    Abstract: Das Fahrrad ist das langlebigste und weitest verbreite Fahrzeug der Welt, von dem in seiner zweihundertjährigen Geschichte mehr als eine Milliarde Exemplare gebaut wurden. Dennoch wurde seine Technikgeschichte bisher vernachlässigt, obwohl es mit seiner Idee des Leichtbaus anstelle der tonnenschweren Eisenbahn und der Abkehr vom Pferd neue Konstruktionen, Materialien und Fertigungstechniken ins Leben rief, welche die Basis für Motorrad-, Automobil- und Flugzeugbau bildeten. Erst seit dreißig Jahren haben eine internationale Konferenz und die mikrohistorische Feinarbeit der nationalen Vintage-Vereine quellenbasierte Erkenntnisse gesammelt, die einen neuen Blick auf die Fahrradgeschichte ermöglichen. Dieses Buch bietet erstmals eine länderübergreifende und umfassende Darstellung der technischen und historischen Entwicklung des Fahrrads von den frühesten Laufmaschinen als Reitpferdersatz bis hin zu modernen Rennrädern, Mountainbikes und Liegerädern. Es zeichnet die Entwicklung des Fahrrads auch anhand der einzelnen Komponenten wie Antrieben, Schaltungen, Federungen, Bremsen, Lichtanlagen, Speichenrädern und Luftreifen nach, die von Erfindern und Herstellern hinsichtlich Material, Ergonomie und Fahrphysik zuwege gebracht wurden.     Abstract: Die etwa 2.000 Klein- und Mittelstädte in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland sind ein wichtiger Bestandteil unseres Siedlungsnetzes. In ihnen lebt etwa die Hälfte der Einwohner des Landes. Zentrale Herausforderungen der Stadterneuerung in ihnen, wie der Strukturwandel in Handel und Gewerbe, der Verfall überkommener historischer Substanz, die Zunahme von Leerständen und Problemimmobilien und die allgemein sinkende Vitalität, werden häufig nicht aktiv genug bearbeitet. Vielerorts gibt es zwar sehr aktive Bürger*innen, die sich in Vereinen und informellen zivilgesellschaftlichen Netzwerken organisieren und intensiv in die Stadtentwicklung einbezogen werden wollen, doch Perspektivlosigkeit, Überalterung und Nachwuchsmangel und der Mangel an Ressourcen begrenzen oft ihre Möglichkeiten deutlich. Obwohl in den einzelnen Kommunen ein großer Wissens- und Erfahrungsschatz über neue Verfahren und Instrumente der Stadterneuerung vorhanden ist, sind gute Beispiele aus Klein- und Mittelstädten häufig wenig bekannt und wurden bisher nur in Ansätzen wissenschaftlich untersucht. Hier setzt der vorliegende Band mit seinem inhaltlichen Schwerpunkt auf der Situation der Stadterneuerung in Klein- und Mittelstädten an. Neben eher grundsätzlichen Beiträgen widmet er sich auch Erfahrungen aus der Praxis in ganz unterschiedlichen Förderkontexten. Die Herausgebenden Dr.-Ing. Uwe Altrock ist Professor für Stadterneuerung und Planungstheorie an der Universität Kassel. Dr.-Ing. Detlef Kurth ist Professor für Stadtplanung an der TU Kaiserslautern. Dr.-Ing.     Abstract: Biographical note: Achim Brunnengräber (PD Dr. phil. habil.), geb. 1963, ist Privatdozent an der Freien Universität Berlin im Fachbereich Politik- und Sozialwissenschaften. Er beschäftigt sich am Forschungszentrum für Umweltpolitik mit der politischen Ökonomie der Elektro-Mobilität. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind darüber hinaus die Umwelt-, Energie- und Klimapolitik sowie die Endlager-Governance für hoch radioaktive Reststoffe.     Abstract: In India over the past century, electrification has meant many things: it has been a colonial gift of modern technology, a tool of national integration and political communication, and a means of gauging the country's participation in globalization. Electric lights have marked out places of power, and massive infrastructures have been installed in hopes of realizing political promises. In A Moral Technology, the grids and wires of an urban public utility are revealed to be not only material goods but also objects of intense moral concern. Leo Coleman offers a distinctive anthropological approach to electrification in New Delhi as more than just an economic or industrial process, or a "gridding" of social and political relations. It may be understood instead as a ritual action that has formed modern urban communities and people’s sense of citizenship, and structured debates over state power and political legitimacy.Coleman explores three historical and ethnographic case studies from the founding of New Delhi as an imperial capital city, to its reshaping as a national capital for post-independence India, up to its recent emergence as a contemporary global city. These case studies closely describe technological politics, rituals, and legal reforms at key moments of political change in India, and together they support Coleman’s argument that ritual performances, moral judgments, and technological installations combine to shape modern state power, civic life, and political community.

