    Abstract: This handbook provides a comprehensive account of the languages spoken in Ethiopia, exploring their structures and their function and use in society. It offers overviews of individual languages, many of them less documented, as well as detailed studies of specific aspects of language use in Ethiopia.
    Abstract: "Ethiopia - a country in the Horn of Africa - hosts about 100 million people speaking more than eighty languages belonging to the Cushitic, Omotic, Nilo-Saharan, and Semitic languages families (CSA 2013: 28; Meyer & Richter 2003: 23-29; Eberhard, Simons & Fennig 2019). Speakers of these languages have been in contact for a long time resulting in widespread bi- and multilingualism and in the creation of regional and national lingua francas. Eventually, this situation yielded the Ethiopian Linguistic Area whose features are still open for ongoing discussion (see Crass & Meyer 2008). In 1991, the Ethiopian government established a policy promoting the use of all Ethiopian languages in primary education and local administration. Since then, research on Ethiopian languages has experienced an unprecedented expansion and has become a major field of study for the new generation of Ethiopian linguists (see Bulakh et al. 2019: 98-106). Despite the remarkable amount of research on individual Ethiopian languages, language groups and sociolinguistic topics over the last few decades, the most frequently cited general reference works on Ethiopian languages and linguistics still remain Bender et al. (1976a) and Bender (1976a), which obviously no longer represent the state of the art. These two works have remained easily available in Ethiopia and beyond over the last forty years, and are written in a very accessible descriptive-linguistic style so they are also frequently used by students of Ethiopian linguistics. Moreover, they combine information on sociolinguistic, historical linguistic, and applied linguistic issues with basic linguistic descriptions of Ethiopian languages. More recent handbooks, such as Kaye (1997; 2007), Hetzron (1997) or its second edition by Huehnergard & Pat-El (2019), and Weninger (2011a), focus only on Semitic languages, and thus lack information on the other language families found in Ethiopia. The Encyclopedia Aethiopica (Uhlig & Bausi 2003-2014) - the most up-to-date general reference work on Ethiopia - also contains information on Ethiopian languages but usually only in the form of very brief, fairly standardized entries that provide basic information on the phonology, morphology and syntax. Handbooks on African languages like Heine et al. (1981), Heine & Nurse (2000; 2008), Güldemann (2018), and Wolff (2019) also deal with various Ethiopian languages but do not provide a comprehensive description of them and their subgroups. Edzard (2012) and Frajzyngier & Shay (2012) deal with genetic and typological aspects of Afroasiatic and its major groups; Edzard (2012) also contains short grammatical descriptions of a very few languages. However, the language descriptions are very selective, and information on sociolinguistic issues is inadequate"--

    Abstract: This comparative and multi-level study of state responses is confronted with huge complexity. Almost all existing theoretical and methodological approaches -such as secularism (including multiple secularisms or post-secularism)- do not take these complexities seriously into account, focusing on one concept only (wrong Leitdifferenz). They neglect different meanings of terms for agents in the field and they neglect the importance of different levels of governance, times, issues and minorities. This study, however, highlights minimally necessary complexity without drowning in this complexity. It draws clear conceptual, theoretical and methodological lessons, also in a broader sense for the study of governance of religious and cultural diversity and for the governance of migrations.     Abstract: Immer mehr Menschen in der Schweiz praktizieren Yoga, glauben an eine Wiedergeburt und lassen sich komplementärmedizinisch behandeln. Barbara Zeugin untersucht, wie sich dieser religiöse Wandel auf die Begleitung am Lebensende auswirkt Insofern alternative Formen von Religion in der Schweiz zunehmen, ist es nicht erstaunlich, wenn in der Begleitung am Lebensende auch alternativ-religiöse Praktiken und alternative Heilverfahren sowie die entsprechenden Rationalisierungen immer mehr an Bedeutung gewinnen. Die Rekonstruktion einer solchen, als alternativ aufgefassten Sterbebegleitungspraxis führte die Religionswissenschaftlerin erstens in ein Hospiz für schwer Kranke und Sterbende und zweitens in ein anthroposophisch-medizinisches Spital, wo sie beobachtend und fragend den folgenden Fragen nachging: Welche alternativ-religiösen Handlungsformen und Rationalisierungen spielen in der Begleitung am Lebensende eine Rolle? Welche Bedeutung wird alternativen Heilpraktiken zugeschrieben? Wie sieht die konkrete Begleitungspraxis aus? Und worin besteht letztlich die Alternativität dieser Praxis resp. wie verhält sich diese zum Selbstanspruch der Palliative Care, die schwer Kranken und Sterbenden auch spirituell zu begleiten?

