    Abstract: In der für die Filmaufnahme bestellten Aufführung spielen vier Musiker. Gendang keteng-keteng heißt die Besetzung der zeremoniellen Gendang-Musik der Karo-Batak. Sie besteht aus zwei Röhrenzithern Keteng-keteng aus Bambus mit zwei aus der Haut herausgeschälten Saiten, die mit zwei dünnen Stöckchen angeschlagen werden, sowie einer Porzellanschale oder ähnlichem als Gongersatz. Als Melodieinstrument kommt noch eine Flöte oder die Laute Kulcapi hinzu, hier die offene Längsflöte Surdam. Mari-mari (Komm herbei!) wird bei altreligiösen Zeremonien zur Geisteranrufung bei Besessenheitstänzen gespielt.
    Abstract: Four musicians play in the performance booked for the film take. The instrumentation of the ceremonial Gedang music of the Karo-Batak is called Gedang keteng-keteng. It consists of two tube zithers (Keteng-ketend) made of bamboo with two strings peeled out of the skin, which are beaten with two thin sticks, as well as a porcelain dish or something similar as a replacement for a gong. A flute or the Kulcapi lute is added as melody instrument. In this case the open Surdam long flute. The first piece "Mari-mari" (Come over here!) is played in old religious ceremonies to call the ghosts in possession dances.

Das erste Stück gehört zum Repertoire der "fröhlichen" Feste (z. B. Hochzeit), während das zweite bei Totenfeiern gespielt wird.
    Abstract: Six musicians play on the Gonrang bolon (large Gonrang) instrumentation, which is used for ceremonial music, a Sarunei (oboe); six drums and four gongs. The first piece belongs to the repertoir of "happy" festivals (e.g. wedding); whereas the second one is played at obsequies (funeral rites).

    Abstract: Die für die Filmaufnahme bestellten elf Musiker spielen vier Stücke auf dem zur Zeremonialmusik gehörenden Instrumentensatz Genderang, bestehend aus einer Sarunei (Oboe), neun Trommeln, drei Gongs, einer Aufschlagplatte Pongpong und dem Gongspiel Gerantung mit vier horizontal aufgehängten Eisentellern. Die Stücke Gendang dudu pitu kali (Segen siebenmal), Gendang Raja (Gendang für den Raja), Gendang gajah mengiring gajah (Der Gajah [Opferbüffel] führt den Gajah) und Ende-ende juma gulangen (Das Lied von der Bergfarm) werden zur Begleitung der Zeremonialtänze bei Hochzeiten gespielt, das letzte auch bei dem Fest für die Jugend (Pesta muda-mudi).
    Abstract: The eleven musicians chosen for the filmed sequences play four pieces using the Genderang set of instruments that are traditionally used for ceremonial music. It consists of a "Sarunei" (oboe), nine drums, three gongs, a "Pongpong" striking plate and the "Gerantung" gong set with four horizontally suspended iron plates. The "Gedang dudu pitu kalie" (sevenfold blessing) "Gedang Raja" (Gedang for the "Raja"), "Gendang gajah mengiring gajah" (The Gajah [sacrificial buffalo] leads the Gajah) and "Ende-ende juma gulangen" (The Song about the alpine farm) are used to accompany the ceremonial dances at weddings, the last one is also played at the Festival for Youth (Pesta muda-mudi).

Patam-patam, eine schnelle Tanzbegleitung, kann bei jeder offiziellen Festlichkeit erklingen.

