    Abstract: Klappentext: Nicht nur die Wirtschaftskonzeptionen des Sozialismus/Kommunismus sind gescheitert an den Realitäten dieser Welt. Auch der westliche Kapitalismus zeigt bedenkliche Krisensymptome. Die Frage nach geeigneten Grundlagen von Wirtschaftsordnungskonzeptionen stellt sich deshalb mit besonderer Dringlichkeit. Der gängige Neoliberalismus in der praktischen Wirtschaftspolitik aller westlich orientierten Ländern ist ebenso auf seine wissenschaftliche Basis und empirische Brauchbarkeit hin abzuklopfen wie der in östlichen bzw. sozialistischen Ländern noch immer zugrundeliegende Marxismus. Dieser Band, das Ergebnis einer mehr als 40-jährigen Forschungsarbeit, untersucht - auf Basis des Kritischen Realismus - verschiedene Wissenschaftsprogramme und setzt sie einem systematischen Vergleich aus. Dr. Reiner Porstmann lehrte und forschte fast vier Jahrzehnte an den Universitäten Göttingen und Kassel, im letzten Berufsjahrzehnt war er wissenschaftlicher Bibliothekar für Wirtschaftswissenschaften in Göttingen.

    Abstract: This book, a revised new edition, examines how money is created and how it functions within global exchange rate regimes to highlight how monetary policy can promote economic growth, full employment, and price stability. It provides an introduction to the basics of macroeconomic accounting and the domestic monetary system, as well as fiscal operations, tax policy for sovereign nations, and alternative exchange rate regimes. New topics, including central bank clearing, responses to the COVID-19 pandemic, the rise of inflation, and how to finance a Green New Deal, are also discussed. Since the second edition was published in 2015, Modern Money Theory (MMT) has been in the news with great frequency. First condemned as “crazy talk”, it was embraced in the depths of the COVID-19 pandemic as a “new” way to finance the USD5 trillion response by the administrations of both Donald Trump and Joe Biden. MMT remains in the news as its proponents reject the mainstream’s analysis of the causes of the post-pandemic inflation that has hit much of the world. It also offers an alternative approach to dealing with inflation, arguing that relying on high interest rates is misguided and causing unnecessary pain. Modern Money Theory provides the reader with a framework for understanding real world economies. It will be relevant to students, researchers, and policymakers interested in monetary policy and modern money theory. L. Randall Wray is Professor of Economics at the Levy Economics Institute of Bard College. He was invited to present on MMT before the Congressional Budget Office, and to give testimony before the House Budget Committee. The Chairman of that Committee, John Yarmuth later gave a remarkable interview in which he cogently summarized and endorsed the main conclusions of MMT.

Moving beyond an exclusive focus on borders and migration, he argues that camp accommodation must be thought of and studied as part of the urban context and as a specific form of housing. The study provides an in-depth case study, discusses policy alternatives, argues for »housing for all instead of camps«, and contributes to bringing urban and migration studies into public discussion. In times of new waves of migration, the topic of migrant accommodation within urban environments remains highly relevant today.

    Abstract: "Arguing that climate injustice is one of our most pressing urban problems, this edited volume explores the possibilities and challenges for more just urban futures under climate change. From displacement within cities through carbon gentrification, to the increasing securitization of elite spaces for climate protection, climate justice and urban justice are intimately connected.     Abstract: Everyday life as we knew it is increasingly challenged in a world of climate, social, health and political crisis. Emerging technologies, data analytics and automation open up new possibilities which have implications for energy generation, storage and energy demand. To support these changes we urgently need to rethink how energy will be sourced, shared and used. Yet existing approaches to this problem, driven by engineering, data analytics and capital, are dangerously conservative and entrenched. Energy Futures critically evaluates this context, and the energy infrastructures, stakeholders, and politics that participate in it, to propose plausible, responsible and ethical modes of encountering possible energy futures. Imagining anthropocene challenges, emerging technologies and everyday life otherwise through empirically grounded studies, opens up possible energy futures. Energy Futures proposes and demonstrates a new critical and interventional futures-oriented energy anthropology. Combining the theories and methods of futures anthropology with the critical expertise and perspectives of energy anthropology creates a powerful mode of engagement, which this book argues is needed to disrupt the dominant narratives about our energy futures. Its contributors collectively reveal and evidence through innovative ethnographic practice how new knowledge about imagined and possible energy futures can be mobilised in engagements with emerging technologies, anthropocene challenges and everyday realities. In doing so it brings together authors, analytical expertise and ethnographic evidence from the global south, north and places in between, generated through innovative methodologies including remote video and comic strip methods and documentary video practice as well as long term fieldwork.

