Als Beitrag zur Klärung einer gegenwärtig in Europa und vor allem in Deutschland viel diskutierten Frage definiert das Buch den Heimat-Begriff jenseits von identitären und nationalen Vereinnahmungen als einen Modus der nachhaltigen Weltbeziehung und der Zugehörigkeit neu - und macht ihn so für politisch-gesellschaftliche Entwürfe dienstbar.

    Abstract: "At the end of the 19th century, everyone knew that people were defined by their race and sex and were fated by birth and biology to be more or less intelligent, able, nurturing, or warlike. But one rogue researcher looked at the data and decided everyone was wrong. Franz Boas was the very image of a mad scientist: a wild-haired immigrant with a thick German accent. By the 1920s he was also the foundational thinker and public face of a new school of thought at Columbia University called cultural anthropology. He proposed that cultures did not exist on a continuum from primitive to advanced. Instead, every society solves the same basic problems -- from childrearing to how to live well -- with its own set of rules, beliefs, and taboos.     Abstract: « Despite a rich history of ethnographic research in Middle Eastern societies, the region is frequently portrayed as marginal to anthropology. The contributors to this volume reject this view and show how the Middle East is in fact vital to the discipline and how Middle Eastern anthropologists have developed theoretical and methodological tools that address and challenge the region's political, ethical, and intellectual concerns. The contributors to this volume are students of Paul Dresch, an anthropologist known for his incisive work on Yemeni tribalism and customary law. As they expand upon his ideas and insights, these essays ask questions that have long preoccupied anthropologists, such as how do place, point of view, and style combine to create viable bodies of knowledge; how is scholarship shaped by the historical context in which it is located; and why have duration and form become so problematic in the study of Middle Eastern societies? Special attention is given to understanding local terms, contested knowledge claims, what remains unseen and unsaid in social life, and to cultural patterns and practices that persist over long stretches of time, seeming to predate and outlast events.     Abstract: Als Phantom wird ein Trugbild bezeichnet, eine Täuschung oder ein Blendwerk. Es ist weder zu greifen noch nachzuweisen, aber es scheint anwesend zu sein. Genauso verhält es sich mit der Idee, die Menschheit in Rassen einzuteilen. Das Rassenkonzept ist ein künstliches und bildgewaltiges Ordnungssystem. Es existiert nicht in der Natur, aber es wirkt als soziale Realität. Die Konstruktion von Rassen ist das Ergebnis von Rassismus, nicht seine Grundlage. Rassenidee und Rassenbilder, die seit Jahrhunderten in Wissenschaft, Politik und Alltag reproduziert werden, kombinieren körperliche Merkmale mit sozialen und kulturellen Mustern und behaupten, Menschen so eindeutig zuordnen zu können. Dass die gewählten Kriterien mitunter willkürlich wechseln, ist in diesen Bildern nicht sichtbar. Der vorliegende Band versammelt analytische Essays und Interviews zur Geschichte und Gegenwart der Rassenidee sowie Auszüge aus einschlägigen Texten der Rassismus-Theorie. Er dokumentiert so die Vielfalt der Deutungsmöglichkeiten eines Phantoms aus verschiedenen methodischen, disziplinären und theoretischen Perspektiven. Quelle: Klappentext.

    Abstract: How do we live in and with empire? The contributors to this book pursue this question by examining empire as an unequally shared present. Here empire stands as an entrenched, if often invisible, part of everyday life central to making and remaking a world in which it is too often presented as an aberration rather than as a structuring condition. This volume presents scholarship from across U.S. imperial formations: settler colonialism, overseas territories, communities impacted by U.S. military action of political intervention, Cold War alliances and fissures, and, most recently, new forms of U.S. empire after 9/11. From the Mohawk Nation, Korea, and the Philippines to Iraq and the hills of New Jersey, the contributors show how a methodological and theoretical commitment to ethnography sharpens all of our understandings of the novel and timeworn ways people live, thrive, and resist in the imperial present

