    Abstract: Schon vor 50 Jahren kämpfte Afrika um seine Kunst, die während der Kolonialzeit massenweise in europäische Museen gelangt war. Und es fand durchaus Unterstützung im Westen. Am Ende jedoch war der Kampf nicht nur vergebens, er wurde auch erfolgreich vergessen gemacht. Auf der Grundlage von unzähligen unbekannten Quellen aus Europa und Afrika erzählt Bénédicte Savoy die gespenstische Geschichte einer verpassten Chance, einer Niederlage, die heute mit umso größerer Wucht auf uns zurückschlägt. Afrikas Bemühungen um seine in der Kolonialzeit nach Europa verbrachte Kunst sind keineswegs neu. Schon bald nach 1960, als 18 ehemalige Kolonien die Unabhängigkeit erlangten, wurde von afrikanischen Intellektuellen, Politikern und Museumsleuten eine ungeheure Dynamik in Gang gesetzt. In ganz Europa suchten daraufhin Politikerinnen und Politiker, Journalisten, Akademiker und einige Museumsleute einen Weg, afrikanische Kulturgüter im Sinne einer postkolonialen und postrassistischen Solidarität zurückzugeben. Die Argumente aber, mit denen andere versuchten, die Forderungen aus Afrika zu entkräften und Lösungen zu verhindern, ähneln auf frappierende Weise denen von heute. Schließlich verlief alles im Sand. „Gebt koloniale Raubkunst zurück! Dafür engagiert sich Bénédicte Savoy. In ihrem Buch zeigt die Kunsthistorikerin nun, dass ihr Kampf ein alter ist. Schon in den 1960er-Jahren drängten die neu gegründeten Staaten Afrikas auf eine Rückführung – erfolglos.     Abstract: "TECHNOCRATS OF THE IMAGINATION traces the rise of collaborative art and technology labs in the U.S. from WWII to the present. Ryan Bishop and John Beck reveal the intertwined histories of the avant-garde art movement and the military-industrial complex, showing how radical pedagogical practices traveled from Germany's Bauhaus movement to the U.S. art world and interacted with government-funded military research and development in university laboratories. During the 1960s both media labs and studio labs leaned heavily on methods of interdisciplinary collaboration and the power of American modernity to model new modes of social organization. The book's chapters take up MIT's Center for Art, Science, and Technology, Bell Labs's E.A.T. (Experiments in Art and Technology) Salon, and Los Angeles Museum of Art's Art + Technology Program. Their interconnected history illuminates how much of contemporary media culture and aesthetics depends on the historical relationship between military, corporate, and university actors. In light of revived interest in Black Mountain College and other 1960s art and technology labs, this book draws important connections between the contemporary art world and the militarized lab model of research that has dominated the sciences since the 1950s. The authors situate the rise of collaborative art and technology projects in the 1960s within John Dewey's ideology of scientific democracy, showing how leading thinkers from the Bauhaus movement in Germany immigrated to the U.S. and brought with them a Deweyan model for collaborative and interdisciplinary art and technology research. Over the course of the decade, the U.S. government increased funding to scientific research at university and private laboratories. Beck and Bishop investigate how various art and technology projects incorporated the collaborative and innovative interdisciplinarity of the avant-garde art movement with the corporate funding structure driven by the U.S. government's military and technoscientific interests. Finally, the authors consider the legacy of 1960s art and technology projects. During the 1970s and 80s, defense R&D funding was less motivated by a Cold War corporate state, and was instead restructured according to an entrepreneurial and neoliberal model.     