    Abstract: Das Fahrrad ist das langlebigste und weitest verbreite Fahrzeug der Welt, von dem in seiner zweihundertjährigen Geschichte mehr als eine Milliarde Exemplare gebaut wurden. Dennoch wurde seine Technikgeschichte bisher vernachlässigt, obwohl es mit seiner Idee des Leichtbaus anstelle der tonnenschweren Eisenbahn und der Abkehr vom Pferd neue Konstruktionen, Materialien und Fertigungstechniken ins Leben rief, welche die Basis für Motorrad-, Automobil- und Flugzeugbau bildeten. Erst seit dreißig Jahren haben eine internationale Konferenz und die mikrohistorische Feinarbeit der nationalen Vintage-Vereine quellenbasierte Erkenntnisse gesammelt, die einen neuen Blick auf die Fahrradgeschichte ermöglichen. Dieses Buch bietet erstmals eine länderübergreifende und umfassende Darstellung der technischen und historischen Entwicklung des Fahrrads von den frühesten Laufmaschinen als Reitpferdersatz bis hin zu modernen Rennrädern, Mountainbikes und Liegerädern. Es zeichnet die Entwicklung des Fahrrads auch anhand der einzelnen Komponenten wie Antrieben, Schaltungen, Federungen, Bremsen, Lichtanlagen, Speichenrädern und Luftreifen nach, die von Erfindern und Herstellern hinsichtlich Material, Ergonomie und Fahrphysik zuwege gebracht wurden. Mit vielen Original- und Patentgrafiken sowie dem ausgewählten Literaturverzeichnis stellt dieses Buch den Ausgangspunkt für alle künftigen Recherchen dar. Hans-Erhard Lessing wirkte an Museen in Mannheim und Karlsruhe als Hauptkonservator und ist apl. Professor der Universität Ulm. Er schrieb Biographien von Robert Bosch und Karl Drais sowie weitere technikhistorische Bücher. Tony Hadland wirkte jahrzehntelang als Baugutachter bei Barclays Bank. Er ist Autor der Firmengeschichten von Raleigh, Sturmey-Archer und Moulton, sowie weiterer technikhistorischer Bücher und hat einen eigenen Blog.

    Abstract: Schon vor 50 Jahren kämpfte Afrika um seine Kunst, die während der Kolonialzeit massenweise in europäische Museen gelangt war. Und es fand durchaus Unterstützung im Westen. Am Ende jedoch war der Kampf nicht nur vergebens, er wurde auch erfolgreich vergessen gemacht. Auf der Grundlage von unzähligen unbekannten Quellen aus Europa und Afrika erzählt Bénédicte Savoy die gespenstische Geschichte einer verpassten Chance, einer Niederlage, die heute mit umso größerer Wucht auf uns zurückschlägt. Afrikas Bemühungen um seine in der Kolonialzeit nach Europa verbrachte Kunst sind keineswegs neu. Schon bald nach 1960, als 18 ehemalige Kolonien die Unabhängigkeit erlangten, wurde von afrikanischen Intellektuellen, Politikern und Museumsleuten eine ungeheure Dynamik in Gang gesetzt. In ganz Europa suchten daraufhin Politikerinnen und Politiker, Journalisten, Akademiker und einige Museumsleute einen Weg, afrikanische Kulturgüter im Sinne einer postkolonialen und postrassistischen Solidarität zurückzugeben. Die Argumente aber, mit denen andere versuchten, die Forderungen aus Afrika zu entkräften und Lösungen zu verhindern, ähneln auf frappierende Weise denen von heute. Schließlich verlief alles im Sand. „Gebt koloniale Raubkunst zurück! Dafür engagiert sich Bénédicte Savoy. In ihrem Buch zeigt die Kunsthistorikerin nun, dass ihr Kampf ein alter ist. Schon in den 1960er-Jahren drängten die neu gegründeten Staaten Afrikas auf eine Rückführung – erfolglos.     Abstract: Die etwa 2.000 Klein- und Mittelstädte in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland sind ein wichtiger Bestandteil unseres Siedlungsnetzes. In ihnen lebt etwa die Hälfte der Einwohner des Landes. Zentrale Herausforderungen der Stadterneuerung in ihnen, wie der Strukturwandel in Handel und Gewerbe, der Verfall überkommener historischer Substanz, die Zunahme von Leerständen und Problemimmobilien und die allgemein sinkende Vitalität, werden häufig nicht aktiv genug bearbeitet. Vielerorts gibt es zwar sehr aktive Bürger*innen, die sich in Vereinen und informellen zivilgesellschaftlichen Netzwerken organisieren und intensiv in die Stadtentwicklung einbezogen werden wollen, doch Perspektivlosigkeit, Überalterung und Nachwuchsmangel und der