    Abstract: The Question for Twentieth-Century China has been the integration of tradition and modernity. In this collection of essays written over a period of some twenty years (1987-2006), Chen Lai reflects on the question in an informative and original way. He reads behind the political slogans and engages with the thought both of Max Weber, Talcott Parsons and Western sociology, and representative Chinese thinkers, notably Feng Youlan and Liang Shuming. While the focus is on China, the book also appeals to anyone interested in this fascinating question of how to modernise whilst retaining the positive values of tradition. Chen Lai’s unique and balanced grasp of society marks him out as the foremost thinker in China on this topic today

    Abstract: This anthology provides insightful data on and discussions of a wide array of popular cultural manifestations and theoretical perspectives, covering such issues as kinship, religion, conflict resolution, music, cinema, drama, and literary texts. The issues cohere around the understanding that culture is situational and political. Going beyond merely challenging popular stereotypes and representations of Africans and African related practices in various outlets, the book reveals how popular cultural practices are instruments that have been manipulated for personal and collective survival. The book is distinctive in its codification and explication of aspects of popular practices that are based on data from countries in Africa, Europe, and the Americas that showcase cultural negotiations either with reference to how notions, values, norms, and images of Africans have been packaged and exploited over the years or how popular cultures are used as tools of resistance and agitation by the various focal groups that are discussed. The topics are presented and illustrated in ways easily accessible to readers of all backgrounds. Toyin Falola is the Frances Higginbotham Nalle Centennial Professor in History at the University of Texas at Austin as well as a University Distinguished Teaching Professor. Augustine Agwuele is an assistant professor of linguistics in the Department of Anthropology, Texas State University, San Marcos.     Abstract: This is an innovative interdisciplinary book about objects and people within museums and galleries. It addresses fundamental issues of human sensory, emotional and aesthetic experience of objects. The chapters explore ways and contexts in which things and people mutually interact, and raise questions about how objects carry meaning and feeling, the distinctions between objects and persons, particular qualities of the museum as context for person-object engagements, and the active and embodied role of the museum visitor. Museum Materialities is divided into three sections - Objects, Engagements and Interpretations - and includes a foreword by Susan Pearce and an afterword by Howard Morphy. It examines materiality and other perceptual and ontological qualities of objects themselves; embodied sensory and cognitive engagements - both personal and across a wider audience spread - with particular objects or object types in a museum or gallery setting; notions of aesthetics, affect and wellbeing in museum contexts; and creative and innovative artistic and museum practices that seek to illuminate or critique museum objects and interpretations. Phenomenological and other approaches to embodied experience in an emphatically material world are current in a number of academic areas, most particularly strands of material culture studies within anthropology and cognate disciplines. Thus far, however, there has been no concerted application of this kind of approach to museum collections and interactions with them by museum visitors, curators, artists and researchers. Bringing together essays by scholars and practitioners from a wide disciplinary and international base, Museum Materialities seeks to make just such a contribution. In so doing it makes a valuable and original addition to the literature of both material culture studies and museum studies.

As the Qajar dynasty sought to integrate the peoples on its margins into the state, the British Empire made commercial inroads into the once inaccessible mountains on the frontier between Iran and Iraq. The distance between the state and the tribes was narrowed through imperial projects that included the building of a road through the mountains, the gathering of geographical and ethnographic information, and the exploration for oil, which culminated during the Iranian Constitutional Revolution. These modern projects assimilated autonomous pastoral nomadic tribes on the peripheries of Qajar Iran into a wider imperial territory and the world economy. Tribal subjects did not remain passive amidst these changes in environment and society, however, and projects of empire in the hinterlands of Iran were always mediated through encounters, accommodation, and engagement with the tribes. In contrast to the range of literature on the urban classes and political center in Qajar Iran, Arash Khazeni adopts a view from the Bakhtiyari tents on the periphery. Drawing upon Persian chronicles, tribal histories, and archival sources from London, Tehran, and Isfahan, this book opens new ground by approaching nineteenth-century Iran from its edge and placing the tribal periphery at the heart of a tale about empire and assimilation in the modern Middle East. --From publisher's description

