Finally, the study reports the results of an expert workshop in the form of recommendations and a special analysis of the Lower Saxony survey on partner violence among 15-year-old male adolescents
    Kurzfassung: Zu Partnerschaftsgewalt gegen Männer in Deutschland liegen nur wenige wissenschaftlich ermittelte Daten vor. Die Autor:innen präsentieren Befunde einer quantitativen, deutschlandweit repräsentativen Online-Befragung von 1.200 Männern im Alter von 18 bis 69 Jahren zu Prävalenzen von Partnerschaftsgewalt und ihren Folgen. Vorgestellt werden darüber hinaus die Erfahrungen der Männer mit dem Hilfesystem und einzelnen Risikofaktoren sowie eine qualitative Interviewstudie, bei der 16 Männer detailliert zu ihren Erfahrungen befragt wurden. Abschließend präsentiert das Buch die Ergebnisse eines Expert:innen-Workshops in Form von Handlungsempfehlungen sowie eine Sonderauswertung des Niedersachsensurveys zu Partnerschaftsgewalt an 15-jähringen männlichen Jugendlichen

    Kurzfassung: Zur Bewältigung von Organisierter (Drogen)Kriminalität finden zeitlich und finanziell aufwändige, meist verdeckte Ermittlungen gegen eine Vielzahl von Akteuren statt. Um diese Hintergrundermittlungen nicht vorzeitig aufzudecken, wird die sog. ›Legendierte Kontrolle‹ eingesetzt, bei der die Ermittlungsbehörden eine Durchsuchung als allgemeine Verkehrskontrolle tarnen. Die Arbeit ordnet das Instrument in das bestehende System verdeckter und täuschender Ermittlungsmaßnahmen ein. Sie analysiert die verfassungs- und strafverfahrensrechtliche Zulässigkeit des staatlichen Vorgehens, das sich im Grenzbereich zwischen Gefahrenabwehr und Strafverfolgung bewegt. Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Frage, ob entgegen dem Grundsatz der Aktenwahrheit eine legendierte, also unzutreffende oder unvollständige Aktenführung erlaubt sein kann.     Kurzfassung: "Künstliche Intelligenz (KI) ist die aktuellste und meistdiskutierte Errungenschaft des digitalen Fortschritts. Die Versicherungswirtschaft als eine der am meisten von Daten abhängigen Branchen gilt als zentrales Anwendungsfeld für KI. In all ihren Tätigkeitsbereichen, insbesondere der Risikogestaltung, der Vertragsbearbeitung und dem Schadenmanagement, ist KI einsetzbar und wird bereits zunehmend eingesetzt. Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich in einem umfassenden Blick mit den zivilrechtlichen, datenschutzrechtlichen und versicherungsvertragsrechtlichen Fragen bezüglich des Einsatzes von KI in der Versicherungswirtschaft und bei Versicherungsnehmern. Dabei wird zunächst in einem technisch-definitorischen Teil die Funktionsweise von KI erörtert und dabei auch auf die Definitionsansätze auf EU-Ebene eingegangen. Im darauffolgenden zivilrechtlichen Teil werden die gängigen Meinungsstreits zur Zurechnung und Haftung für KI-Verhalten aufgegriffen und unter Berücksichtigung von Reformperspektiven einer kritischen Würdigung unterzogen. Als rechtliches Schwerpunktproblem für den KI-Einsatz wird sodann das Datenschutzrecht identifiziert. Im versicherungsrechtlichen Teil stellt der Autor zwei Perspektiven der Versicherungswirtschaft auf KI vor: Zunächst beleuchtet er die Rechtsfragen, die beim Einsatz von KI durch Versicherer auftauchen. Insbesondere wird die Einordnung von Versicherung als Bereich mit hohem Risiko nach dem neuen KI-Gesetz diskutiert. Anschließend analysiert der Autor unter dem Stichwort „Silent AI“ bestehende Bedingungswerke und Versicherungsprodukte auf ihre Kompatibilität mit der neuen Technologie. Hierbei identifiziert er stellenweise Anpassungsbedarf bzw. teils auch Bedarf an neuem Versicherungsschutz.     Kurzfassung: The direction of fiber orientation plays a crucial role in deciding the mechanical performance of textile structural composites. Unlike conventional composite materials, geometrically oriented textile structures, e.g., woven, knitted, and braided constructions, can be designed and developed for load bearing in a particular direction. Their properties can be enhanced by modifying the geometry and material composition. One major challenge in producing textile structural composites with superior mechanical properties at a reasonably lower price is cost effective prepreg. Composites constructed from reinforcement having a well-defined geometry perform better than randomly oriented fibers at a reasonable cost. Their flex fatigue is superior to conventional preforms in specific applications. This Special Issue invites research as well as review articles dealing with different types of (2D, 3D, multiaxial) woven, knitted, and braided structures for load bearing structural composite applications. Use of industrial multifilament yarns of pure and hybrid composition in textile geometrical reinforcement structures can also be included. The methods of impregnation of such structures by thermoplastic and thermoset resins should be described. The superior performance in such structural composites must be highlighted. Methods of characterizing woven, knitted, and braided textile reinforced composites is the focus of this issue. Current and future applications of advanced textile structural composites can be summarized in the submitted articles. Theoretical (computational, numerical simulation etc.) as well as experimental work can be submitted with sufficient scientific innovation

