    Kurzfassung: "A desire for intimacy in domestic spaces - motivated by a growing sense of individualistic expression, an incentive to conceal the labor or enslavement taking place, and an appetite for solace and comfort - led to interiors taking on more specific roles in the eighteenth century. By examining the architectural, visual, and material culture of eighteenth-century spaces, Intimate Interiors foregrounds the interrelated concepts of intimacy, privacy, informality, and sociability in order to show how these ideas played an increasingly integral role in the period's architectural and material design. Across eleven innovative chapters that explore issues of gender, politics, travel, exoticism, imperialism, sensorial experiences, identity, interiority, and modernity, this volume demonstrates how intimacy was a fundamental goal in the planning of private quarters. In doing so, the political nature of private spaces is uncovered, whilst highlighting the contradictions and complexities of these highly performative "private" interiors.     Kurzfassung: Erstmals werden in Berlin hochrangige Kunstwerke der vorislamischen Epochen aus Museen und Instituten Usbekistans präsentiert. Sie führen in eine weitgehend unbekannte Welt. Seitdem Alexander der Große im 4. Jahrhundert v. Chr. auf seinem beispiellosen Kriegszug auch in die zentralasiatischen Gebiete vordrang, gelangten hellenistische Einflüsse in diese Region. Mit der Einwanderung nomadischer Reiterstämme aus China entwickelte sich eine Bau- und Kunstsprache, die östliche und westliche Elemente in besonderer Art und Weise verband. Diese Verbindung künstlerischer Traditionen des Hellenismus mit Einflüssen aus Indien und den Traditionen der Steppenvölker erlebte im Reich der Kuschan vom 1. bis ins 3. Jahrhundert n. Chr. ihre Blütezeit. So entstand in den Palästen, den großen Städten und den buddhistischen Klöstern eine einzigartige Bilderwelt. Unter den Lehmhügeln der verfallenen Gebäude überdauerten deren Zeugnisse bis zu ihrer Wiederentdeckung die Stürme der Zeit. In diesem Katalog werden die aktuellen Ergebnisse der usbekischen und internationalen Forschung umfassend vorgestellt

    Kurzfassung: Since its beginnings in Paris in the mid-19th century, the idea of bohemia, an urban community of artists and intellectuals living outside bourgeois norms, has been a potent trope of artistic identity. It was here that the notion of an unconventional, free-spirited life, precarious yet filled with idealism, was codified and romanticized. Bohemia: History of an Idea, 1950 – 2000 shows the continuities and differences between the scenes and subcultures of the second half of the twentieth century, when the mainstream began to appropriate and thereby erode a way of life predicated on its rejection. Nonetheless, as an alternative to conformity the bohemian idea has exerted an enduring fascination. Through works by 39 artists, including Alice Neel, PeterHujar, John Deakin, David Wojnarowicz, Ed van der Elsken, Robert Frank and Alfred Leslie, William Gedney, Libuše Jarcovjáková, Nan Goldin, Zhang Huan and Wolfgang Tillmans, the publication explores the diversity of expressions in various cities in Europe, North America and Asia and shows that the bohemian idea continues to galvanize and inspire

Emphasizing broader issues informed by the uniqueness of Black experience rather than individual artists' works, Mary Ann Calo makes the case that the revolutionary vision of these federal art projects is best understood in the context of access to opportunity, mediated by the reality of racial segregation.Focusing primarily on the Federal Art Project (FAP) of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), Calo documents African American artists' participation in community art centers in Harlem, in St. Louis, and throughout the South. She examines the internal workings of the Harlem Artists' Guild, the Guild's activities during the 1930s, and its alliances with other groups, such as the Artists' Union and the National Negro Congress. Calo also explores African American artists' representation in the exhibitions sponsored by WPA administrators and the critical reception of their work. In doing so, she elucidates the evolving meanings of the terms race, culture, and community in the interwar era. The book concludes with an essay by Jacqueline Francis on Black artists in the early 1940s, after the end of the FAP program.Presenting essential new archival information and important insights into the experiences of Black New Deal artists, this study expands the factual record and positions the cumulative evidence within the landscape of critical race studies.     Kurzfassung: La coiffure et les poils humains, au même titre que les vêtements, les bijoux et les accessoires, participent depuis des siècles à la construction des apparences. À la frontière entre la mode et la représentation du corps, le sujet ne laisse personne indifférent. Dans la culture occidentale, le cheveu hirsute autant que l'excès de poils ont souvent été associés au diable, à l'animal et à l'homme sauvage. Si bien que pendant des siècles la femme et l'homme civilisés ont dû peigner, dompter et parfois même dissimuler leur toison. Parce que le poil est un matériau corporel qui peut être transformé de mille et une manières - étiré, coupé, complété, coloré, orné, caché ou exhibé -, il est un élément essentiel de la mise en scène de soi qui permet d'afficher l'adhésion à une mode, une conviction, une contestation et est porteur de nombreuses significations, telles la féminité, la virilité, la négligence, etc. Quelques noms de coiffures célèbres - à la Fontanges, à la Titus, à la garçonne, à l'iroquoise, etc. - révèlent que les cheveux sont eux aussi l'objet de véritables phénomènes de mode, porteurs de codes sociaux et culturels que les contemporains de chaque époque savent décrypter. De la fin du Moyen Âge à nos jours, ce livre aborde plusieurs thèmes inhérents à l'histoire de la coiffure (cheveux peignés, coupés, ornés ; perruques, postiches, calvitie ; coloration), sans oublier les questions liées à la pilosité faciale (visages imberbes, barbes, moustaches, sourcils) et à la pilosité corporelle (torse, jambes, pubis, aisselles, épilation). L'utilisation de cheveux pour réaliser des bijoux, la gloire des coiffeurs superstars ou encore l'emploi des cheveux dans la haute couture sont d'autres thèmes qui offriront au lecteur de nombreuses surprises

