    Abstract: Häusliche Gewalt betrifft nicht nur das von der Misshandlung betroffene Familienmitglied, in der Regel die Mutter, sondern auch die Kinder, die die Gewalt sehen, hören oder mit ihren Folgen konfrontiert sind und in einer von Gewalt geprägten Atmosphäre aufwachsen. Es fasst den theoretischen Hintergrund zusammen und berichtet über den aktuellen Stand der Forschung zu den Auswirkungen häuslicher Gewalt auf Kinder. Hauptsächlich jedoch liegt der Fokus auf Interviews mit Betroffenen, die - Jahre später - über das Erlebte sprechen. Das sensibel ausgewertete Interviewmaterial gibt z.B. Aufschluss über Coping-Strategien und Ressourcen, liefert aber auch tiefe Einsichten in die Auswirkungen, die diese Kindheitserlebnisse auf die Identitätsentwicklung der jungen Erwachsenen hatten.

    Abstract: Serious Games provides a thorough exploration of the claim that playing games can provide learning that is deep, sustained and transferable to the real world. "Serious games" is defined herein as any form of interactive computer-based game software for one or multiple players to be used on any platform and that has been developed to provide more than entertainment to players. With this volume, the editors address the gap in exisiting scholarship on gaming, providing an academic overview on the mechanisms and effects of serious games. Contributors investigate the psychological mechanisms that take place not only during gaming, but also in game selection, persistent play, and gaming impact. The work in this collection focuses on the desirable outcomes of digital game play.     Abstract: Climate change is arguably the most profound challenge facing the international community in the 21st century. It is as much a challenge for poverty reduction, growth and development as it is a global environmental issue. It could undermine or reverse progress in reducing poverty and attaining the Millenium Development Goals, thereby unraveling many of the development gains of recent decades. It already threatens the livelihoods, health and well-being of millions of people worldwide, and of the poorest and most vulnerable groups in particular. And it has potentially far-reaching implications for international relations and for personal, national and regional security.While significant uncertainties still remain, tremendous strides have been made over recent years in improving scientific understanding of the human processes driving global climate change and the likely impacts on world ecosystems. What is much less well understood is how these dynamics in the physical environment will interact with those of socio-economic systems, what the consequences will be for society, and how best to address them. In order to focus attention on these previously neglected and poorly understood social dimensions of climate change, the World Bank convened an international workshop in March, 2008, with the participation of community activists, former heads of state, leaders of Indigenous Peoples, representatives of non-governmental organizations, international researchers, and staff of the World Bank and other international development agencies. This edited volume brings together revised versions of many of the papers presented during that workshop, as an initial step in taking stock of existing knowledge on the social dimensions of climate change. Several new papers were also commissioned for this volume.

    Abstract: 9/11 and its aftermath have shown that our ideas about what constitutes sovereign power lag dangerously behind the burgeoning claims to rights and recognition within and across national boundaries. New configurations of sovereignty are at the heart of political and cultural transformations globally. Sovereign Bodies shifts the debate on sovereign power away from territoriality and external recognition of state power, toward the shaping of sovereign power through the exercise of violence over human bodies and populations. In this volume, sovereign power, whether exercised by a nation-state or by a local despotic power or community, is understood and scrutinized as something tentative and unstable whose efficacy depends less on formal rules than on repeated acts of violence.     Abstract: Documentary Testimonies examines documentary films that compel us to bear witness, move us to anger or tears, and possibly mobilize us to action. Comprising ten new essays and a substantive introduction, this interdisciplinary volume examines audiovisual testimonial practices, forms, and institutions. Topics include: technologies of capture, storage and circulation; problems of historical veracity/frail memory; generation of video archives--official, renegade, and ephemeral; limits and potentialities of documentary as public record; architectonics of memory; ethics of witnessing and commemoration; human rights and activist publics. The essays provide in-depth analysis of archives of social suffering tied to particular locales: Cambodia, Chiapas, Darfur, India, Indonesia, Korea, New Orleans, Norway, Rwanda, South Africa, and Washington, DC. The contributors focus on the generation and use of testimony by public administrators and institutions, human rights activists, documentary filmmakers, and others with interest in environmental justice, human rights, social advocacy, and the commemoration/prevention of genocide. Thus, this volume aims to investigate, from a critical and translocal perspective, testimony as social practice.

