Abstract: This Open Access book examines the link between intercultural competence (IC) and pragmatics by asking frontline modern foreign language teachers in higher education teaching a variety of languages (e.g., Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Swedish) how they conceptualise intercultural competence and which skills, competences and knowledge they consider important in their teaching contexts. The data were collected with an online survey that focused on the relationship between intercultural competence and pragmatics. While international organizations such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or the Council of Europe (CoE) agree that intercultural competence should play an important role in education, it is not always clear what IC may encompass in specific teaching contexts and subject areas. Examining how modern foreign language teachers in higher education conceptualise intercultural competence and the value they attach as well as the attention they give to various areas of pragmatics in their teaching is highly important, since those language professionals may be the final teachers learners encounter during their formal foreign language education. They are therefore in a unique position to shape modern foreign language learners’ intercultural and pragmatic awareness, competence and skills. This book will be of interest to language professionals, modern foreign language teachers and teacher trainers, as well as students and scholars of applied linguistics, pragmatics, and language education. Gila A. Schauer is Professor of English and Applied Linguistics at the University of Erfurt, Germany. She has been researching aspects of intercultural and pragmatic competence for more than 20 years, beginning with her MA and PhD dissertations on cross-cultural and interlanguage pragmatics, then exploring cross-cultural (im)politeness perceptions, young learners and L2 pragmatics, as well as foreign language teachers' views and conceptualisations of intercultural competence. She was Director of the EAP/Study Skills Programme at Lancaster University from 2005 to 2010 and Director of the Language Centre at the University of Erfurt from 2012 to 2014. .

Abstract: While significant attention has been devoted to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 13 (SDG 13) and scaling up climate finance for developing countries, the adverse impacts of funded projects on local communities remains inadequately explored by both academics and policymakers. Mobilizing climate finance on an unprecedented scale is undeniably vital for the success of developing countries’ climate policies. However, these initiatives often give rise to adverse consequences for individuals in these countries, leading to displacements, exacerbating food insecurity, or even triggering conflicts over resources. This book examines the extent to which the climate funds established for achieving SDG 13 are adequate for addressing climate change impacts in developing countries. Yet, its analysis transcends the mere evaluation of the sufficiency or efficacy of these efforts found in much of the existing literature. Beyond the scope of quantifiable success, the book delves into the root causes of the adverse impacts that these funds can have on local communities and offers tailored recommendations to realize the noble aspirations of SDG 13, all without implying that the individuals who should benefit from climate finance are the ones who pay in the end. Gonzalo Larrea teaches public international and European law at Pompeu Fabra University. He has a doctorate in Laws from the European University Institute, and has worked as a legal researcher on transnational public law at King’s College London and the University of Barcelona, where he has also taught international environmental law. His fields of expertise include climate change law and governance, European environmental law and regulation, and international environmental law. Additionally, he is an attorney at law specialized in environment, energy and public law. He works at Cuatrecasas giving legal advice to private and public entities on all aspects of climate change regulation, environmental disputes and litigation

Abstract: The Modern Feminine in the Medusa Satire of Fanny Fern argues that Sara Parton and her literary alter ego, Fanny Fern, occupy a star-power position within the antebellum literary marketplace dominated by women authors of sentimental fiction, writers Nathaniel Hawthorne (in)famously called “the damn mob of scribbling women.” The Fanny Fern persona represents a nineteenth-century woman voicing the modern feminine within a laughter-provoking bourgeois carnival, a forerunner of Hélène Cixous’s laughing Medusa figure and her theory about écriture féminine. By advancing an innovative theory about an Anglo-American aesthetic, comic belles lettres, Caron explains the comic nuances of Parton’s persona, capable of both an amiable and a caustic satire. The book traces Parton’s burgeoning celebrity, analyzes her satires on cultural expectations of gendered behavior, and provides a close look at her variegated comic style. The book then makes two first-order conclusions: Parton not only offers a unique profile for antebellum women comic writers, but her Fanny Fern persona also anchors a potential genealogy of women comic writers and activists, down to the present day, who could fit Kate Clinton’s concept of fumerism, a feminist style of humor that fumes, that embraces the comic power of a Medusa satire.