Mangel an Ressourcen begrenzen oft ihre Möglichkeiten deutlich. Obwohl in den einzelnen Kommunen ein großer Wissens- und Erfahrungsschatz über neue Verfahren und Instrumente der Stadterneuerung vorhanden ist, sind gute Beispiele aus Klein- und Mittelstädten häufig wenig bekannt und wurden bisher nur in Ansätzen wissenschaftlich untersucht. Hier setzt der vorliegende Band mit seinem inhaltlichen Schwerpunkt auf der Situation der Stadterneuerung in Klein- und Mittelstädten an. Neben eher grundsätzlichen Beiträgen widmet er sich auch Erfahrungen aus der Praxis in ganz unterschiedlichen Förderkontexten. Die Herausgebenden Dr.-Ing. Uwe Altrock ist Professor für Stadterneuerung und Planungstheorie an der Universität Kassel. Dr.-Ing. Detlef Kurth ist Professor für Stadtplanung an der TU Kaiserslautern. Dr.-Ing. Ronald Kunze ist Fachautor für Städtebau, Stadtentwicklung, Stadterneuerung und Wohnungspolitik. Dr.-Ing. Holger Schmidt ist Professor für Stadtumbau und Ortserneuerung an der TU Kaiserslautern.     Abstract: Die Texte des Bandes befassen sich schwerpunktmäßig mit den Erfahrungen der Quartiersentwicklung im Globalen Süden und der Frage, wie es gelingen kann, selbst in Situationen geringster Ressourcenverfügbarkeit und größter Not menschenwürdige Lebensbedingungen auf der Quartiersebene zu verwirklichen. Von diesen Beispielen können wir für unsere eigenen Herausforderungen auf unterschiedlichste Weise profitieren: zum einen in methodischer Hinsicht, stellen sie doch höchste Anforderungen an die Mobilisierung von Selbsthilfekräften und die Beteiligung von Bewohnerinnen und Bewohnern, wenn sie überhaupt ernsthaft an einer schrittweisen Aufwertung interessiert sind; zum anderen hinsichtlich des Umgangs mit den Einflüssen des globalen und lokalen Immobilienkapitals, das auf eine maximale Verwertung insbesondere von günstig gelegenen Lagen mit Quartieren geringer Dichte und immobilienwirtschaftliche Erträge abzielt und dabei nicht selten die Lebensbedingungen der ärmsten Städter fundamental in Frage stellt. Die Zielgruppen Studierende und Dozierende der Stadtentwicklung und Stadtplanung sowie Praktikerinnen und Praktiker. Die Herausgeber Dr.-Ing.     Abstract: One may visit famous gardens in Tokyo, Kyoto, or Osaka--or one may visit Japanese-styled gardens in New York, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Berlin, London, Paris, São Paulo, or Singapore. We often view these gardens as representative of the essence of Japanese culture. Christian Tagsold argues, however, that the idea of the Japanese garden has less do to with Japan's history and traditions, and more to do with its interactions with the West. The first Japanese gardens in the West appeared at the world's fairs in Vienna in 1873 and Philadelphia in 1876 and others soon appeared in museums, garden expositions, the estates of the wealthy, and public parks. By the end of the nineteenth century, the Japanese garden, described as mystical and attuned to nature, had usurped the popularity of the Chinese garden, so prevalent in the eighteenth century. While Japan sponsored the creation of some gardens in a series of acts of cultural diplomacy, the Japanese style was interpreted and promulgated by Europeans and Americans as well. But the fashion for Japanese gardens would decline in inverse relation to the rise of Japanese militarism in the 1930s, their rehabilitation coming in the years following World War II, with the rise of the Zen meditation garden style that has come to dominate the Japanese garden in the West. Tagsold has visited over eighty gardens in ten countries with an eye to questioning how these places signify Japan in non-Japanese geographical and cultural contexts. He ponders their history, the reasons for their popularity, and their connections to geopolitical events, explores their shifting aesthetic, and analyzes those elements which convince visitors that these gardens are "authentic." He concludes that a constant process of cultural translation between Japanese and Western experts and commentators marked these spaces as expressions of otherness, creating an idea of the Orient and its distinction from the West.--Publisher website