    Abstract: What is it about the history, geographical position and cultures of the Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia that has made music such a potent and powerful agent? This volume presents the first direct look at the complex relationship between music and power across a range of musical genres and countries. Discourses of power in the region centre on some of the most contested social issues, most notably in relation to nationhood, gender and religion. Individual chapters examine the ways in which music serves as a forum for playing out issues of power, ideology, resistance and subversion. How does music become a space for promoting - or conversely, resisting or subverting - particular ideologies or positions of authority? How does it accrue symbolic power in ways that are very particular, perhaps unique? And how does music become a site of social control or, alternatively, a vehicle for agency and empowerment, at times overt and at others highly subtle? What is it about music that facilitates, and sometimes disrupts, the exercise and flows of power? Who controls such flows, how and for what purposes?In asking such questions in the context of countries such as Afghanistan, Egypt, Iran, Tunisia and Tajikistan, the book draws on a wide range of relevant theoretical and critical ideas, and many disciplines including ethnomusicology, anthropology, sociology, politics, Middle Eastern studies, globalization studies, gender studies and cultural and media studies. The countries and areas explored share a great deal in historical and cultural terms, including a legacy of colonial and neo-colonial encounters and predominantly Judeo-Muslim religious traditions. It is hoped that the volume will contribute ultimately to a richer understanding of the role that music plays in these societies.

    Abstract: Creativity has become part of the language of regeneration experts, urban planners and government policy makers attempting to revive the economic and cultural life of cities in the 21st century. Concepts such as the creative class, the creative industries and bohemian cultural clusters have come to dominate thinking about how creativity can contribute to urban renewal. Spaces of Vernacular Creativity offers a critical perspective on the instrumental use of arts and creative practices for the purposes of urban regeneration or civic boosterism. Several important contributions are brought into one volume to examine the geography of locally embedded forms of arts and creative practice. There has been an explosion of interest in both academic and policy circles in the notion of creativity, and its role in economic development and urban regeneration. This book argues for a rethinking of what constitutes creativity, foregrounding non-economic values and practices, and the often marginal and everyday spaces in which creativity takes shape. Drawing on a range of geographic contexts including the U.S., Europe, Canada and Australia, the book explores a diverse array of creative practices ranging from art, music, and design to community gardening and anticapitalist resistance. The book examines working class, ethnic and non-elite forms of creativity, and a variety of creative spaces, including rural areas, suburbs and abandoned areas of the city.     Abstract: Repräsentative empirische Studien über Ausländer sind selten. Vor diesem Hintergrund liefert die Untersuchung von Claudio Caballero auf Basis der Mainzer Ausländerstudie mit fast 1800 Befragten wertvolle Erkenntnisse über Integrationsformen und grundlegende politische Einstellungen von in Deutschland lebenden Ausländern. Die Befürwortung demokratischer Prinzipien sowie die Akzeptanz politischer Institutionen und Akteure konstituieren die Unterstützung des politischen Systems. Der Autor zeigt, dass ein zwar differenzierter, aber dennoch klar positiver Zusammenhang zwischen gesellschaftlicher Integration und politischer Unterstützung besteht. Hier aufgewachsene Ausländer können prinzipiell einen ähnlichen Sozialisationsprozess wie deutsche Staatsbürger durchlaufen, was die Herausbildung eines vergleichbaren, systemstabilisierenden Sets an Grundeinstellungen wahrscheinlich werden lässt. Hingegen können Ausländer als Folge von Integrationsdefiziten negative Einstellungen gegenüber dem politischen System aufweisen. Der Integrationsförderung kommt insofern eine entscheidende Bedeutung zu, als sie langfristig zur Entwicklung von politischer Unterstützung und somit zur Stabilisierung des politischen Systems beiträgt.