    Abstract: Between working men and women (which may include "free" wage earners, chattel slaves, indentured labourers, sharecroppers, domestic servants, and many others) and those employing them, there has always been a constant - mostly silent but sometimes overt - struggle concerning employers' discretionary power and over the interpretation of formal and informal rules. There is a constantly shifting frontier of control, that is, an ongoing struggle for control in the workplace, with managers and supervisors trying to increase their power over their subordinates, and their subordinates, in reaction, trying to maintain and increase their relative autonomy. The detailed case studies in this volume span three centuries and cover different parts of the world. Still, they speak to each other in many ways, highlighting the fact that power at work, whether on the shopfloor or beyond, results from a wide range of complex interrelations. Between technological innovations and the ways in which they are actually implemented. Between the division of labour at the site of production or service provision and changing standards of social segmentation beyond the premises of the company, which can be reinforced - or weakened - by management strategies of utilizing labour power as well as workers' reaction to these strategies. And finally, between politics in production, which shape the relations between capital and labour on the shopfloor, and state politics of production, which cannot be understood without reference to broader developments in economy and society

    Abstract: This book comprises 40 short texts by urban sustainability scholars from around the globe. The scholars are recipients of a six-month research stay grant from the Global Center of Spatial Methods for Urban Sustainability (SMUS), a DAAD Exceed center funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). SMUS is a global network of researchers and practitioners from over 48 universities and institutions who work together to improve academic education in spatial disciplines. Through collaborative teaching, workshops, conferences, and training, network partners work across disciplines to advance urban sustainability. From September 2020 through February 2021, 40 scholars participated in the centre’s ‘Developing a PhD Proposal’ program by organising workshops, partaking in excursions, and attending classes. The classes covered topics such as research ethics and skills, spatial methods, and urban sustainability, with a focus on Sustainable Development Goal #11, which is about ‘making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable’. As part of their coursework, the students were tasked with writing short texts about how the topics covered manifest themselves in their respective home countries. This book is a compilation of those country replies, giving the reader a glimpse into urban sustainability perspectives from around the globe. The book includes a series of maps depicting the geographic locations represented in the country replies. They have been included to help the reader navigate the book and to highlight the diversity of topics and themes researchers are working on in the SMUS network.

With modern origins in works of neoliberals like Friedrich Hayek, basic income was conceived as a form of market-friendly welfare state-a safety net around capitalism that wouldn't impinge on capitalism. Although neoliberals failed to make the idea a reality, they succeeded in seeding a fascination that would permeate all corners of late-century capitalism, from supply-side Democrats to neoclassical economists and barons of Silicon Valley.     Abstract: The history of Europe in the 20th century is closely tied to the history of urban planning. Social and economic progress but also the brute treatment of people and nature throughout Europe were possible due to the use of urban planning and the other levels of spatial planning. Thereby, planning has constituted itself in Europe as an international subject. Since its emergence, through intense exchange but also competition, despite country differences, planning has developed as a European field of practice and scientific discipline. Planning is here much more than the addition of individual histories; however, historiography has treated this history very selective regarding geography and content. This book searches for an understanding of the historiography of planning in a European dimension. Scholars from Eastern and Western, Southern and Northern Europe address the issues of the public led production of city and the social functions of urban planning in capitalist and state-socialist countries.     Abstract: Diese Open-Access-Publikation untersucht die Akzeptanz der sächsischen Bevölkerung gegenüber Energie- und Rohstoffvorhaben sowie die Eignung von Kommunikationsmaßnahmen zur Verbesserung des Akzeptanzniveaus. Die Bürger:innen werden erstmals repräsentativ zu ihrer (In-)Akzeptanz gegenüber Anlagearten befragt. Dabei wird nachgewiesen, dass die Akzeptanz bei lokalen Projekten immer geringer ist als soziopolitisch. Bei den erneuerbaren Energieumwandlungsanlagen ist die Akzeptanz gegenüber Wasserkraft- und Solaranlagen am höchsten, gegenüber Biomasseanlagen am geringsten. Fossile Energieumwandlungsanlagen sind weniger akzeptiert und Tage- und Untertagebaue werden am schlechtesten bewertet. Eine vergleichende Befragung der Unternehmensvertreter:innen des Energie- und Rohstoffsektors ergibt eine Dissonanz der von ihnen angenommenen zur erfassten (In-)Akzeptanz der Bevölkerung: Das Akzeptanzniveau ist unabhängig von der Art des Vorhabens geringer, als es die Unternehmensvertreter:innen annehmen. Die Erkenntnisse werden genutzt, um eine Webapplikation zu entwickeln, die es insbesondere kleinen und mittleren Unternehmen ermöglicht, zur Akzeptanzsteigerung geeignete Kommunikationsmaßnahmen auszuwählen. Die Autorin Stefanie Walter ist Assistant Professor für integrierte europäische Nachhaltigkeitskommunikation an der Fakultät Medien der Hochschule Mittweida sowie freiberufliche Kommunikations-, Projekt- und Eventmanagerin. Ihr Forschungsschwerpunkt liegt auf der Akzeptanz- und Nachhaltigkeitskommunikation sowie dem Kommunikationsmanagement.

