    Abstract: 〈i〉Music Scenes and Migrations〈/i〉 brings together new work from Brazilian and European scholars around the themes of musical place and transnationalism across the Atlantic triangle connecting Brazil, Africa and Europe. Moving beyond now-contested models for conceptualizing international musical relations and hierarchies of powers and influence, such as global/local or centre/periphery, the volume draws attention instead to the role of the city, and in particular, in producing, signifying and mediating music-making in the colonial and post-colonial Portuguese-speaking world. In considering the roles played by cities as hubs of cultural intersection, socialization, exchange and transformation; as sites of political intervention and contestation; and as homes to large concentrations of consumers, technologies and media, Rio de Janeiro necessarily figures prominently, given its historical importance as an international port at the centre of the Lusophone Atlantic world. The volume also gives attention to other urban centres, within Brazil and abroad, towards which musicians and musical traditions have migrated and converged - such as São Paulo, Lisbon and Madrid - where they have reinvented themselves; where notions of Brazilian and Lusophone identity have been reconfigured; and where independent, peripheral and underground scenes have contested the hegemony of the musical 'mainstream'. 〈br〉〈br〉The contributions to the volume are grouped according to three key thematic areas: Colonial and post-Colonial transnationalisms, migrations and diasporas; relocating Rio de Janeiro; and demetropolitanizing the musical city: other scenes, industries, technologies

    Abstract: "In our globalized and transcultural world it has become more common than ever to live among different languages, to cross geographical and cultural borders frequently, to negotiate between multiple spaces and loyalties: from global businessmen to guest workers, from tourists to refugees. In this book, Siri Nergaard examines translation as a personal, intimate experience of a subject living in and among different languages and cultures and sees living in translation as a socio-psychological condition of transmigrancy with strong implications on emotions and behaviour. Adopting a wide transdisciplinary approach, drawing on theories in psychology, anthropology, cultural studies, semiotics and philosophy, the author investigates the situations of translation affecting individuals, and in particular migrants. With examples from documentaries, photographs, exhibitions, and testimonies, Nergaard also analyzes how migrants get translated in political discourse and in official documents, and how they perform their lives as transmigrants. The first part examines in particular three issues and concepts: the figure of the migrant, hospitality, and the border, which are viewed as representing the most fundamental questions of what living in translation means. The second part of the book presents examples of lives in translation through representations in a variety of modes and expressions. It is a book that deals with translation and nomadic identities, and with the many ways in which the increasing relevance of forced migrations has affected the practice of languages and the understanding of cultures in our times. Simona Bertacco and Nicoletta Vallorani examine the theoretical and practical nexus of translation and migration, two of the most visible and anxiety-producing keywords of our age, and use translation as the method for a global cultural theory firmly based in the humanities, both as creative output and interdisciplinary scholarship. Positioning their work within the field of translation studies with important borrowings from literary and cultural studies, visual and migration studies, the authors suggest a theory of translation that makes space for complexity, considers different "languages" (words, images, sounds, bodies), and takes into account both our emotional, pre-linguistic and instinctual reaction to the other as an invader and an enemy and the responsibility for the other that lies at the heart of translation. Kirsten Seidlitz untersucht, wie sie von Deutschland aus mit ihrem musikalischen Schaffen politisch kommentieren, inwiefern die deutsche Gesellschaft mit Musik erreicht, aufgeklärt und beeinflusst werden kann, und ob die in Deutschland produzierte Musik zurück in die Türkei gelangt.

