Arbeitsvorgänge des Brotbackens: Anrühren, Säuern und Kneten des Teiges; Heizen des Backofens (freistehender Ofen im Garten) mit Holz; Formen, Gersteln und Einschießen der Brotlaibe; Ausziehen und Waschen der Brote.

    Abstract: Auf einer vorbereiteten Zal-zas-Unterlage aus Pappe trägt ein Mann in Rikon (Schweiz) aus blauer, roter und gelber Knetmasse Blumen, Pflanzen und Schmucksymbole auf. Er stellt das hergestellte Stück als fünfte Opfergabe in einen Ständer, der als Altarschmuck dient.
    Abstract: On a prepared base made of pap and cut in the shape of the zal-zas, flowers, plants and decorative symbols are applied with plasticine in various colours. The ready offering is finally added to a group of four zal-zas - which are used to decorate the altar for a forthcoming ceremony.

Dann legt sie das Brot auf den heißen Lehmboden unter die Backglocke. Vor dem Backen sticht sie mit einer Gabel ein mit einem Kreis umringtes Kreuz in das Brot.
    Abstract: Flour is made into pastry in a wooden trough by adding leaven, water, and salt. After the loaves are shaped a fire is lit under the baking jar in the open fireplace which heats both the jar and the clay floor and the baking jar turned upside down over it. Baking takes 20 to 30 minutes.

    Abstract: Der Flötenbauer Dumitru Tartareanu spielt auf einer selbstgebauten Kernspaltflöte (s. Film E 1866) mit sechs Grifflöchern und rückseitigem Aufschnitt eine Rubatoweise und zwei Tanzlieder mit dem charakteristischen Gutturalton. Das Rubatospiel wurde auch ohne Gutturalton aufgenommen.
    Abstract: The flute-maker Dumitru Tartareanu plays on a self-made flue pipe (see film E 1866) with six finger holes and dorsal slit. He performs one tune in tempo rubato and two dance tunes with the characteristic guttural sound. A recording was also made of the tune in tempo rubato without the guttural sound.

    Abstract: At a dama for several deceased persons mock fights are performed in front of the dead persons' houses by single and whole groups of men. The guests of the ceremony dance on the roof terraces, sacrifice goats and cotton ribbons; at night the women dance before the doors of the death houses in honour of the deceased.

    Abstract: Ein junger Mann aus der Siedlung Tuo auf Fenualoa klettert auf einen Baum und pflückt Arekanüsse für einen älteren Mann. Dieser kaut dann die von den Faserhüllen befreiten Nüsse mit Betelblättern und gebranntem gelöschtem Kalk.
    Abstract: In the bushland of Fenualoa (Ngasinue) a young man scales a betel palm (Areca catechu L.) with a climbing rope to pick a bunch of nuts for an older man. The latter takes the betel nuts home and enjoys them, freeing them from the fibrous covering and then chewing them with betel leaves (Piper betle L.) and slaked lime which has also been procured. In another part of the village, an old man, similarly engaged in "betel chewing", uses a small mortar for pouding the nuts.

    Abstract: Zwei Frauen sammeln im Buschland von Tuo auf Fenualoa Blätter von verschiedenen wildwachsenden Pflanzen. Im Dorf verpacken sie die vorher zerkleinerten Blätter zusammen mit erhitzten Steinen in Taroblättern. Nach dem Dünsten werden die Blätter mit einer Muschelschale zerkleinert.
    Abstract: In the bushland north of Tuo on Fenualoa (Ngasinue) two women gather leaves from some plants growing wild. In the village they heat up stones in an earth oven pit. Meanwhile they lay a wooden dish with taro leaves and then put the leaves previously harvested and now divided up on this, and place the hot stones between them, so that by adding water the leaves are stewed to a tasty dish. Finally one of the women chops the pieces of leaves with a mussel shell ready to be eaten.

Das immer heißer werdende Holzmehl sammelt sich in der entstehenden Rinne und beginnt zu glühen.
    Abstract: A man seperates a branch from a relatively dry tree in the bushland of Fenualoa (Ngasinue). He splits off a small piece which he sharpens, in order to use it for rubbing off wood-dust which gets hotter under constant pressure on the larger piece of wood, collects at the end of the trough caused, and finally begins to smoulder.