    Abstract: "The number of bicyclists are increasing in the United States, especially among the working class and people of color. In contrast to the demographics of bicyclists in the United States, advocacy for bicycling has focused mainly on the interests of white, upwardly mobile bicyclists, leading to neighborhood conflicts and accusations of racist planning. In Bike Lanes Are White Lanes, scholar Melody L. Hoffmann argues that the bicycle has varied cultural meaning as a "rolling signifier." That is, the bicycle's meaning changes in different spaces, with different people, and in different cultures. The rolling signification of the bicycle contributes to building community, influences gentrifying urban planning, and upholds systemic race and class barriers. In this study of three prominent U.S. cities--Milwaukee, Portland, and Minneapolis--Hoffmann examines how the burgeoning popularity of urban bicycling is trailed by systemic issues of racism, classism, and displacement.     Abstract: This book seeks to communicate to both a global and local audience, the key attributes of pre-industrial African metallurgy such as technological variation across space and time, methods of mining and extractive metallurgy and the fabrication of metal objects. These processes were transformative in a physical and metaphoric sense, which made them total social facts. Because the production and use of metals was an accretion of various categories of practice, a chaine operatoire conceptual and theoretical framework that simultaneously considers the embedded technological and anthropological factors was used. The book focuses on Africa’s different regions as roughly defined by cultural geography. On the one hand there is North Africa, Egypt, the Egyptian Sudan, and the Horn of Africa which share cultural inheritances with the Middle East and on the other is Africa south of the Sahara and the Sudan which despite interacting with the former is remarkably different in terms of technological practice. For example, not only is the timing of metallurgy different but so is the infrastructure for working metals and the associated symbolic and sociological factors. The cultural valuation of metals and the social positions of metal workers were different too although there is evidence of some values transfer and multi-directional technological cross borrowing. The multitude of permutations associated with metals production and use amply demonstrates that metals participated in the production and reproduction of society. Despite huge temporal and spatial differences there are so many common factors between African metallurgy and that of other regions of the world. For example, the role of magic and ritual in metal working is almost universal be it in Bolivia, Nepal, Malawi, Timna, Togo or Zimbabwe. Similarly, techniques of mining were constrained by the underlying geology but this should not in any way suggest that Africa’s metallurgy was derivative or that the continent had no initiative. Rather it demonstrates that when confronted with similar challenges, humanity in different regions of the world responded to identical challenges in predictable ways mediated as mediated by the prevailing cultural context. The success of the use of historical and ethnographic data in understanding variation and improvisation in African metallurgical practices flags the potential utility of these sources in Asia, Latin America and Europe.     Abstract: The history of artificial cold has been a rather intriguing interdisciplinary subject (physics, chemistry, technology, sociology, economics, anthropology, consumer studies) which despite some excellent monographs and research papers, has not been systematically exploited. It is a subject with all kinds of scientific, technological as well as cultural dimensions. For example, the common home refrigerator has brought about unimaginably deep changes to our everyday lives changing drastically eating habits and shopping mentalities. From the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 21st, issues related to the production and exploitation of artificial cold have never stopped to provide us with an incredibly interesting set of phenomena, novel theoretical explanations, amazing possibilities concerning technological applications and all encompassing cultural repercussions. The discovery of the unexpected and “bizarre” phenomena of superconductivity and superfluidity, the necessity to incorporate macroscopic quantum phenomena to the framework of quantum mechanics, the discovery of Bose-Einstein condensation and high temperature superconductivity, the use of superconducting magnets for high energy particle accelerators, the construction of new computer hardware, the extensive applications of cryomedicine, and the multi billion industry of frozen foods, are some of the more dramatic instances in the history of artificial cold

Aufbauend auf neueren methodischen Ansätzen der Raumsoziologie geht Benjamin Schenk der Neuordnung sozialer Räume im Zeitalter der Dampfmaschine nach. Damit leistet er einen wichtigen Beitrag zu aktuellen Debatten über die Geschichte räumlicher Ordnungen in Europa und die Spezifika von Russlands Aufbruch in die Moderne. Frithjof Benjamin Schenk ist Professor für Osteuropäische Geschichte an der Universität Basel. Nach dem Studium der Osteuropäischen Geschichte, Neueren und Neuesten Geschichte und Volkswirtschaftslehre in Marburg, Berlin (FU) und St. Petersburg arbeitete er als wissenschaftlicher Assistent und Dilthey-Fellow der Volkswagenstiftung an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. Zu seinen Forschungsschwerpunkten zählen die Geschichte von Erinnerung und Konzepten kollektiver Identität in Russland und Ostmitteleuropa, kognitive Karten (Mental Maps), Mobilitäts- und Raumgeschichte, vergleichende Imperiengeschichte, Autobiografik sowie die Geschichte politischer Gewalt.