    Abstract: Geflüchtete Frauen sprechen über ihr Leben in Berlin und die (Un-)Möglichkeit des AnkommensSeit 2015, dem Höhepunkt der so genannten ›Flüchtlingskrise‹, hat die Abschottung und Verschärfung des Asylrechts in Deutschland und der EU massiv zugenommen. Erstarkende rechtspopulistische Bewegungen quer durch Europa schaffen ein gesellschaftliches Klima, in dem körperliche und verbale Angriffe auf Menschen mit Migrationsgeschichte immer alltäglicher werden. Doch in den hierzulande geführten Debatten kommen geflüchtete Menschen selbst kaum zu Wort – insbesondere mangelt es an Aufmerksamkeit für die Sichtweisen von Frauen als Zeuginnen der aktuellen Geschehnisse. Mit diesem Buch fordern Frauen, die in den letzten Jahren nach Deutschland geflüchtet sind, Kontrolle über die Darstellung ihrer Lebensrealitäten im öffentlichen Raum. Das ist meine Geschichte dokumentiert sieben Gespräche, in denen sich Frauen in ihrer jeweiligen Muttersprache und in Deutsch über ihr Leben und die (Un)Möglichkeiten des Ankommens in Berlin unterhalten. Es geht um elementare Fragen: Welche Erfahrungen haben wir auf dem Weg der Flucht nach Deutschland gemacht? Wie wirken sich Verschärfungen im Asylrecht oder die Einschränkung der Familienzusammenführung auf unser Leben hier aus? Was erleichtert oder erschwert uns das Ankommen in der deutschen Gesellschaft? Welche Befürchtungen und welche Wünsche haben wir in Bezug auf die Zukunft? Die Perspektiven, aus denen heraus die Erzähler*innen über ihre Erlebnisse berichten, gewähren den Leser*innen – mal ernst, mal humorvoll – Einblick in sehr persönliche Erfahrungen mit Flucht und Ankommen.

    Abstract: Reconnecting migration studies and the theory of valuation, this collection offers an interdisciplinary approach to the study of transnational music practices.     Abstract: Was ist Heimat? Die Antworten sind vielfältig, denn längst ist Heimat zum politischen Kampfbegriff geworden. Die einen verbinden damit das Bewahren deutscher Kultur und Identität, die anderen setzen der vermeintlich überholten Idee neue Werte wie Weltoffenheit, Dynamik und Diversität entgegen. Der Band bietet einen innovativen Überblick über die Kultur- und Debattengeschichte des Heimatbegriffs seit dem 17. Jh. Die meist missverstandene Bewertung der Romantik von Heimat wird ebenso behandelt wie die Propaganda in der Kolonialzeit, im Ersten Weltkrieg und im Nationalsozialismus. Ein systematischer Teil beleuchtet im Kontext von Heimat umstrittene Begriffe wie Kitsch oder Nostalgie. Damit leistet der Band einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Versachlichung einer ideologisch stark aufgeladenen Debatte und hilft, die oft zu Schlagworten verkürzten Argumente besser zu verstehen.
    Abstract: Der Begriff Heimat polarisiert. In der politischen Debatte wird er von Verteidigern wie Kritikern instrumentalisiert. Susanne Scharnowski zeichnet erstmals die Entwicklung des Heimatgedankens in der deutschen Kulturgeschichte vom 17. Jh. bis heute nach und diskutiert sein Verhältnis zu Romantik, Kitsch, Nostalgie, Fremdenhass und Drittem Reich.

Sie ist eine Form von Zugehörigkeit, auf die viele Faktoren Einfluss haben: Geburtsort, Wohnort, Schule, Umgebung, Sprache: Welcher Faktor den Ausschlag für eine Selbst- oder Fremdzuschreibung gibt, ist individuell unterschiedlich. Philip Bracker zeigt, wie ethnische Identität in den Erfahrungen der InformantInnen auftaucht und in welchen Konstellationen sie in der Interaktion zwischen Individuum und sozialer Umgebung hervortritt. Dabei wird besonders die ausgrenzende Wirkung alltagsüblicher Begriffe erkennbar. Es stellt sich heraus, dass ethnisierende Begriffe in vielen Situationen nicht die Realität der InformantInnen widerspiegeln und Zuschreibungen als diskriminierend empfunden werden. Mit den Lebensgeschichten der InformantInnen und ihren Erfahrungen im Rücken argumentiert der Autor dafür, ethnische Identität als wandelbar zu verstehen und Hybriditäten, Teilidentitäten und situations- und altersabhängige Umgestaltungen anzuerkennen.     Abstract: "This book explores the language and literacy practices which sustain transnational migration across generations and across traditional boundaries such as school and home. The author has conducted extensive fieldwork in Pakistan and the UK to study migration between the two countries. Individuals' access to the dominant literacies of migration are contrasted with the vernacular practices which migrants take up at home as part of their digital literacies. The study explores the blurring of boundaries between home and school as well as the blurring of boundaries between language varieties. Tracing access to literacy in this way also shines a light on the literacy mediators migrants turn to for help with English language learning and when trying to access the bureaucratic literacies of migration. The study ends by exploring how migrants use all of their language resources, not just English, to fit into their new homes once they have arrived in the UK."--