    Abstract: Zwei Männer spielen das dem Mühle-Spiel ähnliche Agra: Markieren des Spielfeldes im Sand, abwechselndes Setzen der zwölf Spielmarken aus Stein bzw. trockenem Kamelmist und anschließendes Ziehen der Marken, mit dem Ziel, dem Gegner Spielmarken wegzunehmen.
    Abstract: The agra-game has great similarity to a well-known chart game. Through indents 5 x 6 playing fields are marked into the sand. Small stones and dried camel dung are used as game markers. In the first half of the game the two players alternatively place each twelve markers. In the second half, on "drawing" three markers are to be brought in one row. Whoever succeeds, may take one game marker away from the other. A player has lost as soon as he has less than three game markers left. In the film a short game-party is first shown. Then two men playing the first part of a longer game of "agra" is shown.

    Abstract: In der Siedlung Fenualoa bereiten zwei Frauen aus Bananen, Maniokknollen, ausgepreßtem Saft von geraspelten Kokosnüssen und Kokosöl eine Speise. Die Ingredienzien werden z. T. im Erdofen gedünstet, z. T. mit heißen Steinen erhitzt, bevor sie miteinander vermischt werden.
    Abstract: Two women peel and rub bananas and manioc tubers in the village of Tuo on Fenualoa (Ngasinue). They pack the rubbed mass into leaf sheathing. The two packets of pulp are stewed in a earth oven. Meanwhile the women grate the coconut pulp, press the "milk" out and heat it in a wooden trough by means of hot stones. The stones with the sweetish layer of fat sticking on are pressed again and again into the pudding, which in the meantime has cooked and been taken out of the ground oven and now has to be enriched with coconut oil. Finally the men of the house consume the delicious pudding dish.

    Abstract: LADUMA MADELA, the witch doctor, sits in front of a hut of his Kral and blows a bugle to call his assistant to him. The two men have a recitative conversation about the rain magic. In the next sequence a small child is diagnosed by MADELA with oracle bones and then treated by inhaling, stretching and symbolic striking with the frond. Previously the questionanswer dialogue about the entrance fee takes place between MADELA and the child's mother; the assistant takes the place of the child's father in this.

Then the kettle is placed on the floor and the mush stirred. The thickened mush is tipped on to a table and cut into thick slices with a thread.

    Abstract: Ein Achtzigjähriger spielt eine Rubatoweise sowie zwei Tanzmelodien und zeigt so die Spieltechnik seines Instrumentes (einfache Melodiepfeife, Grifflochanordnung 7 und 1). Als Experiment ist die Skala der Melodiepfeife wiedergegeben.
    Abstract: The bagpiper from Alunis (sub-Carpathian hill zone of Greater Walachia) plays an instrument typical of this part of the country - a bagpipe with a simple melody pipe and a 7 + 1 finger hole arrangement. From the rather slender repertory of the eighty year-old our film illustrates a rubato tune (Doina) and two dance melodies, thus showing the playing technique characteristic for the instrument. As an experiment the scale of the melody pipe is reproduced.

    Abstract: Aus dem Brunnen der Siedlung Tuo auf Fenualoa schöpft eine Frau Wasser mit einer an einem Rotanstreifen hängenden Kokosnußschale, füllt es in mehrere Kokosnußbehälter, versieht diese mit Saugröhren und Stöpseln und trägt sie nach Hause. Dort wird das Trinken aus einem Behälter demonstriert.
    Abstract: With a coconut shell (with three openings) hanging from a rotan strip a woman scoops water from the well of the village of Tuo on Fenualoa (Ngasinue). With this she fills "coconut bottles" and fits them with suction pipes made of halves of the coconut leaflets. Their openings are sealed with stoppers made of liana leaves. On the family's compound one of the sons drinks up the contents of one of these "bottles" in the characteristic way.

    Abstract: North of Tuo on Fenualoa (Ngasinue) a man fells an Areca palm in order to cut off a piece of its trunk from which he carves a plant stick in his neighbouring yam garden. He loosens the soil with it and makes it into three little hills one after the other in which his wife plants yam tubers (Dioscorea spec.). The woman stands long poles in them for the germinating yams to climb up. In another garden nearby, a woman carries out similar planting work with yam bulbs of another variety.

