    Kurzfassung: In allen Teilbereichen der Linguistik ist derzeit ein Fokus auf Methoden zu beobachten. Selten wird jedoch eine diese einzelnen Teilbereiche integrierende Perspektive auf Methoden und v.a. auch auf Methodologie eingenommen. Der Band unternimmt vor diesem Hintergrund den Versuch, die aktuellen Diskussionen um die Methodik der Linguistik, die sich aus den unterschiedlichen Methodeninnovationen der letzten Jahrzehnte ergaben, zu bündeln. Entwicklungen wie die verstärkte Software- und Datenorientierung, die methodische Vielfalt in Projektkooperationen oder der Trend zu ethnographischen Ansätzen werden in einer Reihe methodisch sehr unterschiedlicher Studien reflektiert. Sie haben jedoch alle gemein, dass sie auf ihre Weise traditionelle Grenzen linguistischer Methodik überschreiten; mögen diese intra- oder interdisziplinärer Natur sein. Rahmende Beiträge betten diese Studien in einen Diskussionszusammenhang ein, der für eine methodologische Reintegration der linguistischen Teildisziplinen plädiert. Insofern will der Band ein Anstoß sein. Einen ersten Versuch einer solchermaßen integrierenden Diskussion dokumentiert der Band mit Respondenzen auf dieses Plädoyer einerseits und andererseits mit zwölf zusammenführenden Thesen zur aktuellen Lage der linguistischen Methodendiskussion.     Kurzfassung: Spider Web, Labyrinth, Tightrope Walk explores the shifting functions of the network as a metaphor, model, and as an epistemological framework in US American literature and culture from the 19th century until today. The book critically inquires into the literary, cultural, philosophical, and scientific rhetoric, values, and ideological underpinnings that have given rise to the network concept. Literature and culture play a major role in the ways in which networks have been imagined and how they have evolved as conceptual models. This study regards networks as historically emergent and culturally constructed formations closely tied with the development of knowledge technologies in the process of modernization as well as with an increasingly critical awareness of network technologies and infrastructures. While the rise of the network in scientific, philosophical, political and sociological discourses has received wide attention, this book contributes an important cultural and historical perspective to network theory by demonstrating how US American literature and culture have been key sites for thinking in and about networks in the past two centuries

    Kurzfassung: Wer unsere heutige Medienwirklichkeit verstehen will, kommt nicht umhin, sich mit den Technologien rund um Künstliche Intelligenz (KI) und Algorithmen auseinanderzusetzen. Die vorliegende Arbeit widmet sich dagegen "postkritisch" und "bottom-up" den gesellschaftlichen Selbstbeobachtungen im Hinblick auf die KI-Technologien im öffentlichen Diskurs und entwickelt für deren Erforschung das Programm einer Medienkulturrhetorik. Dieses Programm bringt Kulturwissenschaft und Rhetorik zusammen, um die Handlungsmöglichkeiten spätmoderner Subjekte im "KI-Zeitalter" zu ergründen, und wird im Rahmen einer empirischen Fallstudie zur massenmedialen Berichterstattung über KI und der Auseinandersetzung mit ebendieser in den sozialen Medien am Beispiel Facebook erprobt. Anspruch dieser Untersuchung ist es, sowohl einen Beitrag zur Weiterentwicklung kulturwissenschaftlicher Methodologie als auch für ein tieferes Verständnis unserer Kulturen zu leisten und dabei zugleich Anknüpfungspunkte für die (didaktische) Praxis zu bieten.

    Kurzfassung: This work studies aspects of the symbolic construction of public spaces by means of linguistic resources (i.e. linguistic landscapes or LLs) in a number of world-cities. The sociology of language leads us to this field and to study the intermingling impacts of globalization, the national principle and multiculturalism – each one conveying its own distinct linguistic markers: international codes, national languages and ethnic vernaculars. Eliezer and Miriam Ben-Rafael study the configurations of these influences, which they conceptualize as multiple globalization, in the LLs of downtowns, residential quarters, and marginal neighborhoods of a number of world-cities. They ask how far worldwide codes of communication gain preeminence, national languages are marginalized and ethnic vernaculars impactful. They conclude by suggesting a paradigm of multiple globalizations

