    Kurzfassung: 'Aloha' is at once the most significant and the most misunderstood word in the indigenous Hawaiian lexicon. For Kanaka Maoli people, the concept of 'aloha' is a representation and articulation of their identity, despite its misappropriation and commandeering by non-native audiences in the form of things like the 'hula girl' of popular culture. Considering the way aloha is embodied, performed, and interpreted in native Hawaiian literature, music, plays, dance, drag performance, and even ghost tours from the twentieth century to the present, Stephanie Nohelani Teves shows that misunderstanding of the concept by non-native audiences has not prevented the Kanaka Maoli from using it to create and empower community and articulate its distinct Indigenous meaning.

    Kurzfassung: Since 2004, the Baby Doll Mardi Gras tradition in New Orleans has gone from an obscure, almost-forgotten practice to a flourishing cultural force. The original Baby Dolls were groups of black women, & some men, in the early Jim Crow era who adopted New Orleans street-masking tradition as a unique form of fun & self-expression against a backdrop of racial discrimination. Wearing short dresses, bloomers, bonnets, & garters with money tucked tight, they strutted, sang ribald songs, chanted, & danced on Mardi Gras Day & on St. Joseph feast night. Today's Baby Dolls continue the tradition of one of the first street women's masking & marching groups in the United States. They joyfully & unabashedly defy gender roles, claiming public space & proclaiming through their performance their right to social citizenship.

    Kurzfassung: In 2007, while researching mountain culture in upstate South Carolina, anthropologist John M. Coggeshall stumbled upon the small community of Liberia in the Blue Ridge foothills. There he met Mable Owens Clarke and her family, the remaining members of a small African American community still living on land obtained immediately after the Civil War. This intimate history tells the story of five generations of the Owens family and their friends and neighbors, chronicling their struggles through slavery, Reconstruction, the Jim Crow era, and the desegregation of the state. Through hours of interviews with Mable and her relatives, as well as friends and neighboyrs, Coggeshall presents an ethnographic history that allows members of a largely ignored community to speak and record their own history for the first time.

    Kurzfassung: Considering yodeling as a musical device in American music, this text investigates in parallel two ways of understanding various meanings associated with yodeling: as the connotative functions of yodeling within specific musical texts and as the ideological implications of its use. It aims to provoke a reflection on the concept of singing and received cultural ideas associated with it. Starting with the premise that music is a discursive practice that is itself inseparable from a critical verbal discourse about music, the work interrogates the relationship between yodeling and predominating musical orthodoxy. Through a critical examination of that relationship, the book explores numerous examples of yodeling in American music, questioning why it achieved prominence and status in some genres and not in others and attempting to account for the relatively low prestige accorded to music featuring yodeling.

    Kurzfassung: Images have never been as freely circulated as they are today. They have also never been so tightly controlled. As with the birth of photography, digital reproduction has created new possibilities for the duplication and consumption of images, offering greater dissemination and access. But digital reproduction has also stoked new anxieties concerning authenticity and ownership. From this contemporary vantage point, 'After Uniqueness' traces the ambivalence of reproducibility through the intersecting histories of experimental cinema and the moving image in art, examining how artists, filmmakers, and theorists have found in the copy a utopian promise or a dangerous inauthenticity - or both at once.

    Kurzfassung: In einer Stadt wie Frankfurt am Main muss man nicht mehr verreisen, um ein fernes Land zu erkunden. Brasilien findet man hinter vielen Türen, denn die verlassene Heimat wird von Migrant_innen unterschiedlich aufbewahrt und täglich in verschiedenen Medien aktualisiert: in Büchern, Tänzen, Musik und Bildern, aber auch in Gerüchen und Kulinarischem. Könnte man also ein fernes Land in seiner Vielfalt und Prozesshaftigkeit verstehen, wenn man es in der »Migration« bereist? Amalia Barboza sucht nach einem relationalen und performativen Ansatz, um die Wege zu verfolgen, die sich in der Migration und in der Forschung kreuzen. Dabei wird ersichtlich, dass eine Nation ein lebendiges Konstrukt ist, welches immer wieder neu aus verschiedenen Perspektiven imaginiert und konstruiert wird