    Abstract: Warum stört sich beim Fußball eigentlich niemand daran, wenn Franz Beckenbauer über die „angeborene Geschmeidigkeit der Afrikaner" sinniert? Warum finden wir die Existenz von Ausländerregelungen in der Bundesliga so selbstverständlich? Und weshalb ist die Vorstellung so abwegig, dass Frauen und Männer gemeinsam Fußball spielen? In jedem anderen Funktionssystem wären derartige partikularistische Diskriminierungen hochgradig legitimationspflichtig. Nur im Fußball bzw. im Sport werden nationale, ethnische sowie geschlechtliche Zuschreibungen unhinterfragt akzeptiert. Wieso aber gelten Ausländerbeschränkungen und Geschlechtersegregation nicht als Widerspruch zum sportlichen Leistungsprinzip und dem Inklusionspostulat funktional differenzierter Gesellschaften? Diese Fragen werden in der vorliegenden Arbeit anhand einer historischen Analyse des Fußballsports und ethnografischer Untersuchungen in drei Bundesligaklubs beantwortet.

    Abstract: Taylor focuses on the value that gun owners place on their guns and the possibility that different guns mean different things to their owners. His research explores the symbolic meaning of guns, and the ways in which the meaning assigned to guns influences gun ownership and use. Some of the more interesting findings center around conversations with gun collectors and enthusiasts about a series of interaction rituals; rituals pertaining to being a gun owner, a gun user, and possibly even the gun as an object of near-worship. Gun owners also recognize a unique stigma, and respond through a complex series of stigma management techniques.

    Abstract: Growing up in the Maragoli community in Kenya, Kenda Mutongi encountered a perplexing contradiction. While the young teachers at her village school railed against colonialism, many of her elders, including her widowed mother, praised their former British masters. In this moving book, Mutongi explores how both the challenges and contradictions of colonial rule and the frustrations and failures of independence shaped the lives of Maragoli widows and their complex relations with each other, their families, and the larger community.             Throughout the twentieth century and into the twenty-first, rates of widowhood have been remarkably high in Kenya. Yet despite their numbers, widows and their families exist at the margins of society, and their lives act as a barometer for the harsh realities of rural Kenya. Mutongi here argues that widows survive by publicly airing their social, economic, and political problems, their "worries of the heart." Initially aimed at the men in their community, and then their colonial rulers, this strategy changed after independence as widows increasingly invoked the language of citizenship to demand their rights from the new leaders of Kenya-leaders whose failure to meet the needs of ordinary citizens has led to deep disenchantment and altered Kenyans' view of their colonial past. An innovative blend of ethnography and historical research, Worries of the Heart is a poignant narrative rich with insights into postcolonial Africa.

    Abstract: Are postcolonies haunted more by criminal violence than other nation-states? The usual answer is yes. In Law and Disorder in the Postcolony, Jean and John Comaroff and a group of respected theorists show that the question is misplaced: that the predicament of postcolonies arises from their place in a world order dominated by new modes of governance, new sorts of empires, new species of wealth-an order that criminalizes poverty and race, entraps the "south" in relations of corruption, and displaces politics into the realms of the market, criminal economies, and the courts.  As these essays make plain, however, there is another side to postcoloniality: while postcolonies live in states of endemic disorder, many of them fetishize the law, its ways and itsmeans. How is the coincidence of disorder with a fixation on legalities to be explained? Law and Disorder in the Postcolony addresses this question, entering into critical dialogue with such theorists as Benjamin, Agamben, and Bayart. In the process, it also demonstrates how postcolonies have become crucial sites for the production of contemporary theory, not least because they are harbingers of a global future under construction.

