    Abstract: In jahrzehntelanger Forschung haben die beiden Wissenschaftler Richard Wilkinson und Kate Pickett empirische Daten gesammelt und ausgewertet, anhand derer sie den Einfluss der Ungleichheit auf eine Vielzahl der drängendsten sozialen Probleme entwickelter Gesellschaften untersuchen. Die geistige und körperliche Gesundheit oder der Drogenkonsum der Mitglieder einer Gesellschaft, Lebenserwartung, Übergewicht, Bildung, die Geburtenrate bei Minderjährigen, die Verbrechensrate und nicht zuletzt die soziale Mobilität: All diese Phänomene hängen statistisch eindeutig davon ab, wie ungleich die Einkommens- und somit Chancenverteilung einer Gesellschaft ist. Ab einem gewissen Einkommensniveau, das etwa auf der Höhe dessen von - ausgerechnet - Kuba liegt, ist es eben nicht mehr die Höhe des Durchschnittseinkommens, die es den Menschen immer bessergehen lässt, sondern die Verteilung des Einkommens. Richard Wilkinson ist einer der international führenden Wissenschaftler auf dem Gebiet der Erforschung von Ungleichheit und sozialen Einflüssen auf die Gesundheit; seine Arbeiten wurden in zehn Sprachen übersetzt. Er hat an der London School of Economics Wirtschaftsgeschichte studiert und dann eine Ausbilung zum Epidemiologen absolviert. Wilkinson ist emeritierter Professor der Nottingham Medical School und Honorarprofessor am University College London. Kate Pickett ist Senior Lecturer an der University of York und forscht am englischen National Institute for Health Research. Sie hat Anthropologie in Cambridge studiert, Ernährungswissenschaften an der Cornell University und Epidemiologie in Berkeley, bevor sie vier Jahre Assistenzprofessorin an der University of Chicago wurde.

    Abstract: This book is a macro-study of Indian business communities in Singapore through different phases of their growth since colonial times. It goes beyond the conventional labour-history approach to study Indian immigrants to Southeast Asia, both in terms of themselves and their connections with the peoples' movements. It looks at how Indian business communities negotiated with others in the environments in which they found themselves and adapted to them in novel ways. It especially brings into focus the patterns and integration of the Indian networks in the large-scale transnational flows of capital, one of the least-studied aspects of the diaspora history in this part of the world. The complexities and overlapping interests of different groups of traders and businessmen form an interesting study of various aspects of these trading bodies, their methods of operation and their trade links, both within and outside Singapore. The book also charts their mobility and progress, in terms of both business and social status. The research aims to construct linear threads of linkages through generations and situate them in the larger framework and broader paradigms of business networks in Singapore.In shedding light on aspects of Indian connectivities to Southeast Asia, the narrative is particularly relevant in the context of India's economic rise.     Abstract: Die Zeremonie (wörtlich übersetzt: 'Reis auf den Kopf legen') wird begangen, wenn jemand wieder in die Gemeinschaft aufgenommen wird. Frau Ginting wird nach einem Krankenhausaufenthalt von Angehörigen am Dorfende empfangen. Nach Segenswünschen werden sie und ihr Ehemann mit Goldschmuck und Zeremonialtüchern geschmückt. Begleitet von Gendang-Musik werden sie zum Haus der Familie geführt. Die Guro Sibaso locken die Lebenskraft (Tendi) zur Stärkung der Frau mit weißen Tüchern an. Auf dem Tanzplatz werden Adat-Tänze getanzt. Mit einem gemeinsamen Essen wird der zeremonielle Teil des Festes abgeschlossen.
    Abstract: The ceremony (literally translated: 'to put rice on the head') is performed at a person's returning to a community. Mrs. Ginting, returning from hospital, is received by her relatives on the border of the village. Blessings are pronounced and she and her husband are decorated with gold jewellery and ceremonial cloths. Accompanied by gendang music, they are conducted to the family's house. The guru sibaso attract with white cloths the vital power (tendi) to strengthen the woman. Adat dances are performed on the dancing-ground. A common meal concludes the ceremonial part of the feast.