    Abstract: Wie ist die Auswärtige Kultur- und Bildungspolitik in schnell wachsenden Städten zu gestalten? Welchen konkreten Mehrwert schafft Kulturarbeit in Konflikten? Wie lassen sich globale Netzwerke verbessern, und welche Rolle spielen Emotionen dabei? Welche Rolle können Kultur- und Bildungspolitik als klimapolitische Instrumente spielen? Welche Ziele und Inhalte soll das Deutschlandjahr 2011 in Indien verfolgen? Inwieweit lässt sich der Sport noch stärker für außenkulturpolitische Zwecke einsetzen? Diesen Fragen ging die Konferenz des Auswärtigen Amts im April 2009 nach. Mehr als vierhundert Teilnehmer aus Kultur, Politik, Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft und Medien bilanzierten in fünf Panels die Fortschritte der Auswärtigen Kultur- und Bildungspolitik in den ersten Jahren der Großen Koalition und thematisierten die außenkulturpolitischen Herausforderungen für die kommenden Jahre. In der Abschlussdiskussion zum Thema „My Space Deutschland - über Deutschland im 21. Jahrhundert“ stellten Minh-Khai Phan-Thi, Mely Kiyak, Jana Hensel, Roman Paul, Jocelyn B. Smith und Steffen Möller ihr Bild von Deutschland vor und diskutierten über die Identitäten der Deutschen und der in Deutschland lebenden Ausländer und Migranten. (ifa)

    Abstract: This volume forms a unique and remarkable enterprise in the context of contemporary Japanese literature, social studies and the nature of Japanese society.     Abstract: This text introduces students, scholars, and interested educated readers to the issues of human memory broadly considered, encompassing both individual memory, collective remembering by societies, and the construction of history. The book is organised around several major questions: How do memories construct our past? How do we build shared collective memories? How does memory shape history? This volume presents a special perspective, emphasising the role of memory processes in the construction of self-identity, of shared cultural norms and concepts, and of historical awareness. Although the results are fairly new and the techniques suitably modern, the vision itself is of course related to the work of such precursors as Frederic Bartlett and Aleksandr Luria, who in very different ways represent the starting point of a serious psychology of human culture

    Abstract: This collection, dealing with case studies drawn from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Mauritius, examines the relationship between scientific claims and practices, and the exercise of colonial power. It challenges conventional views that portray science as a detached mode of reasoning with the capacity to confer benefits in a more or less even-handed manner. That science has the potential to further the collective good is not fundamentally at issue, but science can also be seen as complicit in processes of colonial domination. Not only did science assist in bolstering aspects of colonial power and exploitation, it also possessed a significant ideological component: it offered a means of legitimating colonial authority by counter-poising Western rationality to native superstition and it served to enhance the self-image of colonial or settler elites in important respects. Export processing zones such as Batam are both celebrated and vilified in contemporary debates on economic globalization. The Anxieties of Mobility moves beyond these dichotomies to explore the experiences of migrants and tourists who pass through Batam. Johan Lindquist's extensive fieldwork allows him to portray globalization in terms of relationships that bind individuals together over long distances rather than as a series of impersonal economic transactions. He offers a unique ethnographic perspective, drawing together the worlds of factory workers and prostitutes, migrants and tourists, and creating a compelling account of everyday life in a borderland characterized by dramatic capitalist expansion. The book uses three Indonesian concepts (merantau, malu, liar) to shed light on the mobility of migrants and tourists on Batam. The first refers to a person's relationship with home while in the process of migration. The second signifies the shame or embarrassment felt when one is between accepted roles and emotional states. The third, liar, literally means "wild" and is used to identify those who are out of place, notably squatters, couples in premarital cohabitation, and prostitutes without pimps. These sometimes overlapping concepts allow the book to move across geographical and metaphorical boundaries and between various economies. The Anxieties of Mobility is an ideal text for courses dealing with gender, globalization, and anthropology

    Abstract: Why is national identity such a potent force in people's lives? And is the force positive or negative? In this thoughtful and provocative book, Elizabeth Theiss-Morse develops a social theory of national identity and uses a national survey, focus groups, and experiments to answer these important questions in the American context. Her results show that the combination of group commitment and the setting of exclusive boundaries on the national group affects how people behave toward their fellow Americans. Strong identifiers care a great deal about their national group. They want to help and to be loyal to their fellow Americans. By limiting who counts as an American, though, these strong identifiers place serious limits on who benefits from their pro-group behavior. Help and loyalty are offered only to 'true Americans,' not Americans who do not count and who are pushed to the periphery of the national group

