Iran's particular system of traditional Persian art music has been long treated as the product of an ever-evolving, ancient Persian culture. In Music of a Thousand Years, Ann E. Lucas argues that this music is a modern phenomenon indelibly tied to changing notions of Iran's national history.     Kurzfassung: In The Race of Sound Nina Sun Eidsheim traces the ways in which sonic attributes that might seem natural, such as the voice and its qualities, are socially produced. Eidsheim illustrates how listeners measure race through sound and locate racial subjectivities in vocal timbre—the color or tone of a voice. Eidsheim examines singers Marian Anderson, Billie Holiday, and Jimmy Scott as well as the vocal synthesis technology Vocaloid to show how listeners carry a series of assumptions about the nature of the voice and to whom it belongs. Outlining how the voice is linked to ideas of racial essentialism and authenticity, Eidsheim untangles the relationship between race, gender, vocal technique, and timbre while addressing an undertheorized space of racial and ethnic performance. In so doing, she advances our knowledge of the cultural-historical formation of the timbral politics of difference and the ways that comprehending voice remains central to understanding human experience, all the while advocating for a form of listening that would allow us to hear singers in a self-reflexive, denaturalized way.

    Kurzfassung: Reconnecting migration studies and the theory of valuation, this collection offers an interdisciplinary approach to the study of transnational music practices. Music is here approached as a practice not confined by audibility - rather, it is "seen" when the YouTube video is clicked, "felt" when the subwoofer vibrates, and "smelled" when the festival crowd dances: practices make music emerge in concrete situations constituted by people, objects, techniques, meanings, and emotions. Through these practices, values are created and shared which connect a way of music-making with objects and places of experiencing music unconfined by borders of any kind

    Kurzfassung: This handbook takes on the task of examining the history of music listening over the past two hundred years. It uses the "art of listening" as a leitmotif encompassing an entanglement of interdependent practices and discourses about a learnable mode of perception. The art of listening first emerged around 1800 and was adopted and adapted across the public realm to suit a wide range of collective listening situations from popular to serious art forms up to the present day. Because this is a relatively new subject in historical research, the volume combines case studies from several disciplines in order to investigate whether, how, and why practices of music listening changed. Focusing on a diverse set of locations and actors and using a range of historical sources, it attempts to historicize and reconstruct the evolution of listening styles to show the wealth of variants in listening.

    Kurzfassung: The "Sound zone" is the first part of the permanent exhibition opened in September 2016 in the new edifice of the Asia and Pacific Museum. The exhibition presents approximately 120 musical instruments originating from various cultural milieux and countries. It includes both simple instruments played by amateurs as well as real masterpieces used by professional musicians at royal courts. The cultural context and functions are illustrated with the help of various multimedia providing the opportunity to learn about the traditional role of an instrument as well as some more contemporary changes in the sphere of music influenced by the intermingling of different cultures

    Kurzfassung: In Anschluss an aktuelle Erkenntnisse soziologischer und sozialpsychologischer Musikrezeptionsforschung erläutert der Band, welche gesellschaftlichen Funktionen das Musikhören heute erfüllt, und welche Rolle hier die neuen Rahmenbedingungen im Web 2.0 spielen. Auf Basis repräsentativer empirischer Erhebungen werden musikalische Einstellungen und Verhaltensweisen illustriert sowie klar abgrenzbare Musikhörtypen charakterisiert, die in je besonderer Weise mit den aktuellen Möglichkeiten und Herausforderungen der digitalen Mediamorphose umgehen. Besondere Berücksichtigung findet dabei die Frage nach der Bedeutung primärer Sozialisation als Gegengewicht zur musikalischen Selbstsozialisation im Internet. Vor allem Alter, Schulbildung und Wohnortsgröße der Menschen zeigen sich als entscheidende Einflussgrößen der individuellen musikalischen Praxis in Österreich. Auf Grundlage einer quantitativen Fragebogenstudie zur Schülerperspektive auf den Musikunterricht der Mittelstufe legt die Autorin im ersten Teil eine Bestandsaufnahme vor, die empirisch gesicherte Daten zum Renommee sowie zur aktuellen Ausrichtung des Faches gibt. In einer Anschlussstudie wird der soziologische Geschlechter-Diskurs durch Unterrichtsforschung konkretisiert. Erkenntnisleitend ist die Frage, wie Lehrende Jugendlichen ausreichend Spielraum für ihre individuellen Interessen und Bedürfnisse bieten können, ohne bestehende Geschlechterverhältnisse zu zementieren.