    Abstract: Im Zentrum des Bandes steht der Diskurs über Gewalt und Gewaltverhältnisse in der Erziehungswissenschaft und die Feststellung, dass es sich hier um ein konstantes pädagogisches Problem handelt. Die erziehungswissenschaftlichen Diskussionen haben sich in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten immer wieder mit den unterschiedlichen Phänomenen und Strukturen von Gewalt auseinandergesetzt und dabei einerseits Differenzierungen zwischen körperlichen und nicht-körperlichen Gewaltformen herausgearbeitet, andererseits unterschiedlichste – teils auch konzeptionell widersprüchliche – Theorien und Modelle der Gewaltprävention entwickelt.     Abstract: This book seeks to communicate to both a global and local audience, the key attributes of pre-industrial African metallurgy such as technological variation across space and time, methods of mining and extractive metallurgy and the fabrication of metal objects. These processes were transformative in a physical and metaphoric sense, which made them total social facts. Because the production and use of metals was an accretion of various categories of practice, a chaine operatoire conceptual and theoretical framework that simultaneously considers the embedded technological and anthropological factors was used. The book focuses on Africa’s different regions as roughly defined by cultural geography. On the one hand there is North Africa, Egypt, the Egyptian Sudan, and the Horn of Africa which share cultural inheritances with the Middle East and on the other is Africa south of the Sahara and the Sudan which despite interacting with the former is remarkably different in terms of technological practice. For example, not only is the timing of metallurgy different but so is the infrastructure for working metals and the associated symbolic and sociological factors. The cultural valuation of metals and the social positions of metal workers were different too although there is evidence of some values transfer and multi-directional technological cross borrowing. The multitude of permutations associated with metals production and use amply demonstrates that metals participated in the production and reproduction of society. Despite huge temporal and spatial differences there are so many common factors between African metallurgy and that of other regions of the world. For example, the role of magic and ritual in metal working is almost universal be it in Bolivia, Nepal, Malawi, Timna, Togo or Zimbabwe. Similarly, techniques of mining were constrained by the underlying geology but this should not in any way suggest that Africa’s metallurgy was derivative or that the continent had no initiative. Rather it demonstrates that when confronted with similar challenges, humanity in different regions of the world responded to identical challenges in predictable ways mediated as mediated by the prevailing cultural context. The success of the use of historical and ethnographic data in understanding variation and improvisation in African metallurgical practices flags the potential utility of these sources in Asia, Latin America and Europe.     Abstract: Die Integration von Telekommunikation in Europa wurde bislang eher gegenwartsorientiert und nicht historisch betrachtet. Im Gegensatz dazu vergleicht Berenice Ahr internationale Standardisierungen bei grenzüberschreitenden Fernsprechverbindungen in den Jahrzehnten vor dem Ersten und nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. Anhand repräsentativer Fallbeispiele werden die Strukturen der internationalen Regime, die Willensbildungs- und Entscheidungsprozesse und ihre Akteure sowie die behandelten Standards untersucht. Es wird danach gefragt, wie sich Strukturen, Prozesse und Standards gegenseitig beeinflussten. Der intrasektorale Vergleich innerhalb der jeweiligen Epoche sowie zwischen beiden Epochen stellt die spezifischen Merkmale der Integration, die Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede sowie die fördernden und hemmenden Faktoren heraus.

