    Abstract: We are spurred into action by our troubles and fears; but all too often our action fails to address the true causes of our worries. When trying to make sense of our lives, we tend to blame our own failings and weaknesses for our discomforts and defeats. And in doing so, we make things worse rather than better. Reasonable beings that we are, how does this happen and why does it go on happening?These are the questions addressed in this new book by Zygmunt Bauman - one of the most original and perceptive social thinkers writing today. For Bauman, the task of sociology is not to censor or correct the stories we tell of our lives, but to show that there are more ways in which our life stories can be told. By bringing into view the many complex dependencies invisible from the vantage point of private experience, sociology can help us to link our individual decisions and actions to the deeper causes of our troubles and fears - to the ways we live, to the conditions under which we act, to the socially drawn limits of our imagination and ambition. Sociology can help us to understand the processes that have shaped the society in which we live today, a society in which individualization has become our fate.     Abstract: In our individualized society we are all artists of life - whether we know it or not, will it or not and like it or not, by decree of society if not by our own choice. In this society we are all expected, rightly or wrongly, to give our lives purpose and form by using our own skills and resources, even if we lack the tools and materials with which artists' studios need to be equipped for the artist's work to be conceived and executed. And we are praised or censured for the results - for what we have managed or failed to accomplish and for what we have achieved and lost. In our liquid modern society we are also taught to believe that the purpose of the art of life should be and can be happiness - though it's not clear what happiness is, the images of a happy state keep changing and the state of happiness remains most of the time something yet-to-be-reached. This new book by Zygmunt Bauman - one of the most original and influential social thinkers writing today - is not a book of designs for the art of life nor a 'how to' book: the construction of a design for life and the way it is pursued is and cannot but be an individual responsibility and individual accomplishment. It is instead a brilliant account of conditions under which our designs-for-life are chosen, of the constraints that might be imposed on their choice and of the interplay of design, accident and character that shape their implementation. Last but not least, it is a study of the ways in which our society - the liquid modern, individualized society of consumers - influences (but does not determine) the way we construct and narrate our life trajectories.

    Abstract: Am Tage des hl. Leonhard (6. Nov.) ziehen Wagen, Reiter und kleine Gruppen zu Fuß von Murnau nach der Leonhardskirche Froschhausen, wo eine Feldmesse abgehalten wird. Danach versammeln sich die Teilnehmer vor der Gastwirtschaft; hier treten auch die Goaßlschnalzer mit ihren langen Peitschen in Aktion.
    Abstract: Since 1927 the St. Leonard's pilgrimage in Murnau has taken place, and it is arranged after the known pilgrimage of Bad Tölz. On the day of St. Leonard (6th November) people on carriages, on horses and others walking in small groups are moving from Murnau to the nerby church St. Leonard in Froschhausen where a camp-service is celebrated on a meadow near the church. After the mass the participants meet in front of the only inn of the village and there perform the so-called Goaßlschnalzer (men with long whips).

    Abstract: The film shows the kalushar group dancing in a farm yard, but the main thing is the performance of the death game. One of the dancers is killed by the mutul, who is then forced by the group to reawake the dead man to life. The game, which seems to be rooted in an earlier transit rite, ends with a dance for all.

    Abstract: Eine Tanzgruppe der sächsischen Minderheit (8 Jungen, 8 Mädchen) zeigt vier Paartänze: Ländler, Spinnrad, Tätscher und Walzer. Zum Tanz spielt das Gemeindeorchester (Akkordeon, Flügelhorn, Baßflügelhorn, Klarinette, Schlagzeug).
    Abstract: The film shows four Saxon folk dances (Ländler, country waltz; Spinnradel, spinning wheel; Tätscher, patting dance; Walzer, waltz) from the parish Großau on the Zibin, performed by eight young couples in the yard of the old parish school. The musical accompaniment is given by the parish orchester with accordion, flügel horn, bass flügel horn, clarinet and prercussion instruments.

    Abstract: Das "Begraben" der Fahne erfolgt auf demselben Hügel wie das Aufrichten. Die hochgestellte Fahnenstange wird losgelassen, die Männer laufen auseinander. Beim Aufschlag der Stange kehren sie um und begrüßen sich gegenseitig, als hätten sie sich lange nicht mehr gesehen. Der Brauch endet mit dem Tanz der Kaluscharen.
    Abstract: The film shows the kalushar group coming from the village and climbing up a hill to conclude the traditional Whitsun rites. The cloth and the herbs are taken down from the "flag", distributed among the kalushars, the flag pole is hoisted up, and at a sign from the mutul it is let go. At that moment the men spring apart and run away in various directions. As soon as the pole hits the ground they turn round and greet each other as though they had not seen each other for a long time. The film ends with the subsequent dancing.

