    Abstract: Burma's Pop Music Industry is the first book to explore the contemporary pop music industry in a country that is little known or understood in the West. Based on years of fieldwork in Burma/Myanmar, Heather MacLachlan's work explores the ways in which aspiring musical artists are forging a place within the highly repressive social and political context that is Burma today. It deals sensitively with issues such as negotiating local and global styles,performance contexts and practices, and, more importantly, with ethical issues such as the anonymity of informants and the place of Western ethnomusicologists in countries outside the West. Drawn from interviews conducted from 2007 through 2009 with Burmese composers, performers, producers, concert promoters, journalists, recording engineers, radio station employees, music teachers, and censors in Yangon -- Burma's largest city and the locus of all pop music production -- Burma's Pop Music Industry represents a significant contribution both to popular music studies and to Southeast Asian studies

    Abstract: After Hollywood and Tin Pan Alley's iron grip on the movie musical began to slip in the face of pop's cultural dominance, many believed that the musical genre entered a terminal decline and finally wore itself out by the 1980s. Though the industrial model of the musical was disrupted by the emergence of pop, the Hollywood musical has not gone extinct. Many Hollywood productions from the 1960s to the present have revisited the forms and conventions of the classic musical-except instead of drawing from showtunes and jazz standards, they employ the styles and iconography of pop.Alberto Mira offers a new account of how pop music revolutionized the Hollywood musical. He shows that while the Hollywood system ceased producing large-scale traditional musicals, different pop strains-disco, rock 'n' roll, doo-wop, glam, and hip-hop-renewed the genre, giving it a new life. While the classical musical presented a world light on conflict, defined by theatricality and where effortless talent can shine through, the introduction of pop spurred musicals to address contemporary social and political conditions. Mira traces the emergence of a new set of themes-such as the painful hard work depicted in Dirty Dancing (1987); the double-edged fandom of Velvet Goldmine (1998); and the racial politics of Dreamgirls (2006)-to explore why the Hollywood musical has found renewed relevance.

Durch die Rekonstruktion individueller Lebensgeschichten heroinabhängiger Musiker*innen in Los Angeles bestimmt Melanie Ptatscheck nicht nur sozialpsychologische und musikspezifische Suchtfaktoren. Ebenso zeigt sie auf, durch welche individuellen Bedürfnisse und gesellschaftlichen Narrative die Selbstvorstellungen dieser Musiker*innen geprägt sind

    Abstract: In Sound Alignments, a transnational group of scholars explores the myriad forms of popular music that circulated across Asia during the Cold War. Challenging the conventional alignments and periodizations of Western cultural histories of the Cold War, they trace the routes of popular music, examining how it took on new meanings and significance as it traveled across Asia, from India to Indonesia, Hong Kong to South Korea, China to Japan. From studies of how popular musical styles from the Americas and Europe were adapted to meet local exigencies to how socialist-bloc and nonaligned Cold War organizations facilitated the circulation of popular music throughout the region, the contributors outline how music forged and challenged alliances, revolutions, and countercultures. They also show how the Cold War's legacy shapes contemporary culture, particularly in the ways 1990s and 2000s J-pop and K-pop are rooted in American attempts to foster economic exchange in East Asia in the 1960s.Throughout, Sound Alignments demonstrates that the experiences of the Cold War in Asia were as diverse and dynamic as the music heard and performed in it.Contributors.     Abstract: Chuck Berrys Roll Over Beethoven, A Clockwork Orange, die Peanuts – das sind wohl die ersten Phänomene, die in den Sinn kommen, hört man die Stichworte Beethoven und Pop. Allerdings sind das bloß die populärsten Knotenpunkte schier endloser Referenzketten, die sich ausgehend von Ludwig van Beethovens Lebzeiten bis in die Gegenwart hineinziehen. Sie finden sich unter anderem in Hollywood und auf Punk-Platten, bei Jazz-Konzerten und auf Werbeplakaten. Diese Auseinandersetzungen mit Beethoven und seiner Musik im Pop sind bislang nahezu unerforscht. Für die Ausstellung Ludwig lebt! im rock’n’popmuseum Gronau hat dieser Katalog daher die Herausforderung angenommen, zum Jubiläumsjahr 2020 einen ersten Überblick zu geben und mit einer starken Thesenbildung das Forschungsfeld zu vermessen. Mit Beiträgen der Filmwissenschaft, Kunstgeschichte, Literaturwissenschaft und Musikwissenschaft von Moritz Baßler, Michael Custodis, Friedrich Geiger, Henry Keazor und Thorsten Wübbena, Thomas Mania, Peter Moormann und Stefan Lüschow sowie Anna Seidel ließen sich hierfür erstmals repräsentative, einprägsame, kontroverse, überraschende und unterhaltsame Ergebnisse zusammentragen. Ergänzt werden die Beiträge durch Interviews mit Judith Holofernes, Wolf Hoffmann, Bernd Schadewald und Steve Vai.