    Abstract: Ethnologie und Psychologie entstanden um 1900 in Leipzig. Am Beispiel prägender Wissenschaftler wie Adolf Bastian, Wilhelm Wundt, Friedrich Ratzel, Karl Weule, Alfred Vierkandt, Richard Thurnwald und Willy Hellpach legt der Autor das Verhältnis beider Wissenschaften dar. Er erörtert, wie der Strukturgedanke von der Völkerpsychologie Wilhelm Wundts und der Ganzheitspsychologie Felix Kruegers Eingang in die Strukturlehre des Ethnologen Fritz Krause fand und zeigt, wie dieser Einfluss auf die Ethnologie und Psychologie in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts in Deutschland nachwirkte.

    Abstract: Der opulent ausgestattete, reich illustrierte Band eines Journalisten führt durch die Geschichte des Hamburger Hafens und seiner Betreiber von 1816 - damals noch ein Hafen an der Elbe mit zahlreichen Hafenbecken, später umgebaut zu einem offenen Tidehafen - bis heute. Seit Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts blühte der Direkthandel mit Amerika und Hamburg konnte als Stadtstaat eigene Handelsverträge abschließen. Mit dem Aufkommen der Dampfschifffahrt begann eine rasante Entwicklung - unterbrochen von Katastrophen und Kriegen - die den Hamburger Hafen zu einem der größten Containerhafen Europas werden lässt. Nach der Wiedervereinigung, der Öffnung zum Osten und der Erschließung der asiatischen Märkte hat sich der Hafen (wieder) zum Welthafen entwickelt. Aber auch die Schattenseiten dieser Entwicklung - Umweltverschmutzung, Ausbeutung und soziales Elend - werden benannt.     Abstract: Nel giugno del 1783 i fratelli Montgolfier aprirono la via delle nuvole con un mezzo 'più leggero dell'aria', la mongolfiera, 120 anni dopo, altri due fratelli, Wilbur e Orville Wright, conquistarono la terza dimensione con un mezzo 'più pensate dell'aria', l'aeroplano. Due modi differenti per raggiungere quello che Wilbur definì 'il più grande desiderio dell'umanità': volare. In questa breve storia del volo, vengono raccontate le gesta di quanti con ardore e follia, criterio e scelleratezza hanno tentato la via dei cieli: sono quei temerari che per guadagnarsi il sogno hanno messo in conto ossa rotte e cadute rovinose. Di alcuni è rimasta la gloria e il ricordo scolpito nella storia, ad altri un nome perduto nelle cronache di un tempo che fu. E quando a inizio Novecento si diffondono i primi brevetti di pilota, l'era pionieristica del volo inizia a volgere al termine. Ma per quei temerari a bordo di macchine volanti questo significa solo compiere imprese sempre più ardite lungo la via delle nuvole.

    Abstract: The HMMM2008 International Symposium on History of Machines and Mechanisms is the third event of a series started in 2000 as the main activity of the IFToMM Permanent commission for History of MMS, Mechanism and Machine Science. The aim of History of Machines and Mechanisms conferences is to establish an international forum for presenting and discussing historical developments in the field of Mechanism and Machine Science (MMS). The subject area covers all aspects of the development of HMM, such as machines, mechanisms, kinematics, design methods, etc., that are related to people, events, objects, indeed, anything that assisted in the development of the HMM, and is presented in the form of reasoning and arguments, demonstration and identification, and description and evaluation. The HMM2008 Proceedings contain 26 papers by authors from all over the world. The topics include historical development on mechanism and machine theory, historical figures and their works, history of mechanical engineering, ancient machines and mechanisms, reconstruction design of ancient devices, mechanism and machine design, and engineering education. This book is of interest to researchers, graduate students and engineers specializing or promoting the history of science and technology, in particular on mechanism and machine science. This book will provide the readers with extensive background information on the origin and the history of the invention of fundamental machines and mechanisms, and will undoubtedly provide further understanding and motivation for their own research and/or consultancy work.