Abstract: This handbook offers analysis of diverse genres and media of neo-Victorianism, including film and television adaptations of Victorian texts, authors’ life stories, graphic novels, and contemporary fiction set in the nineteenth century. Contextualized by Sarah E Maier and Brenda Ayres in a comprehensive introduction, the collection describes current trends in neo-Victorian scholarship of novels, film, theatre, crime, empire/postcolonialism, Gothic, materiality, religion and science, amongst others. A variety of scholars from around the world contribute to this volume by applying an assortment of theoretical approaches and interdisciplinary focus in their critique of a wide range of narratives—from early neo-Victorian texts such as A. S. Byatt’s Possession (1963) and Jean Rhys’ Wide Sargasso Sea (1966) to recent steampunk, from musical theatre to slumming, and from The Alienist to queerness—in their investigation of how this fiction reconstructs the past, informed by and reinforming the present. Sarah E. Maier is Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of New Brunswick Saint John, Canada. Brenda Ayres teaches online courses for Liberty University and Southern New Hampshire University, USA. Maier and Ayres have coedited several collections of essays. The most recent are Neo-Victorian Things (2022), Neo-Disneyism (2022), The Routledge Handbook of Victorian Scandals in Literature and Culture (2022), The Theological Dickens (2022), A Vindication of the Redhead (2021), Neo-Victorian Madness (2020) Neo-Gothic Narratives: (2020), Animals and Their Children in Victorian Culture (2019), and Reinventing Marie Corelli (2019). .

Abstract: This open access book explores the deep connections between environment, language, and cultural integrity, with a focus on Indigenous peoples from early modern times to the present. It illustrates the close integration of nature and culture through historical processes of environmental change in North, Central, and South America and the nurturing of local knowledge through ancestral languages and oral traditions. This volume fills a unique space by bringing together the issues of environment, language and cultural integrity in Latin American historical and cultural spheres. It explores the reciprocal and necessary relations between language/culture and environment; how they can lead to sustainable practices; how environmental knowledge and sustainable practices toward the environment are reflected in local languages, local sources and local socio-cultural practices. The book combines interdisciplinary methods and initiates a dialogue among scientifically trained scholars and local communities to compare their perspectives on well-being in remote and recent historical periods and it will be of interest to students and scholars in fields including sociolinguistics, (ethno)history, linguistic anthropology, cultural studies and cultural anthropology, environmental studies and Indigenous/minority studies. Justyna Olko is Professor in the Faculty of “Artes Liberales” at the University of Warsaw, Poland and director of its Center for Research and Practice in Cultural Continuity. She specializes in Indigenous history, sociolinguistics, contact linguistics, language endangerment and revitalization of ethnic minority and Indigenous languages, multilingualism as well as decolonizing research practices. Cynthia Radding is Gussenhoven Distinguished Professor of History and Latin American Studies at The University of North Carolina, USA. She researches the imperial borderlands of the Ibero-American empires, emphasizing the role of indigenous peoples and other colonized groups in shaping those borderlands, transforming their landscapes, and producing colonial societies.