    Description / Table of Contents: In Zeiten transkultureller Bewegungen erweist sich die Literatur, die sich aus verschiedenen Gründen nicht in nationale Grenzen einpassen lässt, als ein zentrales Untersuchungsfeld: Kulturelle Veränderungen, die durch Migration von Menschen, Ideen, Waren und Sprachen entstehen, lassen sich hier auf eine umfassende Weise analysieren. In aktuellen Fallstudien untersuchen die Beiträge dieses Bandes unter anderem kulturelle Grenzziehungen in muslimischen bzw. türkischen Gemeinschaften und setzen sich dabei mit dem neuen »Zwang zur Kultur« auseinander. Daran anschließend wird der Begriff »Weltliteratur« auf seine Brauchbarkeit in diesen Kontexten untersucht, insbesondere im Hinblick auf nicht-europäische, etwa afrikanische Repräsentationsmodelle von Literatur. Einzelanalysen von Filmen und literarischen Texten zeigen, dass die so genannte Migrationsliteratur eine ästhetische Reflexion auf kulturelle Integration einerseits, aber auch auf verschiedene Formen von sozialer, individueller und sprachlicher Desintegration andererseits ist.     Abstract: Mit dem postindustriellen Umbau der Stadt seit Ende der 1970er Jahre bestimmen Bewegung und Sport das Bild des öffentlichen Raumes. Die theatralisierte und musealisierte Innen-Stadt bietet sich als Bühne für Bewegungsspiele, Tanz und Trendsportarten an und dient als Kulisse für prestigeträchtige Sportevents. Stadien wandeln sich von funktionalen Sportstätten zu agonalen Repräsentationsräumen der postindustriellen Gesellschaft. Die Konzentration der Städte auf eventisierten Sport im Zuge globaler städtischer Konkurrenzkämpfe hat aber auch eine Kehrseite - sie bewirkt eine Vernachlässigung der Bewegungsräume in marginalisierten Stadtteilen. Der interdisziplinär ausgerichtete Band will dieses Spannungsfeld zwischen bebauter Umwelt und Bewegungsaktivitäten zum Thema machen und damit einen - bislang in der Stadtforschung und in der Bewegungsforschung wenig beachteten - Blick auf das Verhältnis zwischen der Wahrnehmung und Bewegungserfahrung der städtischen Akteure und dem urbanen Raum werfen

    Abstract: Nach einer langen Geburtsvergessenheit kündigt sich eine Wiederkehr der Geburt in den Kultur- und Sozialwissenschaften an, die durch gravierende Veränderungen im kollektiven und individuellen Imaginären und durch Umbrüche in den Praktiken, Erzählungen und Bildern der Geburt bestimmt wird. Die Geburt gewinnt eine neue Sichtbarkeit in den Medien und in der Öffentlichkeit, zu der auch das medizinische System mit seinen Techniken der Sichtbarmachung des Unsichtbaren beiträgt. Einerseits verstärkt die Professionalisierung der Geburtshilfe die Angst vor der mit der Geburt verbundenen Ungewissheit; andererseits trägt sie zur Erhöhung der Sicherheit von Mutter und Kind bei. Wurde die Geburt von Nachkommen als Ausdruck weiblicher Potenz und Kompetenz begriffen und lange an Eheschließung und Familie gebunden, so vollzieht sich gegenwärtig eine Pluralisierung und Individualisierung der Geburt und der familiären Lebensformen mit der Entstehung neuer konfliktreicher Arbeits-, Lebens-, Gender- und Beziehungsformen

    Abstract: This is the first major publication in the West to study modernity and its impact on contemporary Tibet.     Abstract: This book is a fascinating study of the Vietnamese experience and memory of the Vietnam War through the lens of popular imaginings about the wandering souls of the war dead. These ghosts of war play an important part in postwar Vietnamese historical narrative and imagination, and Heonik Kwon explores the intimate ritual ties with these unsettled identities which still survive in Vietnam today as well as the actions of those who hope to liberate these hidden but vital historical presences from their uprooted social existence. Taking a unique approach to the cultural history of war, he introduces gripping stories about spirits claiming social justice and about his own efforts to wrestle with the physical and spiritual presence of ghosts. Although these actions are fantastical, this book shows how examining their stories can illuminate critical issues of war and collective memory in Vietnam and the modern world more generally

    Abstract: The modern history of Ladakh has been profoundly shaped by influences from South Asia and beyond. In detailed empirical case-studies the contributors document and analyse change and continuities in this region brought about by colonialism, independence and modernisation. In an introductory review essay highlighting emerging themes and continuing debates in the scholarship on Ladakh, the editors argue for the need to situate Ladakh in an Indian and South Asian context, while also taking into account its cultural, linguistic and historical ties with Tibet. Studies from the neighbouring (sub)regions of Kargil, Ladakh, Zangskar and Baltistan are brought together to make an important contribution to the anthropological and sociological literature on development and modernity, as well as to Ladakh, Tibetan and South Asian studies

