    Kurzfassung: Trends in bank profitability and factors affecting it are major indicators of changes in the state of health of national banking systems. This publication complements Banking Statistics: Financial Statements of Banks 2010 which provides a unique tool for analysing developments in bank profitability in OECD countries. In addition to information on financial statements of banks in OECD countries, it includes data on the number of reporting banks, their branches and staff, structural information on the whole financial sector and ratios aiming at facilitating the analysis of bank profitability of OECD countries. The methodological country notes included in this volume were prepared to facilitate the comprehension and the interpretation of the statistics and to provide a brief description of the activities of banks in each country.

    Kurzfassung: Learning for Jobs is an OECD study of vocational education and training (VET) designed to help countries make their VET systems more responsive to labour market needs. The Czech Republic has done much to improve its VET system through the introduction of a new qualification system and a national standardised exam in apprenticeship programmes, among other initiatives. The Czech VET system is supported by an impressive date base on labour market outcomes of education and training. At the same time, the general skills of apprenticeship graduates are poor and their situation in the labour market is fragile. Students also need better information about career choices, and the provision of workplace training is highly variable. The OECD review assesses the main challenges faced by the VET system and presents an interconnected package of policy recommendations. For each recommendation, the report describes the challenge, the recommendation itself, supporting arguments, and issues of implementation.

    Kurzfassung: Institutions whose goal is to help those at the margins have been a feature of social life for centuries. Today, social assistance institutions have integration and encouragement as their goal. They seek to avoid exclusion and stigmatisation.Poverty can tear at the fabric of society. However, preventing hardship among those with no resources while reducing exclusion and marginalisation is no easy task. How can social assistance best balance these goals, minimising disincentives to paid employment? What can be done to promote independence and individual responsibility?This book compares the social assistance policies of Belgium, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands and Norway. Although at first sight these countries appear very different, in fact the same policy dilemmas exist in the four countries. That local action is necessary to identify and help the excluded is accepted, but the balance between ensuring that sufficient resources are available at the local level while limiting budgets so as to ensure efficient use of resources is a continuing preoccupation. Governments stress their commitment to combat poverty, but benefits cannot be raised too high because this would harm work incentives. Different institutions sometimes disagree about whether benefit recipients are "job ready" or whether more social help is needed. No country has yet found a policy package which prevents exclusion, but innovative policies in each of these four countries are proving successful in limiting its extent.

    Kurzfassung: OECD's 2001 review of the Czech Republic's foreign direct investment policies and programmes. It finds that the Czech Republic entered the transition process with a strong industrial heritage and an extensive, but obsolete infrastructure showing the effects of over 40 years of central planning. Throughout the nineties, the extensive reforms undertaken have helped reintegrate the Czech Republic into the global economy through measures such as privatisation and the creation of a favourable and liberal investment climate which has led to a surge in FDI in recent years in particular. The Czech Republic became a Member of the OECD in 1995. The Czech government is committed to addressing the need for further industrial restructuring and to completing the privatisation process which has played a key role in the transformation of the Czech economy and in attracting FDI. With this process virtually completed, the Czech Republic now has the challenge of sustaining FDI inflows in the future through further greenfield projects and reinvestments and improving backward linkages to domestic companies. This review charts the development of FDI in the Czech Republic and evaluates its role in the transition process, assessing the degree of openness of the economy to foreign direct investors.

    Kurzfassung: OECD's review of regulatory reform in the Czech Republic. It finds that since 1990, the Czech Republic has carried out a comprehensive transition to a market democracy that required a rapid and broad programme of deregulation, re-regulation, and institution-building. Today, the legal and policy frameworks consistent with a market economy are substantially in place and functioning. Important challenges remain, however, and reform to fill the remaining gaps and further refine regulatory regimes at national and subnational levels will continue to play a central role in economic development in the Czech Republic. Privatisation, restructuring, and building pro-competition regulatory regimes have been delayed in key areas, such as energy, and reform in telecommunications should be completed. Public sector reform should continue. Speed and consistency are essential. If the Czech Republic is to converge with the rest of Europe, it must move faster than the average European country.

The FDI is a joint initiative of the OECD, the World Bank, USAID, the Council of Europe, The Open Society Institute, UNDP and OECD Member countries to assist transition economies in Central and Eastern Europe in carrying out intergovernmental reforms. In 2000 the surveys took place in six countries: three OECD Member countries, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland, and the three Baltic States, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. In "Fiscal Design Surveys across Levels of Government" OECD Tax Policy Studies, no 7, 2001, the overall concept of the surveys and the comparative results for the six countries are brought.

    Kurzfassung: Heathland beekeeping is one of the oldest rural crafts. All the necessary apicultural operations throughout the year can be experienced on one of the last remaining major skep bee farms in the North German heathlands and on the migration stands in the Lüneburg Heath and Alte Land. The meticulous documentation on swarm apiculture, filmed between 1978 and 1983, is not only of interest to beekeepers, apiculturists and apiologists but is also of value to regional geographers and ethnologists.

