Dubrofsky explores the idea that popular media implicitly portrays whiteness as credible, trustworthy, familiar, and honest, and that this portrayal is normalized and ubiquitous. Whether on television, film, social media, or in the news, white people are constructed as believable and unrehearsed, from the way they talk to how they look and act. Dubrofsky argues that this way of making white people appear authentic is a strategy of whiteness, requiring attentiveness to the context of white supremacy in which the presentations unfold. The volume details how ideas about what is natural, good, and wholesome are reified in media, showing how these values are implicitly racialized. Additionally, the project details how white women are presented as particularly authentic when they seem to lose agency by expressing affect through emotional and bodily displays. The chapters examine a range of popular media-newspaper articles about Donald J. Trump, a selfie taken at Auschwitz, music videos by Miley Cyrus, the television series UnREAL, the infamous video of Amy Cooper calling the police on an innocent Black man, and the documentary Miss Americana-pinpointing patterns that cut across media to explore the implications for the larger culture in which they exist.     Kurzfassung: In this book, Ramzi Fawaz explores how the central values of 1970s movements for women's and gay liberation-including consciousness-raising, separatism, and coming out of the closet-were translated into a range of American popular culture forms. Throughout this period, feminist and gay activists fought social and political battles to expand, transform, or wholly explode definitions of so-called "normal" gender and sexuality. In doing so, they inspired artists, writers, and filmmakers to invent new ways of formally representing, or giving shape to, non-normative genders and sexualities. This included placing women, queers, and gender outlaws of all stripes into exhilarating new environments-from the streets of an increasingly gay San Francisco to a post-apocalyptic commune, from an upper-East Side New York City apartment to an all-female version of Earth-and finding new ways to formally render queer genders and sexualities by articulating them to figures, outlines, or icons that could be imagined in the mind's eye and interpreted by diverse publics. Surprisingly, such creative attempts to represent queer gender and sexuality often appeared in a range of traditional, or seemingly generic, popular forms including the sequential format of comic strip serials, the token figures of science fiction genre, the narrative conventions of film melodrama, and the serialized rhythm of installment fiction. Through studies of queer and feminist cultural productions including Mart Crowley's The Boys in the Band (1970), Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City (1976-1983), Lizzy Borden's Born in Flames (1983), and Tony Kushner's Angels in America (1989-1991), Fawaz show how artists innovated in many popular mediums and genres to make the experience of gender and sexual non-conformity recognizable to mass audiences in the modern US. Ultimately, Queer Forms tells the pre-history of the contemporary renaissance in feminist and LGBTQ political cultures by developing a genealogy of late twentieth-century artifacts that projected images of gender and sexual rebellion, which came to infuse the American popular imagination in the 1970s and after.

    Kurzfassung: "Republicans and Democrats increasingly distrust, avoid, and wish harm upon those from the other party. To make matters worse, they also increasingly reside among like-minded others and are part of social groups that share their political beliefs. All of this can make expressing a dissenting political opinion hard. Yet digital and social media have given people new spaces for political discourse and community, and more control over who knows their political beliefs and who does not. With Democracy Lives in Darkness, Van Duyn looks at what these changes in the political and media landscape mean for democracy. She uncovers and follows a secret political organization in rural Texas over the entire Trump presidency. The group, which organized out of fear of their conservative community in 2016, has a confidentiality agreement, an email listserv and secret Facebook group, and meets in secret every month. By building relationships with members, she explores how and why they hide their beliefs and what this does for their own political behavior and for their community. Drawing on research from communication, political science, and sociology along with survey data on secret political expression, she finds that polarization has led even average partisans to hide their political beliefs from others. And although intensifying polarization will likely make political secrecy more common, she argues that this secrecy is not just evidence that democracy is hurting, but that it is still alive; that people persist in the face of opposition and that this matters if democracy is to survive"--

    Kurzfassung: "By analyzing how various media told stories about Jewish celebrities and incest, Unsettling illustrates how Jewish community protective politics impacted the representation of white male Jewish masculinity in the 1990s. Chapters on Woody Allen, Roseanne Barr, and Henry Roth demonstrate how media coverage of their respective incest denials (Allen), allegations (Barr), and confessions (Roth) intersect with a history of sexual antisemitism, while an introductory chapter on Jewish second-wave feminist criticism of Sigmund Freud considers how Freud became "white" in these discussions. Unsettling reveals how film, TV, and literature have helped displace once prevalent antisemitic stereotypes onto those who are non-Jewish, nonwhite, and poor. In considering how whiteness functions for an ethno-religious group with historic vulnerability to incest stereotype as well as contemporary white privilege, Unsettling demonstrates how white Jewish men accused of incest, and even those who defiantly confess it, became improbably sympathetic figures representing supposed white male vulnerability"--

    Kurzfassung: "Rather than a media history of the region or a history of southern media, Remediating Region: New Media and the U.S. South formulates a critical methodology for studying the continuous reinventions of regional space across media platforms. This innovative collection demonstrates that structures of media undergird American regionalism through the representation of a given geography's peoples, places, and ideologies. It also outlines how the region answers back to the national media by circulating ever-shifting ideas of place via new platforms that allow for self-representation outside previously sanctioned media forms. Remediating Region recognizes that all media was once new media. In examining how changes in information and media modify concepts of region, it both articulates the virtual realities of the twenty-first-century U.S. South and historicizes the impact of "new" media on a region that has long been mediated. Eleven essays examine media moments ranging from the nineteenth century to the present day, among them Frederick Douglass's utilization of early photography, video game representations of a late capitalist landscape, rural queer communities' engagement with social media platforms, and contemporary technologies focused on revitalizing Indigenous cultural practices. Interdisciplinary in scope and execution, Remediating Region argues that on an increasingly networked planet, concerns over the mediated region continue to inform how audiences and participants understand their entrée into a global world through local space"--

