Abstract: Music, the market, and the marvellous" examines 'féerie', the French fairy play, in the last third of the nineteenth century. It is among the first book-length studies on the genre, the first in a language other than French, and the first from a musicological perspective. Sabbatini demonstrates that, contrary to conventional wisdom, 'féerie' was still thriving during the fin de siècle, giving rise to innovations such as composerly 'féerie' and scientific 'féerie'. The plays, the theatre industry, and urban geography are discussed together, as befits a commercial genre where the marvellous was shaped by the market. Recovering this forgotten - but once hugely influential - repertoire provides an occasion to rethink generic taxonomies of Parisian theatre and the ontology of nineteenth-century 'popular' theatre

Abstract: "Katharine Sykes examines a new type of household to emerge in early medieval England: the monastic household. Reproducing through education and training, rather than biological means, monastic households introduce new ideas of spiritual, non-biological reproduction to their royal and secular counterparts."

Abstract: A number of scholars within the social sciences and the humanities have elaborated on the cultural and psychological dimensions of living through social, economic and political crises. Still, developments during the last decade have created an awareness that something fundamental of the human condition is at stake, especially for the young generation growing up today, with a devastating environmental crisis, globalization, large scale migration, the impact of digitalization and so forth. The consequence has been increased polarization between nations, communities, and people, where the dialogue for human understanding seems to vanish. The basic rationale underlying this book is that education is a key social system where learning to take different perspectives, to stimulate dialogue and intersubjectivity are fundamental for social and cultural development. We bring together scholars from North-America and Europe, but with relevance on a global scale. The four sections in the book cover theoretical explorations referring to the power and generativity of the writings of the Norwegian scholar Ragnar Rommetveit (section 1), diverse chapters and examples on the societal conditions for dialogue and the role of education (section 2), empirical illustration on the role of digital technologies (section 3), and micro-analytical studies of learning dialogues at home, in kindergarten and school (section 4).

Abstract: Labour Law Utopias: Post-Growth and Post-Productive Work Approaches engages with new socioeconomic ideas, or utopias, that look beyond the current growth-driven competitive market economy. Building on critiques of economic growth and the limits of the logic of human productivity and competitivity for workers and the planet, it explores alternative approaches and what they mean for work in general and labour law in particular. The concept of post-growth is used to rethink the purpose of the economy by looking beyond merely increasing wealth, consumption, and production. Post-productive work is introduced to question the centrality of economically productive work in labour law. The chapters in this book adopt a forward-looking approach and discuss whether and how labour law can contribute to emancipation from the constraints of growth and productivity by revisiting the value, organization, and impact of work on people and the environment

Abstract: Fair and equitable benefit-sharing is a diffuse legal phenomenon in international law that remains perplexing with regard to its general nature, extent, content, and implications. The continued proliferation of benefit-sharing clauses in international law can in effect be explained by its intuitive appeal as an optimistic frame. In principle, it serves to recognize, encourage, and reward in innovative ways sustainable human relations with the environment, by focusing on equity issues arising from the most intractable challenges of our time (biodiversity loss, climate change, poverty, global epidemics). Empirical evidence, however, indicates that in practice benefit-sharing rarely achieves its stated fairness and equity objectives, and actually ends up entrenching or worsening inequitable relationships, with little or no benefit for the environment. Instead of focusing on fair and equitable benefit-sharing in specific areas of international law separately, this book assesses the phenomenon both from a general international law perspective and through a comparative analysis across international environmental law, international human rights law, international health law, and the law of the sea. This analysis reveals an opportunity to advance the interpretation and practice of fairness and equity in benefit-sharing through a mutually supportive interpretation of international biodiversity law and international human rights law