Abstract: "Dress became a testing ground for masculine ideals in Renaissance Italy. With the establishment of the ducal regime in Florence in 1530, there was increasing debate about how to be a nobleman. Was fashionable clothing a sign of magnificence or a source of mockery? Was the graceful courtier virile or effeminate? How could a man dress for court without bankrupting himself? This book explores the whole story of clothing, from the tailor's workshop to spectacular court festivities, to show how the male nobility in one of Italy's main textile production centres used their appearances to project social, sexual, and professional identities. Sixteenth-century male fashion is often associated with swagger and ostentation but this book shows that Florentine clothing reflected manhood at a much deeper level, communicating a very Italian spectrum of male virtues and vices, from honour, courage, and restraint to luxury and excess. Situating dress at the heart of identity formation, Currie traces these codes through an array of sources, including unpublished archival records, surviving garments, portraiture, poetry, and personal correspondence between the Medici and their courtiers.     Abstract: In the 1960s and early 1970s, Chicago witnessed a remarkable flourishing of visual arts associated with the Black Arts Movement. From the painting of murals as a way to reclaim public space and the establishment of independent community art centers to the work of the AFRICOBRA collective and Black filmmakers, artists on Chicago's South and West Sides built a vision of art as service to the people. In Art for People's Sake Rebecca Zorach traces the little-told story of the visual arts of the Black Arts Movement in Chicago, showing how artistic innovations responded to decades of racist urban planning that left Black neighborhoods sites of economic depression, infrastructural decay, and violence. Working with community leaders, children, activists, gang members, and everyday people, artists developed a way of using art to help empower and represent themselves.     Abstract: As a teenager, I spent my time wondering why in sci-fi movies, every landscape, every object I could see was Western or Asian based. I've finally understood that somewhere our legacy had been locked in the past, that we couldn't be "futuristic" in the eyes of our fellow Europeans. We have to look behind our shoulders, get back to our traditions, seize the best of them and shape a future with it. This without forgetting we are part of the world, totally, unquestionably. The future is for me not only a matter of dialogue with the past, but and beyond everything a dialogue with the rest of the planet. Kossi Aguessy How is it possible to adequately capture histories of design in Africa, a continent with fifty-four countries? How can one avoid producing just another essentialising master narrative of "African Design"? How can one make sense of the many entangled yet often asymmetric and sometimes ambivalent histories of form-finding processes between Africa and Europe? In keeping with the premises of a global art and design history approach, the book offers a change of perspective: focusing on the mobility of people, objects and ideas - on flows between Africa and Europe as well as on a South-South axis - allows for multiple yet necessarily fragmented design histories to be identified and recognised. The contributors trace multi-faceted design case studies from a historical perspective, with attention to the present as well as towards possible futures.

    Abstract: "Dress became a testing ground for masculine ideals in Renaissance Italy. With the establishment of the ducal regime in Florence in 1530, there was increasing debate about how to be a nobleman. Was fashionable clothing a sign of magnificence or a source of mockery? Was the graceful courtier virile or effeminate? How could a man dress for court without bankrupting himself? This book explores the whole story of clothing, from the tailor's workshop to spectacular court festivities, to show how the male nobility in one of Italy's main textile production centres used their appearances to project social, sexual, and professional identities. Sixteenth-century male fashion is often associated with swagger and ostentation but this book shows that Florentine clothing reflected manhood at a much deeper level, communicating a very Italian spectrum of male virtues and vices, from honour, courage, and restraint to luxury and excess. Situating dress at the heart of identity formation, Currie traces these codes through an array of sources, including unpublished archival records, surviving garments, portraiture, poetry, and personal correspondence between the Medici and their courtiers. Addressing important themes such as gender, politics, and consumption, Fashion and Masculinity in Renaissance Florence sheds fresh light on the sartorial culture of the Florentine court and Italy as a whole"...