    Kurzfassung: This volume in honour of Stephen Ellis is a follow-up to the public presentation of his book on the history of organised crime in Nigeria This Present Darkness (Hurst, 2016) at the University of Lagos, Nigeria on 28 October 2016. In addition to four papers, and a book review presented at this colloquium, other contributions about crime in Nigeria have been added, written by Nigerian authors. In July 2015 Stephen died, and he has worked on This Present Darkness almost to his last moments, as a senior researcher of the African Studies Centre in Leiden. This book also contains a tribute to his life and work written by his wife and scholar Gerrie ter Haar.     Kurzfassung: In her groundbreaking investigation from the perspective of the aesthetics of religion, Isabel Laack explores the religion and art of writing of the pre-Hispanic Aztecs of Mexico. Inspired by postcolonial approaches, she reveals Eurocentric biases in academic representations of Aztec cosmovision, ontology, epistemology, ritual, aesthetics, and the writing system to provide a powerful interpretation of the Nahua sense of reality. Laack transcends the concept of “sacred scripture” traditionally employed in religions studies in order to reconstruct the Indigenous semiotic theory and to reveal how Aztec pictography can express complex aspects of embodied meaning.     Kurzfassung: Every culture knows the phenomenon of monsters, terrifying creatures that represent complete alterity and challenge every basic notion of self and identity within a cultural paradigm. In Latin and Greek culture, the monster was created as a marvel, appearing as something which, like transgression itself, did not belong to the assumed natural order of things. Therefore, it could only be created by a divinity responsible for its creation, composition, goals and stability, but it was triggered by some in- or non-human action performed by humans. The identification of something as monstrous denotes its place outside and beyond social norms and values. The monster-evoking transgression is most often indistinguishable from reactions to the experience of otherness, merging the limits of humanity with the limits of a given culture. The topic entails a large intersection among the cultural domains of law, literature, philosophy, anthropology, and technology. Monstrosity has indeed become a necessary condition of our existence in the 21st century: it serves as a representation of change itself. In the process of analysis there are three theoretical approaches: psychoanalytical, representational, ontological. The volume therefore aims at examining the concept of monstrosity from three main perspectives: technophobic, xenophobic, superdiversity. Today's globalized world is shaped in the unprecedented phenomenon of international migration. The resistance to this phenomenon causes the demonization of the Other, seen as the antagonist and the monster. The monster becomes therefore the ethnic Other, the alien. To reach this new perspective on monstrosity we must start by examining the many facets of monstrosity, also diachronically: from the philological origin of the term to the Roman and classical viewpoint, from the Renaissance medical perspective to the religious background, from the new filmic exploitations in the 20th and 21st centuries to the very recent ethnological and anthropological points of view, to the latest technological perspective , dealing with artificial intelligence

    Kurzfassung: Das Buch geht empirisch der Frage nach, worin sich sprachstarke und sprachschwache Kinder beim Schreiben unterscheiden. Die Untersuchung erweitert den Fokus damit über das wissenschaftlich vertieft untersuchte Lernalter als ausschlaggebenden Faktor für die interindividuelle Variation hinaus auf die globale Sprachkompetenz. Vor dem Hintergrund eines dynamischen Sprachansatzes untersucht die Studie das Schreiben als sprachliches Handeln und legt als Untersuchungskorpus nicht nur die Kindertexte als Ergebnis des Schreibens, sondern auch den Schreibprozess sowie die metasprachliche Kompetenz der Kinder zugrunde. Bei der Datenerhebung und Auswertung kamen sowohl standardisierte Sprachstandsmessungen, Schreibanlässe für das freie Schreiben, psychologische Tests sowie Fragebögen zum Einsatz. Die Schreibprozesse wurden durch Keystroke Logging erhoben, wodurch sämtliche Revisionen sowie der zeitliche Verlauf des Schreibens auf dem PC aufgezeichnet wurden. Mit der Kombination der verschiedenen Verfahren zeigt die Studie damit auch methodisch neue Zugänge zur Erforschung der Schriftsprachkompetenz auf