In Deutschland hatte Renate Künast einen wesentlichen Anteil an dieser Politisierung. Sie hat das Thema unter Stichworten wie Chancengleichheit und Kostenentwicklung im Gesundheitswesen zum Gegenstand koordinierten staatlichen Handelns und auch moralischer Appelle gemacht. Sollte das unter normativen Gesichtspunkten aber so sein? Wird so nicht eine genuine Privatangelegenheit, unsere Ernährungsgewohnheiten, ins Licht der Öffentlichkeit gezerrt und damit vielleicht sogar zur Stigmatisierung übergewichtiger Menschen beigetragen? Wenn unsere Ernährungsweise begründet als Teil des Privaten verstanden werden kann, was bedeutet das wiederum für die Politik? Welche Maßnahmen erscheinen dann eher problematisch und welche geboten? Mit diesen Fragen befasst sich Felissa Mühlich.

    Abstract: Jürgen Habermas vertritt die These, dass sich das Konsensprinzip des kommunikativen Handelns in den Meinungs- und Willensbildungsprozess der Politik übertragen lasse. In der vorliegenden grundlegenden Kritik zeigt die Autorin, dass diese These nicht haltbar ist. Anders als Habermas annimmt, findet kommunikatives Handeln keinen Eingang in die Prozeduralität der Politik. Das politische Handeln wird vielmehr durch systemische Vorgaben bestimmt. Diese ergeben sich im Wesentlichen aus der Prozeduralität des ökonomischen Systems sowie aus der über Macht bestimmten Prozeduralität des politischen Systems selbst.

    Abstract: Im Unterschied zu Menschen der asiatischen Schwellenländer betrachten Politiker, Universitätslehrer und Geschäftsleute aus afrikanischen Ländern die Globalisierung eher mit Furcht: Können hochgradig hilfeabhängig gewordene Volkswirtschaften hoffen, nicht nur die Risiken der Globalisierung erleiden zu müssen, sondern auch von ihren Chancen profitieren zu können? Das Buch versucht, auf diese Schicksalsfrage Afrikas eine differenzierte Antwort zu geben. Es wird aufgezeigt, dass Afrika zwar weitgehend als bisheriger Verlierer der Globalisierung bezeichnet werden muss, dass jedoch vielerlei Formen der Anpassung und aktiven Bewältigung der globalen Herausforderungen entwickelt wurden. Die Globalisierung erscheint zwar als "Falle" : sie ist von Afrikanern nicht ersehnt worden, aber auch aus Fallen gibt es Auswege, und Modernisierung wird keineswegs abgelehnt. Afrika gibt es nur im Plural, und der weit verbreitete Afropessimismus tut den Afrikanerinnen und Afrikanern Unrecht, die unter schwierigsten materiellen Bedingungen für Demokratie und Menschenrechte und gegen Korruption und Selbstzerstörung eintreten.

    Abstract: Environment and Society explores ways to promote the behavioural shifts necessary for creating a 'sustainable society'. This tragic event opens the essay by psychoanalyst Susanne Chassay who explores the relationship between private and political terrorism. Her viewpoint complements analyses of violence - that 'mercurial gestalt' - by other contributors to this collection derived from a 2003 Cultures of Violence conference held at St. Catherine's College, Oxford, organized by the Inter-disciplinary Net. From fields as diverse as philosophy, sociology, psychology, history, political science, literary criticism, and forensics, authors consider, for instance, hostility to European minorities; military training and torture; the 'endemic violence' aesthetically recorded by Haitian novelists; child abuse in film; female genital mutilation in fiction; or the massacre of Koreans during the 1923 Japanese earthquake. Violence in contact zones in Northern Ireland or in the memory of South African museum directors trying to comply with Truth and Reconciliation Commission mandates is also an object of scrutiny here. Finally, that vexed, primordial issue of violence - nature or nurture? - is probed.

    Abstract: Gendering the State is a ground-breaking collection of studies that examines the efforts of women in countries all over the world to frame public policy debates on nationally critical issues in gendered terms. The overall study is grouped into three distinct patterns of state change: state downsizing-particularly in social policy areas (Canada, Finland, the Netherlands, the United States, and Spain); expansion of state activities into previously less-regulated areas (Austria, France, Germany, and Sweden); and transformation-often constitutionally based-of representative structures (Australia, Belgium, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom). Examination of these patterns reveals the impact of the changes in state structures and national priorities on the effectiveness and ability of women's movement actors in achieving their goals.