    Abstract: Recent research has demonstrated that, in the Roman, Late Antique, Early Islamic and Medieval worlds, glass was traded over long distances, from the Eastern Mediterranean, mainly Egypt and Israel, to Northern Africa, the Western Mediterranean and Northern Europe. 'Things that travelled', a collaboration between the UCL Early Glass Technology Research Network, the Association for the History of Glass and the British Museum, aims to build on this knowledge. Covering all aspects of glass production, technology, distribution and trade in Roman, Byzantine and Early Medieval/Early Islamic times, including studies from Britain, Egypt, Cyprus, Italy and many others, the volume combines the strengths of the sciences and cultural studies to offer a new approach to research on ancient glass. By bringing together such a varied mix of contributors, specialising in a range of geographical areas and chronological time frames, this volume also offers a valuable contribution to broader discussions on glass within political, economic, cultural and historical arenas

    Abstract: "Medicine on the Margins explores the ways in which Tibetan medical doctors have preserved and revitalized aspects of Tibetan medicine over the past fifty years. During decades of forced sociopolitical and economic upheaval in Tsang Province of China's Tibetan Autonomous Region--with medical texts destroyed or hidden, teachers and lamas imprisoned or otherwise silenced, and almost all trade in medicinal ingredients halted--they had little hope that their 'science of healing' (Sowa Rigpa) would again flourish. Today, however, Tibetan medicine is in vogue, promoted by the Chinese Communist Party as a pillar industry of Tibet and a valuable asset of Tibetans' 'nationality minority culture.' For urban Tibetans, traditional medicine is one of the few areas where a relatively liberal expression of Tibetan identity and language is possible. In urban, medically pluralistic settings it is an easily available resource, while in remote areas, its practice and transmission to the younger generation faces many challenges. The passing away of the last practitioner of a certain pulse-reading or compounding of an herbal formula, for example, could mean the end of a long chain of transmission. For reasons of lack of access, continued repression of nonofficial histories, fear, and loss of living memory, Tibetan medical doctors--the so-called amchi--have been little studied. This volume presents their story, showing how practitioners from Tsang have retained crucial links in the teaching of medical knowledge despite the near-annihilation of monastic Buddhism and 'medical houses'"--Provided by publisher

    Abstract: This volume addresses the fraught relationship between market and society in times of social and economic crisis, exploring how they interact in key social, cultural, and political arenas on a global scale. The contributors examine the neoliberal market in anthropological and ethnographic terms to question whether "market logic" has won out against social aspects of human existence in a framework of minimal state protection and the devaluation of human labor. Fruitfully combining empirical data and theoretical approaches, the volume investigates the extent to which ordinary people accept unequal allocations of resources and examines their sense of belonging in an expansive neoliberal economy.

    Abstract: This book brings together a roster of prominent contributors to present a strategic interactionist perspective on the study of contentious politics in the Middle East in response to the Arab uprisings. The book also examines short to medium-term adaptations of the regimes and the collective action of opponents in the post-uprisings period, as well as the subsequent trajectories of the protesters themselves in the face of new forms of authoritarianism or democratisation

    Abstract: Drive the streets of Nairobi, and you are sure to see many matatus—colorful minibuses that transport huge numbers of people around the city. Once ramshackle affairs held together with duct tape and wire, matatus today are name-brand vehicles maxed out with aftermarket detailing. They can be stately black or extravagantly colored, sporting names, slogans, or entire tableaus, with airbrushed portraits of everyone from Kanye West to Barack Obama. In this richly interdisciplinary book, Kenda Mutongi explores the history of the matatu from the 1960s to the present. As Mutongi shows, matatus offer a window onto the socioeconomic and political conditions of late-twentieth-century Africa. In their diversity of idiosyncratic designs, they reflect multiple and divergent aspects of Kenyan life—including, for example, rapid urbanization, organized crime, entrepreneurship, social insecurity, the transition to democracy, and popular culture—at once embodying Kenya’s staggering social problems as well as the bright promises of its future. Offering a shining model of interdisciplinary analysis, Mutongi mixes historical, ethnographic, literary, linguistic, and economic approaches to tell the story of the matatu and explore the entrepreneurial aesthetics of the postcolonial world