Abstract: This book is a sociocultural history of young people’s sexuality in Britain from the 1960s to the 1990s, using the Brook Advisory Centre (Brook) as a case study. The book examines how and why cultural and social norms about young people’s sexuality changed over a period that has traditionally been associated with growing ‘permissiveness’ and sexual liberation. It does so by focusing on a pioneering sexual health charity operating on the cusp of voluntary and state-financed sectors. From the opening of its first centre in London—followed by other centres including Birmingham (1966), Bristol (1968), and Edinburgh (1968)—to the present day, Brook has been a major provider of contraceptive advice and sexual counselling to unmarried people and teenagers. Brook pioneered an initiative that would form the primary model for the provision of advice on contraception for teenagers in Britain. To this day, the charity remains a key player in sexual health services. Although Brook has provoked fierce opposition and triggered recurrent public debates on teenage sexuality, little is known of its history. As a non-governmental organization, Brook offers a fascinating case study to explore the relationship between changing sexual cultures, sexual politics, and young people’s sexual experiences, intimacy, and subjectivities. Drawing on a wide range of archived and published materials, as well as oral history interviews conducted by the author, this book provides a substantial and original contribution to scholarship on the forging of the modern sexual subject

Abstract: The problem of evil has long perplexed traditional theists: why do terrible events, such as crimes, wars, and natural disasters, occur in a world believed to be created by an omnipotent and wholly good God? The Problem of Evil for Atheists offers a fresh perspective that seeks to transform the perennial philosophical debate on this matter. This book contends that the problem of evil surpasses its conventional understanding, not only impacting traditional theists but also posing a challenge for atheists and other ‘non-theists’, including pantheists, axiarchists, and followers of Eastern religious traditions. Moreover, the book posits that traditional theists, who typically embrace some form of supernaturalism, are better equipped to address the problem than naturalist atheists/non-theists because the only potentially successful response requires supernaturalism. Conversely, the book suggests that if atheists/non-theists can develop a successful naturalist response, traditional theists can also adopt it. Thus, it concludes that traditional theists are better positioned than atheists/non-theists to grapple with the problem—an unexpected assertion, given that the problem of evil is normally viewed as an argument against traditional theism and in favour of atheism/non-theism. The Problem of Evil for Atheists presents a comprehensive defence of a fundamentally new approach to tackling the age-old philosophical conundrum. By challenging the conventional perspective, it endeavours to reshape our understanding and interpretation of evil in a profound manner

Abstract: The purpose of this book is to offer a comprehensive analysis of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA), a treaty concluded between the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom (UK) on Christmas Eve 2020, and which officially entered into force on 1 May 2021. The book builds on a number of earlier volumes on the law and politics of Brexit, but goes beyond them by specifically considering in greater depth those policy areas of EU-UK cooperation which are included in the TCA: ie free movement of goods, customs, rules of origin, services, investment, public procurement, capital movement, intellectual property, transport, aviation, fisheries, health, energy, cyber, and regulatory cooperation, and UK participation in EU programmes. This book, however, does not provide only a technical legal analysis of core provisions of the TCA. Rather, consistent with the ethos of all earlier volumes, it takes an interdisciplinary and policy perspective. On the one hand, it contextualizes the TCA in the political and economic reality in which the treaty operates. On the other hand, it explores the TCA for what it is, but without assuming that this must be the inevitable landing zone of EU-UK cooperation. As such, the book reflects on what the possible prospects to further develop EU-UK relations may be going forward in light of new global, national, and local developments, including the war in Ukraine, a growing public opinion shift against Brexit, and the recent approval of the Windsor Framework defusing EU-UK tensions over Northern Ireland

Abstract: This book explores the deep contestations of the liberal script in the contemporary United States from a variety of perspectives. The US is today confronted with a crisis of democracy because of a profound ideological and affective polarization. The book argues that Donald Trump’s grip on the Republican Party is a symptom as well as a catalyst rather than the cause of the contemporary contestations of the liberal script in the US. To discern their major drivers from a longue durée perspective, each chapter takes a step back asking: How can we best describe the current contestations of the liberal script in the US, exploring the extent to which the US is unique in comparison to other liberal democracies facing similar contestations? What are the main drivers and root causes that explain the current contestations and the crisis of American democracy they may precipitate? What have been and what are the likely consequences for the future of American democracy? The various authors discuss – among other topics - the US public sphere, populism, polarization, the Supreme Court, Christian evangelicalism, African-American contestations, as well as the consequences of the deep contestations for US foreign policy