    Kurzfassung: Electronic cigarettes (ECs) have been present on the consumer market for over a decade, and the number of related scientific publications in the PubMed database has now exceeded seven thousand. Despite the number of publications, there is still no consensus in the scientific community regarding their safety. However, it should be emphasized that a comparison of equivalent quantities of tobacco smoke and the aerosol produced from e-cigarettes showed that there was a significantly lower quantity of toxic compounds in the aerosol compared with the tobacco smoke. Therefore, the use of ECs could be seen as a way of reducing the health damage to cigarette smokers who cannot or are unwilling to quit using conventional methods. In addition, randomized studies are emerging suggesting that ECs could be useful in smoking cessation. On the other hand, ECs are now widely used among adolescents and may pose a serious risk of future nicotine dependence and health problems in this population, as they counteract their advantages in the population gained from smokers who quit using them. Therefore, as most authors stress, further research that will convincingly resolve the current controversies is needed. Clinicians urgently need evidence-based knowledge to better inform their patients about the use of these emerging tobacco products as a harm-reduction strategy, and regulators should regulate these products in ways that best serve public health, especially taking the youth population into account

    Kurzfassung: Nowadays, there is great pressure on energy conservation and emission reduction. In order to achieve these goals, weight reduction in manufacturing fields, such as the vehicle, marine, and aerospace industries, and microelectromechanical systems is the major trend. Although some structures and parts that require special properties and service conditions must use ferrous materials such as steels due to their superior thermal and wear resistance, there is a desperate need to replace these alloys with non-ferrous materials such as Al alloys, Mg alloys, Ti-based alloys, Cu alloys, and others in order to decrease the operational and maintenance costs. Recently, many new material processing techniques, i.e., irradiation, cryogenic rolling, wet chemical method, induction sintering, liquid/solid casting, heat treatment, electromagnetic hot forming, and five-axis flank milling, have been developed to enhance the performance of non-ferrous materials. Excellent work hardening, fracture toughness, mechanical properties, magnetic properties, and wear resistance could be realized depending on the appropriate application of these new technologies. This Special Issue covers these topics and focuses on the process–structure–properties relationships of high-performance non-ferrous materials

    Kurzfassung: Since the emergence of the Coronavirus-19 infectious disease (COVID-19) pandemic, a rising number of reports have underlined the risk of increasing antimicrobial resistance due to antibiotic overuse in COVID-19 patients. In addition, many physicians and pharmacists involved in antimicrobial stewardship have had to shift their activities to the containment of the COVID-19 crisis. In contrast to this observed overconsumption of antibiotics, very few bacterial superinfections have been documented in COVID-19 patients, especially in patients admitted outside the intensive care unit and in the first days of admission. However, the identification of bacterial co-/superinfections in COVID-19 patients is difficult, as inflammatory and radiological markers of bacterial infection lack specificity in this setting. Furthermore, studies regarding the effect of immune suppression, including the use of corticosteroids and anti-interleukins, and the effect of potential immunomodulatory properties of certain antibiotics on the occurrence of bacterial co-/superinfection are needed.This Special Issue of Antibiotics aims to increase our knowledge regarding (more or less specific) markers associated with bacterial co-/superinfection in COVID-19 patients, quantitative and qualitative data regarding antibiotic prescriptions in COVID-19 patients, potential beneficial effects of antibiotic use in certain COVID-19 subgroups, detrimental effects associated with antibiotic overuse in COVID-19 patients, and evidence-based guidelines, which could facilitate the decision-making process when antibiotic prescriptions are considered