    Abstract: This interdisciplinary study historicizes house music, the rhythmically focused electronic dance sound born in the post-industrial maroon spaces of Chicago’s queer, black, and Latino social dancers. Working from oral history interviews, archival research, and performance ethnography, it argues that the remediation and adaptation of house by multiple and overlapping crossover communities in its first decade shaped the ways that contemporary Chicago house music producers, DJs, dancers, and promoters re-remember and re-animate house as an archive indexing experiences of queer of color congregation. Engaging with and extending the fields of African American studies, urban studies, gender and sexuality studies, dance studies, performance studies, popular music studies, ethnomusicology, and media studies, Do You Remember House? considers house music culture’s liberatory potential in relation to its flexible repertoire in motion, an ever-expanding archive of danceable sounds.

    Abstract: Remembering Popular Music's Past capitalizes on the growing interest, globally, in the preservation of popular music's material past and on scholarly explorations of the ways in which popular music, as heritage, is produced, legitimized and conferred cultural and historical significance.     Abstract: 〈p〉Anonymity practices in electronic music culture have long been the object of journalistic and academic discourse. Yet anonymity itself is ephemeral and ontologically precarious. How can scholars research anonymous entities without impairing their anonymity, and what can they learn from their precarity?〈br /〉This study describes two projects of anonymity performance as forms of critical practice (Judith Butler/Michel Foucault) involving performative play with anonymity through the use of fake identities or collaborative persona imaginations. Adopting a reflexive and performative writing style, this performance ethnography calls for a radical performative turn and an ontological reflexivity in the cultural studies of music.〈/p〉

    Abstract: DDR und Heavy Metal? Wolf-Georg Zaddach rückt eine in der Forschung lange Zeit vernachlässigte Jugendkultur in den Fokus und erläutert - erstmalig in diesem Umfang - die alltäglichen Praktiken und Entwicklungen der Heavy Metal-Szene im DDR-Sozialismus der 1980er-Jahre. Die empirische Grundlage hierfür bieten bisher unveröffentlichte Quellen wie Songtexte auf Karteikarten, Fan-Briefe und Akten der »Stasi« (Ministerium für Staatssicherheit). Es kommen aber auch zahlreiche Zeitzeugen wie die Macher der Kultradiosendung »Tendenz Hard bis Heavy« sowie diverse Fans und Musiker zu Wort.

The pervasive nature of stardom in modern society demands study from the perspectives of a range of distinct but thematically connected disciplines. The exploration of intersections between broader considerations of stardom and the discourses of popular music studies is the genesis for this volume. The chapters collected here demonstrate the variety of work currently being undertaken in stardom studies by scholars in Australia. The contributions range from biographical considerations of the stars of popular music, contributions to critical discourses of stardom in the industry more broadly, and the various ways in which the use of astronomical metaphors, in both cultural commentary and academic discourse, demonstrate notions of stardom firmly embedded in popular music thought.     Abstract: In electronic music culture, anonymity practices have long been established as a method of critique of pop star cult and identification regimes. How can scholars research an anti-representational music culture and what can they learn from it? Recently, electronic pop music has resorted to a performative play with identity involving fake or parafictive identities or collaborative persona imaginations.This study sketches two musico-artistic projects of anonymity performance as forms of immanent and particulate `critical practice' in the sense of Judith Butler and Michel Foucault. Adopting performance in a reflexive and performative writing style, this `performance ethnography' calls for a radical performative turn in the cultural studies of music.

