    Abstract: Since Pierre Bourdieu, we have known that the body forms incorporated cultural and social capital. It is a commodity and means of production, a sign of belonging to a social class, a place where sex, gender and power relations are negotiated or a pretext for social exclusions and racism. The body is the object of punishments, sanctions and social control, a support for affects, obsessions and illnesses as well as a site of rebellion and resistance. The 19th century novels analyzed in the contributions to this volume tell all this. From the perspective of current body studies, we propose a new reading of the great stories from Balzac to Zola, via Mirbeau, Maupassant, Louise Michel, Georges Sand, Rachilde, Eugène Sue and Huysmans to demonstrate, through their texts, how the Images of the body and the policies of capital are part of the imagination and memory of 19th century French society

    Abstract: Kennen Sie die Geheimsprache der Pariser Metzger? Stéphane Hardys kulturhistorische, lexikologische und soziolinguistische Darstellung des largonji du louchébem gewährt exklusive Einblicke in die verborgene Welt einer ganz besonderen Sprechergruppe. Der fast ausschließlich in der gesprochenen Form verwendete louchébem ist eine „verhüllende Sondersprache“. Für Außenstehende ist er nicht verständlich und soll es auch nicht sein. In der Fachliteratur galt der louchébem als nahezu ausgestorben. So hat diese Thematik in der (franko-)romanistischen Sprachwissenschaft bisher nur wenig Beachtung gefunden. Doch der largonji du louchébem ist sehr lebendig. Das weist die Autorin mit ihrer qualitativ-empirischen Studie auf der Basis umfangreichen authentischen Gesprächsmaterials nach.

Through close reading of her writing in many genres, alongside contemporaneous discourses (good and bad novels in French and English, outmoded psychoanalytic and sexological authorities, ethnographic surrealism, the writing of Richard Wright and Franz Fanon), and in light of her travels to the U.S. and China, the author uncovers insights more recent feminist methodologies obscure, showing Beauvoir is still good to think with today"--

    Abstract: Not so long ago, it seemed the intellectual positions on globalization were clear, with advocates and opponents making their respective cases in decidedly contrasting terms. Recently, however, the fronts have shifted dramatically. The aim of this publication is to contribute philosophical depth to the debates on globalization conducted within various academic fields - principally by working out its normative dimensions. The interdisciplinary nature of this book's contributors also serves to scientifically ground the ethical-philosophical discourse on global responsibility. Though by no means exhaustive, the expansive scope of the works herein encompasses such other topics as the altering consciousness of space and time, and the phenomenon of globalization as a discourse, as an ideology and as a symbolic form.

    Abstract: This book analyzes and contextualizes Auerbach ’s life and mind in the wide ideological, philological, and historical context of his time, especially the rise of Aryan philology and its eventual triumph with the Nazi Revolution or the Hitler Revolution in Germany of 1933. It deals specifically with his struggle against the premises of Aryan philology, based on völkisch mysticism and Nazi historiography, which eliminated the Old Testament from German Kultur and Volksgeist in particular, and Western culture and civilization in general. It examines in detail his apologia for, or defense and justification of, Western Judaeo-Christian humanist tradition at its gravest existential moment. It discusses Auerbach’s ultimate goal, which was to counter the overt racist tendencies and völkish ideology in Germany, or the belief in the Community of Blood and Fate of the German people, which sharply distinguished between Kultur and civilization and glorified völkisch nationalism over European civilization. The volume includes an analysis of the entire twenty chapters of Auerbach’s most celebrated book: Mimesis: The Representation of Reality in Western Literature, 1946