    Kurzfassung: Gefühle beeinflussen unser Verhalten überall - auch in der Wissenschaft. Aber bei Forscher_innen sind Affekte suspekt: Sie werden als Störungen betrachtet, die eine objektive Arbeit gefährden. Dabei beeinflussen sie zwangsläufig den Forschungsprozess, weshalb ihre kritische Analyse ein fester Bestandteil wissenschaftlicher Tätigkeit sein sollte. Insbesondere die Feldforschung löst regelmäßig emotionale Reaktionen (etwa zu Kriegsgräuel, Diskriminierungen von Bevölkerungsgruppen oder sozialen Unterschieden) aus, welche die Beobachtung bedingen, das Verständnis beeinflussen und die Theoriebildung lenken. In den Beiträgen des Bandes werden fächerübergreifend eine Reihe textanalytischer und empirischer Methoden vorgeschlagen, mit deren Hilfe Emotionalität in der Forschung transparent gemacht werden kann

    Kurzfassung: Die männliche Taille ist ein in der Forschung bisher ausgesparter »Gegenstand«, dessen vor allem modegeschichtliche Entwicklung jedoch wesentliches Potenzial aufweist. Im Zentrum von Julia Burdes Buch steht daher der sich mit der Modewandelnde männliche Modekörper als Diskurs der Schneiderei im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert. Sie zeigt, wie sich die Männermode von einem erst sichelförmig durchgebogenen, dann schmal taillierten Körper - modelliert aus Watte und Stoff - zu einem modernen Körper in gerade geschnittener Kleidung entwickelte, von dessen Anatomie sich das Schnittmuster losgelöst hat.     Kurzfassung: In the early years of the Cold War, Western nations increasingly adopted strategies of public diplomacy involving popular music. While the diplomatic use of popular music was initially limited to such genres as jazz, the second half of the 20th century saw a growing presence of various popular genres in diplomatic contexts, including rock, punk, reggae, and hip-hop.This volume illuminates the interrelation of popular music and public diplomacy from a transnational and transdisciplinary angle. The contributions argue that, as popular music has been a crucial factor in international relations, its diplomatic use has substantially impacted the global musical landscape of the 20th and 21st centuries

    Kurzfassung: Auch nach 70 Jahren der Vertreibung aus ihrer Heimat hat sich die Lage der palästinensischen Flüchtlinge im libanesischen Exil nicht verbessert. Viele leben immer noch in Flüchtlingslagern und sind somit räumlich wie gesellschaftlich nicht in die Majoritätsgesellschaft eingegliedert. Wulf Frauens Studie über die Identitätsbildungsprozesse dieser Flüchtlinge spiegelt das ganze Elend einer nicht zur Ruhe kommenden Region wider. Während bisherige Publikationen zumeist das Bild eines in der Vergangenheit fußenden, weitestgehend uniformen Identitätsentwurfes zeichnen, wird hier ein differenzierterer Erklärungsvorschlag unterbreitet: Über das Nachvollziehen generationeller Bruchlinien wird nicht nur deutlich, welche bunte Vielfalt Identitäten eines Kollektives in der Diaspora haben können, sondern auch, warum es auch für uns wichtig ist, diese zu verstehen

    Kurzfassung: 〈p〉Tiere und Menschen teilen sich seit jeher ihre Lebensräume. Deutlich zeigt sich dies im Wohnen, wo Tier-Mensch-Beziehungen nicht nur die Gestaltung der Räume, sondern auch die Wohnpraxis wesentlich mitbestimmen. So können Menschen dem lebenden Tier ein Heim geben, umgekehrt kann aber auch das tote Tier als präparierter Tierkörper oder als textile Wohn- und Oberflächengestaltung Teil des Interieurs werden. Die Beiträge des Bandes untersuchen mögliche Arten der Einbindung des Tierlichen in Haus und Wohnung und verknüpfen hierzu Ansätze aus dem Bereich der kunst- und kulturgeschichtlichen Wohnforschung mit zentralen Positionen der Human-Animal Studies. Im Fokus stehen unterschiedliche Medialisierungen〈br /〉der Verhäuslichung tierlichen Verhaltens sowie deren Bedeutung für das Zusammenleben von Tier und Mensch. Auf diese Weise wird das behauste Wohnen als vermeintlich genuin menschliche Kulturpraxis hinterfragt und neu perspektiviert.〈/p〉