Die Federgeldeinheit wird um zwei an den Enden befestigte Rindenmanschetten zu einer Doppelrolle aufgewickelt.
    Abstract: In the village of Nemboi two specialists make elements of feather money from the whitish feathers of the pacific dove (Ducula pacifica), the red feathers of the nectar bird (Myzomela cardinalis), and the juice of the paper mulberry tree (Broussonetia papyrifera). In tile-fashion, the element are tied to a roll of 9 m with bast of the Gnetum gnemon tree. The ready feather money is wound into a double roll round two bark rings fastened at the ends.

    Abstract: Ein hochseetüchtiges Segelboot (Te puke) wird ins Wasser der Lagune von Tanga auf Fenualoa geschoben, mit dem großen, krebsscherenförmigen Segel getakelt und mit einem Steuerpaddel versehen. Segelmanöver Fahrtrichtungswechsel um 180° ohne Wenden des Bootes. Das Steuerpaddel bricht und wird repariert. Das Boot legt an, wird auf den Strand geschoben und abgetakelt.
    Abstract: An ocean-going sailing-boat (Te puke) is pushed into the water of the lagoon, rigged with the large claw-shaped sail, and fitted with a steering paddle. Manoeuvre of changing the sailing direction by 180° without tacking the boat. The steering paddle breaks and is repaired. The boat lands, is pushed upon the beach, and unrigged.

    Abstract: A woman and her daughter go into the bushland north of Tuo on Fenualoa (Ngasinue). The young woman lays a "climbing rope" from a liana stem of some length and fastens it with knots. Then she climbs up a tree by alternately reaching up its trunk and drawing and stretching her legs held by the climbing rope accordingly. She gathers the fruit of the tree with a picker and then slides down the trunk using the climbing rope, grasping the trunk alternately with her hands as she goes.

    Abstract: Ein Mann aus der Siedlung Malumbu auf Fenualoa holt Hartholz und Rohr aus dem Buschland und fertigt daraus einen Pfeil: Schnitzen der Pfeilspitze mit Widerhaken, Härten im Feuer, Einkleben in das Rohr mit Harz; Kürzen der Schaftlänge und Umwickeln des Schaftendes; Probeschuß.
    Abstract: In the bushland of Fenualoa (Ngasinue) a man fells a palm in order to obtain hardwood for making arrow-heads. In addition he cuts cane for arrow shafts. In the village of Malumbu the man carves an arrow-head with a barb. He hardens it over a fire, dips the end into resin of the bread-fruit tree and pushes it into one of the pieces of cane which he then shortens to the length of an arrow-shaft. The shafting part and the notched end of the shaft are wound round with coconut fibres. The man hardens the end of the shaft with some embers. Finally he tests the completed arrow by a few shots.

    Abstract: Behind the westerly Graciosa Bay a sago palm (Metroxylon spec.) is felled and a piece of the trunk sliced into six pieces. In the village of Lwowa the men of the working clan erect a scaffold to scrape the pith from the pieces of sago palm. The women fill this into a press bag hanging from the scaffold, so that by adding water, starch-containing liquid can be obtained. This flows through a drainage groove into a wooden bowl at the bottom of which the sago starch is deposited.

    Abstract: The chief wife of Khlimba, the Haedman, takes her child, obviously suffering from whooping cough, to a lady witch doctor. After a short questioning the child is "therapized". The witch doctor scratches its skin and spreads "medicine" over it with a wisp of straw. Afterwards she performs two ritual dances with her assistant.

    Abstract: Ein Mönch der Gelugpa-Sekte stellt in Rikon (Schweiz) ein Torma für einen Altartisch her: Aus Tschampa (Teig aus geröstetem Gerstenmehl, Wasser und Butter) formt er eine Lotosblume und bestreicht sie mit heißer Butter. Aus Weizenmehlteig formt er zusätzliche Teile und fügt das Ganze zu einem Blumenornament zusammen.
    Abstract: A monk of the dGe-lugs-pa sect produces a gtor-ma destined as an offering (zal-zas) for an altar table. He makes a dough from barley-meal and water, beside which he has a smallish piece of dough made from wheat flour. With the barley dough (rcam-pa) he kneads a conical form with a straight, round base. The lighter dough is used to produce the decorations which represent flowers. The ready offering is coated with hot butter to improve keeping.

