Was geschieht in ihren Köpfen?

Abstract: As scientists toil in the fields of their disciplines, they rarely enjoy opportunities to step back from their work and evaluate where their efforts have taken them. Abstract: This text presents an account of human development that looks at both the differences and similarities among cultures. Beyond demonstrating that "culture matters," Rogoff focuses on how culture matters in human development - what patterns help make sense of the cultural aspects of human development? Rogoff integrates research and theory from several disciplines, including cross-cultural psychology, sociocultural research, linguistic and psychological anthropology, and history. The volume examines multiple aspects of development, including childrearing, gender differences, interdependence and autonomy, developmental transitions, maternal attachment, parental discipline, and cognition and culture

Abstract: This volume is a comprehensive roadmap to the burgeoning area of affective sciences, which now spans several disciplines. The Handbook brings together, for the first time, the various strands of inquiry and latest research in the scientific study of the relationship between the mechanisms of the brain and the psychology of mind. In recent years, scientists have made considerable advances in understanding how brain processes shape emotions and are changed by human emotion. Drawing on a wide range of neuroimaging techniques, neuropsychological assessment, and clinical research, scientists are be

Abstract: Modern research demonstrates that imitation is more complex than classical theories proposed. This book provides analysis of empirical work on imitation and shows what can be learned through interdisciplinary research. Why do we imitate and what does it tell us about the encoding of self and others within our brains?
Abstract: An introduction to the imitative mind and brain / Wolfgang Prinz and Andrew N. Meltzoff -- Elements of a developmental theory of imitation / Andrew N. Meltzoff -- Imitation and imitation recognition : functional use in preverbal infants and nonverbal children with autism / Jacqueline Nadel -- Self-awareness, other-awareness, and secondary representation / Jens B. Asendorpf -- Notes on individual differences and the assumed elusiveness of neonatal imitation / Mikael Heimann -- Ego function of early imitation / Philippe Rochat -- The imitator's representation of the imitated : ape and child / Andrew Whiten -- Seeing actions as hierarchically organized structures : great ape manual skills / Richard W. Byrne -- Experimental approaches to imitation / Wolfgang Prinz -- Imitation : common mechanisms in the observation and execution of finger and mouth movements / Harold Bekkering -- Goal-directed imitation / Merideth Gattis, Harold Bekkering, and Andreas Wohlschläger -- Visuomotor couplings in object-oriented and imitative actions / Stefan Vogt -- On bodies and events / Barbara Tversky, Julie Bauer Morrison, and Jeff Zacks -- What is the body schema? / Catherine L. Reed -- From mirror neurons to imitation : facts and speculations / Giacomo Rizzolatti, Luciano Fadiga, Leonardo Fogassi, and Vittorio Gallese -- Cell populations in the banks of the superior temporal sulcus of the macaque and imitation / Tjeerd Jellema, Chris I. Baker, Michael W. Oram, and David I. Perrett -- Is there such a thing as functional equivalence between imagined, observed, and executed action? / Jean Decety -- The role of imitation in body ownership and mental growth / Marcel Kinsbourne -- Imitation, apraxia, and hemisphere dominance / Georg Goldenberg and Joachim Hermsdörfer

Abstract: The path adolescents take from childhood to adulthood is a product of social, economic, political, and technological forces. These forces may facilitate youth's preparation to become healthy adults, or they may leave youth unprepared for adulthood. Knowledgeable projections are vital in shaping the agenda for research; for alerting educators, policy makers, and practitioners to new issues; and for formulating thoughtful responses to emerging dilemmas. This book focuses upon the future of adolescence in postindustrial societies. The authors identify some ominous societal changes that will affect youth: unstable job markets, competition for public resources due to an aging population, and widening income gaps between 'information workers' and low-skill workers. But they also observe opportunities created by information technology, innovations in health service delivery and criminal-justice rehabilitation, and the resourcefulness of a new generation. This volume examines these and other macro-structural changes that will impact adolescents' lives and their futures as adults.

Abstract: Between Culture and Biology brings together biological, psychological and cultural perspectives on development. It argues that the biological bases of behaviour and cultural context should be approached in an integrated fashion to properly understand ontogenetic development and that both the cultural and biological demain provide constraints and opportunities for development

Abstract: We live in a world where social interaction is increasingly mediated by technological devices. In this book, Ian Hutchby explores the impact these technologies have on our attempts to communicate. Focusing on four examples - telephones, computerized expert systems at work, speech-based systems dealing with enquiries from the public, and multi-user spaces on the Internet - Hutchby asks: are we increasingly technologized conversationalists, or is technology increasingly conversationalized? Conversation and Technology draws on recent theory and empirical research in conversation analysis, ethnomethodology and the social construction of technology. In novel contributions to each of these areas, Hutchby argues that the ways in which we interact can be profoundly shaped by technological media, while at the same time we ourselves are shapers of both the cultural and interactional properties of these technologies. The book begins by examining a variety of theoretical perspectives on this issue. Hutchby offers a critical appraisal of recent sociological thinking, which has tended to over-estimate society's influence on technological development. Instead he calls for a new appreciation of the relationship between human communication and technology. Using a range of case studies to illustrate his argument, Hutchby explores the multiplicity of ways in which technology affects our ordinary conversational practices. Readers in areas as diverse as sociology, communication studies, psychology, computer science and management studies will find much of interest in this account of the human and communicative properties of various forms of modern communication technology. Ian Hutchbyis Senior Lecturer in Sociology and Communication at Brunel University and Honorary Research Fellow in the School of Social Sciences at Cardiff University. His research involves the application of conversation analysis to various areas of technologically-mediated interaction, including the distinctive properties of broadcast talk and the possibilities of human-machine interaction; as well as the analysis of children's communicative competence

When trying to make sense of our lives, we tend to blame our own failings and weaknesses for our discomforts and defeats. And in doing so, we make things worse rather than better.
