilienmärkte ausgerichtet ist. Die Menschen, die in der Stadt leben, werden dabei zum Ziel architektonischer Verdrängungsmaßnahmen. Mickaël Labbé zeigt, wie ganze Bevölkerungsteile durch eine kaum wahrnehmbare Architektur der Verachtung als unerwünscht ausgeschlossen werden. Überwachungskameras, Bänke mit geneigter Sitzfläche oder trennenden Armlehnen, auf denen man nicht schlafen kann, und andere subtile Maßnahmen erschweren insbesondere sozial marginalisierten Menschen wie Obdachlosen das Leben in der Stadt.Gegen diese Tendenz führt Labbé die Notwendigkeit ins Feld, eine Stadt neu zu erfinden, die sich an uns alle richtet. Anstelle von ausschließenden Mechanismen braucht es Räume, in denen wir unsere Verbindungen wieder enger knüpfen können.     Abstract: "It is 1969 and Joni Mitchell is on television, standing empty-handed in the middle of a circular stage that is adorned with psychedelic colors. She is wearing a long, hunter-green dress, surrounded by an audience sitting cross-legged on the floor. She waits for television host Dick Cavett to introduce her next performance. The show is filming on the day after the 1969 Woodstock music festival, an event that Mitchell was initially scheduled to attend but from which she was held back by her management to ensure she could perform on The Dick Cavett Show the next day. The host introduces Mitchell and jokes with her about singing a capella, wondering aloud if someone stole her guitar. The singer laughs politely in response, denies any theft, and then proceeds to her performance, explaining to the audience that she will be singing a "song for America" that she wrote "as a Canadian living in this country." With her hands clasped behind her back, she performs "The Fiddle and the Drum" with no accompaniment, channeling the folk performance tradition on which the song is based. This song about military participation is a rare political statement from Mitchell who, unlike her peers Bob Dylan and Buffy Sainte-Marie, had only released this one "protest song" by 1969. But the song's message was not a particularly risky proclamation. Her anti-war narrative echoed the opinions of the young Cavett Show audience that night, aligning with an established trend of resistance against the war in Vietnam. Similar to the way that Mitchell's song "Woodstock" would eventually capture the spirit of an event she did not attend, "The Fiddle and the Drum" characterizes a popular anti-war sentiment in the public consciousness of the late 1960s"--

    Abstract: This book sheds light on the theory of political leadership, which is still an under-researched field of political science. It is related to the philosophical argument about determinism versus activism and helps to understand the basic conflict of the 21st century between liberal democracy and new authoritarianism. The book looks at Max Weber’s typology of political rule and his concept of the ethics of responsibility, which are key to the theory of leadership. The author shows that the unfinished contest between democracy and new authoritarianism in the 21st century confirms the importance of leadership in old and new democracies as well as in the neo-authoritarian regimes and calls for a new type of political leaders. Political scientists and political sociologists tend to concentrate on the analysis of social forces, often to the extent of ignoring the active role of leading individuals. Two main trends in 19th century philosophy (Hegelian determinism vs. Carlyle’s romanticism) can be reconciled by adopting which interpretation of history based on the concept of „alternative roads“, the choice between which makes political leadership crucial for understanding politics. Leaders play particularly important roles in times of crises. In the 20th century such crises were created by two world wars (with the crucial role of such leaders as Woodrow Wilson, Winston Churcill, Charles de Gaulle, but also Adolph Hitler und Joseph Stalin) and revolutions (with Wladimir Lenin and Mao Zedong as revolutionary leaders of totalitarian states). During the cold war emerged a new type of democratic leadership devoted to the solidarity of democratic states and to the European integration (Konrad Adenauer, Willy Brandt, Robert Schuman). The transition to democracy in the last quarter of the 20th century depended to a large degree on the quality of leaders as demonstrated both by successes and failures of post-dictatorial regimes (Mikhail Gorbachev and Boris Yeltsin in Russia, Lech Walesa and Wojciech Jaruzelski in Poland, Adolfo Suarez in Spain, Nelson Mandela in South Africa etc.).