    Kurzfassung: La mostra "Gli ebrei, i Medici e il Ghetto di Firenze" ha un doppio valore, storico e culturale. I secoli di vita del ghetto rappresentano il capitolo centrale della storia della presenza ebraica a Firenze, caratterizzato da norme di segregazione ed al contempo simbolo di una forma di "inclusione" ufficiale nel tessuto civico di Firenze: il ghetto si trovava di fronte al Mercato Vecchio (oggi piazza della Repubblica), allora cuore pulsante del commercio cittadino. Il ghetto fu uno strumento di oppressione ma anche, paradossalmente un luogo ove si permise la vita e la crescita della comunità. Si tratta senz'altro di un periodo la cui conoscenza, nonostante la demolizione e la cancellazione della memoria fisica dei luoghi, è necessaria per comprendere dinamiche e caratteristiche del rapporto fra la minoranza ebraica e la città. Compongono il catalogo una corposa sezione di saggi, le schede delle cento opere in mostra e gli schemi e le planimetrie urbanistiche del ghetto di Firenze

    Kurzfassung: An den Kunsthochschulen der DDR studierten ausländische Künstlerinnen und Künstler aus den Sozialistischen Bruderländern wie Ägypten, Äthiopien, Israel oder Uruguay. Was wurde aus ihnen und warum tauchen sie in den Rückschauen zur DDR-Kunst nicht auf? Ihre Werke rücken nun ins Zentrum. Zugleich werden die Einwanderungsgeschichte und die Erinnerung an die Wiedervereinigung aus der Perspektive ostdeutscher Migrant*innen erzählt. Positionen junger Künstler*innen of Color der zweiten und dritten Generation mit biografischem Bezug zur DDR ergänzen die aktuelle Perspektive.

    Kurzfassung: One of the most iconic images of slavery is a schematic wood engraving depicting the human cargo hold of a slave ship. First published by British abolitionists in 1788, it exposed this widespread commercial practice for what it really was―shocking, immoral, barbaric, unimaginable. Printed as handbills and broadsides, the image Cheryl Finley has termed the "slave ship icon" was easily reproduced, and by the end of the eighteenth century it was circulating by the tens of thousands around the Atlantic rim. Committed to Memory provides the first in-depth look at how this artifact of the fight against slavery became an enduring symbol of Black resistance, identity, and remembrance. Finley traces how the slave ship icon became a powerful tool in the hands of British and American abolitionists, and how its radical potential was rediscovered in the twentieth century by Black artists, activists, writers, filmmakers, and curators. Finley offers provocative new insights into the works of Amiri Baraka, Romare Bearden, Betye Saar, and many others. She demonstrates how the icon was transformed into poetry, literature, visual art, sculpture, performance, and film―and became a medium through which diasporic Africans have reasserted their common identity and memorialized their ancestors. Beautifully illustrated, Committed to Memory features works from around the world, taking readers from the United States and England to West Africa and the Caribbean. It shows how contemporary Black artists and their allies have used this iconic eighteenth-century engraving to reflect on the trauma of slavery and come to terms with its legacy.

