Ihre Analysen provozieren den historischen Vergleich und fragen nach Kontinuitäten bis in die Gegenwart, aber auch nach Brüchen, Widersprüchen und Gleichzeitigkeiten

    Abstract: This book analyzes conflicting notions of identity and belonging in contemporary Europe. Addressing the creation, negotiation, and (re)use of diverse spaces and places of belonging, the book examines their fascinating complexities in the context of a changing Europe. Taking an innovative interdisciplinary approach, the volume examines renegotiations of belonging played out through cultural encounters with difference and change, in diverse public spaces and contested places. Highlighting the interconnections between social change and culture, heritage, and memory, the chapters analyze multilayered public spaces and the negotiations over culture and belonging that are connected to them. Through analyses of diverse case studies, the editors and authors draw out the significance of the participation or exclusion of differing community, grassroots, and activist groups in such practices and discourses of belonging in relation to the contemporary emergence of identity conflicts and political uses of the past across Europe. They analyze the ways in which people’s sense of belonging is connected to cultural, heritage, and memory practices undertaken in different public spaces, including museums, cultural and community centres, city monuments and built heritage, neglected urban spaces, and online fora.     Abstract: "In the last 20 years, the related phenomena of honour-based violence and forced marriages have received increasing attention at the international and European level. Punitive responses towards this type of violence have been adopted, including ad hoc criminalisation and legislation containing direct references to the concepts of honour, culture and tradition. However, criminal law-based responses present several shortcomings and have often disregarded the specific needs that victims of such crimes might encounter. This book examines the possibility of using alternative programmes to address cases of honour-based violence and forced marriages. After reviewing previous existing literature, it presents new empirical data. Introducing a case-study from the United Kingdom, the book recalls the debate on Sharia Councils and the Muslim Arbitration Tribunal but examines instead other community-based, secular, programmes. By comparison, a study from Norway on the work of the National Mediation Agency and the so-called Cross-Cultural Transformative Mediation model is investigated as part of a larger multi-agency approach. Ultimately, in an attempt to reconcile pluralism and the rule of law, the book proposes effective ways to tackle honour crimes based on cooperation and individualisation of the proceedings, and capable of improving women's access to justice and reducing secondary victimisation. The book will be essential reading for researchers and academics in Law, Criminology, Sociology, and Anthropology and for policy-makers and practitioners working with honour-based violence cases"--

    Abstract: Warum folgt aus einer prekären gesellschaftlichen Lage nicht automatisch ein politisches Subjekt? Dieser Grundfrage kritischer Gesellschaftstheorie widmet sich Phries Künstler und geht Prozessen prekärer Subjektivierung im Kontext von Mutterschaft und Erwerbslosigkeit nach. Anhand von Interviews mit Teilnehmerinnen von Aktivierungsmaßnahmen werden aus poststrukturalistischer Perspektive die Kämpfe untersucht, die unternommen werden müssen, um den eigenen Subjektstatus gegen die Gefahr der Verwerfung zu sichern. Damit leistet die Studie einen Beitrag zur Theoretisierung und Empirie von Subjektivierung im Horizont sozialer Ungleichheit, Prekarität und Politik

    Abstract: This book offers new insights into the history of right-wing extremism and violence in Europe, East and West, from 1900 until the present day. It is the first book to take such a broad historical approach to the topic. The book explores the transnational dimension of right-wing terrorism; networks of right-wing extremists across borders, including in exile; the trading of arms; the connection between right-wing terrorism and other forms of far-right political violence; as well as the role of supportive elements among fellow travelers, the state security apparatus, and political elites.     Abstract: "In the Christian tradition, death was a punishment by God for the original sin of Adam and Eve. Banished from the Garden of Eden after eating the forbidden fruit of the tree of knowledge, they were condemned to labour, until "you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; you are dust, and to dust you shall return."2 But later in historical time, God sent his son Jesus Christ to earth to teach people how to overcome death and achieve eternal life, as witnessed in the gospels. Christ taught that if sinful humans would repent of their sins and love God, they would be saved from death, for as he said to Martha in the house of Lazarus, "I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live."3 The central narrative of Christian soteriology is the death of Christ himself, through crucifixion, and his resurrection from the dead three days later. Having triumphed over death, his purpose was to lead his followers to salvation. After Christ's bodily ascension into heaven, the task of saving souls for eternity was passed to his church. The emphasis on Christ's death and resurrection, and its representation in the eucharistic service, mean that death and commemoration lie at the very heart of Christianity"--