    Kurzfassung: Das Studienbuch ist ein grundlegender Beitrag zur Kognitionswissenschaft und führt in die nordamerikanisch geprägte kognitive Semantik unter Bezugnahme auf kognitiv-anthropologische Aspekte ein. Diese folgen den historischen Anfängen zur Frage nach dem Einfluss der Sprache auf die Kognition, beginnend mit Wilhelm von Humboldts Ansichten bis hin zu aktuellen Neo-Whorfian Ansätzen zur sprachlichen Relativität. Das Studienbuch vereint verkörperungs- und gestalttheoretische Ansätze, um die vielschichtige Interaktion von Sprache und Kognition anhand der Raumlinguistik und Raumkognition exemplarisch darzustellen. Als Ausgangspunkt dient die Adaption gestalttheoretischer Gesetze der visuellen Wahrnehmung im unmittelbaren Raum von Objektzuschreibungen und der Orientierung im mittelbaren Raum und damit in der aktuellen Umwelt. Mit seinem interdisziplinären Ansatz schließt das Studienbuch ein Desiderat in der deutschsprachigen Forschungslandschaft.     Kurzfassung: "Das Handbuch Text und Gespräch bietet einen Überblick über zentrale Befunde und aktuell relevante Fragestellungen der Text- und Gesprächslinguistik vor dem Hintergrund einer nun über 40-jährigen Forschungstradition. Im Zentrum steht dabei die Frage, in welcher Weise in und mit Texten und Gesprächen Wissen konstituiert, repräsentiert, diskursiv durchgesetzt und vermittelt wird. Dieser Fokus dient unter anderem der Reflexion der Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede zwischen geschriebenen und gesprochenen Texten. Eher allgemeine Überblicksartikel zu Oralität und Literalität, zu Text und Gespräch, zu Sprechen/Hören und Lesen/Schreiben werden ergänzt durch Perspektiven auf Textverständlichkeit und Text-Bild-Zusammenhänge. Eine Reihe von Beiträgen spürt dem Zusammenhang von Wissen(svermittlung) und Texten/Gesprächen in verschiedenen konkreten Domänen nach (z.B. in Schule, Ausbildung, Wissenschaft, Politik, Organisationen, den helping professions oder der Technischen Dokumentation). Ein weiterer Fokus wird schliesslich auf Wissenskonflikte gelegt, d.h. auf Phänomene wie Streit, Missverstehen, Normenkonflikte und die Kommunikation von Nichtwissen. Das Handbuch bietet damit nicht nur Überblick, sondern auch Orientierung über wesentliche Themen einer die Wissensgesellschaft reflektierenden Text- und Gesprächslinguistik."--

    Kurzfassung: This book explores the spatial, material, and affective dimensions of solitude in the late medieval and early modern periods, a hitherto largely neglected topic. Its focus is on the dynamic qualities of “space” and “place”, which are here understood as being shaped, structured, and imbued with meaning through both social and discursive solitary practices such as reading, writing, studying, meditating, and praying. Individual chapters investigate the imageries and imaginaries of outdoor and indoor spaces and places associated with solitude and its practices and examine the ways in which the space of solitude was conceived of, imagined, and represented in the arts and in literature, from about 1300 to about 1800.     Kurzfassung: Von "Völkern" und "ihren" Sprachen und Kulturen redet die Wissenschaft längst nicht mehr. Aber immer noch gelten Sprachen und Kulturen als Zeugen quasi-ethnischer Gemeinschaft und "Identität". Der Band zeigt in acht Fallstudien und einer Einleitung, dass und wie Sprachen und Kulturen Anknüpfungspunkte für quasi-ethnische Identifikationen bieten, aber ihre Räume unabhängig von ethnischen Grenzen entfalten. Sprachen ohne Volk (Mittellatein, Kaukasisch-Albanisch, Phönizisch in Kilikien); ethnische Befrachtung von Sprache (theoretisch in der japanischen Volkskunde, praktisch in der Sprachreform Atatürks); falsche ethnische Identifizierung von Kulturen (Zypern und Kilikien in der Bronze- und Eisenzeit), Sprachwandelprozessen (öffentliche Sprache unter Echnaton: politisch induzierter Sprachwandel) und Onomastik (deutsche Ortsnamen im Trentino: nicht zwingend Besiedlungsspur). Die Einleitung bietet eine systematische Diskussion der Begriffe Sprachgemeinschaft, Identität, Ethnizität und Kultur. Das Buch ist ein unentbehrliches Werkzeug für (Sozio-)Linguisten, Philologen, Archäologen und Ethnologen und ein nützliches Hilfsmittel für Sozialpsychologen und Kulturphilosophen.