    Abstract: Weder in der Technikphilosophie noch in der technischen Bildung besteht Übereinkunft hinsichtlich der Verwendung des Begriffs Technik. Da verwundert es nicht, dass auch die empirische Erforschung des Technikbegriffs von Kindern und Jugendlichen ein Forschungsdesiderat darstellt. Im Rahmen der hier vorgelegten Arbeit soll diesem Desiderat nachgegangen werden. Mittels Alltagssprachlichem Struktur-Lege-Spiel und Fragebogen wird untersucht, welche subjektiven Vorstellungen Kinder und Jugendliche bezüglich des Begriffs Technik zum Ausdruck bringen und wie stabil diese Begriffe sind. Die Aussagen der Kinder und Jugendlichen werden mittels strukturierender Inhaltsanalyse ausgewertet. Im Zentrum steht dabei das entwickelte Kategoriensystem, mit dem die Technikbegriffe aus den kindlichen bzw. jugendlichen Aussagen erfasst werden. Zusammenfassend lässt sich festhalten, dass keine typischen Technikbegriffe aus dem Datenmaterial herausgearbeitet werden können. Die Technikbegriffe der befragten Kinder und Jugendlichen unterscheiden sich stark. Allerdings kann gezeigt werden, dass die Kinder und Jugendlichen zum Teil scharfsinnige Gedanken über Technik zum Ausdruck bringen

    Abstract: Echoing the famous "The Limits to Growth" report from 1972, this edited volume analyses the changes that the World System has undergone to the present, on the fiftieth anniversary of the original report. During the past fifty years, both the concept and understanding of these limits have significantly changed. This book highlights that the evolution of the World System has approached a new critical milestone, moving into a fundamentally new phase of historical development, when the old economic and social technologies no longer work as efficiently as before or even begin to function counterproductively, which leads the World System into a systemic crisis. The book discusses the transition of human society to a new phase state, the shape of which has not yet been determined. New approaches are needed for both, for the analysis of the global situation, and for forecasts. The book is based on an integrated approach including the world-systems, historical and evolutionary perspectives, as well as a systematic view of society, in which changes in one subsystem cause transformations in others. Through mathematical modeling, it defines the main vectors of transformations of the World System; makes a detailed forecast of the development of all the main subsystems of the society and the World System, while presenting horizons of changes from short-term to ultra-long-term; and presents different development scenarios as well as recommendations on how to achieve a transition to the most favorable scenario. The book will appeal to members and followers of the Club of Rome, policy-makers, as well as to scholars from various disciplines interested in a better understanding of the World System evolution, global futures, development studies, climate change, and future societies. .