    Abstract: Why did France spawn the radical poststructuralist rejection of the humanist concept of 'man' as a rational, knowing subject? In this innovative cultural history, Carolyn J. Dean sheds light on the origins of poststructuralist thought, paying particular attention to the reinterpretation of the self by Jacques Lacan, Georges Bataille, and other French thinkers. Arguing that the widely shared belief that the boundaries between self and other had disappeared during the Great War helps explain the genesis of the new concept of the self, Dean examines an array of evidence from medical texts and literary works alike. We learn how their rewriting of classics such as The Lady of the Camellias and their response to a male “backlash” inspire Colette in previously unseen ways.’ - Nicholas White, University of Cambridge, UK This book is about the autobiographical fictions of nineteenth-century French courtesans. In response to damaging representations of their kind in Zola and Alexandre Dumas' novels, Céleste de Chabrillan, Valtesse de la Bigne, and Liane de Pougy crafted fictions recounting their triumphs as celebrities of the demi-monde and their outcries against the social injustices that pushed them into prostitution. Although their works enjoyed huge success in the second half of the nineteenth century, male writers penned faux-memoirs mocking courtesan novels, and successfully sowed doubt about their authorship in a backlash against the profitable notoriety the novels earned these courtesans. Colette, who did not write from personal experience but rather out of sympathy for the courtesans with whom she socialized, innovated the genre when she wrote three novels exploring the demi-mondaine’s life beyond prostitution and youth

    Abstract: Dieses Buch entfaltet, wie das „originäre Wie“ des Lebens als sein Sich-Selbst-Sagen durch sein Sich-Selbst-Erscheinen zu verstehen ist. Eine solche radikal phänomenologische Problematik wird dabei unter dem umfassenden Begriff der Narrativität subsumiert. Entsprechend wird im Buch konkret analysiert, dass solches „Sagen“ überall dort stattfindet, wo sich Leben als selbstaffektive Passibilität ohne irgendeine Differenz vollzieht: im reinen Cogito als „Ich kann“, im Fleisch als Affekt und Trieb, in der kulturellen Lebenswelt als Ökonomie und Ideologie. Diesem konsequenten Aufbau gehorchen die beiden Hauptteile I und II, wobei sich die Einzeluntersuchungen solcher Narrativität in ihrer lebensphänomenologischen Ursprünglichkeit von der klassischen Bewusstseinslehre wie der ihr entsprechenden Ontologie als einer „Metaphysik der Repräsentation“ in all ihren wirkungsgeschichtlichen Formen abgrenzen. Ein solcher Zugang zur Lebensphänomenologie wird auf diese Weise zum ersten Mal in der Forschung durchgeführt und damit gleichzeitg ein fundamentaler Beitrag zum Verständnis des Denkens Michels Henrys und den Aufgaben der neueren Phänomenologie geleistet.

    Abstract: Neorealism and the "New" Italy centers on neorealist Italian artists' use of compassion as a vehicle to express their characters' interactions. Simonetta Milli Konewko proposes that compassion as an emotion may be activated to unify certain individuals and communities and investigates the mechanisms that allowed compassion to operate during the postwar period. Aiming to produce a deeper understanding of the ways in which Italy is re-encoded and reconstructed, this book explores the formation of Italian identity and redefines neorealism as a topic of investigation

    Abstract: This book offers a cross-cultural comparison of French and British cosmetics advertisements and explores how the discourse of beauty advertising represents ideas about femininity in French and English language contexts. As the global beauty industry expands and consumers become more critical of the claims made, the topic of cosmetics advertising discourse is examined using Feminist Critical Discourse Analysis. One common theme underlying most cosmetics advertising discourse is that the female body always requires ‘work’ to fix its ‘problems’: flat skin, dry hair, and so on. The author uses themes of language and gender, media and identity, and advertising across cultures to expose exactly what is going on in the language of cosmetics advertising and to offer a first step towards challenging these ideas and thinking about alternatives. Helen Ringrow is Lecturer in Communication Studies and Applied Linguistics at the University of Portsmouth, UK. Prior to this, she completed her PhD in Linguistics at Queen’s University Belfast, Northern Ireland, where she also contributed to undergraduate teaching on language and power.
