    Kurzfassung: Based on extensive original research at the local level, this book explores the relationship between Russian Orthodoxy and politics in contemporary Russia. It reveals close personal links between politicians at the local, regional and national levels and their counterparts at the equivalent level in the Russian Orthodox Church – priests and monks, bishops and archbishops – who are extensively consulted about political decisions. It outlines a convergence of conservative ideology between politicians and clerics and also highlights that, despite working closely together, there are nevertheless many tensions. The book examines in detail particular areas of cooperation and tension: reform to religious education and a growing emphasis on traditional moral values, the restitution of former church property and the introduction of new festive days. Overall, the book concludes that there is much uncertainty, ambiguity and great local variation.

    Kurzfassung: This comparative and multi-level study of state responses is confronted with huge complexity. Almost all existing theoretical and methodological approaches -such as secularism (including multiple secularisms or post-secularism)- do not take these complexities seriously into account, focusing on one concept only (wrong Leitdifferenz). They neglect different meanings of terms for agents in the field and they neglect the importance of different levels of governance, times, issues and minorities. This study, however, highlights minimally necessary complexity without drowning in this complexity. It draws clear conceptual, theoretical and methodological lessons, also in a broader sense for the study of governance of religious and cultural diversity and for the governance of migrations.     Kurzfassung: "Haben Muslime ihre eigene Religion verfälscht? Nichts Geringeres als eine grundlegende Kritik des Islams proklamiert Mouhanad Khorchide in seinem neuen Buch „Gottes falsche Anwälte“. Seine provokante Hauptthese lautet: Bei dem Islam, wie er sich heute den meisten Muslimen wie Nichtmuslimen präsentiert und wie er von vielen Gläubigen praktiziert wird, handelt es sich um eine manipulierte Version dieser Religion. Eine Manipulation, die nicht etwa von außen kommt, sondern auf die Muslime selbst zurückgeht. Und, besonders pointiert: Diese Manipulation fand nicht spät und von irgendwelchen modernen Fanatikern statt, sondern bereits in der Frühgeschichte des Islams kurz nach dem Tod Mohammeds. Diese Manipulation, so zeigt Khorchide weiter, ist keinswegs eine rein historische Angelegenheit, vielmehr prägen ihre Konsequenzen die Gegenwart und betreffen vor allem die heutigen Muslime. Um sie zu überwinden, fordert der Soziologe, islamische Theologe und Professor für Islamische Religionspädagogik ein hohes Maß an Selbstkritik und eine schonungsloser Analyse der aktuellen Situation - genau das liefert sein neues Werk. Zwei Teile mit jeweils zehn Thesen prägen das Buch: Der erste Teil setzt sich mit dem manipulierten Islam, seinen Hintergründen in der Geschichte und der Gegenwart sowie mit seinen Auswirkungen auf die Muslime weltweit und hier in Deutschland auseinander. Der zweite Teil will die Frage beantworten, wie der Islam zu seinem ursprünglichen Kern zurückfinden und wie es aufgeklärten Sichtweisen des Islams gelingen kann, an Einfluss zu gewinnen.In diesem ebenso mutigen wie innovativen Buch steht daher nicht die Schuldfrage im Mittelpunkt, sondern ein tiefes Verstehen der Strukturen der Unterdrückung im islamischen Kontext. Aber noch mehr: Khorchide geht es darum, ein Verständnis vom Islam zu entwerfen, das die Befreiungspotenziale dieser Religion zur Entfaltung bringt. Er will den Teufelskreis der Schuldzuweisungen und des daraus resultierenden Opferdiskurses unter vielen Muslimen überwinden. Und Khorchide wagt es, mit einem analytischen Blick in die Vergangenheit und Zukunft zu blicken, um Muslimen Wege aufzuzeigen, wie sie sich von Unterdrückungsstrukturen befreien zu können. Mutig und ohne Kompromisse beschreibt Mouhanad Khorchide den Verrat des Islams durch seine falschen Anwälte, die vermeintlich im Namen Gottes sprechen. Ein Meilenstein! (Verlagsinformation)

    Kurzfassung: Since the elections of 2002, Erdogan's AKP has dominated the political scene in Turkey. This period has often been understood as a break from a 'secular' pattern of state-building. But in this book, Ceren Lord shows how Islamist mobilisation in Turkey has been facilitated from within the state by institutions established during early nation-building. Lord thus challenges the traditional account of Islamist AKP's rise that sees it either as a grassroots reaction to the authoritarian secularism of the state or as a function of the state's utilisation of religion. Tracing struggles within the state, Lord also shows how the state's principal religious authority, the Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) competed with other state institutions to pursue Islamisation. Through privileging Sunni Muslim access to state resources to the exclusion of others, the Diyanet has been a key actor ensuring persistence and increasing salience of religious markers in political and economic competition, creating an amenable environment for Islamist mobilisation.