Abstract: This book explores key issues in relation to parole and public opinion, including the relevance of public opinion to parole boards decision-making and strategies for increasing public confidence in parole. It presents the findings of semi-structured interviews with 80 members of parole authorities in 12 jurisdictions, across Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Scotland. Unlike judicial processes, which are open to the public, there is little awareness of and research on the work of parole authorities. This book therefore shines a light on a little-understood, but hotly-contested, aspect of the criminal justice system. Specifically, it explores differences across the study jurisdictions and considers how parole authorities in the four study countries view public attitudes, as well as the role of the media in shaping public attitudes towards parole. The book also considers whether public reaction matters for parole board decision-making and the interplay between informing the public and offender reintegration. It explores a range of strategies which may improve public confidence in parole and therefore the criminal justice system more broadly. This includes consideration of the value, definition and possibility of public confidence. The authors then discuss both passive forms, such as parole authority websites, publication of decisions and social media, before examining active forms of engagement, including an information/liaison officer, roadshows and community fora. Robin Fitzgerald is Associate Professor at The University of Queensland, Australia. She is the Bachelor of Arts Criminology Major Convenor at the School of Social Science. Shannon Dodd (née Buglar) is a lecturer in criminology at the Thomas More Law School, Australian Catholic University. Lorana Bartels is Professor of Criminology at the Australian National University (ANU) and Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Canberra (UC) and University of Tasmania, Australia. She was previously the Criminology Program Leader at ANU and the Head of the School of Law and Justice at UC. She is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law. Arie Freiberg AM is Emeritus Professor at Monash University, Australia. He was Dean of the Faculty Law at Monash University between 2004 and 2012 and previously Chair of the Victorian and Tasmanian Sentencing Advisory Councils. He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law and Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia.

Abstract: Altman has assembled an estimable group of scholars who provide fresh perspectives on traditional topics in the theory of legal punishment and intriguing discussions of issues that stretch the boundaries of penal theory. The contributions to the volume are of uniformly high quality, and scholars and students interested in these topics will benefit from reading and engaging with them. Richard L. Lippke, Professor Emeritus, Department of Criminal Justice, Indiana University-Bloomington, USA This is a serious survey of philosophical positions on the justification and politics of punishment, skeptical engagements with the legitimacy of criminal punishment, and explorations of possibilities for alternatives to punitiveness. International leaders in the field are well represented here. This book comes at an opportune moment for thinking critically about these important subjects. It will be a valuable resource for scholars interested in criminal law and the search for justice. Erin I. Kelly, Pulitzer Prize-winning author and Professor of Philosophy, Tufts University, USA This Handbook provides a comprehensive survey of major topics in the philosophy of punishment from many of the field’s leading scholars. Key features Presents a history of punishment theory from ancient times to the present. Evaluates the main proposed justifications of punishment, including retributivism, general and specific deterrence theories, mixed theories, expressivism, societal-defense theory, fair play theory, rights forfeiture theory, and the public health-quarantine model. Discusses sentencing, proportionality, policing, prosecution, and the role punishment plays in the context of the state. Examines advances in neuroscience and debates about whether free will skepticism undermines the justifiability of punishment. Considers forgiveness, restorative justice, and calls to abolish punishment. Addresses pressing social issues such as mass incarceration, juvenile justice, punitive torture, the death penalty, and “cruel and unusual” punishment. · With its unmatched breadth and depth, this book is essential reading for scholars who want to keep abreast of the field and for advanced students wishing to explore the frontiers of the subject. Matthew C. Altman is Professor of Philosophy at Central Washington University, USA. His most recent monograph is A Theory of Legal Punishment: Deterrence, Retribution, and the Aims of the State (2021). He is also series editor of Palgrave Handbooks in the Philosophy of Law.

Abstract: This open access book focuses on the textual features, or ‘strategies’, which form popularization discourse. In popularization discourse, research findings from academia are re-presented to make them noteworthy to society and influential for everyday life. Popularization involves recontextualization, or reimagination of findings in an everyday and newsworthy context, and reformulation, the use of audience-appropriate language to increase text comprehension and engagement. ‘Re-presenting research’ presents an empirically grounded, analytic framework for the analysis of popularization texts. Its applicability spans across disciplinary, multidisciplinary, and interdisciplinary fields, and overarches science communication, science journalism, and research communication. The book offers theoretical background information on popularization discourse, empirical underpinning of the construction of the framework, and practical applicability in examples from multiple text types and academic fields. This book acts as a guide for those working with or on popularization discourse – whether it is to analyze it or learn about it. Florentine M. Sterk is Junior Assistant Professor at Liberal Arts and Sciences, Utrecht University, The Netherlands. She researches how popularization writing skills can be taught in interdisciplinary university programs, to enable students to effectively communicate outside of their academic field. She teaches academic skills, writing skills, and interdisciplinary research methodology. Merel M. van Goch is Assistant Professor at Liberal Arts and Sciences, Utrecht University, The Netherlands. She is interested in how and what students and scholars learn, especially in interdisciplinary contexts. She studies metacognition, creativity, and competences relevant to higher education. Her teaching aims to foster students’ self-directed learning.