    Abstract: "From famously humble origins in founder Jeff Bezos's garage, Amazon has grown to become one of the most successful businesses in history, able to deliver virtually anything to virtually anywhere thanks to its vast worldwide network of fulfillment centers. Unsustainable looks inside the company's warehouses to reveal that the rise of Amazon, and warehousing more generally, is made possible by the exploitation of workers' labor and communities' resources, including the natural environment.     Abstract: Das herkömmliche Rechnungswesen der öffentlichen Verwaltung ist die Kameralistik. Diese ist den gestiegenen Anforderungen aus Sicht von Wissenschaft und Praxis nicht mehr gewachsen und wird in Teilen der öffentlichen Hand seit nunmehr zwei Jahrzehnten durch die Doppelte Buchführung (Doppik) abgelöst. Das vorliegende Buch untersucht die Wirkungen dieser Reform auf das Handeln der betroffenen Akteure. Es wird der Frage nachgegangen, ob und gegebenenfalls unter welchen institutionellen Bedingungen das doppische Haushalts- und Rechnungswesen bzw. die darin integrierten Instrumente im kommunalen und staatlichen Bereich den mit der Einführung verbundenen Erwartungen gerecht werden kann. Untersucht werden deshalb die Fragen nach effizienzfeindlichen Institutionen der Finanzsteuerung und deren konzeptioneller Berücksichtigung in der Doppik. Dabei werden die Grenzen der Reform, aber auch die organisationsbezogenen Effizienzpotenziale der Einführung von dezentraler Budgetierung, Zielvereinbarungen und einem auf Quasiwettbewerb beruhenden Controllings theoretisch fundiert nachgewiesen und Lösungsvorschläge abgeleitet. Der Autor Matthias Knödler hat das Projekt der Einführung des Neuen Kommunalen Haushalts- und Rechnungswesens in den Kommunen des Landes Sachsen-Anhalt als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter begleitet und arbeitet derzeit im Bereich Haushaltswesen/Controlling in der Landesverwaltung Sachsen-Anhalt.

Those of us who believe in market-based solutions to these challenges get even more disheartened when we regularly see our existing capitalist system failing us, often causing more harm than good. Many examples show how the capitalist tools of finance and investment can and make real, positive impact. Approaches like blended finance and impact investing can help accelerate progress against the world’s biggest remaining collective challenges. Yet use of these improved capitalist approaches remains far too subscale. Blended finance and impact investing remain 15 to 200 times smaller than traditional approaches to finance and investment. How can we continue to make capitalism work better by scaling these approaches and others? This book looks at how we can start making these necessary changes using strategies, structures, and practices that take advantage of capitalism's strengths. Its goal is to demonstrate how a reimagined financial system can be more inclusive and accountable to all.     Abstract: This book, drawing on fresh scholarship, investigates electrification in new places and across different time periods. While much of our understanding of electrification as a historical process is based on the seminal work done by Thomas P. Hughes in Networks of Power (1983), the scholars in this volume expand and revise Hughes’ systems approach to suggest that electrification is a heterogeneous and contingent process. Moreover, the contributors suggest that the conquest of the world by electricity remains incomplete despite more than a century elapsing. Above all, though, this book provides context for thinking about what lies ahead as humans continue their conquest of the earth through electricity. As we become increasingly dependent on electricity to power our lights, heat and cool our homes, turn the wheels of industry, and keep our information systems humming, so we are ever more vulnerable when the grid runs into trouble.     Abstract: "Es gehört zu den größten Mängeln fast aller Theorien der Demokratie, mit erstaunlicher Hartnäckigkeit immer wieder zu vergessen, dass die meisten Mitglieder des von ihnen lauthals beschworenen Souveräns stets auch arbeitende Subjekte sind". Welche Rolle spielt die Organisation von Arbeitsverhältnissen für die Bestandssicherung eines demokratischen Gemeinwesens? Das ist die Frage, der Axel Honneth in seiner neuen großen Monographie nachgeht, deren Schlüsselbegriffe "gesellschaftliche Arbeit" und "soziale Arbeitsteilung" sind. Seine zentrale These lautet, dass die Teilnahme an der demokratischen Willensbildung an die Voraussetzung einer transparent und fair geregelten Arbeitsteilung gebunden ist. Honneth begründet zunächst, warum es gerechtfertigt ist, die Arbeitsverhältnisse auf ihre Demokratieverträglichkeit hin zu prüfen. Dann zeichnet er die Entwicklung der Arbeitsbedingungen seit dem Beginn des Kapitalismus im 19. Jahrhundert nach. Fluchtpunkt dieses mit eindrücklichen literarischen Zeugnissen illustrierten historischen Streifzugs, der unter anderem in die Welt der Landarbeiter, der - zumeist weiblichen - Dienstboten und der ersten Industriearbeiter führt, ist die Vermutung, dass die heutigen Arbeitsverhältnisse zunehmend die Chancen zur aktiven Teilnahme an der demokratischen Meinungs- und Willensbildung untergraben. Daher wird im letzten Teil des Buches umrissen, an welchen Scharnierstellen eine Politik der Arbeit heute anzusetzen hätte, um den sich abzeichnenden Missständen entgegenzuwirken und zu einer dringend benötigten Neubelebung demokratischer Partizipation beizutragen