    Abstract: Fast zwei Jahrzehnte lang haben die deutschen Museen hohe Anpassungs- und Modernisierungsleistungen erbracht - von neuen Wegen der finanziellen Ressourcen-Mobilisierung über managementgeleitete Formen der Organisation und Betriebsführung bis hin zur Verbesserung von Kundenorientierung und Servicequalität. Ihre politische Legitimation als Institution konnte damit allerdings nicht nachhaltig gestärkt werden. Im Gegenteil: Allerorten werden die Strukturen und die Substanz der Einrichtungen brüchiger.Aber sind die Herausforderungen, mit denen sich Museen zunehmend konfrontiert sehen, nur Folge der strukturellen Finanzkrise unserer öffentlichen Haushalte? Werden die Probleme nur dadurch verursacht, dass man museumsbezogene Leistungen und Angebote einseitig an betriebswirtschaftlichen Kriterien misst? Oder haben die Museen bei aller Anpassung an die tatsächlichen bzw. vermeintlichen »Sachzwänge« des Marktes nicht häufig versäumt, sich Gedanken über Grundlagen und Zielsetzungen, Inhalte und Konzepte ihrer Arbeit zu machen?Dieser Band will das Bewusstsein dafür schärfen, dass eine ständige Erweiterung und Steigerung der Angebote nicht zwangsläufig zu mehr Besuchern, zur Erschließung neuer Publikumssegmente und zur Stärkung des »Standings« der Museen bei Trägern und Öffentlichkeit führt.     Abstract: This volume takes examples from Morocco, Egypt, Palestine, Iraq, Syria and Germany to demonstrate the potential and the limitations of youth research in the Arab world and beyond. The study of young adults is still underdeveloped as an area of research. Despite growing awareness of its vital significance since September 11th, not a single comprehensive youth study exists for an Arab country. Current research is often scattered, partly inaccessible, and to a great extent concentrates on specialized topics.
    Abstract: It is crucial, not merely for Arab societies, to know more about the attitude of almost two-thirds of the Arab population to social and political issues. Apart from one qualitative contribution on young men in Iraq, the volume focuses less on data analysis than on data collection and methodology in very difficult surroundings. The majority of Arab states do not allow opinion surveys to be conducted in their countries. Both major inter-national research centres and individual researchers have had severe problems.

Imaginäre Topografien etablieren dabei ein Netz von Bedeutungen, in dem Räume und Raumlogiken entstehen und Migrationsformen als kulturelle Raumpraktiken für einzelne Subjekte, auch für Staaten signifikant werden können. An dieser Raumkonstitution sind heute neben Schrift- verstärkt auch Bild- und Klangmedien beteiligt.Aus einer kulturwissenschaftlichen Perspektive wird daher die Entstehung imaginärer Topografien im Kontext verschiedener Mediensysteme als ein jeweils politisch relevanter Akt zwischen Selbst- oder Fremdbestimmung untersucht

    Abstract: Die Publikation dokumentiert die Ergebnisse des Projektes, das die Schader-Stiftung gemeinsam mit dem Deutschen Städtetag, dem GdW Bundesverband deutscher Wohnungs- und Immobilienunternehmen sowie den wissenschaftlichen Instituten Deutsches Institut für Urbanistik -Difu- und InWIS seit Anfang 2004 mit Förderung des Bundesministeriums für Bildung und Forschung durchgeführt hat. Die Förderung der Integration von Migranten in städtischen Wohnquartieren steht im Zentrum des Verbundprojektes. Die "Empfehlungen zur stadträumlichen Integrationspolitik'' des Expertenforums wurden von den Kommunen des Praxis-Netzwerks genutzt, um eigene Strategien und Maßnahmen vor Ort zu prüfen und weiter zu entwickeln. Die Begleiforschung untersucht den Anstoß und die Implementation der Projekte in den Städten und die Kommunikations- und Akteursstrukturen, die zu ihrer Umsetzung geführt haben. Im Rahmen eines zweitägigen Kongresses am 28./29. September 2006 wurden die Ergebnisse der Praxisphase des Projektes der Fachöffer lichkeitvorgestellt und erörtert. Wissenschaftliche Beiträge externer Autoren ergänzen die Projektergebnisse, z. B. zu Siedlungsstrukturen von Migranten oder den Kontexteffekten sozialräumlicher Segregation. Darüber hinaus erläutern die Städte Essen, Frankfurt am Main und Nürnberg die Steuerung ihrer jeweiligen kommunalen Integrationspolitik.