    Abstract: Georges Adéagbo zählt zu den bekanntesten Gegenwartskünstlern Afrikas. Seine ästhetische Praxis zwischen Kulturtransfer und Ortsspezifik setzt eine Auflösung kolonialkultureller Hierarchien zwischen Afrika und Europa in Gang, ohne Differenz zu nivellieren. Sie besitzt Modellcharakter für den Umgang mit Alterität jenseits von Exotismus oder Universalismus und eignet sich deshalb besonders gut dazu, Paradoxien des globalen Kunstsystems aufzuzeigen. Angesichts der eurozentristischen Rezeption von Kunst aus Afrika dient Adéagbos Arbeitsweise in diesem Band als Ausgangspunkt für ebenso systematische wie fruchtbare Überlegungen zu einer transkulturellen Kunstgeschichtsschreibung.     Abstract: "At the beginning of the twentieth century, Paris was the cosmopolitan hub of Europe and home to a vast number of foreigners - including the writers, painters, sculptors, and musicians who were creating works now synonymous with modernism itself, such as Les Desmoiselles d'Avignon, The Rite of Spring, and Ulysses. The situation at the end of the period, however, could not have been more different: even before the violence of the Second World War, the cosmopolitan avant-garde had largely abandoned Paris, driven out by nationalism, xenophobia, and intolerance
    Abstract: Foreign Modernism investigates this tense and transitional moment for both modernism and European multiculturalism by looking at the role of foreigners in Paris's artistic scene. Examining works of literature, sculpture, ballet and performing arts, music, and architecture, Ihor Junyk combines cultural history with contemporary work in transnationalism and diaspora studies.     Abstract: Das vorliegende Buch erschien begleitend zu der Ausstellung "Who knows tomorrow", die im Sommer 2010 stattfand. An vier verschiedenen Orten Berlins veranschaulichten die fünf aus Afrika stammenden Künstler El Anatsui, Zarina Bhimji, António Ole, Yinka Shonibare MBE und Pascale Marthine Tayou ihre individuelle Sicht auf deutsche Kultur und deren Geschichte. Ihre Werke zeigen historische Verbindungen und Wechselbeziehungen zwischen dem afrikanischen und dem europäischen Kontinent und thematisieren Aspekte der Identitätsfindung und Globalisierung. Der vorliegende Begleitband enthält Beiträge verschiedener Autoren zu den Wechselbeziehungen zwischen Afrika und Deutschland im Bereich der Kunst. So berichtet beispielsweise Bartholomäus Grill über die immergleiche Wahrnehmung des schwarzen Kontinents und die Entstehungsgeschichte der Ausstellung, Christoph Schlingensief erzählt über sein geplantes Projekt, das Operndorf Remdoogo in Burkina Faso, und Fatima El-Tayeb erörtert die Vorstellungen von Rasse, Kolonialismus und deutschnationaler Identität in wilhelminischer Zeit. Die Aufsätze sind sowohl auf Deutsch als auch auf Englisch verfasst und enthalten erläuternde Karten und Bilder. Im Mittelteil des Sammelbands werden die afrikanischen Künstler anhand einer Kurzbiografie und einer Darstellung ihrer Arbeit vorgestellt.     Abstract: Main description: Als dezidierter Beitrag zur Kunst- und Kulturgeschichte des Politischen fragt das Buch nach der Inanspruchnahme von Kunst zur Herrschaftsrepräsentation, nach Ritualen und Zeichensystemen der Macht am französischen Königshof in der ersten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts. Kunstförderung und Herrschaftshandeln werden hierbei als strukturhomologe Strategien eines (früh)modernen Politikmodells analysiert. Die Entscheidung für einen spezifisch "modernen" Kunststil – den italienischen Manierismus – wurde für den französischen König François Ier zum Politikum: Er schuf sich in Fontainebleau ein Reich mit künstlerischen Mitteln, über das er jederzeit im Sinne der Deutungshoheit als Herrschaftsakt verfügen konnte. Kunstwerke von Rosso Fiorentino, Benvenuto Cellini und Primaticcio, die in ihrer Skurrilität und Vielschichtigkeit die sinnliche Ausgangsevidenz für eine lohnende Betrachtung bieten; historische Szenen auf höchster machtpolitischer Ebene, die sich in ihrer kommunikativen und zeremoniellen Funktion erst dem ethnographisch-verfremdenden Blick erschließen; schließlich ein höfisches Milieu, in dem Intellekt, Macht, Witz, Hermetik und Erotik eine unauflösliche Verbindung eingehen: Was könnten reizvollere Quellen für die Erschließung der Spezifika von Manierismus und Herrschaftspraxis am französischen Hof im Kontext des europäischen Mächtesystems nach 1500 sein?
