    Abstract: "This book bridges the gap between historical research on Japan and the field of childhood history by writing children and childhood into the general historical record of the Meiji period. To explore the widely varying circumstances of childhood during the Japanese transition to modernity, the volume presents survey studies and "snapshots" of historical moments by authors from Europe, Japan, and North America. These histories of children and childhood address various thematic aspects, from birth and child-rearing to the representation of childhood in literary works, and these are approached from differing angles, in terms of theoretical perspectives and methodology. Toffa entwickelt eine neue epistemische Lesart der deutschen Missions- und Kolonialgeschichte in Togo. Anhand der Missionskonzeption des Missionsinspektors Franz Michael Zahn wirft er einen diskursanalytischen Blick auf die unterschiedlichen Ordnungen, Entscheidungen und persönlichen Überlegungen. Ein besonderer Fokus liegt dabei auf den daraus abzuleitenden Werten und Normen.     Abstract: This book analyzes conflicting notions of identity and belonging in contemporary Europe. Addressing the creation, negotiation, and (re)use of diverse spaces and places of belonging, the book examines their fascinating complexities in the context of a changing Europe.     Abstract: Die bislang unerschlossene Geschichte griechischer Arbeitsmigrant*innen, die in den 1960er Jahren nach Nordwestdeutschland ausgewandert sind, wird nun erstmals erzählt. Maike Wöhler besuchte für ihr kulturwissenschaftliches Projekt und ihre ethnografische Feldforschung die ehemaligen Olympia Werke im friesischen Schortens-Roffhausen, den Arbeitgeber der eingewanderten Griech*innen in der Region. Auf Grundlage von Interviews mit ehemaligen Zeitzeug*innen ermöglicht sie sowohl Einheimischen als auch Eingewanderten differenzierte und aufgeklärte Blicke auf die Lebensrealitäten der Menschen – eine wesentliche Voraussetzung für ein kooperatives Miteinander und ein zukünftiges Zusammenleben in Vielfalt.

    Abstract: Essays on Marxism and Asia begins with the largely forgotten prophet of ancient Iran Zarathushtra, remembered and immortalised by Friedrich Nietzsche's Also Sprach Zarathustra. In contrast to the infamous clash of civilisation thesis, this book argues for a humanist theory of civilisations and studies the Parsis or Persians who left Iran to settle in India and make it their home. It claims that Parsis, despite being a migrant community, took strength from their Persian heritage and civilisation and rose to become the architects of industrial modernity in India. This book locates this humanist theory in the larger genre of the Asiatic mode of production with caste as its sub- text. It then takes a phenomenological reading of caste in India and says that India is afflicted by a very strange illness called silent blindness' where humanity is silenced and blinded in front of the caste apparatus. It then analyzes how capitalism and modernity fashioned caste in the image of capitalism and how the Indian right- wing imagined its fascistic politics of race and racial superiority based on the image of caste hierarchy. The problem in India has been that the liberals could not take caste seriously so as to confront it and then annihilate this violent apartheid structure. This, the book argues, has led to the rise of fascism in India. The book concludes with positing two different strands of secularism, namely liberal or bourgeois secularism which merely separates religion and the state (but mixes these when required) and revolutionary secularism which humanises religion and politics first in order to find the human and class content in both.     Abstract: Queer spaces are crucial for the construction of LGBTQ+ communities, as they constitute places where queer subjects can create political, social, and affective alliances. Júlia Braga Neves shows how these spaces are pivotal for the representation of queer history in the fictional works by the British authors Sarah Waters and Alan Hollinghurst, whose characters and plots are articulated through and within London's sexual geographies. Considering the intersection between gender, sexuality, and class, this study engages with spatial, queer, feminist, and Marxist theories as a means to reflect on London, queer historiography, and the relationship between subject and urban space.