    Abstract: Diese Arbeit ist der Versuch, durch die Verbindung von kunsthistorischen und politikgeschichtlichen Erkenntnissen ein genaueres korrekteres Bild der behandelten Epochen zu erhalten. Die Allegorie der Austria ist dabei das Instrument zur genauen Evaluierung der jeweiligen nationalen und staatspolitischen Vorstellungen. Die Allegorie der Austria verkörpert dabei sehr genau die jeweiligen politischen Konstellationen. Die dynamische Austria mit der rudolphinischen Hauskrone bedeutet die Prädominanz des Herrscherhauses, die bürgerliche Austria mit der Mauerkrone die Vorstellungen dieser Bevölkerungsschicht, vor allem im deutschsprachigen Teil von Österreich, die Stellung des Staates über dem Herrscher der Sinne Hegels, sowie auch die siegreiche Austria mit dem Lorbeerkranz als Zeichen der Überwindung der Revolution von 1848. Gerade im Vielvölkerstaat der Habsburger, wo die divergierenden gesamtstaatlichen und nationalen Sichtweisen zu Konflikten führen mußten, ist so die Allegorie der Austria ein wichtiger Hinweis auf die jeweilige Stellung der Öffentlichkeit zu der angedeuteten Problematik. Der in der Arbeit vorgegebene Zeitraum umfaßt die Periode vom Beginn des Aufstiegs Österreichs zur Großmacht bis zum Ende der Monarchie nach dem ersten Weltkrieg. Dabei werden verschiedene künstlerische Aspekte in einer neueren und genaueren Betrachtungsweise angesprochen, wie zum Beispiel der Zyklus von 13 Porträts aus dem Umfeld von Rudolph II. im Linzer Museum Nordico, die in der großen Ausstellung über diesen Herrscher "Prag um 1600" nicht repräsentiert waren und die am Beginn der Austria-Allegorie in der bildenden Kunst stehen, oder die Denkmalsentwürfe Otto Wagners, die im Großteil der Literatur über diesen Architekten nur als Gelegenheitsentwürfe bezeichnet werden, aber in Wahrheit ernstzunehmende Auseinandersetzungen Wagners mit der nationalen Kunst sind. Ein weiterer gedanklicher Ansatzpunkt ist der Vergleich des Ringens um einen modernen Gesamtstaat vor allem seit dem Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts im Verhältnis zum heutigen Europa mit seinen überstaatlichen Strukturen. Dazu gehört die im Weltkrieg aufgekommene Idee von Mitteleuropa unter Einschluß der Türkei und der Wiedererrichtung des Königreiches Polen als Pufferstaat gegenüber dem revolutionären Russland.     Abstract: The intention of this paper is to give a correct inside in the review of the discussed periods. It tries to achieve this by using the means of Art History and Political History to get an exact inside. The allegorical representation of the Austria in this case is the means to get it. It stands for the specific aspects of the time, so for instance the dynastic Austria with the crown of Emperor Rudolph II. meaning the predominance of the ruling Habsburgs, the civic Austria with the mural crown showing the ideas of the middle class, especially in the German speaking parts of the country, with the acceptance of the predominance of the state over the ruler, according to Hegel, or also the victorious Austria with the laurel wreath as a symbol of the conquest of the revolution of 1848. The Habsburg monarchy including many different nations was the proper breeding ground of dissatisfaction and diversified nationalistic ideas. So the representation of the Austria is an important means of showing these ideas. The periods the paper is working on are roughly speaking starting with the time of the beginning of the position of the monarchy as one of the ruling powers of Europe until her dissolution and the end of World War I. Different aspects of art history are also dealt with. So for example the 13 portraits of Habsburg rulers in the Museum Nordico at Linz, which are positioned in the time of Rudolph II. and mark the beginning of the representation of the allegory of the Austria, or the designs for monuments by Otto Wagner which are dealt with in the many books on this architect only as a side issue, whereas they are a very important part of wagners work and show his national feelings, towards his fatherland. It is furthermore interesting to look at the nationalistic problems shown in this paper and compare them with contemporary Europe and the overcoming of them. These ideas are not new, the date back to the 19th and especially the beginning of the 20th century when the Monarchy tried to overcome the problems with the slogan of Großösterreich (Greater Austria). During World War one followed the idea of Mitteleuropa (Central Europe) including Turkey and the institution of a Polish State to hold off revolutionary Russia