It proposes new modes of thinking and exposing past musical works to contemporary audiences, arguing for a new kind of performer, emancipated from authoritative texts and traditions, whose creativity is propelled by intensive research and inventive imagination. Moving beyond the work-concept, Logic of Experimentation presents a new image of musical works, based upon the notions of strata, assemblage and diagram, advancing innovative practice-based methodologies that integrate archival and musicological research into the creative process leading to a performance. Beyond representational modes of performance - be it mainstream or historically informed performance practices - 'Logic of Experimentation' creates an ontological, methodological and ethical space for experimental performance practices, arguing for a new mode of performance. Starting from how this question is commonly answered by the practice of interpretation in Western notated art music, this book proposes a move beyond commonly accepted codes, conventions and territories of music performance. Appropriating reflections from post-structural philosophy, visual arts and semiotics, and crucially based upon an artistic research project with a strong creative and practical component, it proposes a new approach to music performance. The approach is based on divergence, on the difference produced by intensifying the chasm between the symbolic aspect of music notation and the irreducible materiality of performance. Instead of regarding performance as reiteration, reconstruction and reproduction of past musical works, Powers of Divergence emphasises its potential for the emergence of the new and for the problematisation of the limits of musical semiotics."

    Kurzfassung: »Durchaus rhapsodisch« - so beginnt eine Fragment gebliebene Sonate für Cello allein des jungen Theodor Wiesengrund; eine Vortragsanweisung, die ebenso auch das Formprinzip des später unter dem Namen Adorno weithin bekannt gewordenen Philosophen umreißen könnte. In diesem Band geht es um den eher fremd gebliebenen Musiker und Komponisten. Von Adornos zunächst künstlerischen Ambitionen ausgehend beleuchtet der Band eine wesentliche Dimension von Adornos musikalischem Denken, indem er sein kompositorisches Schaffen in den Blick rückt: die Liederzyklen und die Werke für Streicher, die Klavierstücke und Orchesterwerke. This book presents a cultural history of modern Southeast Asia from the vantage point of popular music, considering not just singers and musicians but their fans as well, showing how the music was intrinsically bound up with modern life and the societal changes that came with it. Reaching new audiences across national borders, popular music of the period helped push social change, and at times served as a medium for expressions of social or political discontent.

    Kurzfassung: The Jazz Republic examines jazz music and the jazz artists who shaped Germany’s exposure to this African American art form from 1919 through 1933. Jonathan O. Wipplinger explores the history of jazz in Germany as well as the roles that music, race (especially Blackness), and America played in German culture and follows the debate over jazz through the fourteen years of Germany’s first democracy. He explores visiting jazz musicians including the African American Sam Wooding and the white American Paul Whiteman and how their performances were received by German critics and artists. The Jazz Republic also engages with the meaning of jazz in debates over changing gender norms and jazz’s status between paradigms of high and low culture. By looking at German translations of Langston Hughes’s poetry, as well as Theodor W. Adorno’s controversial rejection of jazz in light of racial persecution, Wipplinger examines how jazz came to be part of German cultural production more broadly in both the US and Germany, in the early 1930s. Using a wide array of sources from newspapers, modernist and popular journals, as well as items from the music press, this work intervenes in the debate over the German encounter with jazz by arguing that the music was no mere “symbol” of Weimar’s modernism and modernity. Rather than reflecting intra-German and/or European debates, it suggests that jazz and its practitioners, African American, white American, Afro-European, German and otherwise, shaped Weimar culture in a central way