    Kurzfassung: "Neel Ahuja traces the development of "climate migrant" discourses in public media and policy over the past decade, arguing that journalists, security experts, politicians, and NGOs have often oversimplified climate change and obfuscated the complex processes that have led to mass and supposedly environmental-change driven migration. To understand the systemic reasons for mass migration, Ahuja argues, it is necessary to reframe climate disaster as interlinked with the history of capitalism and the global politics of race, wherein climate change exacerbates existing issues such as land displacement, labor exploitation, debt finance, and pollution"

Setting propaganda under the framework of modernity, the book explains how different groups have legitimatized propaganda since the 20th century. From a reasonable and neutral standpoint, the author describes the confrontation among various propaganda concepts and discourses, displaying a panorama of the mutual conflicts between nation and individuals, control and freedom, ideas and bodies.     Kurzfassung: "Postfeminism in Context argues that 'postfeminism', as a critical term, has been too often deployed in ways which fail to account for historical and cultural specificity. Through an analysis across Australian popular culture across three decades - chick lit novels; 'dramedy' television shows; women's magazines; YouTube vlogs; self-help manuals; and newspapers - we find, not the simple disavowal of feminism commonly seen to constitute postfeminist media culture, but a much more complicated, and in many ways more hopeful, picture. Rather than seeing popular culture's attempts to make sense of feminism as inevitably limited or politically reactionary, as is common, our analysis foregrounds the tensions, contradictions and ambiguities that have always been constitutive of postfeminism. Building upon recent scholarship which questions the critical efficacy of postfeminism, we argue that in Australian media, rather than being seen as a thinly veiled form of antifeminism, postfeminism is best conceptualised as a form of popular feminism - marked by both constraints and possibilities. Inevitably, given its transnational nature, we do find some of the core postfeminist tropes, themes, and narratives circulating in Australian popular culture, but that is not all we find. Ultimately, we conclude that Australian postfeminism represents a transitional stage between second wave feminism and the full emergence of a new, as yet unnamed form of feminist politics, which can operate within (and possibly resist) consumer capitalism and neoliberalism. Providing a nuanced account of the varied ways in which feminism has been taken up in Australian media, Postfeminism in Context is essential reading for those interested gender, feminism, and the politics of representation"--

    Kurzfassung: "VIRTUAL PEDOPHILIA examines the cultural construction of the pedophile in relation to the rise of the carceral state and neoliberal tactics of forensic securitization. The pedophile, according to Gillian Harkins, is everywhere and nowhere: he eludes diagnostic and forensic profiling by slipping into the veneer of everyday normality. But it wasn't always this way; in this book, Harkins investigates the changing discourses of pedophilia over the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries to ask why and how the pedophile shifted from a social outcast to the image of white male normality, and why the latter image of the pedophile became a cultural fixation. According to Harkins, this shift was also accompanied by new security regimes: now that the pedophile could no longer be easily detected, the point was to detect potential crime through constant vigilance. Drawing on film, television, and popular culture, Harkins explores how the everyday American was inscripted to "hunt" white male pedophiles, arguing that these cultural texts implied the state and science were no longer sufficient to find the pedophile, thereby creating a biopolitics in which everyone must be on the lookout. Drawing on a Deleuzian interpretation of virtuality as potentiality, as well as the contemporary understanding of virtuality as a condition of technologically produced reality, Harkins positions the pedophile as a virtual construction: an always possible potential whose actuality needs to be determined using modern technologies and security apparatuses. In chapters 1 and 2, Harkins outlines a genealogy of the pedophile from Krafft-Ebings's naming of "paedophilia erotica" in 1886 to today's construction of the virtual pedophile. Chapter 3 focuses on the cultural production of the pedophile by examining the television series Law and Order: Special Victims Unit and To Catch a Predator, and how these shows trained audiences to "detect" pedophiles. Chapter 4 examines the pedophile in documentary and narrative film. In the final chapters, Harkins turns towards queer encounters with the security regimes around pedophilia and sex offenders, and considers what's at stake in the calls to dismantle or reduce sex offender management. This book will be of interest to students of gender and sexuality studies, neoliberalism, carceral studies and the security state, cultural studies, and social theory"--

    Kurzfassung: "In modern times, death is understood to have undergone a transformation not unlike religion. Whereas in the past it was out in the open, it now resides mostly in specialized spaces of sequestration - funeral homes, hospitals, and other medical facilities. A mainstay in so-called traditional societies in the form of ritual practices, death was usually messy but meaningful, with the questions of what happens to the dead or where they go lying at the heart of traditional culture and religion. In modernity, however, we are said to have effectively sanitized it, embalmed it and packaged it - but it seems that death is back. In the current era marked by economic, political and social uncertainty, we see it on television, on the Internet; we see it almost everywhere. (Inter)Facing Death analyzes the nexus of death and digital culture in the contemporary moment in the context of recent developments in social, cultural and political theory. It argues that death today can be thought of as "interfaced," that is mediated and expressed, in various aspects of contemporary life rather than put to the side or overcome as many narratives of modernity have suggested. Employing concepts from anthropology, sociology, media studies and communications, (Inter)Facing Death examines diverse phenomena where death and digital culture meet, including art, online suicide pacts, the mourning of celebrity deaths, terrorist beheadings and selfies.