    Abstract: The Wheels of Apollo and the Quest for Mars fills a need for a complete history of the Lunar Roving Vehicle used on Apollo 15, 16 and 17, drawing on many photographs never before published. It also tells the story of the robotic rovers used on Mars, and concludes with a description of the new designs of rovers planned for The New Vision for Exploration now underway at NASA. The book provides extensive quotes from the astronauts who drove the LRV on the Moon from interviews conducted especially for the book. It also details new material from interviews of engineers and managers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory covering the robotic rovers, Sojourner, Sprit and Opportunity. The Foreword is written by David R. Scott, Commander of Apollo 15.     Abstract: Ironically, the loss of Challenger in January 1986 fired my interest in space exploration more than any other single event. I was nine years old. My parents were, at the time, midway through moving house and, luckily, the TV was one of the few domestic items still to be packed. I watched the entire horror unfold live on all of the network stations. Admittedly, my fascination with rockets and astronauts, stars and planets had begun several years earlier, but Challenger's destruction turned it from an occasional hobby to a fascination which has remained with me ever since. In September 1988, aged 11,1 came home from school to watch STS-26 return the Shuttle fleet to orbital operations. Five years later, I gave a speech on the STS-51L disaster to my teacher as part of my GCSE English assessment. Another decade passed and, now a teacher myself, I returned to my school one cold Monday morning to explain to my pupils what had happened to Challenger's sister ship, Columbia, a few days earlier. In some ways, the loss of Columbia affected me more deeply than Challenger

    Abstract: Little is known of Soviet and Russian lunar exploration although, in fact, the Soviet Union/Russia: Sent the first spaceships past the moon, the first to hit the moon and the first to circle the moon Was first to soft land on and orbit the moon Was first to send a spaceship around the moon and recover it on Earth Came very close to sending a cosmonaut around the moon first Built and successfully tested, in Earth orbit, a lunar lander Pioneered sophisticated, precise high-speed reentries into the Earth's atmosphere Came close to perfecting a giant moon rocket, the N-1 Retrieved three sets of rock samples from the moon by automatic spacecraft Landed advanced roving laboratories that explored the moon for months on end, traveling 48km Designed long-term lunar bases. These were remarkable achievements requiring a considerable level of engineering sophistication and have a place in the contemporary story of astronautics. Recent landings on Mars use, essentially, the very techniques developed by Russia to land on and explore the moon in the 1960s and 1970s. As an acknowledged expert and author of several books on the Soviet and Russian space programme, Brian Harvey is ideally suited to cover not only the engineering and scientific side but also the human stories of the Soviet and Russian lunar programme. These include those of the cosmonaut squad that trained to land on the moon, but was stood down, and of the designers who tried to realise the dream of a Russian moon, from Tikhonravov to Mishin: a Soviet lunar programme was first proposed by designer Mikhail Tikhonravov in a children’s magazine in 1951 and he persuaded a sceptical Soviet leadership of the value of a moon programme. Following Sputnik, the first lunar flights quickly achieved the key goals of hitting, circling and photographing the moon in 1959. The Soviet Union achieved all the early ‘firsts’ in lunar exploration, such as soft landing and orbiting the moon, and Brian Harvey will recount the frantic efforts to rival America’s Apollo and the dramatic hours of 21st July 1969, when Russia tried to soft land Luna 15 in the Sea of Crises even as Armstrong and Aldrin explored the moon in the nearby Sea of Tranquility