Abstract: The margins of early modern bibles are filled with explanatory notes that have long been denounced as seditious, traitorous, and dangerous. Little attention has been paid to the actual use of these margins by their contemporary readership. Across chapters that attend to distinct demographics of readers — editors, clerical, Catholic, literary — Horbury demonstrates the diverse reading practices of those who pursued the margins of the early modern Bible. From William Tyndale's New Testament to the impact of the King James, Reading the Margins of the Early Modern Bible reconceptualises our understanding of how the Bible was read in early modern England and presents a transformative investigation into the role that margins played in reading scripture

Abstract: Babies in Groups examines the consequences for science, for childcare policy, and for adult psychotherapy, of findings that young babies capably enjoy participating in groups. The authors’ research on preverbal infants’ capacities for group-communication in all-baby trios and quartets opens up new ways of imagining human development as fundamentally group-based. Babies in Groups highlights the changes a group-based vision of infancy brings to early child education and care by documenting the transformative consequences of introducing group-based practices into a high-quality childcare service in rural Australia. The book also examines the ways in which the belief that one-to-one infant-adult ‘attachments’ grounds human development unnecessarily narrows understanding of human potential, and slants scientific research. This examination culminates by showing how ignoring group contexts in many clinical traditions can distort descriptions of what happens in therapy, producing such unintended consequences as ‘mother-blaming’ for the future problems an infant may experience as she or he grows up

Abstract: Prompted both by past policies and recent developments concerning immigration around the world that centre on race, ethnicity, religion, and other identities, 'Immigration and Discrimination' explores what bases states are morally permitted to use for their admission decisions and policies, and why. Many scholars appeal to the terminology and concept of wrongful discrimination when discussing identity-based immigration decisions, but there has been little to no effort dedicated to examining whether the idea of wrongful discrimination - traditionally applied to interactions among people within a state - is applicable at the global level, or to interactions among people in different states.

Abstract: "From the rise of populist leaders and the threat of democratic backsliding to culture wars, the rejection of open markets and the return of great power competition, the backlash against the political, economic, and social status quo is increasingly labeled "illiberal." Yet, despite the increasing importance of these phenomena, scholars still lack a firm grasp on "illiberalism" as a conceptual tool for understanding contemporary trends. The Oxford Handbook of Illiberalism addresses this gap by establishing a theoretical foundation for the study of illiberalism and showcasing state-of-the-art research on this phenomenon in its varied scripts-political, economic, cultural, geopolitical, and civilizational. Bringing together the expertise of dozens of scholars, the Oxford Handbook of Illiberalism offers a thorough overview that characterizes the current state of the field and charts a path forward for future scholarship on this critical and quicky developing concept. Abstract: Gender in Modern India brings together pioneering research on a range of themes including social reforms, caste, and contestations; Adivasis, patriarchy, and colonialism; capitalism, political economy, and labour; masculinity and sexuality; health, medical care, and institution building; culture and identity; and migration and its new dynamics.Commissioned in remembrance of the prolific social historian Biswamoy Pati, this volume examines the gender question through a multilayered and multi-dimensional frame in which interdisciplinarity and intersectionality play an important role. Using case studies on gender from diverse geographies—east, west, north, south, and northeast; community locations—Hindu, Muslim, and Christian; and marginalized socio-economic or ethnic habitations such as those of Dalits and Adivasis, the contributors highlight the complexities and diversities of women's negotiations of patriarchies in varied social, ethnic, and community contexts.Collectively, the chapters in this volume focus on three related and overlapping settings—colonial, colonial and postcolonial continuum, and postcolonial. They delineate the multiple lives of gender by focusing on its intersections with other markers of difference including race, class, caste, sexuality, culture, ethnicity, region, and occupation, thereby questioning stereotypes, challenging dated notions and interpretations of gender, and demonstrating the ubiquity of patriarchy