    Abstract: Die für die Filmaufnahme bestellten sieben Musiker spielen ein bekanntes Stück der zeremoniellen Gondang-Musik, die heute noch, vor allem bei den Ahnen- und Totenfesten, zur Begleitung der Zeremonialtänze erklingt. Die Besetzung besteht aus einer Sarunei (Oboe), dem Trommelspiel Taganing mit fünf Trommeln, der Baßtrommel Gordang sowie vier Gongs (Ogung) und der Aufschlagplatte Hesek-hesek. Somba-somba bedeutet Anbetung, Verehrung (früher des höchsten Gottes der Batak).
    Abstract: The seven musicians chosen for the filmed sequences play a well-known piece of ceremonial Gondang music that is still played today, primarily at festivals for ancestors and the dead, to accompany the ceremonial dances. The instrumentation consists of a "Sarunei" (oboe), the Taganing drum set with five drums, the Gordang bass drum, as well as four gongs (Ogung) , a "Hesek-hesek" striking plate. Somba-somba means adoration, admiration (in former times of the highest god of the Batak).

    Abstract: Santa Clara del Cobre is a center for handicraft in copper. Today, as in colonial times, copper utensils are beaten into shape. In the 40s the industry expanded to include copper plates and ornaments for town customers. Guadalupe Lucas demonstrates kettle-making, Pablo Pureco, chiselled plate, and Etelberto Ramírez, flower vases. In interviews they explain the development of their craft and the problems they face.

    Abstract: Santa Clara del Cobre ist ein Zentrum handwerklicher Kupferbearbeitung. Noch heute werden, wie in der Kolonialzeit, Kessel aus Kupfer getrieben. Mitte der 40er Jahre begann man außerdem, Kupferplatten und -gefäße vor allem für ein städtisches Publikum zu schmieden. Die Herstellung verschiedener Gefäße zeigen Guadalupe Lucas (Kupferkessel), Pablo Pureco (zisilierte Platten) und Etelberto Ramírez (Blumenvase). In Interviews legen sie die Entwicklung des Handwerks und die aktuellen Probleme dar.

    Abstract: Die Weberinnen von Ahuiran stellen mit Rückengürtelwebgeräten schwarzblaue Rebozos und weiße Tücher her. Besonders wenn die Ehemänner abwesend sind, sind sie auf den Verdienst aus ihrem Handwerk angewiesen. Die finanzielle Lage der Weberinnen wie auch der Käuferinnen führte dazu, daß statt der Baumwolle immer mehr Acrylwolle benutzt wird. Die Frauen arbeiten oft in Gemeinschaft und unterhalten sich dabei. Sie nehmen die Hilfe ihrer Töchter in Anspruch, die so das Handwerk nach und nach erlernen. Verkauft werden die Rebozos in dem nahen Marktort Paracho.

    Abstract: Der vor zwei Jahren verstorbene Mann Hermanto Juris wird anläßlich eines Totenfestes (Tiwah), das 6 Tage lang andauert, endgültig verabschiedet und in das Totenreich geleitet. Die vom Gewohnheitsrecht (Adat) verbindlich vorgeschriebene Zeremonie wird von 6 Priesterinnen (Wadian) durchgeführt. Am Fest beteiligen sich außer der Familie auch die weitere Verwandtschaft, die Freunde und Bekannte.
    Abstract: A death feast is held in Dorong village. The corpse had been buried two years before, hair and nails of the deceased, called rapu, had been placed separately on top of the coffin. This rapu is now dug up, since the family finally have the means to arrange the feast. In the course of the feast the priestesses of the village, wadiam, communicate with the soul of the deceased until now in a transitional realm. Only after the tiwah is performed does the soul leave for the country of the dead, to join the ancestors and remain there definitely. During the tiwah the rapu is kept in the house of the dead man's daughter. Ritual cock-fights, offerings of pigs and chickens accompany the tiwah. The tiwah is performed according to the adat of the Kaharingan religion.

    Abstract: White kerchiefs and dark blue rebozos, made on belt looms, are the main products of the weavers of Ahuiran. Especially during the absence of their husbands, the weavers are dependent on weaving for their income, which has led to the introduction of cheap acrylic wool, helping their sales in the nearby market town of Paracho. The women's work is the social centre of the community and includes their daughters. Thus traditions are passed on.