    Abstract: "This is a rigorous academic inquiry into how labor power has been dehumanized and commodified around the world through the ages for creation of wealth, capital accumulation, and industrialization. Major forms of unfree and involuntary labor markets around the world-from slavery to serfdom, from feudalism to indentured servitude, from guestworker programs to human-trafficking-have been analyzed theoretically and empirically from multidisciplinary and comparative perspectives. The inquiry encompasses the slaveries of the Amerindians and the Africans in the New World in the context of the European colonization; the worlds of serfdom and feudalism in the contexts of Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Russia, Japan, China, and India; the episodes of indentured servitude of the Europeans in the New World prior to African slavery, and that of the Indians and the Chinese after the abolition of African slavery; the worlds of guestworker programs in the United States and Europe in the post-World War II era and the migrant labor programs of the Gulf Region since the 1970s; and the slavery-like practices in the contemporary world, including forced labor in global supply chains.     Abstract: Das 20. Jahrhundert als »Zeitalter der Extreme« (Eric Hobsbawm) ist in starkem Maße durch kriegerische und genozidale Auseinandersetzungen geprägt. Bei deren Untersuchung nahm die Geschichtsschreibung jahrzehntelang mehrheitlich eine androzentrische Perspektive ein und ignorierte die in den 1980er-Jahren besonders im angelsächsischen Raum einsetzende Forschung zu Geschlecht, Militär und Krieg. Die internationalen Beiträger*innen des Bandes widmen sich daher aus interdisziplinärer Perspektive der Geschlechterfrage in der Kriegsforschung. Ihre Analysen zu den Weltkriegen, zum Spanischen Bürgerkrieg sowie u.a. zu den Themen Mobilisierung, Wissenschaft und Kultur liefern einen wichtigen Beitrag zur geschlechtergeschichtlichen und -theoretischen Durchdringung der Kriegsgeschichte.

    Abstract: "This book explores the history of Russian peasant bride theft - abduction, capture - from the adoption of Christianity in Kievan Rus in the late tenth century to the very early twentieth century. It argues that bride theft in eighteenth and nineteenth century Russia was practised in large part by, but not exclusively by, Old Believers, the schismatics who rejected the Church reforms of the mid-seventeenth century and shunned contact with the Orthodox Church; and that the point of bride theft, where the bride was often a willing party, often married secretly at night by an Orthodox priest acting illegally, was to absolve the bride and her parents of the responsibility for engaging in a formal Orthodox ritual which Old Believers regarded as sinful. The book also considers how bride theft originated much earlier in Russia and was a continuing tradition in some places, and how all this fitted into the Russian peasant economy.     Abstract: Unter dem ungewissen Erwartungshorizont spätmoderner Gesellschaften treten verschiedene Vorstellungen kollektiver Identität in Konflikt. Jochen Kibel zeigt: Im Streit um das Neue Museum in Berlin und das Militärhistorische Museum in Dresden artikulierten sich unterschiedliche Kollektivierungsdiskurse, in denen die Vergangenheit nach den Anforderungen der Gegenwart umgeformt wurde. Der retrospektive Blick gewährt damit immer auch die prospektive Hoffnung auf eine bessere Vergangenheit. Die dynamischen Verhältnisse der Gegenwart bringen schließlich eine Form reflexiver Identitätsbildung hervor, in der auch die Fähigkeit anhaltender Selbstkritik in der Vergangenheit 〉wiedergefunden〈 wird. Die Vorstellung einer wandlungsfähigen Identität gewährleistet dann ein Gleichbleiben im Strom der Zeit, durch beständige Kurskorrekturen.

Jahrhunderts bis in unsere Gegenwart in den Blick und fokussieren dabei die Interferenz zwischen politischer und literarischer Kommunikation. Erst vor diesem historischen Hintergrund wird deutlich, was an den aggressiven öffentlichen Meinungskämpfen unserer Tage neu ist - und was nicht.

    Abstract: "The Making of a Village examines the social and cultural life of indigenous peoples in India. It unfolds intimate aspects of Adivasi history such as the birth of a village, its demographic formation, forging of social relations, in and out-migration, and the dialectics of village as a socio-physical space during pre-colonial and colonial periods. Drawing on oral, archival and empirical data from eastern India, it highlights the interconnected themes of inflection of identity; the change of the Adivasis from historic agents to colonial subjects and their arcadia to a servile landscape; and the indigenous notion of state.