Abstract: After the fall of military and communist dictatorships at the end of the 1980s, Latin American and Eastern European countries had to reckon with atrocities perpetrated by these Cold War regimes. Judges, prosecutors, and human rights campaigners across the two regions constructed novel readings of international criminal law to fight impunity and realize justice for gross human rights violations. Justice and Memory after Dictatorship: Latin America, Central Eastern Europe and the Fragmentation of International Criminal Law provides a groundbreaking socio-historical account of the global transformation of international criminal law from these two semi-peripheries of the world system. Based on ethnographic observation and analyses of jurisprudence, Raluca Grosescu dissects the narratives that were fundamentally shaped by the relationship of law and politics. Using paradigmatic cases and personal interviews with lawyers and judicial officials from Latin America and Eastern Europe, Grosescu uncovers how legal actors and organizations were instrumental in questioning an international order that marginalized the political violence that had unfolded in the two regions during the Cold War.

This analysis reveals an opportunity to advance the interpretation and practice of fairness and equity in benefit-sharing through a mutually supportive interpretation of international biodiversity law and international human rights law.

Abstract: A common religious practice in Buddhist Thailand is asking "holy things" for help in return for an offering. These holy things include local spirits, Hindu gods, and famous Buddha images, which Thai people worship all in the same way. Some people, and even Thai Buddhists themselves, have argued that this is "syncretism"--a mixture of religions. Holy Things shows that what appears to be syncretism is actually an illusion. The worship of "holy things" is not a mixture of different religions, but the category of "holy things" is a mixture of different ways of talking about religion.

Abstract: This book explores a topic that historians of philosophy have so far neglected almost completely: debates about the morality of slavery in eighteenth-century North America and Europe. Author Julia Jorati pays particular attention to the role that race plays in these debates. Each of the five chapters covers intriguing and philosophically important texts about slavery and race from a specific geographic region: North America, Scotland, England, France, and lastly, the Netherlands and Germany. The book--and a companion volume also by Jorati on slavery and race in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries--will serve as a resource for scholars, instructors, and students of philosophy and neighboring disciplines.

Abstract: In "Repression in the Digital Age", Anita R. Gohdes provides an in-depth look into the relationship between digital technologies and state violence. Drawing on original data, Gohdes argues that mass access to the Internet presents governments who fear for their political survival with a set of response options, which in turn support different forms of violence by state forces. As digital communication has become a bedrock of modern opposition and protest movements, Repression in the Digital Age breaks new ground in examining state repression in the information age.

Abstract: "This book offers the first full account of Harriet Tubman's Civil War service and the Combahee River Raid. It details how Tubman commanded a ring of spies, scouts, and pilots and participated in military expeditions behind Confederate lines. It also recounts the story of enslaved families living in bondage and fighting for their freedom, using their own distinct and individual voices. The book uses more than 175 US Civil War pension files of the regiments of Second South Carolina Volunteers, including Tubman's. It is based on original documentation and written by a descendent of the enslaved men and women who fought in it, and in the process liberated themselves"--

Abstract: In The Afterlife of Race, Lionel McPherson demystifies the Western concept of "race" and reframes race ideology in America as a caste device that sponsors absurd pretexts for inherited slavery, enforced segregation, and the wilful nonrepair of historical injustice. This reframing paves the way for an anti-caste vision of social equality that emphasizes the moral importance of Black American national specificity--not general antiracism, identity politics, or diversity "of color." The result is a non-racial, non-exclusionary account of Black political solidarity that would welcome everyone who supports reparative justice for Black American "blacks" as descendants of American slavery.
Abstract: "In this groundbreaking fusion of philosophy and color-conscious politics, Lionel K. McPherson enlists sweeping historical and empirical evidence to challenge fascination with the race concept. His lively, incisive analysis illuminates why social lineage matters far more than any "race" thing ever could, and why race ideology-rhetoric is more a distraction from gross injustice than a primary source. The Western label "black" was merely a figurative description for African peoples and African ancestry. The idea of continental races came later-with philosophers, theologians, and eventually scientists adding some important but elusive racial factor to visible continental ancestry. McPherson argues that the race concept's main business was to sponsor absurd pretexts for Western slavery and colonialism, and their active legacies of nonrepair. Rejecting endless debate about the possible nature of race, he unpacks how color categories in America are a caste device that marked Europe-identified (white) freedom versus Africa-identified (black) enslavement. This caste reframing paves the way for a de-raced account of Black American national specificity and political solidarity, distinct from flat blackness. The Afterlife of Race concludes with a vision of tangible justice and social equality for descendants of American slavery: color aside, Americans of conscience would finally prioritize dismantling their country's foundational caste division, with its entrenched wealth and well-being chasm between White and Black America"--