Dieser Frage geht der Historiker Kim Sebastian Todzi auf den Grund und untersucht dazu den Aufstieg und Fall des Hamburger Woermann-Konzerns. Kaum ein Unternehmen ist mit der deutschen Kolonialherrschaft in West- und Südwestafrika über eine so lange Zeit so eng verbunden wie dieser Konzern, der aus dem 1837 von Carl Woermann gegründeten Handelshaus C. Woermann hervorging.Todzi zeigt in seiner empirisch gesättigten und analytisch differenzierten Arbeit, die neuere Kolonialgeschichte, postkoloniale Ansätze und Unternehmensgeschichte produktiv verbindet, welche Rolle der Woermann-Konzern bei der Kolonisierung Kameruns spielte, wie er sich in einer quasi symbiotischen Beziehung mit der deutschen Kolonialherrschaft entwickelte - und wie er während des Völkermordes an den Herero und Nama (1904-1908) die Truppentransporte von Hamburg nach Deutsch-Südwestafrika organisierte.

    Abstract: This book explores the central economic and political issues defining the modern world. With contributions from a number of world renowned economists, a range of topical debates are discussed in an accessible and practical manner. The topics discussed include the current economic and political backdrop, global economic shifts, challenges within central banking and financial integration, the international monetary and financial system, and geopolitical tensions. Particular attention is given to the transition to a low carbon economy, the perils of public debt, the post-COVID-19 recovery, and the conflict in Ukraine. He has written extensively about exchange rates and cross border investment inflows. He developed the Center for Studies in International Finance at the University of Chicago and was the founding chair of the Committee for Public Policy Studies. He published The International Money Game in 1974 and brought out three editions of Manias, Panics, and Crashes. Amongst his other books are Money, Banking, and the Economy and The Multinational Paradigm. Gylfi Zoega is a Professor of Economics at the University of Iceland and Birkbeck College, London. He has written on the financial crisis in Iceland and taken part in the recovery effort as a member of the Monetary Policy Committee of its central bank. His research is focused on unemployment, economic growth, and financial turbulence. He co-edited Preludes to the Icelandic Financial Crisis and The 2008 Global Financial Crisis in Retrospect with Robert Z. Aliber and recently published Dynamism with Hian Teck Hoon and Edmund Phelps. Már Gudmundsson was the Governor of the Central Bank of Iceland from 2009 to 2019, the Deputy Head of the Monetary and Economic Department at the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) 2004-2009, and the Chief Economist of the Central Bank of Iceland 1994-2004. His published research includes cross-border financial integration, exchange rate regimes, financial stability, monetary policy, and pensions. He has recently been contributing to SEACEN´s project on challenges and options in managing capital flows.

    Abstract: This textbook explores sustainability, climate change, and the corporate responsibility movement from a broad array of perspectives, including the challenges, risks, and opportunities of ESG policies, energy and environmental science, economics and philosophy, and sound public and private sector management. There is no intergenerational issue that is more pressing than the challenge of sustainability and climate change. It is a concern that will only worsen within any reader’s lifetime, especially if we fail to act. At the same time, there is growing concern among corporations arising from the Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) paradigm that includes climate risk, future profits, and stakeholder expectations.     Abstract: Economic efficiency analysis has received considerable worldwide attention in the last few decades, with Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA) and Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) establishing themselves as the two dominant approaches in the literature.