    Kurzfassung: We are pleased to present a Special Issue of Languages on the topic of Sign Language Emergence. Sign languages are the only extant languages that can be caught in the act of being born and developing with no model, and they, therefore, offer the only empirical evidence for language emergence in human societies. We have brought together a collection of articles on emerging sign languages that contribute a great deal to our current understanding of this process.This Special Issue covers eleven different emerging sign languages around the world. The articles deal with several aspects of language emergence, including, most notably: (1) the relationship between the emerging language and the culture of the larger society; (2) the role of iconicity in the emergence of sign language; (3) the relationship between the shared context in a small signing community and the degree of variation in the vocabulary; and (4) the vulnerability of budding sign languages. Spoken creole languages are also young, but are different from emerging sign languages, in that the speakers of pidgins from which creoles are assumed to have descended already had native languages. One article compares the features of creoles and of emerging sign languages.We are especially pleased with the diversity and breadth of interests of the contributors to the volume, who are based on four continents. The languages that they cover are equally diverse in their geographical provenance

A plurality of preservation technologies, including chemical treatment (calcium chloride, 1-methylcyclopropene, salicylic acid, etc.), physical methods (low-temperature conditioning, controlled atmosphere storage, ultraviolet-C irradiation, etc.), and biotechnology (such as genetic engineering technology) have been applied to maintain storage quality and to extend the storage life of fresh fruit and vegetables in recent years. Developing advanced preservation techniques to prolong the storage life of fruit and vegetables is of importance for improving social and economic benefits.     Kurzfassung: Ribosome-inactivating proteins (RIPs) are rRNA N-glycosylases isolated mainly from plants that catalyze the hydrolysis of the N-glycosidic bond of a specific adenosine in the sarcin-ricin loop (SRL) of the major ribosomal RNA. Because the SRL is crucial for anchoring translation elongation factors, RIPs cause inactivation of ribosomes. They have been classified into two types based on the presence (type 2 RIPs) or absence (type 1 RIPs) of a lectin chain that can turn type 2 RIPs into potent toxins, such as ricin or abrin. The biological role of these proteins is unknown, but they are thought to be a defense mechanism of some plants against pathogens and predators. Because of their enzymatic action, RIPs show several biological activities, among which antiviral, antifungal and antiproliferative activities stand out. The most promising application of RIPs is their use as a component of immunotoxins, in which RIPs are linked to antibodies that mediate their binding and internalization by malignant cells. In agriculture, RIPs have been shown to increase resistance against viruses, fungi and insects in transgenic plants. The studies collected in this book provide the reader with an overview of the most current and interesting lines of research in the field of RIPs and their applications in medicine and agriculture. Thus, the reprint includes the isolation and biological properties of some new RIPs, both type 1 and type 2, the mechanisms of toxicity of previously described RIPs and two extensive reviews, one on the antiviral activity of RIPs and the other on the strategies used to improve their pharmacological properties

