    Abstract: Mit dem Koalitionsvertrag von 2018 wurde das koloniale Erbe als Teil der deutschen Geschichte anerkannt. In einem Europa, in dem Nachfahren einstiger Kolonialmächte zusammen mit Menschen aus ehemals kolonisierten Ländern leben, gibt es sehr verschiedene Blicke in die Vergangenheit - geeint jedoch im Wunsch nach gesellschaftlichen Grundwerten in der Gegenwart. Daraus ergeben sich zentrale Fragen für die postkoloniale Museologie: Wie geht man mit Sammlungsgut aus kolonialen Kontexten um? Welche Erinnerungspolitik soll vertreten und wie kann struktureller Rassismus abgebaut werden? Anna Greve führt zur Beantwortung dieser Fragen erstmals die Kritische Weissseins-Forschung mit ihren Begriffen und Methoden in die praktische Museumsarbeit ein. (Verlag)

    Abstract: Was ist Wahnsinn und was ist Kunst? In dem Buch wirft die Autorin einen neuen Blick auf Kunstwerke aus der weltberühmten Sammlung Prinzhorn in Heidelberg. Die Werke, die um das Jahr 1900 von Patienten in psychiatrischen Einrichtungen geschaffen wurden, werden erstmals aus einer phänomenologischen Perspektive heraus betrachtet. Ausgangspunkt ist die Phänomenologie des Philosophen Maurice Merleau-Ponty und seines Konzepts von Leiblichkeit. Im Mittelpunkt stehen die Werke von Elisabeth Faulhaber, Carl Lange und Edmund Träger. Die Autorin befragt die Werke der drei Art-Brut-Künstler nach den darin zum Ausdruck kommenden Zeit- und Raumordnungen, nach dem Verhältnis der Künstler zu sich selbst und zur Welt. Diese Bildbetrachtungen ermöglichen es Lesern, sich den Künstlern anzunähern und ihr „Zur-Welt-Sein“ nachzuvollziehen. Das vermeintlich Kranke wird durch die Analyse der Bildsprache als existenzielle und momentane Balancefindung verstehbar. Was auf den ersten Blick fremd erscheint, wird auf Ordnungsstrukturen und Metaphernbildungen im schöpferischen Prozess zurückgeführt. So entwickelt die Autorin ein neues Verständnis von Kunst, geschaffen von Menschen in Phasen existenzieller seelischer Krisen. Sie geht damit weit über kunsthistorische Analysen auf der einen und psychiatrische Diagnosen auf der anderen Seite hinaus und stellt gängige Definitionen von Kunst und Krankheit in Frage. Die Autorin erweitert die wissenschaftliche Debatte zu Phänomenologie und Bildsprache und bringt dafür erstmals alle verfügbaren Quellen und Erkenntnisse zu den drei Vertretern der Outsider Art zusammen. Ein Buch für Phänomenologen, Kunsthistoriker, Psychiater und Psychotherapeuten, das auch interessierten Laien eine Kunstbetrachtung aus phänomenologischer Perspektive bietet

    Abstract: The volume examines the mutually constitutive relationship between the materiality of objects and their aesthetic meanings. Its approach connects material culture with art history, curation, technologies and practices of making. A central dimension of the case studies collected here is the mobility of objects between Europe and China and the transformations that unfold as a result of their transcultural lives. Many of the objects studied here are relatively unknown or understudied. The stories they recount suggest new ways of thinking about space, cultural geographies and the complex and often contradictory association of power and culture. These studies of transcultural objects can suggest pathways for museum experts by uncovering the multi-layered identities and temporalities of objects that can no longer be labelled as located in single regions. It is also addressed to students of art history, of European and Chinese studies and scholars of consumer culture. « This eagerly awaited volume offers deep and extensive insights into the fast-growing field of material culture studies.     Abstract: Der Begriff des Subjekts meint im Kern das Erkenntnissubjekt. Damit wird vornehmlich auf eine kognitive Dimension verwiesen, die sich mit Termini wie Vernunft oder Rationalität konnotieren lässt. Mit dem Blick auf die Ästhetik lässt sich dies durch Formen der Sinnlichkeit und der Kreativität ergänzen. Die „Ästhetik des Subjekts“ zielt dabei auf eine allgemeine Subjekttheorie, die als Kritische Theorie angelegt sein soll. In diesem Kontext wird die ästhetische Erfahrung zu einem Baustein der Emanzipation. Building on the scholarship of key art historians and theorists such as Judith Butler and Mieke Bal, Claudette Lauzon embarks upon a transnational analysis of contemporary artists who challenge the assumption that ‘home’ is a stable site of belonging. Lauzon’s boundary-breaking discussion of artists including Krzysztof Wodiczko, Sanitago Sierra, Doris Salcedo, and Yto Barrada posits that contemporary art offers a unique set of responses to questions of home and belonging in an increasingly unwelcoming world. From the legacies of Colombia’s ‘dirty war’ to migrant North African workers crossing the Mediterranean, The Unmaking of Home in Contemporary Art bears witness to the suffering of others whose overriding notion of home reveals the universality of human vulnerability and the limits of empathy