The final part offers fifteen case studies that include in-depth discussion of grammatical number phenomena in a range of typologically diverse languages, written by - or in collaboration with - native speakers linguists or based on extensive fieldwork.

In other words, games work in the medium of agency. This book explores what games have to teach us about our own rationality and agency.     Abstract: Es gibt Mythen des Entscheidens, die immer wieder erzählt werden, wie beispielsweise die Entscheidung von Adam und Eva im Paradies, vom Baum der Erkenntnis zu essen, das Urteil des Paris, Herakles am Scheideweg oder Buridans Esel, der sich zwischen zwei Heuhaufen nicht entscheiden kann und deshalb zugrunde geht. Der aus dem Münsteraner Sonderforschungsbereich 1150 »Kulturen des Entscheidens« hervorgegangene interdisziplinäre Tagungsband untersucht das Verhältnis von Mythos, Narration und Entscheiden. Er setzt in Mythos und Literatur erzählte Entscheidensszenarien in Bezug zu modernen Theorien des Entscheidens und fragt nach ihrer Funktion sowie den Veränderungen in unterschiedlichen historischen und kulturellen Kontexten. Analysiert werden einerseits Entscheidenssituationen, die in Mythen dargestellt werden; andererseits wird auch deutlich, in welcher Weise Mythen selbst Entscheidensdispositive darstellen.     Abstract: Über die Auswirkungen digitaler Kommunikation wird viel spekuliert: Dem Versprechen, dass Neue Medien uns dabei helfen, Beziehungen aufzubauen und zu pflegen, unser Leben einfacher und gehaltvoller zu gestalten und unsere Arbeit zielstrebig und effizient zu erledigen, misstrauen viele Menschen zu Recht. Ähnliche Skepsis verdienen die Befürchtungen, der digitale Medienwandel würde uns zu atemlosen, oberflächlichen Maschinenmenschen machen.Wir können die Veränderung, die wir momentan erleben, nur verstehen, wenn wir sie präzise beschreiben und beim Untersuchen ihrer Auswirkungen nicht von Ängsten, Vorurteilen und Extrembeispielen ausgehen, sondern uns von wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen leiten lassen.Wampfler zeigt, wie sich Menschen durch ihre Techniknutzung verändern, wie sich die Bedeutung ihrer Beziehungen durch eine digitale Ebene wandelt und wie Lernen mit Neuen Medien möglich ist. Dabei wird darauf verzichtet, das Virtuelle als eine der Realität gegenüberstehende Sphäre abzugrenzen, weil digitale Kommunikation in ihrer Virtualität gleichzeitig Teil der Realität ist und sich das Leben im Cyberspace und das Leben im direkt wahrnehmbaren Raum gegenseitig beeinflussen.Ein kritischer Blick auf die Generation der »Digital Natives« zeigt auf, dass in ihrer Beschreibung nicht getrennt wird zwischen dem Verhalten, das Jugendliche unabhängig von digitaler Technologie auszeichnet, und spezifisch medienbedingten Veränderungen. Ausgehend von einer sachlichen Beschreibung der Mediennutzung von Jugendlichen wird anschaulich, in welchem Rahmen die Kinder von heute sich entwickeln und morgen ein gehaltvolles, würdiges Leben führen können. So entsteht eine nüchterne Medienpädagogik jenseits von Polemik und übertriebenen Befürchtungen, auf deren Grundlage wirkungsvolle Prävention der gefährlichen Aspekte der Nutzung Neuer Medien denkbar wird. Konkretisiert werden diese Überlegungen mit ganz praktischen Tipps, wie Erwachsene Jugendliche in ihrer Mediennutzung begleiten können und sollen, um sicherzustellen, dass sie mit der Fülle von Material und ihrem Ablenkungspotential selbständig umgehen können.Abschließend entwickelt eine Verbindung von Erzählungen aus Science Fiction mit einer Analyse technischer Möglichkeiten eine Vorstellung davon, wie Menschen Maschinen in Zukunft selbstbestimmt nutzen können, um ihr Leben frei zu gestalten. Eine sachliche, wissenschaftlich fundierte Beschreibung der Veränderungen, die digitale Medien für die Jugendlichen von heute und von morgen bedeuten, ermöglicht zielführende (medien-)pädagogische Arbeit. Philippe Wampfler unterrichtet an der Kantonsschule Enge, ist als Dozent für Fachdidaktik Deutsch am IFE der Universität Zürich tätig und ist publizistisch in Blogs und Social Media Networks aktiv.

In mobilising a range of approaches and methodologies pertinent to their specialist fields of inquiry, contributors share in the common objective of elucidating the cultural productions of what we are calling post-migratory (second- and third-generation) postcolonial minorities. It provides a lens through which to query the dimensions of postcoloniality and transnationalism in relation to post-migratory postcolonial minorities in France and identifies points of convergence and conversation among them in the range of their cultural production.