Forms of fintech – a market observation -- 6. What’s new about fintech (and what isn’t)? -- 7. Digital Disruption – structural shifts under fintech -- 8. The information problem under fintech -- 9. Conceptualizing a regulatory response to fintech -- 10. Analysing the current menu of fintech regulation.
Abstract: This book explores the impact of 'Fintech' on the information asymmetry between the financial regulator and the markets. It details the growing regulatory mismatch and how Fintech exacerbates the “pacing problem”, where the regulator struggles to keep up with innovation. With information as a point of reference, the book adds a new perspective on the latest phenomenon in financial innovation and presents a novel framework for navigating structural changes in the financial sector. Based on this analysis, a number of proposals to reduce the information gap and avoid regulatory mismatch are discussed. Thereby, new and promising regulatory concepts, such as regulatory sandboxes and SupTech applications are also covered. This book provides a practical framework for regulatory responses to financial innovation. It will be relevant to researchers and practitioners interested in financial technology and regulation. Christopher Ruof is a former Research Associate at the Institute of Law & Economics in Hamburg and is currently a legal trainee at the Financial Services Regulatory team at Allen & Overy in Frankfurt and London. He is also a member of the Young Researchers Group of the European Banking Institute. .

Abstract: This book examines anti-corruption policies in Latin America and the Caribbean. It compares best practices in public procurement and state budget in order to provide new insights on policy design for governments, civil society organisations and international organisations engaged in the fight against corruption. The book assesses how a paradigm shift toward transparency in global governance has led to major changes in public policies in the region since the late 1990s. Using Uruguay and Chile as case studies, it then demonstrates the causal mechanism linking transparency institutionalisation to corruption control. The book also offers recommendations for research and practice about the importance of coherent public accountability systems, that combine citizen oversight over government with government responsibility towards non-state actors. It will appeal to scholars and students of public policy, public administration and governance In Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as those interested in political corruption. Abstract: This book is a journey through leading and incredibly diverse emerging markets in a world of shocks and transitions. Tracing the rise of China, the emergence of India, the changing fortunes in Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico, the unique developments in Turkey and Indonesia, the complex geopolitics in Russia and Saudi Arabia, and the challenging post-apartheid transition in South Africa, the study examines their varying prospects in the years to come. Using an innovative analytical approach and rich empirics, the book delves into topics ranging from macroeconomics to human development, institutions to climate change. It provides a strategic roadmap of reform for these economies to escape the middle-income trap. It argues that in a world where advanced economies are defined by slowdown, growing trade blocs, changing demographics, and the rise of renewable technologies, emerging markets will continue to play a significant but complex role in the twenty-first century. Ali Zafar is a macroeconomist with more than 20 years experience advising governments in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East. He is the author of The CFA Franc Zone: Economic Development and the Post-Covid Recovery (2021). He is head of the UNDP Development Policy Research Hub and Economic Advisor in Ethiopia

Abstract: Climate change is as much a cultural phenomenon as it is a natural one. This book is about those cultural patterns that surround our perception of the environmental crisis and which are embodied in the narratives told by climate change advocates. It investigates the themes and motifs in those narratives through the use of narrative theory and provides a framework for narrative analysis from a cultural perspective. Developing a framework for cultural narrative analysis, Climate Change and Storytelling draws on qualitative interviews with stakeholders, activists and politicians in the USA and Germany to identify motifs and the relationships between heroes, villains and victims, as told by the messengers of the narrative. This book will provide academics and practitioners with insights into the structure of climate change communication among climate advocates and the cultural fabric that informs it.