Considering both Sufi- and Salafi-oriented movements in their respective historical contexts, it stresses the importance of the local context to explain the different trajectories of development. The book studies the social, religious and political impact of these reform movements in both historical and contemporary times and asks why some have become successful as popular mass movements, while others failed to attract substantial audiences. It also considers jihad-minded movements in contemporary Mali, northern Nigeria and Somalia and looks at modes of transnational entanglement of movements of reform.     Kurzfassung: "In some religious countries, churches have drafted constitutions, restricted abortion, and controlled education. In others, church influence on public policy is far weaker. Why? Nations under God argues that where religious and national identities have historically fused, churches gain enormous moral authority--and covert institutional access. These powerful churches then shape policy in backrooms and secret meetings instead of through open democratic channels such as political parties or the ballot box. Through an in-depth historical analysis of six Christian democracies that share similar religious profiles yet differ in their policy outcomes--Ireland and Italy, Poland and Croatia, and the United States and Canada--Anna Grzymała-Busse examines how churches influenced education, abortion, divorce, stem cell research, and same-sex marriage. She argues that churches gain the greatest political advantage when they appear to be above politics. Because institutional access is covert, they retain their moral authority and their reputation as defenders of the national interest and the common good. Nations under God shows how powerful church officials in Ireland, Canada, and Poland have directly written legislation, vetoed policies, and vetted high-ranking officials. It demonstrates that religiosity itself is not enough for churches to influence politics--churches in Italy and Croatia, for example, are not as influential as we might think--and that churches allied to political parties, such as in the United States, have less influence than their notoriety suggests"--

While the two have come apart through the process of secularization, secularism is challenged today by the return of public religion. This cogent analysis unravels the nature of the connection, disconnection, and attempted reconnection between religion and politics in the West.In a comparison of Western Europe and North America, Christianity and Islam, Joppke advances far-reaching theoretical, historical, and comparative-political arguments.     Kurzfassung: Der vierte Band der "Hamburger Historischen Forschungen" umfasst in erster Linie die Edition eines unveroeffentlichten Textes. Autor ist der Theologe Prof. Dr. Dr. Paul Schuetz (1891–1985), der von 1940 bis 1952 Hauptpastor an der Hamburger Hauptkirche St. Nikolai war und zugleich als hauptamtlicher Dozent und spaeter als Professor der Theologie an der Kirchlichen Hochschule Hamburg lehrte. Er gehoert zu den ersten, die ein Konzept der politischen Religion entwickelten. Sein 1935 verfasster Beitrag konnte damals nicht publiziert werden.Heute ist eine Edition dieses Beitrages zum einen wichtig für die Theologie- und Kirchengeschichte. Zum anderen gibt es seit einigen Jahren in der historischen Forschung eine intensive Diskussion über die in den Dreissigerjahren des 20. Jahrhunderts entwickelte Interpretation des „Dritten Reiches“ als „politische Religion“. Dieses Modell, das Diktaturen, insbesondere den Nationalsozialismus, als „politische Religion“ versteht, wird im Allgemeinen Eric Voegelin und Raymond Aron zugeschrieben, die ihre Ansaetze 1938 bzw. 1939 publizierten.Dass Paul Schuetz schon drei bzw. vier Jahre zuvor eine solche Konzeption entwickelt hatte, war bis vor Kurzem nicht bekannt. Die vorliegende Edition kann daher neue Impulse für die Debatte über die Geschichte und Tragfaehigkeit dieses Ansatzes geben und sie inhaltlich bereichern
    Kurzfassung: The fourth volume of the "Hamburg Historical research" includes mainly the edition of an so far unpublished text. The author is the theologian Prof. Dr. Dr. Paul Schuetz (1891-1985), who was chief minister from 1940 to 1952 at the Hamburg Main St. Nikolai church and as a full-time lecturer and professor of theology at the University Church of Hamburg. He is among the first who developed a concept of political religion. His 1935 contribution couldn't be published at this time.Today an edition of this contribution is important for theology and church history. Also there is the discussion in historical research of interpreting the "Third Reich" as a "political religion". This model understands dictatorships, especially the National Socialism, as a "political religion", is generally attributed to Eric Voegelin and Raymond Aron, who published their approaches in 1938 and 1939. The fact that Paul Schuetz had three or four years previously developed such a conception, was until recently unknown. The present edition can therefore give new impetus to the debate about the history and viability of this approach and enrich their content

Dafür haben nicht nur die Terroranschläge des 11. September 2001 gesorgt. Der Streit über Kruzifix und Kopftuch im Klassenzimmer, die Debatte über eine religiöse Präambel der europäischen Verfassung und die Auseinandersetzungen über den angestrebten EU-Beitritt der Türkei haben die Frage nach der politischen, sozialen und kulturellen Bedeutung der Religion in einer säkularen Gesellschaft erneut in den Mittelpunkt gerückt. Welche Rolle Religion in der Öffentlichkeit einer modernen Gesellschaft zukommen sollte, wird in diesem Band in interdisziplinärer Perspektive erörtert. Die Beiträge gehen zurück auf eine internationale Konferenz des Instituts für religionsphilosophische Forschung (IRF) der Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität in Frankfurt am Main

    Kurzfassung: Adeeb Khalid combines insights from the study of both Islam and Soviet history in this sophisticated analysis of the ways that Muslim societies in Central Asia have been transformed by the Soviet presence in the region. Arguing that the utopian Bolshevik project of remaking the world featured a sustained assault on Islam that destroyed patterns of Islamic learning and thoroughly de-Islamized public life, Khalid demonstrates that Islam became synonymous with tradition and was subordinated to powerful ethnonational identities that crystallized during the Soviet period. He shows how this legacy endures today and how, for the vast majority of the population, a return to Islam means the recovery of traditions destroyed under Communism.