    Abstract: One may visit famous gardens in Tokyo, Kyoto, or Osaka--or one may visit Japanese-styled gardens in New York, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Berlin, London, Paris, São Paulo, or Singapore. We often view these gardens as representative of the essence of Japanese culture. Christian Tagsold argues, however, that the idea of the Japanese garden has less do to with Japan's history and traditions, and more to do with its interactions with the West. The first Japanese gardens in the West appeared at the world's fairs in Vienna in 1873 and Philadelphia in 1876 and others soon appeared in museums, garden expositions, the estates of the wealthy, and public parks. By the end of the nineteenth century, the Japanese garden, described as mystical and attuned to nature, had usurped the popularity of the Chinese garden, so prevalent in the eighteenth century. While Japan sponsored the creation of some gardens in a series of acts of cultural diplomacy, the Japanese style was interpreted and promulgated by Europeans and Americans as well. But the fashion for Japanese gardens would decline in inverse relation to the rise of Japanese militarism in the 1930s, their rehabilitation coming in the years following World War II, with the rise of the Zen meditation garden style that has come to dominate the Japanese garden in the West. Tagsold has visited over eighty gardens in ten countries with an eye to questioning how these places signify Japan in non-Japanese geographical and cultural contexts. He ponders their history, the reasons for their popularity, and their connections to geopolitical events, explores their shifting aesthetic, and analyzes those elements which convince visitors that these gardens are "authentic." He concludes that a constant process of cultural translation between Japanese and Western experts and commentators marked these spaces as expressions of otherness, creating an idea of the Orient and its distinction from the West.--Publisher website

    Abstract: Addressing a wide range of improvised art and music forms—from jazz and cinema to dance and literature—this volume's contributors locate improvisation as a key site of mediation between the social and the aesthetic. As a catalyst for social experiment and political practice, improvisation aids in the creation, contestation, and codification of social realities and identities. Among other topics, the contributors discuss the social aesthetics of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, the Feminist Improvising Group, and contemporary Malian music, as well as the virtual sociality of interactive computer music, the significance of "uncreative" improvisation, responses to French New Wave cinema, and the work of figures ranging from bell hooks and Billy Strayhorn to Kenneth Goldsmith.

    Abstract: This book examines a range of visual images of military recruitment to explore changing notions of glory, or of gloire,during the French Revolution. It raises questions about how this event re-orientated notions of ‘citizenship’ and of service to ‘la Patrie’. The opening lines of the Marseillaise are grandly declamatory: Allons enfants de la Patrie/le jour de gloire est arrivé! or, in English: Arise, children of the Homeland/The day of glory has arrived! What do these words mean in their later eighteenth-century French context? What was gloire and how was it changed by the revolutionary process? This military song, later adopted as the national anthem, represents a deceptively unifying moment of collective engagement in the making of the modern French nation. Valerie Mainz questions this through a close study of visual imagery dealing with the issue of military recruitment. From neoclassical painting to popular prints, such images typically dealt with the shift from civilian to soldier, focusing on how men, and not women, were called to serve the Homeland

    Abstract: Until recently still a blank spot on the world map of art, China today occupies one of the top positions in the rankings of the global art market and has moved into the center of the speculations and the covetousness of its protagonists. But what is really happening on the spot, beyond the ethnocentric distortions of the Western viewpoint? What social representations and uses of art can be identified? A research team from the University of St. Gallen has taken up such questions in an ethnographical field research project which enables the actors in this emergent and nonetheless already market-dominated art field to have their say

    Abstract: The monograph is the first international study to analyze and describe the process of the post-Soviet contemporary art museums from 1992 to 2015. Based on exemplary case studies, it covers the heterogeneous museum-political development, both on the state as well as on the local Moscow level. In addition, it offers a comprehensive documentation of analogous and digital sources.