    Kurzfassung: "Skin Crafts discusses multiple artists from global contexts who employ craft materials in works that address historical and contemporary violence. These artists are deliberately embracing the fragility of textiles and ceramics to evoke the vulnerability of human skin and - in so doing - are demanding visceral responses from viewers. Drawing on a range of theories including affect theory, material feminism, skin studies, phenomenology and global art history, the book illuminates the various ways in which artists are harnessing the affective power of craft materials to address and cope with violence. Artists from Mexico, Africa, China, the Netherlands and Indigenous artists based in the unceded territory known as Canada are examined in relation to one another to illuminate the connections and differences across their bodies of work. Skin Crafts interrogates ongoing material violence towards women and marginalized others, and demonstrates the power of contemporary art to force viewers and scholars into facing their ethical responsibilities as human beings."--Publisher description

    Kurzfassung: "Organized around a single object—the marble bust Why Born Enslaved! by French sculptor Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux—Fictions of Emancipation: Carpeaux Recast is the first exhibition at The Met to examine Western sculpture in relation to the histories of transatlantic slavery, colonialism, and empire. Created in the wake of American emancipation and some twenty years after the abolition of slavery in the French Atlantic, Why Born Enslaved! was shaped by the enduring popularity of antislavery imagery, the development of nineteenth-century ethnographic theories of racial difference, and France’s colonialist fascination with Africa. The exhibition will explore the sculpture’s place within these contexts. Featuring more than thirty-five works of art in sections unfolding around Carpeaux’s sculpture, Fictions of Emancipation will offer an in-depth look at portrayals of Black enslavement, emancipation, and personhood with an aim toward challenging the notion that representation in the wake of abolition constitutes a clear moral or political stance. Important works by Josiah Wedgwood, Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, Charles Cordier, Edmonia Lewis, Louis-Simon Boizot, and others will show how Western artists of the nineteenth century engaged with the Black figure as a political symbol and site of exoticized beauty, while contemporary sculptures by Kara Walker and Kehinde Wiley will connect the dialogue around Carpeaux’s bust to current conversations about the legacies of slavery in the Western world.     Kurzfassung: January 1962 saw the launch of the very first collection by Yves Saint Laurent. To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of his couture house, the Musee Yves Saint Laurent Paris is organizing a unique retrospective of the couturier's work that juxtaposes his creations with art works from the collections of four major Paris institutions: the Musee d'Orsay, the Centre Pompidou, the Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and the Musee Picasso, as well as presenting a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the secrets of couture at the Musee Yves Saint Laurent.     Kurzfassung: Ausgangspunkt dieses Buches ist der Frühling einer subkulturellen Bewegung im Umfeld besetzter Häuser, selbstverwalteter Projekte und ungenutzter Brachen im Zentrum Berlins. Eine Unzahl von Kollektiven ergriff die Gelegenheit, sich diese Räume anzueignen und sie jenseits der Spielregeln der kapitalistischen Marktwirtschaft zu nutzen. Eine seit Jahrzehnten gewachsene Graffiti-Szene traf sich mit Künstler*innen und Aktivist*innen aus aller Welt, um neue ästhetische Ausdrucksformen zu erfinden und ein Recht auf Stadt für alle zu reklamieren. Es folgte eine kreative Explosion in den Straßen. Es war der euphorische Aufbruch einer Bewegung, die glaubte, die Trennung zwischen Kunst und Alltagsleben auflösen und den öffentlichen Raum zu einem Gesamtkunstwerk umgestalten zu können. - »BITTE LEBN« ist die einzigartige und aus einer aktivistischen Perspektive geschriebene Geschichte und fotografische Dokumentation dieser Bewegung, von urbaner Kunst und Subkultur in Berlin zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts. Das reich illustrierte Buch fragt aber auch nach den Grenzen künstlerischer Aktionsformen, die Gefahr laufen, selbst zur Marke und zum Standortfaktor im Wettbewerb der Metropolen zu werden.

    Kurzfassung: Black artists have been making major contributions to the global art scene since at least the middle of the twentieth century. While some of these artists - of African and Caribbean descent - have been embraced at times by the art world, they have mostly been neglected or have not received the recognition they deserve. Taking its starting point as the Windrush-era Caribbean Artists Movement, and considering and contextualising the political, cultural, and artistic climate from which it emerged, this concise introduction showcases the work of seventy Black-British artists from the 1930s until the present. Artworks in a range of media offer a lens through which to understand some of the events and issues confronted and explored, shedding light on the unique Black-British experience. Constructed around contemporary ideas on race, national identity, citizenship, gender, class, sexuality and aesthetics in Britain, this book interrogates themes at the heart of Black-British Art, revealing art in dialogue with a complex past and present. Featuring some of the most prominent and influential Black-British artists of recent decades, as well as less well-known artists, it also includes work from a new generation of artists at the forefront of contemporary art. At a time when visibility within the art world has taken on a renewed urgency, this is a timely and accessible introduction celebrating Black-British artists and their outstanding contribution to art history