    Abstract: Die Teilnehmer der Haarwaschzeremonie (vgl. Film E 2963) treffen im Haus ein. Mit dem ersten Tanz werden die Schutz- und Ahnengeister gebeten, am Fest teilzunehmen. Nach dem Geisteranrufungstanz wird das Festessen eingenommen. Adat-Tänze und weitere Geisteranrufungstänze folgen. Nach einem Orakel mit hartgekochtem Ei werden Unterhaltungstänze getanzt. Zum Tanz spielt eine Gendang-Musikgruppe.
    Abstract: The participants of the hair-washing-ceremony arrive in the house. The first dance is performed to invite the protective and the ancestral spirits to take part in the feast. A dance with invocation of the spirits takes place, followed by the meal. Adat dances and further dances with invocation of the spirits are performed. An oracle with a hard-boiled egg is consulted, followed by entertainment dances. The dances are accompanied by a gendang music group.

    Abstract: Am Vormittag bringen Mitglieder der Familie Sembiring an einem heiligen Platz den Ahnen ein Opfer dar. Zwei Frauen stellen den Kontakt zu den Geistern her. Am Nachmittag wird bei der heiligen Quelle - Wohnsitz eines Ahnengeistes - wiederum ein Opfer dargebracht und die rituelle Haarwaschung durchgeführt. Am Abend und in der Nacht werden im Haus die Zeremonialtänze aufgeführt. Im Verlauf des Festes werden wiederholt Frauen von verschiedenen Geistern, die sich am Fest beteiligen, besessen.
    Abstract: In the morning members of the Sembiring family offer a sacrifice to the ancestors in a holy place. Two women enter in relations to the spirits. In the afternoon a further offering is made at the sacred spring - seat of an ancestor spirit - and a ritual hair-washing takes place. In the evening and in the night the ceremonial dances are performed in the house. In the course of the feast women are repeatedly possessed by different spirits taking part in the feast.

Nach einem Unterhaltungstanz der Frauen und einem Kriegstanz eines alten Mannes schließt der Film die Vorstellung des Dorfes mit der Abendstimmung am Fluß.
    Abstract: After a general description of the village follows a sketch of everyday life: the village school, sowing in the slash and burn clearings, collection of latex, winnowing rice, weaving, the open-air blacksmith, the village shop, cooking and the preparation of betel. The film closes with an entertainment dance (women), an old man's war dance and the atmospheric sunset at the river.

Der 〈i〉parang〈/i〉, der im Alltag als Arbeitswerkzeug dient, wird mit Hilfe einer Schnur um die Taille gebunden.
    Abstract: Haanglireh, the 52-year-old village smith of Padua, and his assistant shape a hewing knife about 50 centimetres long. The work takes three hours and proceeds in the following stages: forging and tempering the blade, grinding the edge, and carving the handle. The 〈i〉parang〈/i〉, used as a tool in everyday life, is attached to a cord about the waist.

    Abstract: Der vor zwei Jahren verstorbene Mann Hermanto Juris wird anläßlich eines Totenfestes (Tiwah), das 6 Tage lang andauert, endgültig verabschiedet und in das Totenreich geleitet. Die vom Gewohnheitsrecht (Adat) verbindlich vorgeschriebene Zeremonie wird von 6 Priesterinnen (Wadian) durchgeführt. Am Fest beteiligen sich außer der Familie auch die weitere Verwandtschaft, die Freunde und Bekannte.
    Abstract: A death feast is held in Dorong village. The corpse had been buried two years before, hair and nails of the deceased, called rapu, had been placed separately on top of the coffin. This rapu is now dug up, since the family finally have the means to arrange the feast. In the course of the feast the priestesses of the village, wadiam, communicate with the soul of the deceased until now in a transitional realm. Only after the tiwah is performed does the soul leave for the country of the dead, to join the ancestors and remain there definitely. During the tiwah the rapu is kept in the house of the dead man's daughter. Ritual cock-fights, offerings of pigs and chickens accompany the tiwah. The tiwah is performed according to the adat of the Kaharingan religion.