Abstract: "This book takes a hard and unflinching look at the multitude of roles and functions played by universality in international legal discourses as well as its associated narratives of progress and virtues. In doing so, it provides a critical appraisal of the mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion that come with international law and its universalist discursive strategies. This requires that universality is not reduced to the question of the geographical outreach of international law, but instead, is understood in terms of boundaries. This also entails examining how the idea of universality - which does not lend itself to a translation in all languages - was developed in some of the dominant vernaculars of international law - primarily English and French - before being universalised and imposed upon international lawyers from all traditions. This simultaneously offers an opportunity to revisit the ideologies that constitute the identity of international lawyers today, as well as the socialisation, reproduction and legal educational processes which they undergo to become international lawyers. Special attention is paid to the place which Europe has secured for itself by virtue of the progress and historical narratives built around the idea of universality"--

Abstract: This handbook represents a collective exploration of the emerging field of applied philosophy of language. The volume covers a broad range of areas where philosophy engages with linguistic aspects of our social world, including such hot topics as dehumanizing speech, dogwhistles, taboo language, pornography, appropriation, implicit bias, speech acts, and the ethics of communication. An international line-up of contributors adopt a variety of approaches and methods in their investigation of these linguistic phenomena, drawing on linguistics and the human and social sciences as well as on different philosophical subdisciplines. The aim is to map out fruitful areas of research and to stimulate discussion with thought-provoking essays by leading and emerging philosophers.

Abstract: Robert Burns (1759-96) was a producer of lyrical verse, satirical poetry, in English and Scots, a song-writer and song-collector, a writer of bawdry, journals, commonplace books and correspondence. Sculpting his own image, his untutored rusticity was a sincere persona as much as it was not entirely accurate. Burns was an antiquarian, national patriot, pioneer of what today we would call 'folk culture', and a man of the Enlightenment and Romanticism. This handbook considers Burns's reception in his own time and beyond, extending to his iconic status as a world-writer.

Abstract: "An abstract is a short description of your longer piece of work and is used as a free layer of content discoverable online. An abstract should not attempt to summarise the whole work as it is also there to show readers whether or not reading further is warranted. It is used to allow people searching on the internet to see that they have encountered a worthwhile 'hit'. This will encourage them to read further by clicking through to the work in full"--
Abstract: Shifts across the corpus of international law have brought the international legal system into a closer alignment with the interests of the individual. This has led to a great and growing interest in the roles and status of individuals in international law, and provided new impulses for debate. The Individual in International Law is an exploration of what is described as the humanisation of international law. It examines how international law has accommodated individuals, and how individual status, rights, and obligations have become denser and more important in the international legal system. Split into two parts, the book analyses the humanisation of international law in different historical periods and from various theoretical perspectives. The first part focuses on the historical evolution of international law, exploring how the interests of individuals have shaped the development of the legal system from antiquity to 1945, providing a counterpoint to State-centric readings of international law's history. The second part contains theoretical debates, critical approaches, and interdisciplinary investigations, offering perspectives from ius positivism and ius naturalism, Marxism, TWAIL, feminism, global law, global constitutionalism, law and economics, and legal anthropology. The book aims to stimulate further research on the humanisation and dehumanisation of new fields ranging from the ius contra bellum to climate law. The editors' introduction and conclusion frame the contributions, draw together their findings, and address critiques comprehensively. Written by a team of acknowledged experts in their fields, this volume elucidates how the interests, rights, obligations, and responsibilities of individuals have shaped international norms and regimes, and suggests how a reoriented transformative humanism can inform and develop international law in an era of profound ideological, ecological, and technical challenge.