    Abstract: Um das westliche Bündnis im Ost-West-Konflikt nach innen zu stabilisieren, setzten die USA auf auswärtige Kultur- und Informationspolitik. In der Bundesrepublik wandten sich etwa 20 Amerikahäuser und Deutsch-Amerikanische Institute an die westdeutsche Bevölkerung, um Sympathien für die Politik und die Werte der USA zu erzeugen. Sie waren jedoch nicht nur Mittler im amerikanischen Auftrag, sondern durch vielfältige Beziehungen fest in der westdeutschen Kulturlandschaft verankert. In der Öffentlichkeit standen sie als symbolische Orte für "Amerika" – im positiven wie im negativen Sinne. Reinhild Kreis analysiert die Strukturen, Zielvorgaben und das Instrumentarium der amerikanischen Kultur- und Informationspolitik in der Bundesrepublik, Themenkarrieren und -konjunkturen sowie die Amerikahäuser und DAI in ihren lokalen Beziehungsgefügen.     Abstract: Nel giugno del 1783 i fratelli Montgolfier aprirono la via delle nuvole con un mezzo 'più leggero dell'aria', la mongolfiera, 120 anni dopo, altri due fratelli, Wilbur e Orville Wright, conquistarono la terza dimensione con un mezzo 'più pensate dell'aria', l'aeroplano. Due modi differenti per raggiungere quello che Wilbur definì 'il più grande desiderio dell'umanità': volare. In questa breve storia del volo, vengono raccontate le gesta di quanti con ardore e follia, criterio e scelleratezza hanno tentato la via dei cieli: sono quei temerari che per guadagnarsi il sogno hanno messo in conto ossa rotte e cadute rovinose. Di alcuni è rimasta la gloria e il ricordo scolpito nella storia, ad altri un nome perduto nelle cronache di un tempo che fu. E quando a inizio Novecento si diffondono i primi brevetti di pilota, l'era pionieristica del volo inizia a volgere al termine. Ma per quei temerari a bordo di macchine volanti questo significa solo compiere imprese sempre più ardite lungo la via delle nuvole.

    Abstract: The HMMM2008 International Symposium on History of Machines and Mechanisms is the third event of a series started in 2000 as the main activity of the IFToMM Permanent commission for History of MMS, Mechanism and Machine Science. The aim of History of Machines and Mechanisms conferences is to establish an international forum for presenting and discussing historical developments in the field of Mechanism and Machine Science (MMS). The subject area covers all aspects of the development of HMM, such as machines, mechanisms, kinematics, design methods, etc., that are related to people, events, objects, indeed, anything that assisted in the development of the HMM, and is presented in the form of reasoning and arguments, demonstration and identification, and description and evaluation. The HMM2008 Proceedings contain 26 papers by authors from all over the world. The topics include historical development on mechanism and machine theory, historical figures and their works, history of mechanical engineering, ancient machines and mechanisms, reconstruction design of ancient devices, mechanism and machine design, and engineering education.     Abstract: Little is known of Soviet and Russian lunar exploration although, in fact, the Soviet Union/Russia: Sent the first spaceships past the moon, the first to hit the moon and the first to circle the moon Was first to soft land on and orbit the moon Was first to send a spaceship around the moon and recover it on Earth Came very close to sending a cosmonaut around the moon first Built and successfully tested, in Earth orbit, a lunar lander Pioneered sophisticated, precise high-speed reentries into the Earth's atmosphere Came close to perfecting a giant moon rocket, the N-1 Retrieved three sets of rock samples from the moon by automatic spacecraft Landed advanced roving laboratories that explored the moon for months on end, traveling 48km Designed long-term lunar bases. These were remarkable achievements requiring a considerable level of engineering sophistication and have a place in the contemporary story of astronautics. Recent landings on Mars use, essentially, the very techniques developed by Russia to land on and explore the moon in the 1960s and 1970s. These include those of the cosmonaut squad that trained to land on the moon, but was stood down, and of the designers who tried to realise the dream of a Russian moon, from Tikhonravov to Mishin: a Soviet lunar programme was first proposed by designer Mikhail Tikhonravov in a children’s magazine in 1951 and he persuaded a sceptical Soviet leadership of the value of a moon programme. Following Sputnik, the first lunar flights quickly achieved the key goals of hitting, circling and photographing the moon in 1959. The Soviet Union achieved all the early ‘firsts’ in lunar exploration, such as soft landing and orbiting the moon, and Brian Harvey will recount the frantic efforts to rival America’s Apollo and the dramatic hours of 21st July 1969, when Russia tried to soft land Luna 15 in the Sea of Crises even as Armstrong and Aldrin explored the moon in the nearby Sea of Tranquility

    Abstract: Ironically, the loss of Challenger in January 1986 fired my interest in space exploration more than any other single event. I was nine years old. My parents were, at the time, midway through moving house and, luckily, the TV was one of the few domestic items still to be packed. I watched the entire horror unfold live on all of the network stations. Admittedly, my fascination with rockets and astronauts, stars and planets had begun several years earlier, but Challenger's destruction turned it from an occasional hobby to a fascination which has remained with me ever since. In September 1988, aged 11,1 came home from school to watch STS-26 return the Shuttle fleet to orbital operations. Five years later, I gave a speech on the STS-51L disaster to my teacher as part of my GCSE English assessment. Another decade passed and, now a teacher myself, I returned to my school one cold Monday morning to explain to my pupils what had happened to Challenger's sister ship, Columbia, a few days earlier. In some ways, the loss of Columbia affected me more deeply than Challenger