    Abstract: Vor Sonnenaufgang gehen die Frauen auf den Friedhof, wo sie ihre Toten individuell beklagen sowie die Gräber umkreisen und beweihräuchern. Der zweite Besuch im Friedhof erfolgt nach dem Gottesdienst etwa um 11 Uhr. Auf die Gräber werden Blumen, brennende Kerzen und die Totengaben gestellt. Die Zeremonie der kollektiven Totenklage beginnt, wenn die Kirchenglocken ertönen.
    Abstract: The film shows the death laments in the cementery in the village Priseaca (Olt district). The first part shows the laments of the women before sunrise. The second part shows the lamentations in the morning after the church service. Some lamenting women are shown in several parts of the cementery as well as the more passive participation of some men also present at the morning lamentations.

Die gesungenen Partien des fünfteiligen Rituals (Segnung des Platzes, Einladung an das "Dreifache Juwel", Reinigungsopfer, Siebenopfer, gemeinsames Gebet) werden von Becken, Trommeln, Zimbeln und Handglocken begleitet.

    Abstract: Im Dorf Zrazra mimen Krieger der Guro tanzend ihre Funktionen im Kampf: der Häuptling mit seinen drei Fetischen, sein ihn beschützender Bruder, der Wasserträger, der Kopfabschneider, der Kundschafter u. a. Mehrere der Tänzer tragen Gewehre. Drei Musikanten begleiten den Tanz, indem sie auf Hohleisen schlagen.
    Abstract: Old and young Guro warriors do a mime dance of their duties during a fight: e. g. the "Fourrier" who offers palmwine to the thirsty warriors, and especially the great warrior of the village with his three fetishes. The fetishes make certain that his shot will be unfailing, and at the same time protect the warrior against any harm. Three iron bells are rung as an accompaniment.

    Abstract: At the end of the Yams festival, which for the northern Dan separates the old year from the new year, the masks leave the bush and come down from the mountains to the village. They dance outside the village and then move over the country to greet the government officials. On the way each mask shows for our team typical parts from their repertoire.

    Abstract: The Goli is a mask performance of three or four different pairs of masks. The two masks of each pair try to surpass each other in dancing. The musicians accompany their songs with hot rhythms of the rattle-calabash. Although the young Baule learned the Goli from a neighbouring tribe, it became their most important mask performance.

    Abstract: Almost every village of the Baule cultivates an artistic speciality which is performed during festivities either in their own village or in other villages. To this category belong also acrobatic dances. Using difficult jumps, the young men dance, by turns, to the rhythms of three drums, one iron bell, one rattle-calabash and one "rub-rattle". Afterwards two solo-dancers appear.

    Abstract: For various activities, the Dan have groups of singers and musicians, whose playing is supposed to impart special qualities: strength for the bushclearers, majestic deportment for the chieftain, courage for the warrior. Here, an orchestra of seven elephant tusks and five drums incites the fighting-spirit of the village's greatest warrior, who, in dance form, demonstrates several battle situations.

    Abstract: On market-days, the wrestling teams of several villages complete with each other. The wrestlers stand, bent over, head to head, legs spread back as far as possible. They try throw the opponent on his back by grasping his leg, or by pushing him sideways off balance. Each wrestler is accompanied by several seconds who try to defend him with magie and at the same time to harm the rival.

    Abstract: Frisch beschnittene Mädchen üben vor dem Beschneidungslager mit bändergeschmückten Stühlchen Tänze ein. Die Betreuerinnen und später auch die Mädchen singen im Chor. Sie werden von einem Trommler begleitet.
    Abstract: When the girls of the Gere (Kran) enter the excision camp they borrow low chairs from their grandfathers, for after the operation they cannot sit down, but must kneel on these chairs. When they have recovered they create dances with the little chairs, to perform in their village on the day of their release.

    Abstract: Drei Mädchen zwischen vier und sechs Jahren führen, begleitet von zwei Trommeln und einem eisernen Klimperinstrument, akrobatische Tänze vor. Von ihrem "Trainer" werden sie in die Luft geworfen und wie "Schlangen" um seinen Körper gewunden.
    Abstract: Three small girls between four and six years old first perform acrobatic feats with their flexible bodies accompanied by two drums and one tinkle-instrument; afterwards, they will be whirled into the air by their "trainer", an athletic man, and wound around his body, like snakes. Such snake-girls are also found in other villages of the Dan and Gere (Kran) along the western Ivory-coast and in eastern Liberia.