    Kurzfassung: The Epic of Sumanguru Kante contains the Bamana text and English translation of griot Abdoulaye Sako's oral narrative of the life of Sumanguru, recorded in 1997 in Koulikoro (Mali), together with explanatory notes, a scholarly introduction, and sections on the Bamana language and musical accompaniment. Sumanguru is a familiar figure within Manding epic oral traditions about ancient Mali. But while these narratives generally focus on Sunjata Keita, Sako's oral poem is rare in according Sumanguru the central role. In so doing he includes hitherto undocumented episodes relating to Sumanguru's life and role as the ruler of Soso, the little known state said to have flourished in the western Sudan between the fall of ancient Ghana and rise of ancient Mali

    Kurzfassung: In his book Selected Issues in the Modern Intercultural Contacts between Arabic and Hebrew Cultures, Mahmoud Kayyal examines the modern intercultural contacts between Arabic and Hebrew cultures from postcolonial perspectives. An aggressive relationship exists between the two cultures that stems from the combination of Hebrew culture's representation of neo-colonial Western culture and the majority-minority relations between Jews and Arabs within Israel. By focusing on specific issues in these intercultural contacts, especially translation activity between the two languages, Hebrew linguistic interference in the Palestinian literature, and Hebrew writings of Palestinian authors, Kayyal reveals the ongoing struggle between the Zionist orientation and the subversive forces that attempt to undermine the Zionist narrative, and to preserve the Palestinian narrative

Die Untersuchung geht auf der Basis von 40 Stunden Sendematerial einer bekannten deutschen Kochsendung der Frage nach, mittels welcher verbalen sowie körperlich-visuellen Verfahren die Beteiligten die mediale Gattung situativ als Infotainment hervorbringen. Zu diesem Zweck wird rekonstruiert, wie die Interagierenden die für die Sendung konstitutiven Aktivitäten "Informieren", "Belehren" und "Bewerten" durchführen, um den Anforderungen der Gattung im Spannungsfeld von Informationsvermittlung und Entertainment zu begegnen. Die Untersuchung leistet so einen Beitrag zur multimodalen Fundierung einer linguistischen Analyse von konversationellen Aktivitäten und zeigt Perspektiven für eine Weiterentwicklung einer gesprächsanalytisch arbeitenden Medienlinguistik auf"--

    Kurzfassung: "Literacy and Second Language Learning for the Linguistic Integration of Adult Migrants (LASLLIAM)" is a new reference guide of the Council of Europe. It was developed by a group of experts and the Council of Europe Education Department to support high-quality learning environments for non- and low-literate migrants. Language skills foster, among others, social inclusion, and access to education and employment. Within this context, non-literate or low-literate migrants have specific educational needs, as they must learn a second language while either learning to read and write for the first time or developing basic literacy competences in an alphabet or writing system sometimes different from the one they will have learned initially. When it comes to language or knowledge of society courses, these needs are rarely taken into consideration, and this group of migrants is rarely offered a sufficient number of hours to reach the language level required. This is why LASLLIAM has been conceived: it aims at supporting language educators, curriculum designers and language policymakers in their endeavour to design, implement, evaluate and improve curricula tailored toward the specific needs of the target learners.

    Kurzfassung: Oral Poetics has produced insights that are relevant not only for the study of oral traditions, but also for our general understanding of language and cognition. Cognitive Science has developed theories with great potential for research on poetics and oral performance. This book explores how connections between the two disciplines can lead to a Cognitive Oral Poetics, a new field for the study of oral poetry as a window to the mind.