    Kurzfassung: Filme 1 bis 4 zeigen die Kontrolle der Standvölker nach der Überwinterung, die Frühjahrswanderung in die Obstplantagen des Alten Landes, die Vorbereitung von Schwarmfangbeuteln und Körben sowie die mehrwöchige Schwarmzeit der Heidebienen: das Abgehen der Vorschwärme mit der alten Königin, die am Flugloch abgefangen werden, und das freie Ausfliegen der Nachschwärme mit ihren jungen Königinnen, die der Imker in Fangkörben sammelt, um mit ihnen den Bestand an Völkern etwa zu verdreifachen. Filme 5 bis 8 zeigen die Vorbereitung der neugebildeten Nachschwarmvölker und der ehemaligen Standvölker und die Wanderung in die Lüneburger Heide, wo rund 1500 Korbvölker auf großen Wanderständen aufgestellt werden, um aus der Heideblüte 4 bis 5 Wochen den Jahresertrag des Heideimkers einzutragen; im Herbst folgen die Auswahl der Standvölker und die Vorbereitung der übrigen Körbe für die Honig- und Wachsgewinnung sowie die Auffütterung der rund 700 Wintervölker; schließlich die Ernte des Heidehonigs, der aus Scheibenhonig und Preßhonig besteht, und die Gewinnung von Wachs. Wie ein Bienenkorb, ein Stülper, aus Roggenstroh und Weidenrutenstreifen hergestellt wurde, wird durch einen 9. Film aus Westfalen deutlich.

    Kurzfassung: Zehn- bis zwölfjährige türkische Kinder spielen und tanzen die in Form und Inhalt überlieferten Kindertänze und Tanzspiele ihres Heimatlandes, praktizieren auf dem Schulhof mit ihren deutschen Mitschülerinnen aber auch die derzeitig in Deutschland gängigen Spiele. Vollständig sind zehn türkische Beispiele dokumentiert: ein Abzählvers, Klatschspiele, Tänze im Kreis (z. B. das Plumpsackspiel) und in Reihen sowie eine Wechselrede.
    Kurzfassung: Ten to twelve year old children of Turkish families perform games and dances with handclapping and expressive movements of the body as well as recitations and singing. The repertory is orginally Turkish and is now also practised in Germany - here on the playground of the German primary school attended by the children. The ten examples presented include a counting-out rhyme, three clapping games and two games in circular formation, a circle dance and two dances in line, and alternating reciting. Besides the Turkish elements the examples show the common patterns of children's repertory and its combination of movement with speech or singing. Moreover in the actual performance common elements of European coherence can be distinguished.

    Kurzfassung: Die mehrwöchige Schwarmzeit der Heidebienen beginnt Anfang Juni mit dem Abgehen der Vorschwärme. In der Imkerei Georg Klindworth in Langenfelde bei Sittensen werden die schwarmbereiten Korbvölker in dem am Gehöft gelegenen Bienenstand gesammelt. Sobald ein Vorschwarm mit der alten Königin den Korb verläßt, fängt der Imker ihn in einem vorgesteckten Schwarmfangbeutel ein. Nachdem die Bienen im Beutel eine Schwarmtraube gebildet haben, werden die Vorschwärme zum Verkauf in Versandkisten gefüllt.

    Kurzfassung: Im Spätherbst wird aus den eingelagerten Honigkörben Heidehonig geerntet. Die Waben werden zerteilt. Sie liefern Scheibenhonig, der abgewogen und eingepackt wird, Wachsstücke (für die Wachsgewinnung) und Honigzellen ohne Deckel. Aus letzteren wird in einer hölzernen Gewindepresse ("Stader Presse") Preßhonig gewonnen; er wird gereinigt und abgefüllt.
    Kurzfassung: In late autumn heather honey is harvested from the skeps stored in the farmstead. The combs are divided. Comb honey is cut, weighed, and packed. Pieces of wax are removed and collected for wax processing. From unsealed honey cells honey is extracted with a wooden Stade-type screw press. The pressed honey is cleared and filled in cans and jars.

    Kurzfassung: A lace-maker from Egerland is working on a lace pillow in horizontal-cylinder form with eight to twenty bobbins. She is showing as well basic patterns of this handicraft as specific elements of her own country of origin: lace, pattern, hand movements, how to work, and execution. The lace-maker makes lace grounds separated from usual motives: rose ground (Rosengrund), in loose and rigid form, virgin ground (Jungfrauengrund), and plait-ground (Flechtgrund). The following samples so called tape laces (Bändchen) in two kinds of cross or twist (Halbschlag or Netzschlag), two whole stitches (Ganzschlag) and whole stitch (Leinenschlag), whole stitch and trellis stitch (Gitterschlag), also trellis stitch, small lace tapes with the elements of spider and oval leaf stitch (ovaler Formschlag). She is showing as well basic patterns of this handicraft as specific elements of her own country of origin: lace, pattern, hand movements, how to work, and execution. After short preparatory work the lace-maker makes a small round lace mat. Different elements: leaf stitch (Formschlag), whole stitch (Leinenschlag), and little spots (Fleckchen), executed in three stages of working, are combined, the spaces between the designs are filled with plaiting (Flechten) and rose ground (Rosengrund).     Kurzfassung: In der Imkerei Georg Klindworth in Langenfelde bei Sittensen wird Ende des Sommers aus Wabenresten Wachs gepreßt: Heizen von Schmelz- und Wasserkessel, Schmelzen des Rohwachses zusammen mit Wasser, Wachspressen in der hölzernen "Stader Presse" mit Hilfe von Preßtüchern, Trennung von Wachs und Wasser im Sammel-Klärbottich, Wachsgießen in Formen, Überarbeiten der Wachsblöcke und Stapeln auf dem Speicherboden.

She is showing as well basic patterns of this handicraft as specific elements of her own country of origin: lace, hand movements, how to work, and execution. The lace-maker stuffs her pillow and then executes, after having attached the specific card-board pattern, several traditional lace tapes of her own country with the motives called ladder (Leiter), serpent (Schlange), galloon (Tresse), little spots (Fleckchen), and spider (Spinne). Finally she makes a lace called Heftspitze ('heften'='to baste'), a combination of different design elements and grounds. (See also the films E 2022, E 2023, E 2090).
