    Abstract: Die zahlreichen Schicksale der Verfolgten des Nationalsozialismus sind faktenreich belegt, stehen aber im Spannungsfeld zur regionalen Erinnerungskultur nach 1945. Was bedeuten diese Spannungen heute? Maria Anna Willer untersucht Strukturen und Prozesse der Ausgrenzung in der Face-to-Face-Gesellschaft eines Dorfes am bayrischen Alpenrand zur Zeit der NS-Herrschaft und beleuchtet dessen Erinnerungskultur. In Anlehnung an Foucault beschreibt sie im Modell eines »Dispositivs der NS-Verfolgung« die engmaschigen Strukturen der Kontrolle und Überwachung sowie Widerstand und Hilfeleistungen als Kategorien der NS-Diktatur auf dem Dorf. Es zeigt sich: Nach 1945 ist eine Kontinuität der Ausgrenzung erkennbar, wenn die Erinnerung an Opfer der NS-Verfolgung verdrängt wird.

At a time of intensified interest in issues of race and racism, the burgeoning influence of corporations like AncestryDNA and 23andMe has sparked debates about the commodification of identity, the antiracist potential of genetic science, and the promises and pitfalls of using DNA as a source of 'objective' knowledge about the past. This book engages these debates by looking at the ways genomic ancestry testing has been used in Brazil and the United States to address the histories and legacies of slavery, from personal genealogical projects to collective racial politics.

    Abstract: Dieser Band enthält fünf Abhandlungen zur Geschichte, ethnologischen Konnotation, ästhetischen Hochbewertung, ökonomischen Veränderung und Neuentdeckung von traditioneller beziehungsweise vernakularer ruraler Architektur. Die Beiträge behandeln historische Siedlungsgebiete mit deutschsprachigen Minderheiten im ostmitteleuropäischen und osteuropäischen Raum. Es wird versucht nachzuzeichnen, auf welche Weise die historisch gebauten Bauern-, Hirten- oder Fischerhäuser ausgestattet wurden, wo und warum sie in der akademischen Bildungssphäre einen ästhetischen und repräsentativen Wert zugesprochen erhielten, wie ihre Verdrängung während der Epoche des Sozialismus vor sich ging und wann sie unter neuen wirtschaftlichen und lebensweltlichen Prämissen als temporäre oder auch dauerhafte Wohngebäude neu entdeckt wurden. Die Wiederentdeckung bzw. Neubelebung erfolgte und erfolgt aktuell unter verschiedenen Aspekten. Neben das Motiv der Erhaltung des Erbes der Minderheitenkulturen und seiner nichtmusealen Identitätspräsentation treten nun die Nachhaltigkeitseffekte der Bauweise mit lokal-/regionaltypischen Materialien und Handwerkstechniken (etwa Holzbauweise) sowie eine im Computerzeitalter neugewonnene Attraktivität des ländlich-ruhigen Wohnens in den Vordergrund.     Abstract: Im Anschluss an bisherige Forschungen zu Heimatzeitschriften der Deutschen in und aus dem östlichen Europa am IVDE Freiburg rückten in den letzten Jahren Fragestellungen zu ihrer visuellen Gestaltung ins Blickfeld. Erste Untersuchungen waren der Gestaltung von Titelseiten, medienspezifischen Werbeanzeigen oder beteiligten Akteuren gewidmet. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes nähern sich dieser Thematik an und ergänzen bisherige Ergebnisse mit neuen Aspekten. Neben Überlegungen zu Brüchen und Kontinuitäten bei der visuellen Konstruktion von Periodika, die an Vorgängerzeitschriften in den Herkunftsgebieten anknüpften, werden Bildmotive, Bild-Text-Bezüge und unterschiedliche Deutungskontexte bei Kunstwerken und Fotografien diskutiert. Weitere Beiträge erörtern ausgewählte Gesichtspunkte der Geschichte der Fotografie in den Ländern der Böhmischen Krone und der Bildmotive in der Amateurfotografie vor 1945 sowie die Reproduktion solcher Aufnahmen in Heimatzeitschriften nach 1945. Auch Fragen der frühen fotografischen Reportage in den 1950er-Jahren und des fotografischen Blickes von Heimatreisenden werden beleuchtet.     Abstract: Venedig und sein Karneval waren in der Vormoderne für Reisende aus ganz Europa ein großer Anziehungspunkt. Nach dem Untergang der Republik 1797 verlor das Fest allerdings an Bedeutung. Erst am Ende der 1970er-Jahre kam es zu einer dauerhaften und öffentlichkeitswirksamen Wiederbelebung dieser Veranstaltung. Die vorliegende Studie rekonstruiert die Geschichte des venezianischen Karnevals und beleuchtet dabei insbesondere die jüngsten Entwicklungstendenzen. Auf der Grundlage eines mehrjährigen Beobachtungsprozesses wird die Relevanz des Festes für die Stadtbewohner thematisiert, seine touristische Vermarktung beschrieben sowie seine Inszenierung als (post)modernes Event analysiert.