    Abstract: Plague, a devastating and recurring affliction throughout the Renaissance, had a major impact on European life. Not only was pestilence a biological problem, but it was also read as a symptom of spiritual degeneracy and it caused widespread social disorder. Mittels der Analyse von Konzerten, Liedtexten, CD-Covern und Interviews mit bekannten Musikern im Bereich des Pagan Metal diskutiert Serina Heinen das Verhältnis von Religion und Populärkultur.Dabei tritt ein wichtiger Aspekt von moderner Religion zutage, der in religionssoziologischen Debatten kaum Beachtung findet: Religion im populärkulturellen Kontext ist vieldeutig. Pagan Metal ist voller explizit religionsbezogener Symbolik, doch verstehen die Musiker ihre künstlerische Auseinandersetzung mit Religion nicht zwingend als religiöses Bekenntnis.
    Abstract: Religion is found not only in churches and mosques, but also in profane environments - even at heavy metal concerts. Through an analysis of concerts, lyrics, CD covers and interviews with famous musicians in the 'pagan metal' scene, Serina Heinen discusses the relationship between religion and popular culture. In the process, an important aspect of religion is brought to light that in the socio-religious debate on secularization and the return of religion is given hardly any attention: in a contemporary society strongly shaped by popular culture, religion does not necessarily have a religious connotation. The religious references in pagan metal are primarily used for stylistic purposes - and not as religious proclamations.

    Abstract: "This book explores the role of music in the transmission of political culture over time and distance, focusing on radicals and reformers committed to the struggle for a better future. It follows in the footsteps of relentlessly travelling activists - both women and men - and brings to light the importance of music-making in the lived experience of politics. It shows how music encouraged, unified, divided, consoled and reminded; and it helps to understand better the affective register of the political and cultural life of those who composed, performed and consumed it. Throughout the long nineteenth century the sounds of liberty resonated across the Anglophone world: in the faint strains of 'rough music' played on the streets of Toronto and the 'middle-brow' performances within the walls of a secularist coven in Christchurch; in cacophonous election songs swirling around the hustings in Glasgow and Sunday afternoon chamber music concerts in the heart of radical Holborn; in defiant anthems blaring slightly out of tune on picket lines in Broken Hill and in hymns warbled by labour church choirs in Winnipeg. The first section examines songs; the second examines music's place in the public sphere where people - individually and collectively - made music when marching, electioneering, celebrating and commemorating, as well as striking, rioting and rebelling. The final section explores music-making within the walls of a range of associations and institutions including the difficult and often destructive part it played in European interaction with indigenous people" --Back cover

    Abstract: Forschung auf dem Gebiet »Hip-Hop und Religion« hat sich bisher meist auf religiöse Lesarten von Raptexten konzentriert und zudem Musikvideos bei dieser Betrachtung weitestgehend außer Acht gelassen. Eileen Simonow geht der These nach, dass religiöses Material in den Clips sakral und damit entgrenzend, in Bedeutungen überschießend - und damit im eigentlichen Sinne anti-religiös inszeniert - ist. Dafür werden Musikvideos des US-amerikanischen Mainstreams in ihrer komplexen Verschränkung der auditiven und visuellen Ebenen mit der Sakraltheorie Georges Batailles gelesen. In vier Analysen von Musikvideos - u.a. von Kanye West - wird das Sakrale als aus dem Sozialen hervorgehende Kraft im Spannungsfeld von Macht, Ideologie und Widerstand diskutiert

Mittels der Analyse von Konzerten, Liedtexten, CD-Covern und Interviews mit bekannten Musikern im Bereich des Pagan Metal diskutiert Serina Heinen das Verhältnis von Religion und Populärkultur.Dabei tritt ein wichtiger Aspekt von moderner Religion zutage, der in religionssoziologischen Debatten kaum Beachtung findet: Religion im populärkulturellen Kontext ist vieldeutig. Pagan Metal ist voller explizit religionsbezogener Symbolik, doch verstehen die Musiker ihre künstlerische Auseinandersetzung mit Religion nicht zwingend als religiöses Bekenntnis
    Abstract: Religion is found not only in churches and mosques, but also in profane environments - even at heavy metal concerts. Through an analysis of concerts, lyrics, CD covers and interviews with famous musicians in the 'pagan metal' scene, Serina Heinen discusses the relationship between religion and popular culture. In the process, an important aspect of religion is brought to light that in the socio-religious debate on secularization and the return of religion is given hardly any attention: in a contemporary society strongly shaped by popular culture, religion does not necessarily have a religious connotation. The religious references in pagan metal are primarily used for stylistic purposes - and not as religious proclamations