    Abstract: Slide 1 Les Scories de forge du Pays dogon Les Scories de forge du Pays dogon (Mali) Entre ethnoarchéologie, archéologie expérimentale et archéométrie Cet ouvrage est le résultat d’une thèse de doctorat menée entre le Pays dogon au Mali, et l’université de Fribourg en Suisse, entre fin 2007 et début 2014. Le point central de cette recherche concerne une classe de mobilier archéologique que sont les scories de forge, déchets métallurgiques qui se forment au fond du foyer de forge au cours du travail traditionnel d’objets en fer. Les études qui leur sont consacrées montrent que ces matériaux montrent une incroyable variabilité, qui témoigne de l’immense diversité des travaux de forge. Les recherches actuelles cherchent ainsi naturellement à établir un lien entre les scories, mises au jour par les archéologues, et les activités de forge passées. L’originalité de cette recherche est le développement d’une démarche de travail, au croisement de l’ethnoarchéologie, l’archéologie expérimentale et l’archéométrie. Ce travail a comporté une phase de terrain au Pays dogon (Mali), où forgerons et traditions métallurgiques sont encore préservés. Cette recherche de terrain a donné lieu à des expérimentations dirigées de travaux de forge, durant lesquels différents paramètres sont contrôlés. Le travail de laboratoire a permis de mettre en évidence les caractéristiques intrinsèques des scories. Toutes ces données mettent en lumière des groupes distincts de scories de forge, et constituent un référentiel unique. Raphaëlle Soulignac propose différents scenarii de modalités de formation des scories dans le foyer, en lien avec les travaux qui les ont produits. Ce travail permet ainsi d’enrichir nos connaissances sur les gestes, les pratiques des forgerons et les déchets de forgeage, en mettant en avant un patrimoine important de nos sociétés anciennes

    Abstract: Left-wing intellectuals in Britain and the US had long repudiated the Soviet regime. Why was the collapse of the Eastern Bloc experienced as a shock that destabilised their identities and political allegiances then? What happened to a collective project that had started out to formulate a socialist vision different from both really existing socialism and social democracy? This study endeavours to answer both questions, focusing on generational networks rather than individuals and investigating political academic journals after 1989 to paint the picture of a Left deeply troubled by the triumph of a capitalism unfettered by any counter-force.

    Abstract: In this innovative legal history of economic life in the Western Indian Ocean, Bishara examines the transformations of Islamic law and Islamicate commercial practices during the emergence of modern capitalism in the region. In this time of expanding commercial activity, a mélange of Arab, Indian, Swahili and Baloch merchants, planters, jurists, judges, soldiers and seamen forged the frontiers of a shared world. The interlinked worlds of trade and politics that these actors created, the shared commercial grammars and institutions that they developed and the spatial and socio-economic mobilities they engaged in endured until at least the middle of the twentieth century. This study examines the Indian Ocean from Oman to India and East Africa over an extended period of time, drawing together the histories of commerce, law and empire in a sophisticated, original and richly textured history of capitalism in the Islamic world

    Abstract: "Tells the story of migrants and communities in the Southeast Asian borderlands. The Black Flags raided their way from southern China into northern Vietnam, competing in the second half of the nineteenth century against other armed migrants and uplands communities for control of commerce (e.g., opium) and natural resources (e.g., copper for making coins). At the edges of empires--the Qing empire in China, the Vietnamese empire governed by the Nguyen dynasty, and, eventually, French colonial Vietnam--the Black Flags and their rivals sustained networks of power and dominance through the framework of political regimes. The history of these imperial bandits and the communities that resisted them demonstrates the plasticity of borderlines, the limits of imposed boundaries, and the flexible division between apolitical banditry and political rebellion in the borderlands of China and Vietnam. Historical studies of these areas tend to examine events only from the perspective of local communities or from the anxious view of imperial officials. By focusing on the Black Flags, upland communities, and their relationships to various empires, this study illustrates borderland processes at the violent edges of empire. It contributes to the ongoing reassessment of borderland areas as frontiers for state expansion, arguing that projects of empire often were instruments of power for armed migrants and their allies, and that, as a setting for forms of human activity that defy tight boundaries, borderlands continued to exist well after the establishment of formal boundaries"--

    Abstract: The contribution of German ethnography to Australian anthropological scholarship on Aboriginal societies and cultures has been limited, primarily because few people working in the field read German. But it has also been neglected because its humanistic concerns with language, religion and mythology contrasted with the mainstream British social anthropological tradition that prevailed in Australia until the late 1960s. The advent of native title claims, which require drawing on the earliest ethnography for any area, together with an increase in research on rock art of the Kimberley region, has stimulated interest in this German ethnography, as have some recent book translations. Even so, several major bodies of ethnography, such as the 13 volumes on the cultures of northeastern South Australia and the seven volumes on the Aranda of the Alice Springs region, remain inaccessible, along with many ethnographically rich articles and reports in mission archives. In 18 chapters, this book introduces and reviews the significance of this neglected work, much of it by missionaries who first wrote on Australian Aboriginal cultures in the 1840s. Almost all of these German speakers, in particular the missionaries, learnt an Aboriginal language in order to be able to document religious beliefs, mythology and songs as a first step to conversion. As a result, they produced an enormously valuable body of work that will greatly enrich regional ethnographies