Abstract: “Radics and Ciocchini have deftly curated the contributions of new and established scholars in a work that amply illustrates why scholarship from the Global South matters in building knowledge and shaping theory.” —Dee Smythe, Professor and Director of the Centre for Law and Society at the University of Cape Town, South Africa “The editors and authors not only show us how violence manifests in the Global South but also what we can learn from the diverse ways in which these populations respond to oppressive conditions and engage with the law.” —Lynette J. Chua, Associate Professor of Law at the National University of Singapore and President of the Asian Law & Society Association “Criminal Legalities’ originality lies in the Southern perspective it adopts to document the specific forms that law and the criminal justice system take when they target disadvantaged groups in nations that are politically and culturally marginalized themselves.” —Roberto Gargarella, Professor at the Universidad de Buenos Aires and Senior Researcher at National Research Center, Argentina This book explores how the law and the institutions of the criminal justice system expose minorities to different types of violence, either directly, through discrimination and harassment, or indirectly, by creating the conditions that make them vulnerable to violence from other groups of society. It draws on empirical insights across a broad array of communities and locales of the Global South. The book examines the challenges of protecting those at the margins of power, especially those whom the law is often used to oppress. George B. Radics is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and holds a joint appointment with NUS College. Pablo Ciocchini is Honorary Research Fellow in the Department of Sociology, Social Policy and Criminology at the University of Liverpool, UK, and Research Associate in the Institute for Legal Culture of the National University of La Plata, Argentina.

Abstract: This book investigates how work ethics in Europe were conceptualised from the Middle Ages to the nineteenth century. Through analysis of a range of discourses, it focuses on the roles played by intellectuals in formulating, communicating, and contesting ideas about work and its ethical value. The book moves away from the idea of a singular Weberian work ethic as fundamental to modern notions of work and instead emphasises how different languages of work were harnessed for a variety of social, intellectual, religious, economic, political, and ideological objectives. Rather than a singular work ethic that left a decisive mark on the development of Western culture and economy, the volume stresses plurality. The essays draw on approaches from intellectual, social, and cultural history. They explore how, why, and in what contexts labour became an important and openly promoted value; who promoted or opposed hard work and for what reasons; and whether there was an early modern break with ancient and medieval discourses on work. These historicized visions of work ethics help enrich our understanding of present-day changing attitudes to work

Abstract: This open access book explores the ambiguity of East Central Europe during the twentieth century, examining local contexts through a comparative and transnational reworking of theoretical models in postcolonial studies. Since the early modern period, East Central Europe has arguably been an object of imperialism. However, at the same time East Central European states have been seen to be colonial actors, with individuals from the region often associating themselves with colonial discourses in extra-European contexts. Spanning a broad time period until after the Second World War and covering the governance of Communism and its legacies, the book examines how cultural and literary narratives from East Central Europe have created and revised historical knowledge, making use of collective memory to feed into identity models.

