    Abstract: The circulation and entanglements of human beings, data, and goods have not necessarily and by themselves generated a universalising consciousness. The "global" and the "universal", in other words, are not the same. The idea of a world-society remains highly contested. Our times are marked by the fragmentation of a double relativistic character: the inevitable critique of Western universalism on the one hand, and resurgent identitarian and neo-nationalistic claims to identity on the other. Sources of an argumentation for a strong universalism brought forward by Western traditions such as Christianity, Marxism, and Liberalism have largely lost their legitimation. All the while, manifold and situated narratives of a common world that re-address the universal are under way of being produced and gain significance. This volume tracks the development and relevance of such cultural and social practices that posit forms of what we call minor universality. It asks: Where and how do contemporary practices open up concrete settings so as to create experiences, reflections and agencies of a shared humanity?     Abstract: In the recent cultural heritage boom, community-based and national identity projects are intertwined with interest in cultural tourism and sites of the memory of enslavement. Questions of historical guilt and present responsibility have become a source of social conflict, particularly in multicultural societies with an enslaving past. This became apparent in the context of the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020, when statues of enslavers and colonizers were toppled, controversial debates about streets and places named after them re-ignited, and the European Union apologized for slavery after the racist murder of George Floyd. Related debates focus on museums, on artworks acquired unjustly in societies under colonial rule, the question of whether and how museums should narrate the hidden past of enslavement and colonialism, including their own colonial origins with respect to narratives about presumed European supremacy, and the need to establish new monuments for the enslaved, their resistance, and abolitionists of African descent. In this volume, we address this dissonant cultural heritage in Europe, with a strong focus on the tangible remains of enslavement in the Atlantic space in the continent. This may concern, for instance, the residences of royal, noble, and bourgeois enslavers; charitable and cultural institutions, universities, banks, and insurance companies, financed by the traders and owners of enslaved Africans; merchants who dealt in sugar, coffee, and cotton; and the owners of factories who profited from exports to the African and Caribbean markets related to Atlantic slavery

    Abstract: To what extent can Islam be localized in an increasingly interconnected world? The contributions to this volume investigate different facets of Muslim lives in the context of increasingly dense transregional connections, highlighting how the circulation of ideas about 'Muslimness' contributed to the shaping of specific ideas about what constitutes Islam and its role in society and politics. Infrastructural changes have prompted the intensification of scholarly and trade networks, prompted the circulation of new literary genres or shaped stereotypical images of Muslims. This, in turn, had consequences in widely differing fields such as self-representation and governance of Muslims. The contributions in this volume explore this issue in geographical contexts ranging from South Asia to Europe and the US. Coming from the disciplines of history, anthropology, religious studies, literary studies and political science, the authors collectively demonstrate the need to combine a translocal perspective with very specific local and historical constellations. The book complicates conventional academic divisions and invites to think in historically specific translocal contexts

    Abstract: Water is a global resource for modern societies - and water was a global resource for pre-modern societies. The many different water systems serving processes of urbanisation and urban life in ancient times and the Middle Ages have hardly been researched until now. The numerous contributions to this volume pose questions such as what the basic cultural significance of water was, the power of water, in the town and for the town, from different points of view. Symbolic, aesthetic, and cult aspects are taken up, as is the role of water in politics, society, and economy, in daily life, but also in processes of urban planning or in urban neighbourhoods. Not least, the dangers of polluted water or of flooding presented a challenge to urban society. The contributions in this volume draw attention to the complex, manifold relations between water and human beings. This collection presents the results of an international conference in Kiel in 2018. It is directed towards both scholars in ancient and mediaeval studies and all those interested in the diversity of water systems in urban space in ancient and mediaeval times.     
    Abstract: Wasser ist eine globale Ressource für heutige Gesellschaften – Wasser war eine globale Ressource vormoderner Gesellschaften. Die manigfaltigen unterschiedlicher Wassersysteme für Prozesse der Urbanisierung und das urbane Leben in der Antike und dem Mittelalter ist bislang kaum erforscht. Die zahlreichen Beiträge dieses Bandes fragen nach der grundlegenden kulturellen Bedeutung von Wasser ( bzw. power of water) in der Stadt und Wasser für die Stadt aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven. Symbolische, ästhetische oder kultische Aspekte werden ebenso thematisiert wie die Rolle von Wasser in Politik, Gesellschaft oder Wirtschaft und dem alltäglichen Handeln, aber auch in Stadtplanungsprozessen oder städtischen Teilräumen. Nicht zuletzt stellen die Gefahren von verschmutzten Wasser oder Überschwemmungen die städtische Gesellschaft vor Herausforderungen. Die Beiträge diesen Band lenken den Blick auf die komplexen und vielfältigen Beziehungen zwischen Wasser und Menschen. Das Sammelwerk präsentiert die Ergebnisse einer internationalen Tagung in Kiel 2018. Es wendet sich gleichermaßen an Leser aus den altertumskundlichen wie mediävistischen Fächern und darüberhinaus an alle Interessierten, die sich über die Vielfalt von Wassersystemen im Stadtraum der Antike und des Mittelalters informieren möchten