    Abstract: Aus gekochten und gepreßten Kartoffeln, Sauerteig, Salz, Kümmel, Roggen- und Weizenmehl sowie Wasser bereitet eine katholische Bäuerin den Brotteig, den sie dreimal bekreuzt. Nach dem Aufgehen des Teiges formt sie vier Brotlaibe, die in Strohkörbe gelegt werden. Das Backen erfolgt im mit Holz beheizten Backofen, der sich außerhalb in einem aus Ziegeln gebauten Backhaus befindet. Vor dem Backen werden in die Laibe mit drei Fingern Zeichen eingedrückt (Gottes Augen).
    Abstract: In the village of Starý Hrozenkov-Cerná in the eastern Moravian area of "Kopanice" bread-baking is still part of the normal work of the peasant roman. Every fortnight she bakes 3-4 loaves of bread in the typical Kopanice baking style. The oven is not in the house, but nearby outside in a bakehouse. It is a catholic family. In the morning, before preparing the leaven, the peasant woman boils the potatoes she needs for the dough and towards evening she prepares the leaven. The next day the dough is finally made ready, four loaves of bread are kneaded into shape and four rolls for the children. In the meantime the oven is heated up; the wood is brought from the shed. Then the loaves are pushed into the oven to bake for two hours and the rolls for 30 minutes. The baked bread is carried back to the house to be wiped and cooled down. Slices are cut from the first loaf immediately it has cooled down. The whole process is done by the peasant woman and the daughters, the peasant man helping only in wiping down the loaves.

    Abstract: The way in which the flute with six finger holes and a mouth on the reverse side is played, as well as the techniques adapted for playing and holding it, are illustrated by an informant from Vaideeni (Sub-Carpathian hill zone in Oltenia), where the film was made.     Abstract: Nachdem sie im Meer gebadet haben, legen sich drei Männer aus dem Dorfe Mbanua ihren Tanzschmuck an. Sie wandern zum Nachbardorf Mönen und führen dort einen Zeremonialtanz aus dem Initiationskomplex auf und singen dazu.
    Abstract: Prior to performing a ceremonial dance from the initiation complex, men of Mbanua (Graciosa Bay, Ndende) bathe in the sea first. Then they adorn themselves with circlets and rings on their upper arms. Helpers fasten the ear jewellery on and paint their faces. The dancers get ornamentation for their chests, dance aprons, adornment for their heads, noses and legs. Then the men walk to the neighbouring village of Möneu. There, on the village dancing ground, they perform a slow-pace circular dance to an ombla initiation chant. Then men from Möneu join in, and together they dance a "common dance". Finally the village of Möneu shows its gratitude with dishes of ceremonial pudding.

    Abstract: Verschiedene Einwohner aus Tuo auf Fenualoa fischen z. T. von Booten aus. Fischfang mit Pfeil und Bogen, Zugleine und Stangennetz. Angeln mit dem Fischdrachen: Fangen von Hornhechten mit dem Spinnengewebeköder, der vom Drachen an einer Köderleine über die Meeresfläche bewegt wird.
    Abstract: West of the village of Tuo on Fenualoa (Ngasinue) a man shoots fish in the shallow waters of the lagoon with a bow and arrow. From the same settlement men stretch their rod nets for fishing, and move northwards and southwards along the beach of the island in order to catch the fish startled away with a towing line and some beaters in the nets held in a close semicircle. A man and his wife paddle southwards from Tuo in an outrigger canoe, across the reef and out to the sea. Here, the man flies the fishing kite, whilst the woman paddles the canoe against the wind. With the spider's web bait which is waved over the surface of the sea by a bait line hanging from the kite, garfish are caught.

    Abstract: Dicke Fichtenstämme werden im Hof mit Beil und Keilen aufgespalten, in der Stube mit einer Schablone auf verschiedene Schindellänge gemessen und mit der Handsäge gesägt. Auf der Schnitzbank erfolgt dann die Bearbeitung zu Schindeln mit dem Schindelmesser, dem Schlegel und dem Zugmesser. Außer der Arbeitstechnik zeichnet der Film auch die Verhaltensweise des arbeitenden Menschen auf.
    Abstract: Thick pine logs are split in the courtyard with a hatchet and wedges. Inside the house the slips of wood are marked off with the use of a pattern and cutcu with a hand saw to different length. The shaping into shingles is done on the carver's bench by means of the shingle knife, the mallet, and the draw knife. Besides the working technique the film attaches great value to demonstrating the behaviour of the working man.