    Kurzfassung: Kollaboratives Arbeiten ist der Modus der Stunde. Kaum ein Projekt, das seine Bedeutung nicht auch über den Stellenwert des Zusammenarbeitens formuliert. Unsichtbar bleiben jedoch oftmals die (versteckten) Strukturen und Bedingungen, unter denen sich kollaborative Prozesse konstituieren und durchgeführt werden. Dies betrifft verinnerlichte Regelsysteme ebenso wie symbolische Ordnungen, Wissenshierarchien und Objektivationen, die innerhalb von Kollaborationen (implizit oder explizit) ausgehandelt werden.Der Band versammelt Perspektiven aus der Empirischen Kulturwissenschaft und benachbarten Disziplinen, die sich mit gegenwärtigen kollaborativen Prozessen befassen. Im Zentrum steht dabei die Reflexion eigener Arbeitsformen und Erfahrungen.

    Kurzfassung: The story of the pervasive and resilient Russian bathhouse (banya) offers new perspectives on the evolution of Russian identity, conceptions of health and hygiene, and forms of community, sexuality, and sociability. The meanings that have formed around the banya over its thousand-year history make it a unique prism through which to understand the effects of broad social, economic, and political changes on the everyday lives of Russians and to understand how Russians have seemed at times barbaric and at times enlightened to outsiders. Sources ranging from the earliest recorded Russian chronicles to recent feature films, from municipal codes to highbrow Russian literature, illustrate the ways in which the banya, whether in Russia, in the Russian diaspora, or in the imagination of outsiders, has been a place to get clean and a space for intrigue, intimacy, violence, and sex.

    Kurzfassung: This title explores Jewish refugee movements before, during and after the Holocaust and to place them in a longer history of forced migration from the 1880s to the present. It does not deny that there were particular issues facing the Jews escaping from Nazism, but in this enlightening study the author emphasises that there are longer term trends which shed light on responses to and the experiences of these refugees and other forced migrants. Focusing on women, children, and 'illegal' boat migrants, the author considers not only British spheres of influence, but also Europe, the Middle East, the Americas, South Asia, Australasia. The approach adopted is historical but incorporates insights from many different disciplines including geography, anthropology, cultural and literary studies and politics.

    Kurzfassung: 'Deaf in the USSR' explores the history of the deaf community in the Soviet Union from the February Revolution of 1917 until the collapse of the Soviet state in 1991, situating the experience of deaf people within the broader framework of Soviet programs of identity. Using sources from the All-Russian Society of the Deaf (VOG), a deaf-run state body that can trace its history back to the revolutions of 1917, alongside institutional archives, deaf journalism, literature, theatre, art, cinema and personal memoirs, it considers deaf engagement with the Soviet project to remake society in its various incarnations throughout the Soviet era, and reveals the shifting ways in which the hearing world perceived Soviet deaf lives.

    Kurzfassung: Given the vast inventory of verbal and visual images of nonhuman animals disseminated for millennia to debase and bestialize Jews (the Bestiarium Judaicum), this work asks: What is at play when Jewish-identified writers employ such figures in their narratives and poems? Bringing together Jewish cultural studies, examining how Jews have negotiated Jew-Gentile difference, and critical animal studies, analyzing the functions served by asserting human-animal difference, this monograph focuses on the writings of primarily Germanophone authors, including Sigmund Freud, Heinrich Heine, Franz Kafka, Gertrud Kolmar, H. Leivick, Felix Salten, and Curt Siodmak. It ferrets out of their nonhuman-animal constructions their responses to the bestial answers upon which the Jewish and animal questions converged and by which varieties of the species 'Jew' were depicted.

    Kurzfassung: Das Schöne wird seit den Anfängen denkmaltheoretischer Überlegungen als wertstiftende Kategorie explizit ausgeklammert. Gleichzeitig wird es ständig verhandelt, sei es implizit im theoretischen Kontext oder explizit in der Auseinandersetzung um das »schöne« Denkmal in der Praxis.Ausgehend von dieser Diskrepanz untersucht Stephanie Herold die Rolle des Schönen in der Denkmalpflege von deren Anfängen im 19. Jahrhundert bis in die heutige Zeit. Dabei geht sie nicht nur möglichen historischen Gründen für das ambivalente Verhältnis der Denkmalpflege zum Schönen nach, sondern fragt zudem, ob ein anderer Umgang mit dem Thema möglich ist, um neue Potenziale zu erschließen