    Kurzfassung: Aus kulturgeschichtlicher Perspektive beschreibt die Studie die Einbindung der (Lied-)Musik in den über­grei­fenden Prozess der Aufklärung, leuchtet ihre Wechselwirkung mit anderen Künsten aus und lässt die komplexe Einbindung musikkultureller Praxis in gesell­schaft­liche Strukturen sichtbar werden. -Im 18. Jahrhundert entfaltete sich in Hamburg eine der lebendigsten weltlichen Lied­kulturen der Epoche, die ihren sozialen Platz in städtischen Geselligkeitskontexten fand. Die zwar schlichten, dennoch aber pointierenden Kompositionen vertieften die Botschaften der Liedlyrik mit ihren zentralen Themen Liebe, Wein und satirische Kritik. Im Selbstverständnis der Aufklärung dienten Lieder gleichermaßen zur Konstituierung von Geselligkeit wie zur Vermittlung von Lebenserfahrung und körperlich-seelischer Selbstregulation. Katharina Hottmann ist Privatdozentin am Institut für Historische Musikwissenschaft der Universität Hamburg.

    Kurzfassung: Everyday articulations of music, place, urban politics, and inclusion/exclusion are powerfully present in Istanbul. This volume analyzes landscapes of music, community, and exclusion across a century and a half. An interdisciplinary group of scholars and artists presents four case studies: the rembetika, the music of the Asiks, the Zakir/Alevi tradition, and hip-hop, in Beyoglu, Üsküdar, the gentrifying Sulukule neighborhood, and across the metropolis. Alex Papadopoulos is Associate Professor of Geography at DePaul University, Chicago. He studies the contestation of urban space in European cities. Asli Duru is Marie Curie Fellow at The Open University, London, and studies everyday geographies of health and wellbeing.

    Kurzfassung: Player pianos, radio-electric circuits, gramophone records, and optical sound film—these were the cutting-edge acoustic technologies of the early twentieth century, and for many musicians and artists of the time, these devices were also the implements of a musical revolution. Instruments for New Music traces a diffuse network of cultural agents who shared the belief that a truly modern music could be attained only through a radical challenge to the technological foundations of the art. Centered in Germany during the 1920s and 1930s, the movement to create new instruments encompassed a broad spectrum of experiments, from the exploration of microtonal tunings and exotic tone colors to the ability to compose directly for automatic musical machines. This movement comprised composers, inventors, and visual artists, including Paul Hindemith, Ernst Toch, Jörg Mager, Friedrich Trautwein, László Moholy-Nagy, Walter Ruttmann, and Oskar Fischinger. Patteson’s fascinating study combines an artifact-oriented history of new music in the early twentieth century with an astute revisiting of still-relevant debates about the relationship between technology and the arts.

    Kurzfassung: Die Motivationen für die Berufswahl ‚Lehramt‘ sind vielfach untersucht worden. Dieser Forschungsstand erhält mit der vorliegenden Studie neue Impulse: Aus biographischer und bildungssoziologischer Perspektive werden die Studien- und Berufsentscheidungen künftiger Musiklehrerinnen und -lehrer rekonstruiert. Es wird anhand von Einzelfallrekonstruktionen gezeigt, dass sich der ‘Berufswunsch Musiklehrer‘ im Verlauf der Lebensgeschichten in engem Zusammenhang mit den musikalischen Tätigkeiten und Erfahrungen – in einem Spannungsfeld von aktiver Musik(re)produktion, dem Herkunftsmilieu und (pädagogischer) Musikvermittlung im späteren Beruf – entwickelt. Mit diesem Zuschnitt wird die biographische Perspektive für die Betrachtung von Studien- und Berufsentscheidungen gestützt.     Kurzfassung: The essays in this volume share a theoretical and methodological connection to Disability Studies, especially its central idea that disability is a social and cultural construction. Disability is shown to be a core feature of the musical identity of music makers (especially composers and performers), something that affects their lives and works and their public reception. Music represents disability in various ways and affirms the notion that disability is a performance, something you do rather than something you are. These essays make the case that disability is not something at the periphery of culture and music, but something central to our art and to our humanity. They also address an important lacuna within a Disability Studies that has mostly overlooked music as a medium through which disability can be constructed.