    Abstract: ›Gastarbeit‹ ist keine abgeschlossene Episode der deutschen Migrationsgeschichte, sondern wirkt bis heute nach. In ihrer rassismustheoretischen Analyse entwickelt Veronika Kourabas die heuristischen Konzepte Ge-Brauch und Ver-Brauch, um Rassismus als paradoxes Ungleichheitsverhältnis zu erfassen. ›Gastarbeit‹ wird dadurch als Ge-Brauchsverhältnis greifbar, das Migrationsandere ökonomisch einbezieht, aber über rassistisch vermittelte Diskurse zugleich ausschließt. Mit diesen Ansätzen sowie der Rekonstruktion widerständiger Praktiken wird nicht nur die Analyse und Kritik vergangener, sondern auch gegenwärtig dominanter Diskurse über Flucht und Migration eröffnet.

    Abstract: Im Jahr 1970 startete der Deutsche Sportbund eine großangelegte Werbekampagne für den Freizeitsport. Unter dem Motto „Trimm Dich durch Sport“ sollten die Bundesbürger zu mehr Bewegung angeregt werden. Den Hintergrund für diese Initiative bildeten zeitgenössische Diskurse um eine sinnvolle Freizeitgestaltung und den allgemeinen Gesundheitszustand in der Bevölkerung. Welche Maßnahmen wurden damals ergriffen, um die Vielsitzer mit ihren Wohlstandsbäuchen zum Sporttreiben zu animieren? Mit welchen Werten wurde ein solcher Sport für alle von nun an verbunden? Im Zusammenspiel unterschiedlicher Quellengruppen wird in der vorliegenden Studie der Versuch unternommen, diese einst von großer medialer Aufmerksamkeit begleitete Aktion zu rekonstruieren und in ihrer Bedeutung für die Entwicklung des Freizeitsports in der 2. Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts zu erfassen.

    Abstract: Licia do Prado Valladares's classic anthropological study of Brazil's vast, densely populated urban living environments reveals how the idea of the favela became an internationally establishedand even attractive and exoticrepresentation of poverty. The study traces how the term 'favela' emerged as an analytic category beginning in the mid-1960s, showing how it became the object of immense popular debate and sustained social science research. But the concept of the favela so favored by social scientists is not, Valladares argues, a straightforward reflection of its social reality, and it often obscures more than it reveals.The established representation of favelas undercuts more complex, accurate, and historicized explanations of Brazilian development. It marks and perpetuates favelas as zones of exception rather than as integral to Brazil's modernization over the past century.

    Abstract: Sir Edward Evan Evans-Pritchard (1902-1973) is widely considered the most influential British anthropologist of the twentieth century, known to generations of students for his seminal works on South Sudanese ethnography Witchcraft, Oracles and Magic Among the Azande (OUP 1937) and The Nuer (OUP 1940). In these works, now classics in the anthropological literature, Evans-Pritchard broke new ground on questions of rationality, social accountability, kinship, social and political organization, and religion, as well as influentially moving the discipline in Britain away from the natural sciences and towards history. Yet despite much discussion about his theoretical contributions to anthropology, no study has yet explored his fieldwork in detail in order to get a better understanding of its historical contexts, local circumstances or the social encounters out of which it emerged. This book then is just such an exploration, of Evans-Pritchard the fieldworker through the lens of his fieldwork photography. Through an engagement with his photographic archive, and by thinking with it alongside his written ethnographies and other unpublished evidence, the book offers a new insight into the way in which Evans-Pritchard's theoretical contributions to the0discipline were shaped by his fieldwork and the numerous local people in Africa with whom he collaborated. By writing history through field photographs we move back towards the fieldwork experiences, exploring the vivid traces, lived realities and local presences at the heart of the social encounter that formed the basis of Evans-Pritchard's anthropology

    Abstract: Considering yodeling as a musical device in American music, this text investigates in parallel two ways of understanding various meanings associated with yodeling: as the connotative functions of yodeling within specific musical texts and as the ideological implications of its use. It aims to provoke a reflection on the concept of singing and received cultural ideas associated with it. Starting with the premise that music is a discursive practice that is itself inseparable from a critical verbal discourse about music, the work interrogates the relationship between yodeling and predominating musical orthodoxy. Through a critical examination of that relationship, the book explores numerous examples of yodeling in American music, questioning why it achieved prominence and status in some genres and not in others and attempting to account for the relatively low prestige accorded to music featuring yodeling.