Sie studierte Rehabilitationspsychologie an der Hochschule Magdeburg-Stendal, absolvierte ihren Master of Science in Psychologie an der Otago University in Neuseeland und promovierte 2012 an der Universität Osnabrück. Sie arbeitete als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Niedersächsischen Institut für frühkindliche Bildung und Entwicklung und als Postdoktorandin an der Universität Duisburg-Essen (LVR-Klinikum).     Abstract: We all know that speech can be harmful. But what are the harms and how exactly does the speech in question brings those harms about? Mary Kate McGowan identifies a previously overlooked mechanism by which speech constitutes, rather than merely causes, harm. She argues that speech constitutes harm when it enacts a norm that prescribes that harm. McGowan illustrates this theory by considering many categories of speech including sexist remarks, racist hate speech, pornography, verbal triggers for stereotype threat, micro-aggressions, political dog whistles, slam poetry, and even the hanging of posters. 'Just Words' explores a variety of harms - such as oppression, subordination, discrimination, domination, harassment, and marginalisation - and ways in which these harms can be remedied.

    Abstract: Anthrozoology, the study of human-animal interactions (HAIs), has experienced substantial growth during the past 20 years and it is now timely to synthesise what we know from empirical evidence about our relationships with both domesticated and wild animals. Two principal points of focus have become apparent in much of this research. One is the realisation that the strength of these attachments not only has emotional benefits for people, but confers health benefits as well, such that a whole area has opened up of using companion animals for therapeutic purposes. The other is the recognition that the interactions we have with animals have consequences for their welfare too, and thus impact on their quality of life. Consequently we now study HAIs in all scenarios in which animals come into contact with humans.

    Abstract: This handbook is the first volume to provide a comprehensive, in-depth, and balanced discussion of ellipsis phenomena, whereby a perceived interpretation is fuller than would be expected based solely on the presence of linguistic forms. Natural language abounds in these apparently incomplete expressions, such as I laughed but Ed didn’t, in which the final portion of the sentence, the verb ‘laugh’, remains unpronounced but is still understood. The range of phenomena involved raise general and fundamental questions about the workings of grammar, but also constitute a treasure trove of fine-grained points of inter- and intralinguistic variation. The volume is divided into four parts. In the first, the authors examine the role that ellipsis plays and how it is analyzed in different theoretical frameworks and linguistic subdisciplines, such as HPSG, construction grammar, inquisitive semantics, and computational linguistics. Chapters in the second part highlight the usefulness of ellipsis as a diagnostic tool for other linguistic phenomena including movement and islands and codeswitching, while Part III focuses instead on the types of elliptical constructions found in natural language, such as sluicing, gapping, and null complement anaphora. Finally, the last part of the book contains case studies that investigate elliptical phenomena in a wide variety of languages, including Dutch, Japanese, Persian, and Finnish Sign Language.

    Abstract: Given the vast inventory of verbal and visual images of nonhuman animals disseminated for millennia to debase and bestialize Jews (the Bestiarium Judaicum), this work asks: What is at play when Jewish-identified writers employ such figures in their narratives and poems? Bringing together Jewish cultural studies, examining how Jews have negotiated Jew-Gentile difference, and critical animal studies, analyzing the functions served by asserting human-animal difference, this monograph focuses on the writings of primarily Germanophone authors, including Sigmund Freud, Heinrich Heine, Franz Kafka, Gertrud Kolmar, H. Leivick, Felix Salten, and Curt Siodmak. It ferrets out of their nonhuman-animal constructions their responses to the bestial answers upon which the Jewish and animal questions converged and by which varieties of the species 'Jew' were depicted.

    Abstract: Religionslehrkräfte interagieren tagtäglich in ihrem Unterricht mit konfessionell, religiös und weltanschaulich heterogenen Gruppen. Diese Buntheit stellt sie angesichts von Subjekt- und Kompetenzorientierung mal vor kleinere, mal vor größere Herausforderungen. Selbstverständlich geht es hierbei immer um die Frage: Wie kann ich meinen Schüler*innen gerecht werden und für alle gewinnbringend mit der Vielfalt im Klassenzimmer umgehen?Kompetente und praktische Hilfe gibt dieses Buch – und trägt damit dem Umstand Rechnung, dass es für diese Herausforderungen bislang nur sehr wenige Gestaltungsentwürfe gibt. Die Herausgeber*innen und Autor*innen möchten zum einen die Situation der Diversität im heutigen Religionsunterricht erläutern und ausloten.
