    Kurzfassung: Western medicine has conventionally separated music, science, and religion into distinct entities, yet traditional cultures throughout the world have always viewed music as a bridge that connects and balances the physical with the spiritual to promote health and healing. As people in even the most technologically advanced nations across the globe struggle with obtaining affordable and reliable healthcare, more and more people are now turning to these ancient cultural practices of holistic and ICAM healing (integrative, complementary, and alternative medicine). Beyond the Roof of the World convincingly demonstrates the relevance of medical ethnomusicology in light of the globally spreading ICAM approaches to health and healing. Revealing the Western separation of healing from spiritual and musical practices as a culturally determined phenomenon, Dr. Benjamin D. Koen confirms their underlying unity. In a place poetically known as the Roof of the World, the culture found within the towering Pamir Mountains of Badakhshan Tajikistan serves as the paradigm of ICAM healing practices. Koen's extensive research and immersion into the Badakhshani culture provides a well-balanced "insider" perspective while maintaining an "observer's" view, as he effectively bridges the widespread gaps between ethnomusicology, health science, and music therapy.     Kurzfassung: When the colonial slave trade, and then slavery itself, were abolished early in the 19th century, the British empire brazenly set up a new system of trade using Indian rather than African laborers. The new system of "indentured" labor was supposed to be different from slavery because the indenture, or contract, was written for an initial period of five years and involved fixed wages and some specified conditions of work. From the workers' point of view, the one redeeming feature of the system was that most of their workmates spoke their language and came from the same area of India

    Kurzfassung: Over the last two centuries and indeed up to the present day, Eastern Europe's lands and peoples have conjured up a complex mixture of fascination, anxiety, promise, and peril for Germans looking eastwards. Across the generations, a varied cast of German writers, artists, philosophers, diplomats, political leaders, generals, and Nazi racial fanatics have imagined (often in very different ways) a special German mission in the East, forging a frontier myth that paralleled the American myths of the 'Wild West' and 'Manifest Destiny'. Through close analysis of German views of the East from 1800 to our own times, The German Myth of the East reveals that this crucial international relationshiphas in fact been integral to how Germans have defined (and repeatedly redefined) themselves and their own national identity. In particular, what was ultimately at stake for Germans was their own uncertain position in Europe, between East and West. Paradoxically, the East came to be viewed as both anattractive land of unlimited potential for the future and as a place undeveloped, dangerous, wild, dirty, and uncultured. Running the gamut from the messages of international understanding announced by generations of German scholars and sympathetic writers, to the violent racial utopia envisaged by the Nazis, German imaginings of the East represent a crucial, yet unfamiliar, part of modern European history, and one that remains fundamentally important today in the context of an expanded European Union.

In doing so it illuminates the central values of the period, while at the same time throwing incidental light on some of the perennial problems of human existence. - ;How should we live?     Kurzfassung: In Zeiten beschleunigten gesellschaftlichen Wandels hat das Generationsthema Konjunktur. Die wissenschaftsgeschichtliche Rekonstruktion des Generationenverständnisses seit der Antike offenbart jedoch, dass die bei Karl Mannheim angelegte Verbindung von Generationstheorie und Theorien des sozialen Wandels im Zuge der Professionalisierung der Soziologie verloren ging. Diese Studie schlägt durch eine innovative Interpretation der klassischen Vorlage die Brücke zu aktuellen Theorieentwicklungen. Unter Rückgriff auf die Analysen von Margaret S. Archer und Shmuel N. Eisenstadt stellt die Reformulierung des Generationskonzeptes den Konstitutionsprozess historischer Generationen als einen sozialen Mechanismus kulturellen Wandels und kollektiver Kreativität heraus.     Kurzfassung: Der wissenschaftliche Rassismus untermauerte seine Theorien durch eine ungeheure Knochensammlung, deren Beschaffung im 19. Jahrhundert eine regelrechte Skelettomanie auslöste. Die Jagd nach den Gebeinen der anderen missachtete jede Pietät. Sie störte die Totenruhe, raubte Leichen und schändete die Körper Verstorbener, deren Überreste zur Konstruktion typischer Rassenkörper dienten. Sie sollten Devianz gegenüber der weißen Norm demonstrieren - ihre öffentliche Zurschaustellung visualisierte und popularisierte die Rassentheorien und erlaubte den Betrachtern die Akkumulation rassistischen symbolischen Kapitals. Werner Schiffauer plädiert mit diesem Buch dagegen für einen neuen Realismus, für eine Kultur des genauen Hinsehens. Mit Blick auf die Lebensrealität in Einwanderervierteln und islamischen Gemeinden zeigt er, wie gesellschaftliche Solidarität auch in Situationen kultureller Differenz entstehen und behauptet werden kann. Es sind weniger gemeinsame Werte und Überzeugungen, die für den inneren Zusammenhalt einer Gesellschaft entscheidend sind, als vielmehr die Aufrechterhaltung von kulturellen Austauschprozessen. Mehr denn je ist daher eine kluge Politik der Differenz gefragt, die auf Anerkennung und kommunikative Einbindung setzt statt auf Eindeutigkeitszwänge. Auf diesem Boden kann Identifikation mit der Einwanderergesellschaft und gesellschaftliches Engagement entstehen und zunehmen.