    Abstract: "The book is set in the anthropologically much-neglected multi-ethnic interior of Highland Middle India. It is the result of fieldwork done over a period of more than a decade among the Ho, an indigenous community of approximately one million people, who have shared cultural norms and the space of the hilly region of the Chota Nagpur Plateau with other aboriginal (adivasi) and artisan communities for ages. The book explores the structured tapestry of Ho people’s relations and interrelatedness within their culture-specific sociocosmic universe ensuring their social reproduction in the present and affording them the means for and the awareness of living in a world of plenty. This world of abundance – with the Ho as its conceptual centre – includes the Ho’s dead, their complex spirit world and supreme deity, and their tribal and nontribal fellow humans, and it manifests itself in manifold facets of their lives: socially, ritually, economically, and linguistically."--

    Abstract: Europa ist in der Krise. Angesichts Brexit, dringender Flüchtlings- und Einwanderungsfragen, Diskussionen über den Ausschluss insolventer Länder und dem demokratischen Defizit der EU ist dieser Befund zu einem Allgemeinplatz geworden. Als einen Weg aus der Krise schlagen Politiker_innen, EU-Beamt_innen und Intellektuelle oftmals die Stärkung des Zusammenhalts durch die Rückbesinnung auf die angenommene gemeinsame Geschichte Europas und eine daraus erwachsene kulturelle Identität vor. Dieser Herausforderung stellen sich zunehmend auch aktuelle Nationalmuseen in Europa, indem sie es sich zur Aufgabe machen, sich zu europäisieren: sie setzen es sich zum Ziel, nicht mehr nur die Nation und ihre Geschichte, sondern Europa und europäische Geschichte zu zeigen. Diese "Museen zwischen Nation und Europa" untersucht das Buch aus medienwissenschaftlicher Perspektive. Anhand dreier aktueller Fallstudien aus Deutschland, Polen und Frankreich (Deutsches Historisches Museum Berlin, Europäisches Solidarność Zentrum Danzig, Musée des civilisations de l'Europe et de la Méditerranée Marseille) geht es den Fragen nach, wie diese Museen Europa und seine Geschichte konstruieren, und was Europa und europäisch in ihren musealen Inszenierungen bedeute. Welche Vorstellungen Europas bringen die Medien der Ausstellungen hervor? Wen und was zeigen sie als europäisch, wer gehört dagegen in den musealen Inszenierungen nicht zu Europa? Die Studie zeigt, dass die Europäisierung nationaler Museen auf starke nationale und strukturelle Widerstände stößt. At a time when narratology challenges historiographers to differentiate their "emplotments" (White) from literary inventions, this thirteen-essay collection takes a fresh look at the production of historico-political knowledge in literature and the intricacies of reality and fiction.     Abstract: Seit dem 18. Jahrhundert erlebt die Institution Museum einen unvergleichlichen Aufschwung, der in den vergangenen Jahren insbesondere in Europa und in China zu einer Gründungswelle und einer Neukonzeption etablierter Einrichtungen geführt hat. Zugleich entwickelte sich die Expositorik zu einer eigenen Disziplin. Begriff und Phänomen des Kulturerbes bilden eine scheinbar gegenläufige Bewegung zwischen lokalen, regionalen und nationalen Bezügen einerseits und globalen, das gesamte Erbe der Menschheit repräsentierenden Stätten andererseits. Es deutet sich darin eine neue Kulturentwicklung an, die mit dem Etikett der Glokalisierung belegt ist. Der Band beleuchtet die komplexen Entwicklungen und Theorien aus verschiedenen Perspektiven und anhand von aktuellen Fallbeispielen.