    Abstract: Die vorliegende Arbeit analysiert die mögliche Funktions- und Wirkungsweise von Folter in politischen Systemen und geht vor dem Hintergrund des de facto Verbots der Folter im Völkerrecht der Frage nach, welchen Zweck die Folter im 21. Jahrhundert in Demokratien und Diktaturen eigentlich einnimmt. Die Autorin arbeitet die verschiedensten interdisziplinären Aspekte der Folter heraus. So wird die Gundlage für das theoretische Konstrukt eines Funktions- und Wirkungskataloges gebildet. Nach einem Überblick über die Folter im Laufe der Jahrhunderten und möglicher Sonderformen der Folter wird dieser Katalog anhand von sechs Länderbeispielen analysiert. Drei der Beispiele fallen dabei auf das demokratische Sprektrum der politischen Systeme wie die USA, Spanien und Israel. Die anderen drei nehmen Diktaturen des 21. Jahrhundert in den Fokus (China, Irak und Nigeria). Die Autorin Nach einem Studium der Politikwissenschaften an der Universität Regensburg und der Vanderbilt University promovierte Linda Wimmer am Institut für Politikwissenschaften am Lehrstuhl für Vergleichende Politikwissenschaften der Universität Regensburg. Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen in der Internationalen Politik mit einem Fokus auf den Auslandseinsätzen der Bundeswehr, Terrorismus, dem Afghanistankonflikt, Irakkrieg und Verstößen gegen die Menschenrechte, speziell der Thematik der Folter. Momentan ist die Autorin im Wissenschaftsmanagement im Präsidialstab für Strategie- und Exzellenzentwicklung der TU München tätig.

    Abstract: Im Stadtraum wird Politik gemacht: durch Gentrifizierung und Abschottung, durch autoritäre Sicherheitsmaßnahmen, durch Anpassung an Investment-­Interessen. Und es wird Gewinn gemacht: mit Wohnungsnot, mit Betongold, mit urbanem Raum als Kapitalanlage. Neoliberales Regieren und rechtsnationale Kampagnen machen die Stadt zum Ort der Angst und der Verknappung. Wie aber kann eine Politik in der Stadt aussehen, die an Demokratie und Soli­darität orientiert ist? Das Anliegen dieses Buches ist eine kapitalismuskritisch positionierte Stadtplanungspolitik, die Konflikte anerkennt und Allianzen eingeht. Stadtkonflikte formuliert einen radikaldemokratischen Ansatz zu Architektur und Stadtplanung – mit einem prüfenden Blick auf realisierte Utopien des Roten Wien, durch kritische Beleuchtung partizipativer Planung, in Bündnissen mit sozialen Bewegungen. Zwischen politischer Theorie, Städtebau­-Diskurs und eingreifender Praxis geht es darum, Räume und Spielräume der Demokratie – gerade in ihrer Krise – nicht nur zu verteidigen, sondern auszubauen.

    Abstract: "In Spain, on May 15, 2011, a movement against austerity measures began. In a time when representative democracies were under threat, 15M came to life as a virtuous and democratic response to the slide into far-right populism and authoritarianism. More than a social movement, 15M became a mode of being with transformative, democratizing potential. In Democracy Here and Now, Pablo Ouziel offers a grounded analysis of 15M. At the time of the movement and during the ensuing encampments, Ouziel travelled extensively, speaking to participants, and keeping an ongoing record of his conversations. Presenting an original participatory mode of research, the book reveals six types of intersubjective, “joining hands” relationships that 15M has brought into being and works to carry on in creative ways. The book shows how the movement’s way of being and temporality persists in Spain following the square occupations, while 15M citizens continue to learn and move forward in less perceptible ways. Democracy Here and Now sheds light on a deeply relational, intersectional, and eco-social mode of democracy, and shows how 15M’s ongoing democratization practices are exemplary of similar grassroots movements around the world, broadening our understandings of what it means to be democratic in the here and now."--

    Abstract: This insightful book explores the citizen-government relation, as mediated through artificial intelligence (AI). Through a critical lens, Jérôme Duberry examines the role of AI in the relation and its implications for the quality of liberal democracy and the strength of civic capacity. In his analysis of AI, Duberry covers three key objectives: illustrating where and how AI is used in the context of citizen-government relations; highlighting the specific risks of using AI for citizen-government relations; and calling for a dedicated framework for assessing AI in these contexts. Algorithms, computing millions of calculations per second, do not pause to reflect on their operations. Developments in the accumulation of vast private datasets that are used to train automated machine learning algorithms pose new challenges for upholding these values. Social media platforms, while the key driver of today's information disorder, also afford new opportunities for organized social activism. The US and China, presumably at opposite ends of an ideological spectrum, are the main exporters of AI technology to both free and totalitarian societies.     Abstract: This anthology addresses the question of how anti-Semitism appears and is expressed in modern music. As a ‘negative guiding idea of modernity’, anti-Semitism can be found in all musical genres and is conveyed on different levels, be it through song lyrics, album covers, music videos, stage performances, through the musical form or style itself, or the ideological and structural integration of musicians into the extreme rightwing scene, all the way to the influence of entire music scenes through the anti-Semitic BDS campaign. In the essays in this book, the authors therefore give an overview of current develop-ments and provide analyses and assessments of the manifold anti-Semitic manifestations in music.