    Abstract: Ein Mann aus der Siedlung Malumbu auf Fenualoa holt aus dem Buschland elastisches Holz und Rindenbaststreifen und fertigt daraus einen Reflexbogen mit flacher Innen- und konvexer Außenseite sowie Zapfenenden und Bastsehnen.
    Abstract: In the bushland on Fenualoa (Ngasinue) a man cuts a treeshoot in order to obtain elastic wood for making a bow. From another tree he loosens a strip of bark bast for the string. In the village of Malumbu the man carves a bow rod (reflex bow) with the inside flat and the outside convex which has mortised ends. The "string" is then twisted from strands of the dried bast. The man bends the bow with it and shoots a test arrow.

    Abstract: Zwei Frauen aus der Siedlung Tuo auf Fenualoa sammeln herabgefallene Strandkastanien und tragen sie im Korb nach Hause. Dort bereiten sie den Erdofen vor, legen die geschälten Früchte auf die heißen Steine und bedecken sie mit Taroblättern. Die gedünsteten Früchte werden nochmals geschält und dann gegessen.
    Abstract: North of Tuo on Fenualoa (Ngasinue) two women gather beach chestnuts (Inoarpus edulis Forster). Then, on their estate on the west coast of the island, they prepare an earth oven and partly pell the beach chestnuts which are then stewed between the heated stones in the pit, this being finally covered over with leaves. Before the fruit is eaten, the remaining peel (heat protection) is removed.

    Abstract: Eine Frau aus der Siedlung Mbanua fällt einen Papiermaulbeerbaum und zieht die Bastschicht ab. Sie wässert diese einen Tag lang im Meer und treibt dann den Bast mit einem Hartholzschlegel zur Größe eines Hüfttuches auseinander. Zum Abschluß ist die Tragweise des Frauenhüfttuches zu sehen.
    Abstract: In the hinterland of the westerly Graciosa Bay of Ndende, a woman collects from a wild growing paper mulberry tree (Broussonetia papyrifera) the layer of bast growing between the outer bark and the wood part of the trunk. She soaks this for one day in the sea and then expands the bast to the size of a cloth with a beater of hardwood. The "fabric" is then dried in the house. Finally one can see the way the women's loincloth is worn.

    Abstract: Die Reihenfolge beim Backen in dem Gemeindebackofen wird jeweils dienstags durch Auslosung bestimmt. Der Teig wird zu Hause am Vorabend des Backtages aus einer Mischung von Weizen- und Roggenmehl, Wasser und Sauerteig angesetzt. Vor dem Kneten am Backtag kommen Kümmel, Salz und warmes Wasser hinzu. Außer den Broten werden auch Zwiebelkuchen gebacken.
    Abstract: At the beginning of the film the drawing of lots the baking order is shown, because we are concerned with a community baking oven which any member of the community may use. From the preparation of the dough on the eve of the baking day and the heating of the oven, all jobs connected with bread baking are shown.

Zum Schluß rezitiert er ein satirisches Lied über die faulen Weiber.
    Abstract: In the yard of his house, a 78-year old man recounts the tales: "The gypsy and the boyar", "The coachman and the boyar", and "Like head, like cap". At the end he recites a satirical song about lazy women.

    Abstract: Eine Frau aus der Siedlung Laro auf Lomlom löst weiße und schwarze Baststreifen von Bananenstauden und reinigt sie. Dann webt sie auf einem horizontalen Trennstabwebgerät einen Männertanzschurz in Leinenbindung mit eingezogener schwarzer Musterung und Ziergehänge.
    Abstract: At the outskirts of the village of Laro on the island Ngabelipa (Lomlom) a woman loosens white and black strips of bast from banana bushes. She cleans the bast in front of her dwelling with a mussel shell, then puts the supplies in the roof truss to be stored until further weaving. She goes on with the work she has begun on a horizontal weaving loom with separating rod, on which she produces a man's cloth-bound dancing apron. Again and again one can see the changing formation of compartments, the shuttle passing, and the final thread "hitting". The pattern is made by black banana bast fibres being drawn in with a wooden needle. Decorative pendants and ornamental strips of leaf are worked into it.