    Abstract: Philip Baker charts the history of manned space stations from the very beginning in a logical, chronological order. He tells the story of the two major space powers starting out on their very separate programs, but slowly coming together through ASTP, Shuttle-Mir, and the ISS, and includes programs that rarely get mentioned - the US Manned Orbiting Laboratory, and the Soviet Almaz station, both military backed projects. The Mir space station was one of the greatest human achievements in modern history, and a thorough telling of its story is essential to this book.     Abstract: Das vorgelegte Werk ist als 1. Band einer zweiteilig geplanten Publikation verfasst worden, die sich mit den kulturhistorischen und architekturgeschichtlichen Aspekten der Hotel- und Villenbauten am Semmering im südlichen Niederösterreich beschäftigt. Die Arbeit ist eine Fortsetzung eines vom FWF geförderten Forschungsprojekts (Nr. P 13959 ) unter der wissenschaftlichen Leitung und Begutachtung des Antragstellers (Univ.-Prof.Dr. Mario Schwarz). Gegenstand der Untersuchungen und Ausführungen dieses Bandes ist die kulturgeschichtliche Stellung und Bedeutung der Südbahngesellschaft bei der Erschließung der Semmering-Region als erstrangig bedeutendes Naherholungsgebiet des Wiener Bürgertums im späten 19. Jahrhundertwende bis zum Ersten Weltkrieg. Die Untersuchung zeigt, dass die Aufschließung dieses Gebiets hauptsächlich auf die Initiative des Direktors der Südbahngesellschaft Friedrich Schüler sowie auf den Hofbildhauer Franz Schönthaler zurückgeht. Die Umsetzung der Planungen im Bereich der Hotelarchitektur ist in der ersten Phase auf Architekt Franz Wilhelm, den Mitarbeiter des Erbauers des Wiener Südbahnhofes Wilhelm Flattich zurückzuführen, in einer zweiten Phase auf die Architekten Alfred Wildhack und Robert v. Morpurgo. Die Forschungen der Verfasserin erschließen sowohl zu den bisher gänzlich unbearbeiteten Werken dieser Architekten, als auch zu ihren Biographien wichtige Erkenntnisse. Völlig neue, wichtige Ergebnisse brachte die Untersuchung hinsichtlich der Zusammenhänge der Hotelbauten am Semmering mit den großen Hotelanlagen der Südbahngesellschaft in Toblach (Dobiacco; von Wilhelm Flattich) und Abbazia (Opatija; von Alfred Wildhack u.a.) als Aktivitäten einer corporate identity der Bahngesellschaft. Diese Ergebnisse stellen die Südbahngesellschaft mit an die Weltspitze der berühmten Hotelaanlagen von Eisenbahngesellschaften, für die die Autorin zahlreiche Vergleichsbeispiele von Großbritannien bis in die USA anführt. Die Verfasserin erschließt damit den Bereich eines bisher erst in wenigen Ansätzen erforschten Gebiets der Architekturgeschichte. Sowohl vom Ambiente als auch von den gewählten Stileigenschaften der Bauten bestehen jedoch auch wichtige Bezüge der Hotelarchitektur des Semmering zu den Hotelbauten in der Schweiz.     Abstract: The present manuscript is intended to be part I of a publication in two volumes, which deals with the historic architecture in the region of "Semmering" in southern Lower Austria from the point of view of art history, cultural history and history of architecture. The study was attempted in continuation of the FWF-project P 13959 under scientifical direction and supervision of the applicant (Prof.Dr. Mario Schwarz). Main topic of this study is the role and importance of the "Suedbahngesellschaft" (Southern Railway Company) in the process of the formation of the Semmering-region as a first-rate holiday resort of the Viennese society during the late 19th century up to the beginning of World War I. The study shows that the forming of this region mainly depended on the initiative of Friedrich Schueler, the Southern Railways Company's director, and Franz Schoenthaler, sculptor in duty of the Imperial Court. The materialization of the planning in the field of hotel-architecture in the first phase was due to architect Franz Wilhelm - collaborator of Wilhelm Flattich, who designed the railway-station of the Southern Railway Company at Vienna, in the second phase due to the architects Alfred Wildhack and Robert v. Morpurgo. The author's research brought a lot of new insight in work and biographies of these architects, who have been neglected so far by the art history. New, important results were achieved by this study concerning the links between the Semmering hotel-architecture and the grand hotel-resorts at Dobiacco (Toblach; architect: Wilhelm Flattich) and Opatija (Abbazia; architect: Alfred Wildhack e.a.), built by the Southern Railway Company as well, which have to be seen as activities in sense of the company's "corporate identity". Thus the company appears among the leading entrepreneurs in the world as founder of railway-hotels. The author presents several famous examples of this kind of hotels from Great Britain to the USA. Here the study is entering a field of architectural research, which still stands at the beginning. There are also important relations between the Semmering hotel-architecture and the historical hotels of Switzerland. In a large panorama the author includes the Semmering hotels in the general regional development of the "Wiener Hausberge" (hills and mountains near Vienna) during the second half of 19th century, especially in the time after the construction of the Semmering railway.