    Abstract: This title explores Jewish refugee movements before, during and after the Holocaust and to place them in a longer history of forced migration from the 1880s to the present. It does not deny that there were particular issues facing the Jews escaping from Nazism, but in this enlightening study the author emphasises that there are longer term trends which shed light on responses to and the experiences of these refugees and other forced migrants. Focusing on women, children, and 'illegal' boat migrants, the author considers not only British spheres of influence, but also Europe, the Middle East, the Americas, South Asia, Australasia. The approach adopted is historical but incorporates insights from many different disciplines including geography, anthropology, cultural and literary studies and politics.

    Abstract: On December 29, 1890, the US Seventh Cavalry killed more than 200 Lakota Ghost Dancers - including men, women, and children - at Wounded Knee Creek, South Dakota. After the work of death ceased at Wounded Knee Creek, the work of memory commenced. For the US Army and some whites, Wounded Knee represented the site where the struggle between civilization and savagery for North America came to an end. For other whites, it was a stain on the national conscience, a leading example of America's dishonorable dealings with Native peoples. For Lakota people it was the site of the 'biggest murders', where the United States violated its treaty promises and slaughtered innocents.

    Abstract: Auf einen Begriff scheint ›Heimat‹ nicht zu bringen zu sein. Vielmehr stellt sich Unschärfe oder Mehrdeutigkeit ein. Womöglich liegt in der Offenheit und begrifflichen Widerständigkeit gerade der Reiz, das Potenzial, aber auch die Brisanz dieses streitbaren wie umstrittenen Konzepts. Eine Öffnung der ›Heimat‹ hin zu den Anforderungen von Moderne und Globalisierungen lässt sich ebenso konstatieren wie die zum Teil fatalen Folgen von Ausschließung und Abgrenzung, für die der Begriff auch steht. Heimaten gewinnen ihre Plausibilität aus je spezifischen historischen Umständen. Brüche, Transformationen, Aufmerksamkeitsverschiebungen und Neuakzentuierungen, die das Konzept seit etwa 1800 in zunehmendem Maße geprägt haben, lassen Konjunkturen erkennen. Diese sind meist - in den Koordinaten von Raum, Zeit und Identität - Protokolle der Verunsicherung oder des Verlusts. Heimat fungiert dann gleichermaßen als Sehnsuchtsraum und Ordnungsentwurf. Der Band versteht sich nicht als ein weiterer Versuch, Heimat zu definieren, sondern versammelt Studien aus Literatur-, Film- und Geschichtswissenschaft, die vor allem der Frage nachgehen, wo, wann und wie Heimat thematisiert und konzeptualisiert wurde und wird. Es wird also an einzelnen Lektüren und Überlegungen erprobt, was als eine historische Perspektive notwendiger Impuls für eine Beschäftigung mit Heimat sein könnte.

    Abstract: »Man muß absolut modern sein!« - Diese Prämisse stand wie ein Leitstern über zahlreichen Avantgarde-Bewegungen der 1910er- und 1920er-Jahre. Vom Salon auf die Straße, aus den esoterischen Zirkeln ins Leben, bevorzugt ins Nachtleben: Als Grenzgänger zwischen den kulturellen Lebenswelten ging der neue Künstlertypus im legeren Anzug und mit eingeklemmtem Augenzwickel zum proletarischen Boxkampf oder ins populäre Varieté. Er spielte in einer Jazzband, sammelte Schallplatten, tanzte Foxtrott sowie Charleston und erhob mithin nicht nur die Reklame zum künstlerischen Prinzip, sondern verstand es auch geschickt, die erprobten PR-Strategien der Unterhaltungsindustrie für seine eigenen Zwecke zu nutzen. Auf diesen Spuren folgt Anke J. Hübel den Protagonisten der damaligen Avantgarde-Bewegungen und widmet sich dabei insbesondere der vielschichtigen Beziehung, die die Künstler mit der seinerzeit äußerst populären Jazzmusik eingingen. Der interdisziplinär angelegte Essay ist gleichermaßen ein Stück Medien- wie auch Zeitgeschichte.

    Abstract: In einer 1908 erschienenen "Kampfschrift gegen die Geräusche unseres Lebens" ereiferte sich der Kulturphilosoph Theodor Lessing über das "Getobe unermesslich anschwellender Riesenstädte, in denen "einer auf des anderen Nervenklaviatur" spiele. Als große Lärmbelästigung empfand er vor allem die Musik: So mokierte Lessing sich über die "grauenhafte Unsitte" der Biermusiken und Promenadenkonzerte oder die "Tyrannei" des Klavierspiels bei geöffnetem Fenster. Derlei Beschwerden sind indes nur die Gegenseite einer sich seit dem frühen 19. Jahrhundert umfassend ausbreitenden urbanen populären Musikkultur, die dieser Band aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven in den Blick nimmt.

Wie gestaltet sich die Gesellschaft im modernen Königtum in Afrika und mit welchen Mitteln und Medien regiert der König? Raphaela von Weichs' ethnologische Studie verknüpft auf innovative Weise zentrale Debatten der politischen Anthropologie mit aktuellen Ansätzen der Medien- und Religionsforschung.