    Abstract: "This vibrant collection explores women's multifaceted historical and contemporary involvement in photography in Africa. The book offers new ways of thinking about the history of photography, exploring through case studies the complex and historically specific articulations of gender and photography on the continent, and attending to the challenge and potential of contemporary feminist and postcolonial engagements with the medium. The volume is organised in thematic sections that present the lives and work of historically significant yet overlooked women photographers, as well as the work of acclaimed contemporary African women photographers such as Héla Ammar, Fatoumata Diabaté, Lebohang Kganye and Zanele Muholi. The book offers critical reflections on the politics of gendered knowledge production and the production of racialised and gendered identities and alternative and subaltern subjectivities. Several chapters illuminate how contemporary African women photographers, collectors and curators are engaging with colonial photographic archives to contest stereotypical forms of representation and produce powerful counter-histories. Raising critical questions about race, gender and the history of photography the collection provides a model for interdisciplinary feminist approaches for scholars of art history, visual studies and African history"--

    Abstract: Das 20. Jahrhundert als »Zeitalter der Extreme« ist in starkem Maße durch kriegerische und genozidale Auseinandersetzungen geprägt. Die Geschichtsschreibung nahm in ihren Untersuchungen bisher jedoch mehrheitlich eine androzentrische Perspektive ein und ignorierte die in den 1980er Jahren einsetzende Forschung zu Geschlecht, Militär und Krieg. Die internationalen Beiträger*innen des Bandes widmen sich daher aus interdisziplinärer Perspektive der Geschlechterfrage in der Kriegsforschung. Ihre Analysen zu den Weltkriegen, zum Spanischen Bürgerkrieg sowie u.a. zu den Themen Mobilisierung, Wissenschaft und Kultur liefern einen wichtigen Beitrag zur geschlechtergeschichtlichen und -theoretischen Durchdringung der Kriegsgeschichte.Mit einer Einleitung von Karen Hagemann

Am Fenster ihres Ullstein-Büros imaginiert Vicki Baum die Idee einer Telefonistin vor der Schaltwand und transferiert so ihren Roman in ein Theaterstück. Baum, die Telefonistin und die Frauen am Brückengeländer kehren alle den Rücken zum übrigen Raum. Und genauso ausgerichtet sitzen auch die Studierenden bei den berühmten Sit-ins der US-Bürgerrechtsbewegung am Lunch Counter. Kaum bekannt hingegen ist der Kampf der zweiten Frauenbewegung um den Zugang zu Bars, der weniger an der Theke als vor Gericht ausgefochten wurde. Verena Mund untersucht diese Orte des Arbeitsalltags in Bildern, Filmen und Texten sowie ihre Implikationen für Handlungsmacht

    Abstract: This companion volume seeks to trace the development of ideas relating to death, burial, and the remembrance of the dead in Europe from ca.1300-1700. Examining attitudes to death from a range of disciplinary perspectives, it synthesises current trends in scholarship, challenging the old view that the Black Death and the Protestant Reformations fundamentally altered ideas about death. Instead, it shows how people prepared for death; how death and dying was imagined in art and literature; and how practices and beliefs appeared, disappeared, changed, or strengthen over time as different regions and communities reacted to the changing world around them. Overall, it serves as an indispensable introduction to the subject of death, burial, and commemoration in thirteenth to eighteenth century Europe.