    Abstract: "Literacy and Second Language Learning for the Linguistic Integration of Adult Migrants (LASLLIAM)" is a new reference guide of the Council of Europe. It was developed by a group of experts and the Council of Europe Education Department to support high-quality learning environments for non- and low-literate migrants. Language skills foster, among others, social inclusion, and access to education and employment. Within this context, non-literate or low-literate migrants have specific educational needs, as they must learn a second language while either learning to read and write for the first time or developing basic literacy competences in an alphabet or writing system sometimes different from the one they will have learned initially. When it comes to language or knowledge of society courses, these needs are rarely taken into consideration, and this group of migrants is rarely offered a sufficient number of hours to reach the language level required. This is why LASLLIAM has been conceived: it aims at supporting language educators, curriculum designers and language policymakers in their endeavour to design, implement, evaluate and improve curricula tailored toward the specific needs of the target learners.

    Abstract: From the sports trend of parkour, via the Old Testament, up to the Berlin squatting scene - the different contributions to this volume take up the challenge of rethinking questions about the entanglement of space and gender. Predominant interpretations of current societal phenomena as well as established research topics are examined in order to trace gendered power structures. Thus, resistant moves/tricks (Maschen) and powerful games/acts (Muster) are found in a wide range of topics reaching from observations of performative acts and discourse structures all the way to medial treatments. Introductory comments by Nikita Dhawan, Antje Flüchter, Stephan Günzel, Sabine Hark, and Helga Meise frame the contributions.     Abstract: Main description: Wie und warum wurde Depression zur Volkskrankheit? Vor dem Hintergrund einer Ideengeschichte von Melancholie und Depression entwickelt Konstantin Ingenkamp dazu eine eigene, kulturwissenschaftlich informierte Perspektive, die sich sowohl gegen die immer stärkere Pathologisierung als auch gegen die verbreitete These wendet, dass psychische Erkrankungen immer weiter zunehmen. Stattdessen wird Depression als ein zur Conditio humana gehörender Gemütszustand beleuchtet, der sich als Kehrseite des »Positiven Denkens« in den protestantischen Erweckungsbewegungen des 19. Jahrhunderts ebenso wiederfinden lässt wie als Gegenbegriff zur »mentalen Gesundheit« während des Kalten Krieges. Erst mit dem Boom der Psychopharmaka in der zeitgenössischen »Gesundheitsgesellschaft«, so zeigt der Autor, wird die Depression zur Volkskrankheit.

The essays examine experiences of spirituality in combination with commercialization and expressive performative practices as well as everyday politics of identity. Es ging um die Frage, welche Varianten es in Mitteleuropa im Zeitraum zwischen etwa 1870 und dem "Dritten Reich" bzw. dem Beginn des Zweiten Weltkriegs gab, sich persönlich wie kollektiv als Jude wahrzunehmen und ggf. zu definieren , Main description: The articles in this volume originated from an international and interdisciplinary symposium organized in October 1994 by the Bibliothèque Nationale Luxembourg in collaboration with the Leo Baeck Institute (London), the Division of German-Jewish Literary History at the RWTH Technical University in Aachen and the Department of Hebrew and Comparative Literature of Haifa University. Common to all of them is the question of the various available modes of individual and collective Jewish self-awareness and self-definition existing in Central Europe in the period between 1870 and the Third Reich/Second World War