    Kurzfassung: Germany, which brutalized its neighbors in Europe for centuries, has mostly escaped the ghosts of the past, while Japan remains haunted in Asia. The most common explanation for this difference is that Germany knows better how to apologize; Japan is viewed as "impenitent." Walter F. Hatch rejects the conventional wisdom and argues that Germany has achieved reconciliation with neighbors by showing that it can be a trustworthy partner in regional institutions like the European Union and NATO; Japan has never been given that opportunity (by its dominant partner, the U.S.) to demonstrate such an ability to cooperate.     Kurzfassung: This work presents a structural and operative model of successful processes of school reform, based on eleven source-based studies on the history of educational and school-based pedagogy. Oriented on real-world cases and sources, these studies analyse the reform practices of historical reform schools during the twentieth century. The point of reference in each case is the individual school as a pedagogical unit of action. The studies are historically and empirically grounded and provide in-depth insights into the historical practices of schools as well as historical school reforms. The term “conditions for success” is employed here to focus on organisational structures and pedagogical patterns of action within historical processes of reform. The findings are derived from the inherent logic of practical pedagogical processes of reform. These are structures and patterns of action developed by the pedagogical professionals themselves through social processes. The results of the educational-historical source studies are collated here in a model of recurring professional patterns of pedagogical action and structure. The resulting historically and empirically developed “Five-plus-two-K Structure of Successful School Reform Processes” was tested on 100 modern day reform schools and it could be shown that these processes recur over a period of about one hundred years. Following the inherent logic of pedagogical processes in schools, the “Five-plus-two-K Structure of Successful School Reform Processes” was developed through a process of professional pedagogical action, shaped by professional pedagogical action and interaction, and was differentiated for professional pedagogical action. This model is integrative on the basis that it is primarily pedagogically constituted and was closely developed with educational professionals. The model is thus an educational-historical contribution to a theory of school reform processes and contributes to the pedagogical understanding of the processes of school development
    Kurzfassung: Auf der Grundlage von elf bildungshistorischen und schulpädagogischen Quellenstudien wird ein Struktur- und Handlungsmodell gelingender Schulreformprozesse entwickelt. Die Studien analysieren fallorientiert und quellengestützt die Reformpraxen an historischen Reformschulen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Bezugspunkt ist dabei jeweils die Einzelschule als pädagogische Handlungseinheit. Die Studien sind historisch-empirisch fundiert und geben vertiefte Einblicke in historische Schul(reform)praxis. Fokussiert werden mit dem Terminus Gelingensbedingungen organisationale Strukturen und pädagogische Handlungsmuster innerhalb der historischen Reformprozesse. Die Befunde leiten sich aus der Eigenlogik pädagogisch-praktischer Reformprozesse ab. Es sind Strukturen und Handlungsmuster, die von den pädagogischen Akteur*innen im sozialen Prozess selbst entwickelt wurden. Der Ertrag der bildungshistorischen Quellenstudien bündelt sich in einem Modell wiederkehrender pädagogisch-professioneller Handlungs- und Strukturmuster. Diese historisch-empirisch entwickelte „Fünf-plus-zwei-K-Struktur gelingender Schulreformprozesse“ wurde an 100 gegenwärtigen Reformschulen überprüft und konnte im Ergebnis in einem Zeitraum von rund einhundert Jahren als wiederkehrend validiert werden. Entstanden im Prozess professionellen pädagogischen Handelns, gestaltet durch professionelles pädagogisches Handeln und Interaktion und ausdifferenziert für professionelles pädagogisches Handeln folgt das Fünf-plus-zwei-K-Strukturmodell der Eigenlogik pädagogischer Prozesse in der Schule. Es ist anschlussfähig, weil es primär pädagogisch konstituiert ist und sich nah bei den Akteur*innen befindet. Das Modell ist somit ein bildungshistorischer Beitrag zu einer Theorie von Schulreformprozessen und trägt zum pädagogischen Verständnis von Schulentwicklungsprozessen bei

In addition to those information security measures, data privacy solutions are also required to protect the sensitive data involved. In this book, eight research papers address security and privacy challenges when dealing with blockchain technologies and the IoT. Solutions are presented to the issue of how IoT group communication can be secured and how trust within IoT applications can be increased. In the context of blockchain technologies, approaches to enhance query-processing capabilities and efficiently apply a proof-of-work consensus protocol in IoT environments are introduced. Furthermore, how blockchain technologies can be used in IoT environments to control access to confidential IoT data as well as enable privacy-aware data sharing is discussed. After peer review, 17 articles in related areas have been accepted for publishing in this Special Issue. The published articles cover a range of topics and applications central to target tracking. There are eight papers about general multi-target tracking, including the topics of joint tracking and classification [3], adaptive estimation using clutter measurement probability [6], joint localization and tracking [7], extended target tracking [8], tracking with smoothing [11], DOA tracking [12], tracking under low detection probability [14], and sonar tracking and interception [17]. Three papers address multi-sensor multi-target tracking methods. Specifically, a multi-target estimating method for pulsed radar systems is proposed in [2], a joint dwell time and bandwidth optimization method in a radar network is proposed in [4], a and multiple marine ship tracking method with unknown backgrounds is presented in [9]. There are 2 papers [10,15] on the problem of target assignment in multi-sensor multi-target tracking. Moreover, Mallick et al. considered measures of nonlinearity of a polynomial curve in two dimensions [1], Zhao et al. explored the use of calibration targets for which the positions are known to the MPR system, to counter the loss in target localization accuracy arising from transmitter/receiver position errors [13], and Li et al. proposed an algorithm to apply the frequency diversity technique to passive azimuth estimation in [16]