    Kurzfassung: Warum gehen manche Geschehnisse in die Geschichte einer Nation ein? Warum werden andere vergessen oder gar unterdrückt? Und wie und warum kommen diese wieder zum Vorschein?Susanne C. Knittel analysiert verdrängte Aspekte des Zweiten Weltkrieges und des Holocausts in den Erinnerungskulturen Deutschlands und Italiens nach 1945. Diese tauchen beharrlich auf und stören den dominanten Erinnerungsdiskurs, dessen Gedenkrituale und etablierte Vorstellungen: die NS-»Euthanasie« einerseits und die Verbrechen des italienischen Faschismus sowie die Kollaboration mit den deutschen Besatzern andererseits. Durch eine vergleichende Betrachtung von Gedenkstätten sowie künstlerischen und literarischen Darstellungen, die diesen Verbrechen und ihren Opfern gewidmet sind, entsteht ein zwiespältiges Porträt der Holocausterinnerung in Europa

An den alltäglichen Begegnungen polnischer Putzfrauen und ihren deutschen Arbeitgeberinnen ist abzulesen, wie sich das polnisch-deutsche Verhältnis im persönlichen Umgang neu konstituiert. As a key provider of the narrative frames and formulas needed by modern individuals to give meaning and mooring to their lives. Drawing on phenomenological hermeneutics, human geography and social psychology, Laura Bieger contends that belonging is not a given; it is continuously produced by narrative. Against the current emphasis on metaphors of movement and destabilization, she explores the salience and significance of home. Challenging views of narrative as a mechanism of ideology, she approaches narrative as a practical component of dwelling in the world - and the novel a primary place-making agent

    Kurzfassung: Die ethnische Minderheit der Kärntner Slowen_innen behauptete sich trotz anhaltender Diskriminierung, Stigmatisierung und Sprachverlust - die Auswirkungen dieser Situation auf das alltägliche soziale Miteinander sind bisher jedoch noch nicht untersucht. Mit einem praxistheoretischen Ansatz begibt sich Jonas Kolb daher auf die empirische Suche und schildert lebensnah Sozialisationsprozesse junger Slowenischsprachiger in Familie, Schule und Freizeit. Seine Studie zeigt: Der Schlüssel zum Verständnis der ethnischen Minderheit liegt im drohenden Verschwinden ihrer Sprache. Mittels vielfältiger performativer Strategien wirken Heranwachsende aktiv dieser Bedrohung entgegen und setzen sich für den Erhalt ihrer Sprache ein

    Kurzfassung: A fresh look at synesthesia discourse in the sciences and humanities since the 19th century - while at the same time an interdisciplinary and original cultural history of the modern!
    Kurzfassung: Ist von Synästhesie die Rede, so verbinden sich damit gemeinhin Vorstellungen einer »ursprünglichen« Einheit der Sinne. Melanie Gruß dagegen formuliert Synästhesie als Diskurs, der sich im 19. Jahrhundert als Reaktion auf die Entwicklung technischer Medien konstituiert und diese Deutung zuerst hervorbringt. Sie zeigt: Als Konstrukt verknüpft das Synästhetische Utopien gesamtsinnlichen Empfindens mit Visionen der technischen Synthetisierung und Kopplung der Sinne. Die Studie bietet nicht nur einen innovativen Blick auf eine seit etwa 1980 verstärkt geführte Debatte um Synästhesie in Natur- und Geisteswissenschaften, sondern vor allem einen interdisziplinär angelegten Zugriff auf die Kulturgeschichte seit der Moderne.

    Kurzfassung: Everyday articulations of music, place, urban politics, and inclusion/exclusion are powerfully present in Istanbul. This volume analyzes landscapes of music, community, and exclusion across a century and a half. An interdisciplinary group of scholars and artists presents four case studies: the rembetika, the music of the Asiks, the Zakir/Alevi tradition, and hip-hop, in Beyoglu, Üsküdar, the gentrifying Sulukule neighborhood, and across the metropolis. Alex Papadopoulos is Associate Professor of Geography at DePaul University, Chicago. He studies the contestation of urban space in European cities. Asli Duru is Marie Curie Fellow at The Open University, London, and studies everyday geographies of health and wellbeing.