    Abstract: In Kindheit und Jugend ist eine Auseinandersetzung mit ästhetischen Darstellungs- und Wahrnehmungsweisen hochgradig relevant. Die Bedeutsamkeit ästhetischer Positionierungen - etwa durch die Wahl der Kleidung oder Accessoires, durch Make-up oder technische Geräte - kann einerseits als Anzeichen einer sehr erfolgreichen Kommerzialisierung von Kindheit und Jugend gedeutet werden. Andererseits zeugt sie aber auch von einem Gespür, mit dem sich Kinder und Jugendliche die Alltagswelt, in der sie leben, zu eigen machen. Um die sozialen Verhältnisse von Ästhetiken, Ökonomien und Generationenbeziehungen in den Blick zu nehmen, versammelt dieser interdisziplinäre Band Forschungsperspektiven zu Alltagsästhetiken in Kindheit und Jugend.

    Abstract: Unter dem Stichwort Massen und Masken werden zwei Phänomene aus kulturwissenschaftlicher und theologischer Perspektive beleuchtet, die komplementär sind. Viele Bereiche des menschlichen Lebens werden von Massenkultur geprägt. Zu einer entsprechenden Eventkultur gehören die vielen Festivals, aber auch der Kirchentag. Massenevents werden in Szene gesetzt und medial verbreitet. Mit Blick auf die Massenveranstaltungen des Nationalsozialismus erweisen sie sich als ambivalent. Das Subjekt ist nicht nur Individuum, sondern auch Teil einer größeren Menge, die es ihm ermöglicht, Erfahrungen von Ekstase zu machen. Karneval ist eine bestimmte Form der heutigen Massenkultur, die ihre eigenen Traditionen mit sich trägt. Karneval inszeniert sich selbst und die Menschen, die daran teilnehmen. Die Verkleidung, die Musik, die Umzüge spielen eine Rolle. Zugleich fordert der Karneval mit seinem überschießenden Charakter heraus. Grenzverletzungen gehören stets dazu und finden in der Verletzung religiöser Gefühle einen neuralgischen Punkt. Aber auch vestimäre und philosophische Fragestellungen bleiben nicht aus.     Abstract: An account of all the new and surprising evidence now available for the beginnings of the earliest civilizations that contradict the standard narrative. Why did humans abandon hunting and gathering for sedentary communities dependent on livestock and cereal grains, and governed by precursors of today's states? Most people believe that plant and animal domestication allowed humans, finally, to settle down and form agricultural villages, towns, and states, which made possible civilization, law, public order, and a presumably secure way of living. But archaeological and historical evidence challenges this narrative. The first agrarian states, says James C. Scott, were born of accumulations of domestications: first fire, then plants, livestock, subjects of the state, captives, and finally women in the patriarchal family-all of which can be viewed as a way of gaining control over reproduction. Scott explores why we avoided sedentism and plow agriculture, the advantages of mobile subsistence, the unforeseeable disease epidemics arising from crowding plants, animals, and grain, and why all early states are based on millets and cereal grains and unfree labor. He also discusses the "barbarians" who long evaded state control, as a way of understanding continuing tension between states and nonsubject peoples

Young people across the globe, burdened with debt and unsatisfactory job prospects, are struggling to establish households, marry, and, perhaps most significantly, "feel" grown up. For them, achievement of adulthood has become increasingly elusive. Elusive Adulthoods poses the question "What is adulthood?" and examines how the field of anthropology has come to overlook this meaningful life transition. Through diverse case studies, contributors explore a variety of means by which adulthood can be recognized, such as negotiated relationships with others and as a form of upward class mobility. Contributors also grapple with the difficulties that come from a sense of having missed full adulthood - perhaps due to rapid social change or reluctance to embrace the necessary subordination to job and family. The barriers are alleged to be located above all within the family.