    Kurzfassung: The thermal analysis of materials encompasses a variety of methods used to detect changes in material properties as a function of temperature. Before temperature measurement became routine in all stages of metal and ceramic processing, early metallurgists relied on the color and brightness of hot metal, and glassmakers used viscosity for guidance. Nowadays, techniques of differential thermal analysis (DTA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) routinely yield heat capacities, temperatures, and enthalpies of phase transformations in the temperature range from −150 to 1500 °C. The measurement of any physical property as a function of temperature brings the method into the realm of thermal analysis. This Special Issue provides a sampling of the current use, diversity, and ongoing developments of techniques and approaches in the thermal analysis of materials. It combines contributions solicited by editors that reflect their scientific interests and networks, with generally related submissions received over two years. It contains 16 articles and 1 short review submitted by authors from 10 countries

It includes the emergence of new sensors, development of sophisticated platforms for those sensors, and advances in signal and data processing. The progress in the fields of radar, optoelectronic, acoustic, magnetic, chemical, and other sensors is stunning. Whereas the mentioned sensors are currently more sensitive and accurate, have improved resolutions, data rates, and dynamical ranges, they still have their limitations. The utilization of multi-sensor systems and joint processing of their signals or data has long been considered an effective solution for reducing the disadvantages and best utilizing their strengths. The emergence of new types of sensors creates an opportunity for scientists and engineers to develop new and more capable integrated multi-sensor systems. It is necessary to mention that the users’ expectations with respect to the size of the observed area or volume, data resolution, accuracy, speed of operation, and functionality of remote sensing systems are still increasing. Extended frequency bands, improved resolutions, and data rates of the new sensors as well as the common use of distributed sensors increase the influx of data in contemporary multi-sensor systems. These facts pose new challenges for the data fusion algorithms that must often employ the newest achievements from the areas of big data mining, statistical estimation, artificial intelligence, etc. This reprint provides a fresh insight into the newest developments in the fields of multi-sensor systems and data fusion

Some papers focus on developing biodegradable plastics obtained from renewable sources such as starch and biomass waste. Other articles discuss modification techniques to improve the mechanical properties of biopolymers such as PLA and PHAs. The use of recycled polymeric materials in the construction industry is highlighted as a low-cost and environmentally friendly solution.Other studies include investigations on polymer-modified bitumen, a novel sound-absorbing material made from used palm-oil-based polyurethane foam and water hyacinth fibre composite, bio-based epoxy-lignin coatings, TiO2 nanocomposites, the photocatalytic activity of different polymeric composites, sustainable elastomers, interactions between vanillyl-alcohol-based epoxy and cross-linkers, polyvinyl chloride sorbent for rare earth elements, lignin-based thermoplastic, the chemical foaming process of polylactic acid, microencapsulation strategies for essential oils, electrochemical sensors for glucose determination, and an intelligent drug delivery system based on pH-sensitive polymeric formulations.It is important to recognize that the field of sustainable polymeric materials is vast and rapidly evolving, and while a single volume cannot entirely capture all the developments occurring in this field, this collection provides readers with a valuable introduction and overview of the topic

    Kurzfassung: Traditional wood composites are produced with synthetic, formaldehyde-based adhesives, commonly made from fossil-derived constituents, such as urea, phenol, melamine, etc. Along with their undisputable advantages, these adhesives are characterized by certain problems, connected with the emission of hazardous volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including free formaldehyde emission from the finished wood composites, which is carcinogenic to humans and harmful to the environment. The growing environmental concerns, connected with the adoption of circular economy principles, and the new, stricter legislative requirements for the emission of harmful VOCs, e.g., free formaldehyde, from wood composites, have posed new challenges to researchers and industrial practice, related to the development of sustainable, eco-friendly wood composites, optimization of the available lignocellulosic raw materials, and use of alternative resources. This reprint presents a collection of 10 high-quality original research and review papers providing examples of the most recent advances and technological developments in the fabrication, design, characteristics, and applications of eco-friendly wood and wood-based composites