Abstract: This open access book brings together leading international violence researchers to examine the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on experiences of, and responses to, domestic and family violence. Drawing on empirical work situated within an international context, this book presents evidence alongside country specific case studies to provide a global exploration of how women’s insecurity increased during this global health crisis at the same as their access to support services reduced. In addition, the differential impacts of the pandemic in relation to the experiences of priority cohorts, including violence experienced by children and temporary migrant women is also explored. The key focus is on the nature, extent, and responses to the COVID-19 pandemic on service delivery, accessibility of support, and access to justice for women experiencing domestic and family violence. Abstract: This book explores Della Cruscan poetry in the late eighteenth-century literary scene. A sociable, ornate, and deeply theatrical type of poetry, Della Cruscanism was associated with writers like Robert Merry, Mary Robinson, and Hannah Cowley. While Merry is the poet most commonly associated with the Della Cruscan school, this book argues that Della Cruscanism was a movement dominated by female poets and that this was one of the key reasons for the later disavowal and downgrading of its poetic accomplishments. It offers a close examination of these women writers and their role in shaping the poetic culture of the fashionable newspaper. In doing so, this study offers the first account of the feminization of the fashionable newspaper and of popular literary culture in the final years of the eighteenth century. Claire Knowles is Senior Lecturer in English at La Trobe University, Australia. She is author of Sensibility and Female Poetic Tradition, 1780-1860: The Legacy of Charlotte Smith (2009) and edited Charlotte Smith: The Major Poems with Ingrid Horrocks. Abstract: “In this book, editors Ganser and Lavery and an impressive roster of contributors bring bracing critical insight to the study of oceanic forms of capacious movement and brutal constraint. Attentive to the decolonial, ecological, aesthetic, and socio-political dimensions of both blue humanities and mobility studies, this volume brings particular urgency and freshness to terraqueous cultural study.” —Hester Blum, Penn State University, USA “By emphasizing the reciprocal nature of the relationship between mobility and the ‘deep blue,’ this collection does much more than show how the often-Eurocentric rhetoric of transoceanic exchange was mobilized as a metaphorical or material resource. Rather, it also demonstrates the crucial intersectionality of multiple discourses around race, gender, nationality, coloniality, economy, markets, accessibility, pollution, and extraction, while simultaneously opening up and exploring intellectually rich avenues of inquiry.” — Jens Klenner, Assistant Professor, Bowdoin College, USA This open access edited collection explores various aspects of how oceanic im/ mobilities have been framed and articulated in the literary and cultural imagination. It covers the entanglements of maritime mobility and immobility as they are articulated and problematized in selected literature and cultural forms from the early modern period to the present. In particular, it brings cultural mobility studies into conversation with the maritime and oceanic humanities. The contributors examine the interface between the traditional Eurocentric imagination of the sea as romantic and metaphorical, and the materiality of the sea as a deathbed for racialized and illegalized humans as well as non-human populations. Alexandra Ganser is Professor of North American Studies at the University of Vienna, Austria, where she also heads the interdisciplinary Research Platform “Mobile Cultures and Societies.” Charne Lavery is Lecturer in the Department of English at the University of Pretoria and Research Fellow on the Oceanic Humanities for the Global South project based at WISER, University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa.

Abstract: This book discusses the transformation of the banking industry, particularly after a number of recent shocks: 2008 financial crisis, 2012 Euro-sovereign crisis, the pandemic COVID-19 crisis, the technological revolution, and reputational problems in banking due to climate risk and ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) metrics. The book emphasizes two post-pandemic issues: the role of financial education and inclusive finance, and responsible banking and ESG priorities. Individual chapters analyse how the pandemic shed new light on social and governance responsibilities: Major issues include the importance and efficiency of financial education, and the impact of ESG programs on firms’ value, banks’ probability of default, bank business models and reputation risk. The book also addresses investors’ behaviour and the factors which may bias financial disclosure and reporting. By addressing whether the post-2008 crisis bank restructuring has effectively created a resilient and sustainable banking system – mostly from the European market’s perspective – the book will be of interest to researchers, academics, policy makers, and professionals of banking and financial institutions. Abstract: This open access book offers an entangled history of hygiene by showing how knowledge of purity, health and cleanliness was shaped by evangelical medical missionaries and their encounters with people in West Africa. By tracing the interactions and negotiations of six Basel Mission doctors, who practised on the Gold Coast and in Cameroon from 1885 to 1914, the author demonstrates how notions of religious purity, scientific health and colonial cleanliness came together in the making of hygiene during the age of High Imperialism. The heyday of evangelical medical missions abroad coincided with the emergence of tropical medicine as a scientific discipline during what became known as the Scramble for Africa. This book reveals that these projects were intertwined and that hygiene played an important role in all three of them. While most historians have examined modern hygiene as a European, bourgeois and scientific phenomenon, the author highlights both the colonial and the religious fabric of hygiene, which continues to shape our understanding of purity, health and cleanliness to this day.
